What sort of walking do you do?

Just being mosey really but I was wondering what sort of 'walk' you take your dogs on and if I'm doing enough
We have an 18 month old lab and by guidelines I think she should be having an hours walk a day.
She does get this most days and more others, sometimes split into 2 walks or 1 big one where we are pavement walking on a lead.
Other times we go to the local common land and throw balls and sticks etc and she runs about like a nutter!! She's always more pooped after this sort of activity but we may only do this for half an hour but she's charging about constantly
So my question is, is this enough? She is worn out when we get back but on both types tbh but just wondered which sort of walk you do and for how long?

I've got a 9 month old springer and he gets an hour a day (more at weekends). This is almost all off lead in the woods, so he runs about constantly, either exploring or fetching sticks. I can't manage more than an hour as have a toddler.

I've got a 2 year old whippet. He gets about 20-30 mins in the morning, about 30-40 mins mid-afternoon and about 30-40 mins in the evening during the week (so between 1 hour 20 up to 1 hour 50 per day). During the week all walks are on a lead as the park cloest to us is not secure to let a whippet off the lead. During the weekend his mid-day walk will usually be longer (we are often out for 1-2 hours) and that will usually include time for him to run off-lead in a secure area during that time (though running tends to be 5 mins fast running, then back to walking along gently).

We have a 18 month border terrier.
Walked every morning for an hour (on and off lead depending how many dogs about). Gets about 2 and a half miles at this time.
Then gets walked in evening for about 20 minutes also.
Sometimes she would get more than this but never less.

Sorry - morning walk in a forest.
Evening walk on footpath and on lead.

Have a terrier. She gets about an hour a day. Plus lots of time in the garden. Occasional longer walks at weekends/holidays.

Doesn't sound much but her predecessors, same breed, were generally healthy and slim and lived to 13 and 14, so I think it's fine.

I have a 1 year old lurcher/springer she gets about 2 hours walk a day plus free play to run in the garden. She gets longer at the weekend and once a week we go to the forest for about 4 hours she runs while my son attends 'forest school'-the day after she sleeps all day Grin

Forgot to add she is a fair weather dog though and if it's too cold or raining forget it-she turns her nose up and settles back in the sofa!

My cocker/springer cross gets 25 minutes twice a day on lead during the week, plus three 30 minute off lead runs fetching balls etc. At the weekends he gets at least 30 minutes off lead (often much longer) charging about like a loon, and a half hour lead walk. He also gets a lot of ball throws in the garden, several tarining sessions a day and loads of snoozes on the back of the sofa Grin

About an hour off lead every weekday morning including a lot of swimming and running with other dogs, more like two hours at weekends.

The huskies get 2.5-3 hours of walking per day - nearly all on-lead, as they have no recall, but they get a short off-lead run most days in a secure field. Some of this will be running cani-x style attached to a belt, 5k distances. All cross country, hill walking etc.

3 times a week from around October-March, dependent on temperature, they run in harness (pulling a rig/scooter/bike) up to 5k a time, though training runs are usually shorter than that. We compete occasionally which tends to be something like a 2k sprint race for the size of team I have.

Once a week one of them goes to agility training and they get more off-lead time before and after the lesson.

My one year old golden retriever was getting an hour off-lead run/chase non-stop, each morning and a 45 min off lead similar in the afternoon...until he started to ignore recall training and disappear over the fileds, hunting!

Since then - about a week or so ago, he now gets about 15 mins off-lead chasing hoops - but as there are no secure fields, this is v stressful for me, as he'll begin to run off if another dog comes, as he wants to play. So then we do a one hour brisk walk (country park). He then sleeps for about 4.5 hrs and then has an on-lead pavement walk for about 45 mins - which we both find v boring!

In an ideal world, I'd be doing 2 one hour off lead walks a day.

Mine would normally get 1.5 hours a day (longer on weekends) and a half hour to run around in a fenced area. The husky cross is on lead for the walks but Dog2 is allowed off-leash for some of it.

