I've seen 3 episodes of series 9. I hope the Internet theory that the mother dies isn't true although I have a suspicion that Robin or barney might die.

the writers said a main cast character dies.

Based on what I've seen, the mother's personality isn't what I expected it to be.

Any predictions on how it'll end?

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 12:31:14

Someone dies? I'm on episode 14 and all still alive. Some truly shit episodes and some brilliant ones.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 12:51:17

That's what the writers said in a press conference. They made The Mother a main cast member so I wonder if that's who dies?

I'm guessing it'll be revealed in the final ever episode.

I enjoyed and thought the last episode was good - how your mother met me. Didn't expect her to be like that. I guess I always thought Victoria would be the mother.

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 12:59:07

The mother is so much like lily. I like her.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage Fri 31-Jan-14 13:15:06

There's something Ted said to his children in one episode early in the series which made me think the mother was going to die - it was one of the "truly shit" episodes (thanks TheNight - exactly what I think of the series so far, I wondered if I was just being a grump when I found some of the episodes totally unfunny).

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 13:17:36

What does he say dupain?

DuPainDuVinDuFromage Fri 31-Jan-14 13:23:05

I wasn't sure whether to say it in case it was a bit of a spoiler for people who hadn't seen it but since you're asking!

It's the episode where it's all about "what if I'd done this instead of that" sort of thing, if I remember rightly, and it ends with Ted saying something like "I would have done anything if it meant spending another second with your mother" - not that but along those lines, I'm rubbish at remembering! But it definitely gave the impression that he wasn't going to be spending any time with her any more, and I wondered if the whole basis for telling the kids how he met their mother was because they'd just lost her sad

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 13:28:11

DuPain the slap one was fucking awful. I kept hoping it would get better hmm

I think Barney might die. I read a theory once that he's never referred to like he's alive to the kids, whereas the others are.

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 14:06:02

Not Barney. Please not Barney.

I think it's ted and the kids are watching a video as he explains how he met the mother.

chanie44 Fri 31-Jan-14 14:27:15

I think it's ted they dies, it would make sense.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage Fri 31-Jan-14 15:12:35

That would fit TheNight and the kids ever talk back? They roll their eyes when Ted goes off on a tangent but I'm sure I remember them saying the odd thing too - or am I wrong?

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 16:20:45

The kids interact with ted though don't they? And in the first episode don't they say "are we being punished?" When he says hes going to tell them how he met their mother.

If the mother is dead wouldn't that be massively inappropriate?

Doesn't ted refer to barney as uncle barney?

chanie44 Fri 31-Jan-14 16:29:07

I thought it may have robin who dies as ted tells his children about 'uncle Barney's wedding'. If Barney and robin were married and robin were still alive, surely he would have said it was Barney and robins wedding.

Unless there is some story behind why it's called Barney's wedding which I missed.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 16:34:02

Doesn't he call it aunt robin and uncle barneys wedding?

The story starts with ted meeting Robin I wonder if it concludes with her dying in the future (2030).

We know she's definitely alive when Marvin is 17 (mike tyson story)

SliceOfLime Fri 31-Jan-14 16:34:55

Oohh thanks for posting this, I can't wait for the new series!

Yes in the first series the kids would respond to red but now they don't, I think just so they can re-use the same footage of the kids grin. Ted definitely refers to 'your aunt robin' AND I remember when he said something like "I would have done anything for extra time with your mother" but I decided not to be morbid and to assume the best not the worst... But you do see lots of flash forward things with Lily and Marshall so it can't be one of them... Noooo I don't want any of them to die!

yellowsnownoteatwillyou Fri 31-Jan-14 16:39:55

Very excited about the new series, I hope it's good.
Dh has a theory (general wondering about what it means)based on the episode that had ted in the bar by himself and barney arrived saying it wasnt real and that this happened months or years ago.(can't remember) then he ran to the mothers house. So he thinks ted dies or is in a coma.

