The doghouse

I am so proud of our neighbour's dog

As someone you know from previous postings, our neighbour's dog (henceforth called big boy) has adopted us and now lives with us.

Anyway, late last night, he went on the terrace outside our bedroom and started barking a lot. So went out to see. And there was a huge boar standing. By the oak tree, just at the base of the terrace. Big boy went down the stairs, ready for a stand-off with the beast. Boar just stood there, completely unfazed.

We called big boy back, as we didn't want him hurt. He came back but continue barking, ready to go down and confront the boar, if we allowed him to. In the meanwhile, girl dog stood safely on the terrace next to us, doing her best deepest growls. And puppy stuck his head out of the bedroom, saw/smelled the boar and retreated prudently to safety under the bed.

Heard lots of rustling, probably the boar's family crossing into the forest. Massive boar stood impassively, ignoring the dogs till the rustling stopped. Then he walked up and down a bit and then loped into the forest.

Big boy stood on guard outside the terrace the entire night, while we and the other two dogs slept in comfort indoors.

Ok, we were not really in any danger. The boar was hardly going to saunter up the terrace to our bedroom to stretch out on the bed. But still, big boy risked his life to protect us and I am very touched. It must have been scary facing a massive boar. And while big boy likes to posture with some male dogs, he is very scared of cats and other unknown creatures. So I am doubly touched as he is a softy lab/golden mix, not a typical guard dog type.

What has your pooch done recently to warm your cockles? Smile

We had our dog on the beach a few nights ago and my DP took him onto the rocks to run in the pools which he loves, normally I go onto the rocks too but as I am 33 weeks PG and did not really have the right footwear to be walking on slippery rocks DP told me to wait by the sea edge and he would take him as he didn't want to risk me slipping and hurting myself.

Off they went and after about a few minutes our dog turned round and saw I hadn't followed them and came straight back, sat by my feet looking out to sea waiting patiently for DP to negotiate the rocks back to us.

Since been Pg he also barges into the bathroom everytime I am in the bath and licks my arms or whatever he can reach then lays at the bathroom door watching me.

Bless him. :)

signet I have an image of your dog sat on the beach waiting for your DP to come back and looking at him like he's some kind of arsehole for leaving his pg DP on the beach on her own! Grin

Those are lovely stories.

Flat, what are you meant to do if you meet a wild boar when you are on foot? Or does it never happen? Domesticated pigs can be a bit fearsome so I don't think I'd fancy meeting a wild boar. (not that are any round here).

Red, I have no clue Grin. I think I would be frozen to the spot, couldn't move.

Ggirl, south of France. Boar and deer country. You sound very brave to have gone downstairs on your own, I don't think I could have...did you catch the burglars?

Signet, your dog sounds lovely Smile

Ah, I'm none the wiser then. I think I would be frozen to the spot too. Maybe that's the best thing, and it would just go away. I hope not to find out ;)

Two of ours fought off a stray a few weeks ago. We were walking with both big dogs and both puppies. DDs had the big dogs as they are already trained. Stray boxer attacked, aiming for DDs. Biggest big dog (40 kilos of German Shepherd) swung round in front of DD2 to sheid her and the smaller one got in front of DD2 and fought back when the stray lunged.

I really hope they don't get any ideas about seeing off the wildlife around here, we get bloody pumas coming down from the mountainsShock.

flatbread-i didn't realise there were burglars when i went down..I thought the dog had done a wee or something and wanted out...so was searching for a puddle.
They were hiding so I didn't see them...realised in the morning.
