Dogs jumping up, how to stop.

My dog is ok with not jumping up but not 100%, he will bound up to people, and leaves it at that, if the person starts waving arms running or screaming he sometimes jumps up, he is still being trained so we dont let him off in a public place where there are lots of people.

I sometimes let him off to train him in a quiet field nearby and if we see passers by (which is rare) we 95% of the time manage to get him back on the lead and even if we dont I can only think of one time he has managed to have jumped up on someone but that person was a teenager and was running round playing with him.

I feel like I am in a catch 22 if I dont let my dog off he wont learn but if I do he may jump up on someone. What do I do to make not bound off? I usually call and treat, but even so he still bounds off sometimes.

What's he like when he's on a lead? Does he still try to jump up at people?

He is fine on the lead and doesnt try to jump or misbehave.

Ok, well that's my suggestion out of the window then, lol. I was going to suggest doing treat/clicker training whilst on lead, but seeing as this isn't a problem then I don't know what to suggest.

Hopefully someone will come along soon with some helpful advice.

perhaps do more recall work with him initally and up the treats ?

So work on recall when there is no one about with a good tasty treat - then when you are around passerbys before he shoots off recall him give him a treat , play with him and make it more fun to be with you than the passerby.

Would a dog whistle combined with his faverite treat work to really strenghten recall, if I use the whistle soley for recall?

You need to build up the distractions on your recall training.

So if you are at home and not much going on and call him I expect he will come.

So next stage is to build up the recall give him harder distractions. Maybe get the DC to be playing with him and then call him - Will he come then?

Throw a ball and recall him away from the ball - will he come then?

To use a whistle you need to make it a pavolvian response for the dog so at home put the dog in another room prepare his dinner blow the whistle and let the dog come rushing for his dinner. Do this for several days maybe a week before you try the whistle in another place.

Next step is for you to go down the bottom of the garden with his dinner - getting someone to hold him and let him see what you are doing and then whistle and he should come charging to you.

What you are doing is making the whistle really exciting and soon even in other locations what the dog does when he hears the whistle is charge to you.

Re the jumping up he knows not to jump up when things are calm so set up situations when people are jumping up and down and click him when he stays calm. Get friends and family and you to jump up and down in front of him be really exciting and click his calm behaviour.

He will come at any point other than if there are new people around the ball is fine.
