On lead walks only with cut paw. Any tips

Hi. Pooch cut his paw on the sat before Xmas and has been confined to on lead short walks only. Saw vet (again) today and they say at least another 5 days. He's a c12 month lurcher - born to run.

To be fair he has been really good. I've been doing extra training with him at home and taking him round different streets trying to tire him out. However I can feel he is getting increasingly frustrated and desperate for a run/play. He spins round like a whirling dervish when he sees another dog and anyone looking at him would think he's completely mad/out of control.

Just had a horrible incident with a cyclist riding their bike right in front of me on pavement whilst pooch in mid spin. Cue verbal abuse from cyclist.

Any tips? will try clicker on walks now too and cross if I see other dogs.

Wine, lots of wine, lol.

I'm on week 4 of on lead walks only, I should own a 6 month old rottie pup - he seems to have evolved into tigger Hmm

The vet ended up prescribing the puppy sedatives in my case and I bought a bottle of Rescue Remedy for me!

Oh the wine was for the OP, not the dog obviously, lol

Oh dear, I feel your pain! It sounds like you're doing everything you can though. What about scenting around the house? Hide a smelly treat and tell him to "find it" - gradually move on to less smelly treats and / or more obscure hiding places. Worked a charm with our lab when he was neutered.

Oh, and the cyclist shouldn't have been on the pavement (unless it was a cycle path). Shout back at him.

Ah Wine - just what the vet ordered. Can manage that one OK - perhaps I need a hip flask for walks?

Will def try hide and seek. Have just sent him out with DH to do serious clicker work.

LOL re tigger - I can just see him now.

Agreed re cyclist - they should not have done what they did but of course I ended up apologising to be met with abuse. Unthinking teenager rather than an adult.

Cheers all Wine

As a fellow lurcher owner, all I can say is get used to it especially over the autumn and winter months. Sad. My ladies currently on lead walks/house arrest due to yet another cut paw. Also get yourself a decent first aid kit, and learn how to treat cuts, wil, save a fortune in vets bills. My lad has had one treated by a vet in 2012. As I treated the rest at home. I know when it is so bad that he needs a vet.

Also a random tip, carry condoms and childrens socks in walking bag. That way if you notice a cut foot you can get him home with it ready dressed and waterproof. Condoms make fab foot dressings for short term use! If you walk with others get used to the Hmm. Faces as you pull out a condom!

Feel for you megs puts our two weeks into perspective

I suspect you are right morethan and lol re condoms but what a brilliant idea. We have spent a fortune on vets bills for various reasons and it's only been 3 months! need to build my confidence on first aid for pooch - feel like over fussy new mum again. To be fair it was borderline as to whether it needed a stitch or two.

Steri strips are your friend! I have a shares in them! I also have a better. Doggy first aid kit than one for humans.

Lurchers and vets bills goes hand in hand I am afraid. You will soon learn about how to strap a foot just trust your instincts.

My curly was on house arrest for 4 months due to a badly broken back leg, that was horrid and very expensive.

Also another tip, don't worry with doggy bandages etc, tesco have exactly the same ones for a fraction of the price!

Thanks more than. 4 months house arrest sounds awful. Hope all mended now. Clearly need to work on my first aid skills - funny he is a complete drama queen if he bashes himself whereas DD is as 'ard as nails

Drama queen and lurcher.................erm yes they go together for sure! My lad can be fine, put a bandage on him and he isantly limps, regardless of if he is injured or not Grin.

We use a lace on boot and kiddies' socks for cut feet having bathed them and applied healing jelly (from suppliers of horse treatment products) The condom idea sounds very practical.
