Getting pup neutered in ten days.

She's 8 months old and I'm so worried already.

She's a cocker spaniel with typical lively spaniel traits.

I'm assuming she won't feel like walking much in the first few days? I really don't know?

Is it quite a simple op?

My 6 month old spaniel cross had her op 4 days ago (Thursday) and is totally back to normal.
She was really sore, tired and feeling sorry for herself on the first day and slept the whole afternoon (went in at 8.30 and picked her up at 4). She wouldn't eat either. She then woke us up 3 times during the night and had loose poos.

The next day she was much better although still with a dodgy tum till yesterday. We had her at the park for 3 hours on Saturday and she was raring to go but we kept her calm on a rug under a bench. She's now back on her food and jumping about like a maddy. The vet told us to walk her on lead till the stitches come out, nightmare! She bounced about on her walk last night, trying to play with other dogs, trying to chase rabbits, pulling my shoulder out of its socket. Think i'll need to avoid the nature reserve.

The vet didn't give us a E collar, just told us to go back if we needed one but the vet is closed over the weekend. She started licking the wound on Saturday so I put a baby's popper vest on her with a hole cut out for her tail, totally does the trick.

She had painkillers for 3 days but they're finished now so i'll wait and see how she's feeling today.

Your vet should give you 'what happens next' info.

The important thing is that she doesn't get too 'licky' or fussy with her stitches in the first few days especially. So use a buster collar if she is looking like she wants to pull at them.

The vet may ask you to go back in 10 days or so for stitches out, or they may use disolving ones.

Also, walks short and on a lead for the first few days. We tend to feel sorry for our dogs coming out of an op but they hardly seem to miss a beat so keeping her calm may be the biggest challange.

And yup its a routine op and especially with young slim dogs they are done in a matter of minutes.

If she isn't already chipped, you might like to ask the vet to do that while she is having the op so she wont even feel that.

Sometimes dogs have a little cough for 24hrs after an op. This is because a rubber tube goes down their airway while they are under and therefore sometimes the throat is a little irritated for a day or so afterwards.

The vet should also give you painkillers and/or antibiotics (depends of practice) for her for a few days after her neuter.

I know its really anxious when she goes in, but be happy that you are saving her from womb infections, and increasing protection from certain tumours in later life. As welll as helping her be happy and not frustrated :)

Thanks for the advice.

You've put my mind at rest a little. She's a lovely pup and I hate the thought she might be uncomfortable afterwards and she won't understand why.

But thanks for your tips and advice, I will follow them Smile I'd actually love her to have a litter of pups but I couldn't relax not knowing how they're being cared for and if they are being used by a breeder. So neutering it is.

Can't give any advice but you have my sympathy. My bonkers staffy was bouncing around like a bloody loon the day after her op, despite my best efforts. She was very depressed the first evening, but the following morning was her usual self, eating etc. she drove me mad worrying but. Vet said she would slow down if any pain so try not to worry and just try to moderate the running around/jumping stuff