IRCL Fri 31-Jan-14 16:47:38

No none of them can die! :O
I liked the last one which focused it on the mother's perspective.

the rhyming one I thought was shit.

overall though I love HIMYM. grin

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 16:50:35

DP thinks Robin dies.

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 16:56:53

I'm placing my bets that it's Ted who dies but in the present (when he's telling the story). Like he's ill and dying and that's why he's telling them how he met their mother. And he will finish the story, with the last episode switching back to him and the children in the present day and then he will die.

Either that or the mother.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 17:02:04

The 45 extra days speech was moving wasn't it.

Sometimes I find Ted to be a massive jerk like he just wont let Robin be happy with barney but that speech made me feel sorry for him.

BigW Fri 31-Jan-14 17:08:21

OMG one of them dies??? Flowery your theory sounds plausible.

I thought they were doing a How I Met Your Father spin off. is that wrong then?

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 17:26:02

They are doing a How I met your father spin off from the mother's perspective.

If ted is dying the kids seem awfully rude and blasé about hearing their dying father talk

I think the mother dies. Fits in with the whole max thing, the time travellers speech and making her main cast member when she's not in it that much.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 17:28:30

Either her or barney or Robin.

Could explain why after all those years why marshall opened Lilys death letter. The death could've prompted him to open Lilys letter.

In the flash foward of their college reunion Teds crying laughing saying "where's my wife?" After smoking a sandwich. Wonder if this means she's alive?

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 17:51:09

Good point about the kids hmmm this is hard! That's where's my wife bit could mean she's dead too. Like the kind of laughing you do before you cry. "Where's my wife? She should be here too..." type thing?

And oh dear a spin off? Does that mean the mum will be telling the kids and therefore is alive?!

So maybe it's Barney or Robin. We've got to get this.
There must be a clue somewhere <strains brain>

Scaredycat3000 Fri 31-Jan-14 18:20:46

Well I'd heard no rumors. Putting spoiler alert before giving away any major plot line would have been nice, to late now. I didn't read past the first post, goes off grumpily...........

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 18:33:53

The writers announced this in a press conference so not sure if this counts as a spoiler. It hasn't been shown nor confirmed just something the writers publicly announced, perhaps to drum up a bit oof publicity.

Imo a spoiler is announcing something that definitely has or will happen.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 18:36:15

In the mike tyson episode did you notice future Robin hides her left hand? Possibility she and barney don't marry?

Could both the mother and barney die and ted abd Robin end up together??

CarolineKnappShappey Fri 31-Jan-14 18:38:31

Doesn't Ted once list all the things Robin has done, which are in the future from our pov. So she can't die.

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 18:46:38

Yes he does in the one where she can't have children I think.

Crosses robin off list.

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 19:06:47

She can't die after she does those things? I can't remember what they are so are they things she could do between the past and the present?

Trills Fri 31-Jan-14 19:31:42

Maybe they were just messing with us.

"Someone is going to die" is almost a cliche now.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 19:33:29

Agree with flowery they could be the things she's done already - think one of them was become a bullfighter?

Apparently another thing I read was that colbie smulders upon reading the final episode script ran out of the room crying. Don't know what that means, if it means robin dies? Barney and robin don't get married? Ted dies or the mother or simply that she was emotional at reading the final ever script, but it's intriguing!

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 19:34:08

trills could very well be - or it could be a a bit of a trick statement or something.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 19:35:04

The episode where robin is talking to her non existent future kids is really sad.

BigW Fri 31-Jan-14 19:48:29

What if Ted's kids don't really exist and his wife dies before they ever have children, or even before they get married and it is like a grief thing from Ted...

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 21:11:55

Oh god bigW that's too sad to even think about! Very vanilla sky.

I do think its odd how Ted has told his kids how much he's in love with Robin.

BigW Fri 31-Jan-14 21:17:25

i often think that! He really bangs on about it! If my DH spent all these years telling my kids how much he was in love with his ex (who is still sees) I wouldn't be happy!

