Crap soaps are so much fun MN style so does anyone watch Waterloo road and want to play 'where are they from?' 'How unrealistic' and 'who is head this week?'

I love it!

I'm sure it's got worse; more obvious and clichéd as each episode goes on. I'm still watching though... it's my guilty pleasure.

AlphaBetaOoda Thu 12-Sep-13 22:19:56

I watched some ok all of the old ones on lovefilm, was interesting how many educational 'trends' actually showed up to be replaced the next week like in Gove world

I didn't like Christine initially but there's a bit more to her now. Angus Deayton could be interesting (guess we've all realised he's a con?)

SpanishFly Fri 13-Sep-13 06:03:04

Yeah the school will get the money they need to change the curriculum so they can learn Mandarin, and he won't be able to actually speak it. Although his wife can teach him, surely?

Imogen and Connor are awful.

Mumof3xx Fri 13-Sep-13 06:14:43

Who is that woman doing the mandarin she seems to show up in a lot of things

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 13-Sep-13 07:50:31

Yes at least they'll leave this time.

The NQT dress last night was awful too

Mistyshore Fri 13-Sep-13 09:25:15

The mandarin woman was in Corrie and ran off with Graeme (breaking Tina's heart).

Listmaker Fri 13-Sep-13 09:30:20

She was also in that thing about the lottery winners wasn't she? As a Thai transvestite. Bet she would love a part where she's a strong feisty proper woman - all she's played are clichéd far eastern women so far...

But yes Waterloo Road really is the biggest load of rubbish going - I watch it for the comedy value now. Those kids are in the 6th form I assume and all doing languages (including Mandarin?!) and Science........really?!

What's meant to be happening with Grantly - anyone know? Now he can't have Tom's kidney......

Mumof3xx Fri 13-Sep-13 09:38:03

Grantlys dead isn't he?

Grantly is just alive. He is shown lying around the staff room a lot.

Yes it seems Mandarin and science and a bit of English are the lessons they have. PE too but only a few people

mumofthemonsters808 Fri 13-Sep-13 09:45:33

Me and DD love Waterloo Rd, it reminds me of a modern day Grange Hill.

Mumof3xx Fri 13-Sep-13 11:11:19

I thought he died lol

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 13-Sep-13 12:40:21

Nope he was in the staff room as if nothing happened

KatoPotato Fri 13-Sep-13 12:41:44

Ooh oooh! Delighted to find this!

Here's my first bother... Secretary tells Audrey she's phoned the RSPCA... presumably they'd have told her to phone the SSPCA?

eh? Eh?

I luffs WR it is so rubbish!

alemci Fri 13-Sep-13 13:39:03

compulsive viewing somehow. poor mizi the cat..

hattymattie Fri 13-Sep-13 15:25:16

Did Tom not die so Grantley would have got the kidney. I thought this was a bit tame compared to Educating Yorkshire which followed on on Channel 4.

Mumof3xx Fri 13-Sep-13 15:53:29

Old wr was well better IMO

Don't like the new kids or staff

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 13-Sep-13 19:12:33

Katopotato yep it's so rubbish its good!

MyBoysAreFab Fri 13-Sep-13 19:18:24

Did Tom die? shock I have watched WR on and off for years. Used to love it. It is total tat now.

What happened to the one who had all the money and opened the school in Scotland? Have you noticed the odd surnames all the characters have, like Salt and Chalk? And just how old is the actor who plays Barry Barry?

Mumof3xx Fri 13-Sep-13 19:24:55

Tom fell off a roof

Think her with the money didnt have much money left? I dunno

EduCated Fri 13-Sep-13 19:39:41

You know what, behaviour might be awful, teachers might be dying left right and centre, they may have appointed the school's arsonist as the head teacher, but never, not once, have any of those children sworn grin

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 13-Sep-13 21:17:22

nennypops Fri 13-Sep-13 22:45:49

I was a bit bemused as to why they're suddenly reduced to Havelock's ancient cast-off text books. Surely rich lady kitted them out with full sets of textbooks brand new last year? I can't believe she's taken them with her.

