The doghouse

Is a crate the answer for my unhappy greyhound?

We have two greyhounds. One is a bit highly strung/sensitive & a few weeks ago he pulled on his lead & it broke my finger. I had to have pins put in, plaster on and could not walk dogs. So DH walked them in morning & evening & I just let them in garden during the day. Then my sister took very ill & I have had to leave the dogs for about 3 hours to visit her in hospital most days. The dogs are normally fine when left in the past but the combination of their walking routine being changed & being left with DS age 13 has upset the sensitive one & he is now weeing in the house. He started doing this when I went out but has now done it even when I have been in. My house in pretty open plan but I could lock him out of the living room as that is one of the places he has done it although he will not be happy as this is his favourite place. Could a crate be the answer though not sure if will be able to coax him in. Really need to sort this out as have to go to a wedding next week & leave the dogs with a family member overnight(& they will not be too impressed with situation). They have had longer walks over Easter & I have even took them out one at a time myself to keep them happy (even though I am not supposed to) to no avail. Sorry for long post but I really need to try something else. Any advice appreciated. TIA

I'm sorry to hear about your broken finger and your sister. It's a lot for you to deal with at once. Have you used a biological cleaner, because even when we can't smell it any more sometimes a dog still can, and will go there again just because of the smell. It could also be a habit now, in which case locking him out of the living room would help to break the habit. I would also try and take the dog out to go to the toilet in the garden more and praise loads when they do.

Crate training can take a little while so although it could help, I am not sure if you could achieve it in a week. I suppose it depends on the dog.
