Lost puppy - what to do?

DSD is on her way home with a stray puppy she found outside school, it's quite young apparently and has no collar. They've been knocking on doors to see if it belongs to anyone and so far no one is claiming it. I've said to bring it home if they can't find the owner.
What should I do if she comes home with it? We already have a dog (no idea how it will react to another dog coming into the house) and were not planning on another.

Phone your local dog warden. We did this when we found a Jack Russell puppy and they came out to us to collect it. It was about 3 hours before they could get to us though so we kept it the dining room (where we had laminate flooring, in case of accidents.) Give him some water and a few treats.

Just keep him in a separate room to your dog if you are worried about how he will react to a puppy in the house.

Puppy is here now. Very young, although quite bright and seems healthy.
Would dog wardens still be available at this time of the day?
I think it's a cross breed of some kind, mostly black with a white bib and floppy ears.

Please don't call the dog warden, the poor little thing will only have 7 days in a horrid pound. Please try the vets, and animal rescue charities, one that has a no kill policy.

I'm near Hebden Bridge. I won't let it go to the pound if they do that, I asked the out of hours service what would happen to the puppy and they didn't know.

you legally have to inform the dog warden but you dont ave to hand the dog over to them. If it is lost the dog warden is probably the first place they will try so they need to know you have it.

Thank you for not letting him go to the pound, that is what will happen to him if he goes with the dog warden unless he is claimed in the next 7 days. How is he doing?

Ok, the dog is logged with the out of hours service and the Warden will be passed the report in the morning, in the meantime if the owners contact the Council I've said they can pass on my number.

I really hope so! I've been out earlier this evening so issey6cats may not still be around. I'll be checking my inbox in the morning.
I'd love to reunite this little chap with his owners.