KatoPotato Sat 14-Sep-13 00:17:57

But remember rich Lorraine played a completely different character about four seasons ago? She was an ex pupil compulsive liar who took all the pupils to a fake house?

Here's a link to a vine I made about poor Tom...

AlphaBetaOoda Sat 14-Sep-13 07:27:40

I watched all the old ones up to S6 recently & got confused over that !

1944girl Mon 16-Sep-13 00:25:10

I am sure the actor who plays Grantly was in that soap about firemen, I think it was called Red Watch, He played the one known as Sicknote as he was always taking time off.

DramaQueenofHighCs Mon 16-Sep-13 00:44:41

I'm afraid all I can think is that if I went to Waterloo Road I'd be spending all my time in the PRU!! Nikki Boston (aka Heather Peace) is fit as!!
I'm afraid I love the show - though I'm not afraid to admit that many of the story lines are far fetched, a lot of the staff and students are actually quite believable characters! (At least in the schools I've been to.)
I just can't believe Audrey got let off so lightly for what was in effect trespassing in a student's house! Feel a bit sorry for her though tbh.

AlphaBetaOoda Mon 16-Sep-13 07:17:42

Londons burning? Was he really sicknote?

1944girl Mon 16-Sep-13 19:02:30

London's Burning that was the name.I am sure he was Sicknote.

EduCated Mon 16-Sep-13 19:06:13

Wasn't strict teacher lady in that too?

AlphaBetaOoda Mon 16-Sep-13 19:12:02

She def was.

KatoPotato Mon 16-Sep-13 19:25:11

Grantley is not sick note! He was in a few episodes of the bill and casualty and was in tinker tailor soldier spy.

AliceinSlumberland Mon 16-Sep-13 19:36:16

I too love Waterloo road although much preferred the old series and feel that none of the new staff are likeable at all except for Nikki Boston. I hate the head and the new deputy/nqt storyline is naff. It's gone even more ott than ever before but I still watch it! I just hope they get some new staff and students soon, I really hate Connor and Imogen, and was the person who wrote 'Barry Barry' in taking the piss?!?!

Also can't see how the school is so poor, doesn't the rich one still fund the schoolhouse?

JustBecauseICan Tue 17-Sep-13 14:00:43

The Nikki one played a madster wronged wife who sobbed and hiccupped very loudly in a thing about vets. <vague> Keith Barron played the dad who dropped dead with a heart attack (as he has done in every thing he's been in for the last 30 years)

Her husband ran off with thingy- Zoe with the ginormous bottom in Casualty and she (Nikki) went a bit Glenn Close about it all.

I loved WR at the beginning, but so much death! <will no one think of the children>

Tom IRL would have been fingered years ago for having lots of dead girlfriends in suspicious circumstances.

Why does each series have to start with some underclass scummy family who, surprise! turn out to have Hearts Of Gold and be Very Clever or Good at Something?

DramaQueenofHighCs Wed 18-Sep-13 07:47:03

Heather Peace (who plays Nikki Boston) has been in LOADS of things - including London's Burning. She is also a majorly talented singer and song writer.

AlphaBetaOoda Sat 21-Sep-13 20:11:55

Catching up on this weeks.
What happened with Angus Deayton getting DH job?

invicta Sat 21-Sep-13 20:21:55

Barry Barry was born in 1994.

My boys love this show.

YoniBottsBumgina Sat 21-Sep-13 20:25:36

Oh I miss WR! So ridiculous! I will live vicariously through you lot because I can't be arsed to install lots of software just so I can watch iplayer.

I agree it was far better in the early days though. Up to Season 5 part 1 I think was good, after that, no, ridiculous. Funny though.