Scardy- SPOILER he meets their mother gringringringringringrin

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 22:26:50

Just read a theory that blew me away! This is the theory:

Barney and ronin got married and he died shortly after the wedding (2-3 Yeats after)

Ted and the mother get married, have children etc, and in the year 2030 when Ted is telling the story, she has just died

He and robin have now decided to get married

He's explaining to his children how much he loved their mother and always will (the time travellers speech) but is also explaining how much robin meant to him and how he lived her

This would explain why Marshall said "not yet" when lily asked him he he thought it was the end of the Ted and robin story in series 8 (after the locket episode)

Mind blowing right??

Marshall says not yet because their story didn't end, even after they married different people, they were meant to be together.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 22:27:21

Robin....dont know who ronin is lol

BigW Fri 31-Jan-14 22:30:05

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 22:30:14

I don't know about that one. I don't think he'd emphasise the "aunt" robin thing the whole way through if he was about to say "she's your new mom!". God I just want to know now! When is it aired?

BigW Fri 31-Jan-14 22:31:09

MG! That's plausible. That could be it.

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 22:36:51

Ooh I just read something that makes me doubt ted is dead or the mother is dead (it's something someone pointed out to me further up about my ted theory).

If either parent has died or is dying, the kids would be more interested in the story. Why would they be so rude if they are aware one of the parents they are told about is dead or dying? If it applies to the idea of ted dying it would apply to the mother being dead too.

But then if it was uncle Barney or aunt robin who died, they would also be sad and not rude.

Unless! The person who has died, they barely knew as they died while the teenagers were little and it's just one of dad's old friends to them. What if robin did all the amazing stuff she does because Barney dies and she decides to do all the things she can do in a sort of tribute memory thing?

I think I'm swaying onto the Barney theory.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 23:09:28

flowery I made the comment about the kids being blasé and rude about hearing Teds story.

Your theory totally makes sense - that she travelled the world, became a bullfighter etc after barney died. I bet he left her a note or said something along the lines of making sure her life is awesome of legendary.

God are we massively over thinking this? Lol don't care it's fun!

The new series starts on Thursday in the uk and think it's like 17-18 episodes long?

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 23:11:24

Ooh yes! I like that legendary thing idea! I could imagine that.

I bet the real story is so boring and we are all like hmm when it's on.

I can't wait though.

It's going to be legen - wait for it - DARY

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 23:11:36

I just thought though, if barney dies a couple years after getting married, the kids wouldn't even remember him they would've been a toddler and baby. If that's the case, why would he refer to barney and uncle barney? Just out of respect?

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 23:14:01

Yeah kind of like because robin is aunt robin, her husband would be uncle Barney even though he's dead. Because he will have been uncle Barney when they were a toddler and baby so he just carries on maybe?

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 23:14:46

I bet the real ending is barney and robin get married have great adventures, Ted and the mother get married, 2 kids live happily ever after, and Marshall and lily have 2-3 more kid. Bet it ends with them having a BBQ in teds back yard - reference from the episode he first buys the house.

I really hope it's not a lame ending!

FloweryFeatureWall Fri 31-Jan-14 23:16:10

Yeah haha! I'm just glad we get an ending. I used to moan to my ex that it would get cancelled before we meet the mother so there was no point getting too invested. Glad I was wrong!

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 23:17:22

This maybe over analysing but when ted, barney and Marshall get together to watch the star wars films and it's in the future, and ted brings out his baby girl. Did anyone notice if barney is wearing a wedding ring? Because at that point he should be married to robin.

I would be really upset if they don't get married.

FlyAwayToMalibu Fri 31-Jan-14 23:19:01

Apparently the writers decided that if the show got cancelled after series 2, it was going to be revealed that victoria was going to be the mother.

TheNightIsDark Fri 31-Jan-14 23:39:26

I don't like Ted and robin together hmm

I really hope it's not that ending.

FlyAwayToMalibu Sat 01-Feb-14 09:14:23

I prefer barney and Robin
