Sometimes.

I've done lots and lots of training with my pup, now 1andnearlyahalf. This last week, his usually pin sharp recall has failed dramatically. If I set him up in a down/sit/stand stay, I can wander about chucking balls and all sorts, until I call him to come or heel. He loves loves his toys and usually comes back for a tug. His focus is brill, likewise his scent work, retrieve, jumps and what have u. Which is no good if I can't get him to bloody come back is it!!

Earlier this week he completely ignored me for a puddle, then this morning fucked right off to chase rabbits. It's making me so stressed as we start training with a working trials club soon and I need to have good off lead control.

If I take a ball out he stays near my side completely, but don't want to have to play ball on every walk as he then doesn't go mooch/sniff.

Thinking of whistle training? Please help.

Could you have a hidden ball that you whip out for emergencies? You just need to be more exciting than a puddle...which sounds wrong, lol

Sympathies. I'm having this with my 15 month old spaniel. I've started recalling him randomly during the walk using really high value treats (n our case, vile, cheap stinky meat flavoured chews) and snicking the lead on. We walk for a bit, then I let him off again and repeat the whole exercise over and over. He's now coming back straight away as long as he can see the stinky treat. Next step is to get him to come without seeing the treat....

I always recall randomly for a play or whatever. He's not really motivated by food.

That's a bugger, potty. What about a brand new, super exciting annoying squeaky toy? I can't use toys or my mutt gets all grumpy when other dogs try to get involved

pimmsdog was the same so I whistle trained him, now my only problem is that I recall all the other dogs that were playing with him Grin

Inthe not sure I am an expert Grin

We got a whistle and we toot 3 times every time we called him and gave a treat when he came back. Then we dropped the calling but did big open arms whilst tooting. It helped that 2 of us were there when training. He now even knows that one whistle means look at me, every time I blew once I clicked my clicker if he looked and we also have 2 blows means sit (although that is a little suspect still, he thinks it means run half way back and sit)Grin

If I was doing it again I would teach the look first with one blow as this is the easiest.

Pimmsdog is lab collie cross so obsessed with food and designed to be whistle trained so it was quite easy Wink