YoniBottsBumgina Sat 21-Sep-13 20:28:19

Connor and Imogen are bleurgh though, I agree. Most boring/annoying couple in it.

AlphaBetaOoda Sat 21-Sep-13 21:37:44

Angus Deayton does seem to have upped the WTF factor as I can't take him seriously at all never mind the unlikely storylines!

Judybluey Sat 21-Sep-13 21:44:18

Oooh love WR but I don't think this series is going to be as good as last one...I just feel all nostalgic watching school dramas reminiscing about first crushes, end of term discos etc wink

nennypops Sun 22-Sep-13 10:48:39

Grantly didn't play Sicknote in London's Burning. That was Richard Walsh; the actor who plays Grantly is Philip Martin Brown.

AlphaBetaOoda Thu 26-Sep-13 21:03:01

Why's Barry Barry in a suit?

KareninsGirl Thu 26-Sep-13 23:43:26

I wondered that too, alpha! Perhaps he thinks he's on par with the teachers and they're just pleased he's taking pride in his appearance...who knows? I don't really understand why any of the characters do what they do any more.

Imogen and Connor are highly irritating, yes.

I'd love to see a visit by Michael Gove feature in an episode haha!

MiaowTheCat Fri 27-Sep-13 08:16:53

It started off amusing -then got really shit with the move to Scotlamd and I couldn't watch the season with the PRU in as it had got so bad. It's just recycling the same storylines now - the language teacher without a clue was done with Denise Welch before, and the staff member - student temptation thing that dragged on for months with the Spanish teacher... and Barry Barry is just embarassingly awful! Oh yeah and the annual "NQT who is shit and gets locked in a cupboard but will be a good member of staff by episode 6" story too.

I still love Grantly though - just the one liners about how ridiculous it all is.

There are many things I'd like to see happen to Mr Gove (mainly involving a steam roller and his face) but WR isn't one of 'em!

KareninsGirl Fri 27-Sep-13 08:42:23

miaow, perhaps MG's face could indeed be steamrollered by an errant teen in Waterloo Road? Best of both words then...

Kikithecat Fri 27-Sep-13 09:15:49

So I guess I'm on my own in starting to fancy Barry Barry?blush

KareninsGirl Fri 27-Sep-13 09:45:04

kiki, no, my daughter's best friend fancies him (but she is only 13 lol)

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 27-Sep-13 11:34:53

<backs away from kiki >

Kikithecat Fri 27-Sep-13 12:48:57

Come on Alpha, I know you're in denial.

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 27-Sep-13 15:22:39

<backs faster>

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 27-Sep-13 15:22:48

Blondeshavemorefun Fri 27-Sep-13 18:48:40

I never watched this when first on years ago. So catching up on cbs. Almost at end of s4 think 5 starts tonight

What series is bbc 1 showing?

I am enjoying tho all teachers seem to shag each other. grin

EduCated Fri 27-Sep-13 19:06:25

I miss Izzy and Mica. The newer series make their lives look boring by comparison sad

nennypops Fri 27-Sep-13 20:24:43

I get increasingly irritated at the way they keep portraying Kevin as essentially thinking with his dick. He's meant to be mega bright, I thought he'd get round the problem with Barry's criminal mate in the last series by thinking up something clever that criminal mate couldn't cope with, instead he went after him with a gun and got into trouble.

Also, how come he only had £300 in savings? I thought he earned megabucks from the game app or whatever it was?

alemci Fri 27-Sep-13 21:47:25

yes I thoght the same about kevin

also grantleys wife now teacher

in the other series their used to be other locations etc but now everything happens at school.

is barry dynasty s twin as they are in the same class.

OodAlpha Thu 03-Oct-13 20:51:30

Bump cos its Thursday

Skelacia Thu 03-Oct-13 21:06:10

h I didn't realise this was back! I luffs it and thanks to having sedation today I'm off work tomorrow and can spend the day catching up on iPlayer. I think I must have missed the end of last series as well, Tom is dead and Grantley lives?!?!

