I have 6 to chose from.

We have Devil Dog: Very enthusiastic, already knows a few commands but we've spent more time working in behavioural issues and not enough time on obedience. Very quick to learn. Still has tendency to go into kill or be killed mode when he is in enclosed spaces with other dogs/perceived threats. He now has to be muzzled in the car after biting me quite badly when I intervened in his attack against the puppy whose only crime was to get too close to Devil Dog while he felt he couldn't escape. He's fine with other dogs off lead. He tolerates dogs when leashed. Recall is good but not spectacular. Focused during training.

Whippy: Enthusiasm is good. Slow to pick things up. Recall is superb merely because she loves being near people. Fine with other dogs off lead, snappy with dogs who are smaller than her when she's on lead after being attacked by a JRT while she was on her lead. This is improving. Only knows sit and fails at that most of the time. Never been trained properly because it never occurs to her to do anything, as in anything other than wagging her tail and smiling. At all. Ever. Wags a lot.

Puppy: Excellent with all dogs and all people under all circumstances. Very enthusiastic. Very puppyish. A total nightmare to control around other dogs, people, carrier bags, anything that might be interesting. Easily distracted.

Bull Lurcher: Enthusiasm is none existant. Ditto recall. Very loving with anything and everything. Knows no commands. Sleeps for 95% of the day, so no one has ever bothered training him.

Sandy Lurcher: Moderate enthusiasm for learning. Very good with people and other dogs. A bit thick and tends to growl a lot in play/happiness etc. Slow to learn.

Flying Whippet: The most enthusiastic of the lot. Loves people. Terrified of other dogs, will go into a sustained attack against a person she views as a threat. Recall is super. Knows Sit, down, off, come. Scarily intelligent and fast to learn. Very focused during training.

I need to chose one to take on a residential course to train me in how to train them properly.

Puppy! It'd be a good sort of challenge with no fear of a teeny tiny fight.

Take more than one if they are happy resting in the car. I think doing all of the training sessions with a pup will be hard work for the puppy.

If it is Bishop Burton when I went they have bandanas for the dogs to wear to show if they are dog reactive, or human reactive etc so people know to give you space. However the reactive dogs may find it hard going and need a chill out session - then you can go and get out dog no2. Smile

Take fifty times more treats than you think you are going to need and enjoy it - I wish I were starting over and doing it all againSmile

Ooh exciting! I don't think I'd take a dog that might have to be muzzled, as you want to be able to concentrate on learning, not on managing a beast. And a puppy might get too tired. How about whippy? I hope you have a fab time!

I'd say either puppy or bull lurcher (leaning more to bull lurcher).

Both seem like a challenge to train, however if you can train a dog with no known incentives then you could probably train anything.

It's for a foundation degree in canine behaviour and training. I'd never considered taking more than one dog. That would be a good idea.

With the bull lurcher I would definitely be able to concentrate on what I was being shown without worrying about what the dog is up to.

The course description says I will need to train at least one dog to an advanced level. This will most definately be Devil Dog. He is the one I enjoy working with most and after the flying whippet is the one with the most energy and intelligence.

I might take him and puppy or bull lurcher.

Will you get to swap dogs with other people too for some exercises so as to get experience with a dog you don't know, or is it all working with your own dog(s)? It sounds fascinating either way.

Flying Whippet or Devil dog, enthusiasm is everything.

Good luck with the course, how cool, it is exactly what I was intending to do, but having discussed it at length with my behaviourist/trainer I have decided I am no where near good enough with people and seeing as the job is 90% people training 10% dog, I think I would be shite. I am very good with even the worst behaved canines but most people piss me right off and people who are crap with their dogs piss me off times a million, I can't see me getting much work Grin

Still ever so slightly Envy though, have a ball Smile

In my years most people took more than one dog. With the training to advanced level (when I did it so it easily could have changed) that was a sport or discipline that you did at home between residential. Although we did work on it at the residential. So as I already did agility I did competition obedience with one dog and then for fun also did HTM. I used a different dog for each discipline. I took all of my guys with me and sometimes had a foster who came along as well.

The more dogs you have the more case studies you have to use Smile. They do have to be happy being left in the car though. Do they still have the kennels that you can use? Although we had to pay for those.

They still have the kennels. I was planning on using those.

Devil dog would love agility, so would the flying whippet.
