The doghouse

Study of positive training methods and punishment methods

This link shows evidence that punishment methods of training dogs is not as effective or long lasting and has more side effects than positive training methods.

The conclusion which reads" In conclusion, confrontational or aversive behavioral interventions applied by dog owners before their pets were
presented for a behavior consultation were associated with aggressive responses in many cases. Owners of dogs aggressive to family members are especially at risk for injury?and their pets at risk of relinquishment or euthanasia?when certain aversive methods are used" says it all really.

I think it is time for me to take a break from the dog house as I know which posters and what their comments will be on this study. (yawn yawn)

Also after spending many hours on eventually finding a foster home for a dog mentioned on mn and then the owner just going away for the day so all that time has been wasted shows me that my time can be spent more productively elsewhere.

That's a shame. You've been a very valuable poster here. I hope you don't stay away too long.

I have no idea whether you are regular poster under a name change of a relatively new poster but the doghouse does this from time to time.

We have an hysterical thread or two. People get all off huffity and hysterical about it. It gets mentioned on FB and other threads and then the doghouse becomes over run with pearl clutchers telling us how 'orrid we all are. Every now and again a thread will be started in AIBU about how to better control us and make us play nicely Grin

They all get bored after a few days and leave the doghouse for people want or are able to give actual advise. All except one poster who we just learn to ignore anyway. Or love in our special way Wink

I find it helps if you post something totally nonsensical every now and again on threads like those.

I understand why you're annoyed after all your work that OP is now away, but I understand that this trip was unavoidable and not something she especially wanted to do.

Stick around, herbert. I appreciate your advice. Those of us who are new to all this need people with experience to help us out :) I want to be a good, responsible owner who will hopefully have a happy, healthy dog for many, many years. If he makes it through adolesence before getting me in serious trouble

Herbert, I wish you'd stick around, as I think you've given invaluable advice to people, and it helps to have people who know what they are talking about to counteract the hysteria. But I know what you mean, it does get tiresome. Take care.

Herbertjane forgot the link, but she's referring to a study by Meghan Herron et al. You can read Sophia Yin's take on the study here and Stanley Coren's column on it here.

Herbertjane, I'd be very sorry to see you leave, and hope you reconsider. The vast majority of sensible posters on here value your input, and ignore those who claim to be able to train dogs with a raised eyebrow. Wink