EduCated Thu 10-Oct-13 21:12:24

Fuck me, they've killed Grantley!

Just as he turned nice!

alemci Thu 10-Oct-13 22:24:37

liked grantly shamesad

MiaowTheCat Fri 11-Oct-13 13:35:58

Not Grantly! Best character in there (and probably the truest to life to be honest)! Who the hell is going to teach English in the school now - or is the department going to disappear like the French and Spanish ones did?!

OohDoctorDarcy Fri 11-Oct-13 15:40:30

Caught up now!
shock at Grantly those kids must have constant bereavement counselling!

So currently you can learn mandarin & home ec.& attend Science lessons but not learn cos she's crap

WhisperMen Fri 11-Oct-13 18:02:39

sad poor grantley. He was the best. I can't stand the cast they have now, but I still watch it every week in the hopes it might get better.

Sponsored clean to fund her boxing? Who on earth is sponsoring them? Christine said she will give them £5, but no one else did...

MiaowTheCat Fri 11-Oct-13 19:05:35

I have to say the school cleaner was factually accurate compared to my old school where they never DID do any bloody cleaning!

OohDoctorDarcy Fri 11-Oct-13 19:54:53

The never having a full staff of cleaners is true IME too

GrandpaInMyBlender Sat 12-Oct-13 22:00:42

You can learn history too (Audrey) and French (George and some nameless teacher mentioned a few eps ago). And PE (mr lowsley). You're fucked for English and Maths though! grin

AliceinSlumberland Sat 12-Oct-13 22:03:03

Two of their English teachers are dead and one is the head, they don't take on staff very often though do they.

alemci Sun 13-Oct-13 10:46:25

yes they never replaced Chalky for maths did they.

You can also do food tech and textiles at the same time under Mrs Budgeon.

wow she did her teacher training very quickly.

are the older ones meant to be A level students? All seem to do the same options.

OohDoctorDarcy Sun 13-Oct-13 12:17:16

It's Scotland so not sure how that works. Plus they were independent (& could do own curriculum ) and now aren't.

taking this far too seriously

We don't have GCSEs or A levels up here in Scotland - they do Standard Grades (GCSE equivalents) at the end of year 11, Highers at the end of year 12 (these fall between AS levels and A levels), and Advanced Highers at the end of year 13 - these are A levels-plus - apparently they cover at least some of the work covered in the first year of degrees up here.

We live about half an hour's drive from Greenock, where it is filmed, and when we were down that way one day, I made dh drive me round until we found the Actual School where it is filmed! It is funny to see what bits they film in which parts of Greenock and Gourock, and to marvel at how they manage to get from one bit to another so fast and on foot!

I haven't watched this week's episode yet - I am going to settle down in front of the tv this afternoon, with my knitting, and watch it on Sky+ - but I have seen something on this thread that is a bit shock - Grantley dies??!

GrandpaInMyBlender Sun 13-Oct-13 13:49:50

Get the tissues ready SDT. Its really upsetting sad

SpanishFly Mon 04-Nov-13 10:47:38

Did anyone notice the Barrys' mum wearing Spanx under her leggings smile

redexpat Tue 05-Nov-13 09:51:34

I've just finished series 1 on the danish version of netflix. Wow it is awful. Why, if shortly after your wedding, your BF and your DH got together would you be wishing them all the best and saying that the most important thing is to remain fiends? Or is she really plotting their downfall?

SpanishFly Tue 05-Nov-13 15:23:19

redexpat That is the brilliance of Waterloo Road. And the even more worrying thing is that each series gets even less believable than the last!

redexpat Tue 05-Nov-13 19:16:13

Thank you spanish I am now prepared for some good fiction smile

NancyShrew Fri 08-Nov-13 18:05:32

My goodness the season finale was a serious tear jerker!