7 month pup, Lab x, gets half and hour pavement/track in the morning, then 20-30 min run/chase midday then maybe 20mins off lead/on lead early eve. A couple of times per week I'll do a walk along the river, more of an amble really, he doesn't really run around madly unless there's other dogs or a tennis ball!

I really try to vary where I walk though, even if it's just a different way to walk round the block- different fields, drive out to woods and so on.

Quick walk on a sat as we do 1 and 1/2 hr training class,

Long walk on a sun usually to a pub

3 year old rescued whippety-lurcher.

20 minutes predominantly off lead in the morning (canal towpath right behind our house)
15 minutes off lead at lunchtime (canal towpath again, opposite direction to the morning walk so as not to get bored)
40 minutes in the afternoon through local field and woods, off lead again (apart from walk to village to field/woods and back) chance to stretch legs and run run run

So one hour 20 max per day. He seems more than happy on this.

At the weekends we tend to do a 25 minute morning walk (canal towpath) and then one long (hour or so) afternoon walk on a nearby common or woodland a bit further afield (will go there by car) just for a change of scenery.

One giant breed and one very large crossbreed here. 2 walks per day.

Morning walk monday - Friday is 45 minutes to an hour off lead before work. We go to one of the local parks or a forest park - all within 10 minutes drive. Evening walk is about 30 minutes, half street walking on lead, half off lead along an old, disused railway line.

At weekends they get a longer morning walk off lead in one of the 3 contry parks local to us and swimming in the river all year round as long as conditions allow.

In summer, evening walks are often subsituted with swimming if it's too warm for walking (heavy coated breeds).

My one year old terrier gets an hour - hour and fifteen once a day - this is all off lead and 3-4 miles for me but double for her! She spends the whole time charging round like a loon. Somedays she is on her own other days it could be with 1,2,3, or even 5 others depending on who is about to walk with me.

In addition to that I play her favourite game in the garden - "ball throw" for about 30 minutes but could be up to an hour. I have to monitor this as it completely tires her out both mentally and physically especially if we play at night where she can't see exactly where I have thrown the ball. She loves it so much she would keep going forever! I don't do this everyday, maybe 4 times a week - really depends on how big her day walk was and how tired she is.

1 year old mix of saluki/retriever/GSD/all sorts.

High energy, ideally gets 90 minutes a day running on the beach, but sometimes the tides don't allow this, so I have to walk around the neighbourhood - this is very stressful (Muslim country, dogs at best an object of curiosity, at worst not welcome at all) because we get kids barking and shouting at us, men following us, cars hooting at us and there is also hazardous waste EVERYWHERE. Add the occasional sandstorm in the mix and this means that some days we don't go out at all. I'm dreading summer when it reaches 50 degrees as we basically won't be able to walk at all (last summer she was a puppy so it didn't matter so much). The sea is actually too hot to walk in when it gets that hot.

So please spare us a thought next time you are trotting through lovely green fields and forests in the pissing rain :)

My 1-year old lab collie x gets at least 1.5 hours a day. Most of it is off lead with her running around like a nutter as we live near lots of woods and open land.

11 month old retriever/staffy/crossbreed mix (size of a small lab), and he gets an hour - mostly off lead - twice a day. Sometimes less in the afternoon, if I'm in a rush to get to school.

Not very long walks, in reality - but lots of time spent playing and running around with other dogs/pups!

Elibean · 02/03/2012 14:42

Meaning, not very long in terms of distance covered.

1 year-old springer.

He gets 2-3 hours per day on weekdays, mostly off-lead (until we see another dog coming, as then he goes bonkers), split into a few walks with different family members.

On Sundays, DH and DSs usually do 10+ human miles out on the moor. Goodness knows how many springer miles that would be. Last Sunday he (dog, not DH) staggered through the kitchen door and fell asleep right there on the floor - didn't even make it to bed. Lightweight Grin
