Is it just me or was it seriously crap and unfunny with absolutely nothing to say?

Veneto Fri 16-Aug-13 21:43:56

No not just you. Your post has summed up my thoughts perfectly.

difficultpickle Fri 16-Aug-13 21:44:00

It really wasn't at all funny, was it? I kept waiting to laugh but nothing.

KenDoddsDadsDog Fri 16-Aug-13 21:44:49

I was just perving at Gleinster. Even fit in a nylon track suit .

cafenoir Fri 16-Aug-13 22:11:58

Glad it wasn't just me. I just don't understand how anyone (over 9 years old) could have written that script and thought "Yes, totally nailed it. Excellent stuff." It shouldn't have seen the light of day.

Davros Fri 16-Aug-13 22:36:59

We can only hope it's first episode syndrome. It's got such a good cast but I agree, lame!

I watched 17 seconds before I decided it was shite.

mrswimpeydimple Fri 16-Aug-13 22:42:42

What do you expect from David Walliams? He's sooooooo overrated.

Lorelilee Fri 16-Aug-13 23:39:29

I cannot take to Catherine Tate in anything. Ever. Always comes across as SO "aren't I a comedy genius" smug.

Ellenora5 Sat 17-Aug-13 04:03:38

Complete and utter rubbish, not one bit funny, I cringed my way through it, David Walliams is not funny, Catherine Tate stopped being funny years ago, at one point I thought I was watching an outtake of Stella, big Alan and his ex....confused

ComtesseDeFrouFrou Sat 17-Aug-13 04:32:36

But I feel that way about a lot of sitcoms these days. They all just seem so clunky and deliberate. I'd much rather watch something serious with the occasional flash of clever wit.

hackmum Sat 17-Aug-13 12:01:28

I laughed out loud at all the bits with Frances de la Tour in it. That woman can turn base metal into comedy gold.

But I have to admit that the rest of it was like a poor 70s sitcom, with ruder jokes. Both the David Walliams character and the Philip Glenister character gave me the creeps. I don't like Walliams at the best of times and the Glenister character wasn't just pervy, he was rather sinister.

twistedtoffee Sat 17-Aug-13 12:06:13

Apparently it picks up considerably in the next episode.

I agree last night was a bit lame. It was a mish mash of all previous school comedies - there's always a thick horny gym teacher.

mirry2 Sat 17-Aug-13 12:26:03

I'm surprised. It had terrific reviews

VelvetSpoon Sat 17-Aug-13 12:31:23

I actually thought it was pretty good.

Much better than the god-awful Mrs Brown programme that followed it, which I fail to see any humour in (Loads of people on my fb are always raving about idea why!)

mrswimpeydimple Sat 17-Aug-13 13:03:59

Agree Frances de la Tour was the best bit, she was brilliant in Viscous too.

MexicanHat Sat 17-Aug-13 13:04:54

I enjoyed it enough to give it another go. Laughed a couple of times but it seriously needs to improve.

MexicanHat Sat 17-Aug-13 13:08:27

Agree Velvet - awful programme!!

Gigondas Sat 17-Aug-13 13:18:33

Switched off after 10 minutes as was dire.

LIZS Sat 17-Aug-13 19:51:14

So predictable that ds had the punchlines well in advance. Not sure how it will sustain for the rest of the series.

hackmum Sun 18-Aug-13 10:51:20

"there's always a thick horny gym teacher."

In life, as well as on tv. smile

I found it slow and forced at times, like the bit when she went to get her bag from the car, she didn't have to go through the window she could have just opened the door.

Will see what the next episode is like!

Nancy66 Sun 18-Aug-13 14:02:17

didn't do it for me at all. Very clichéd and 'see the gag coming a mile off'

cafenoir Sun 18-Aug-13 20:24:44

It got absolutely slated in today's Times.

fussychica Tue 20-Aug-13 18:44:14

Yet another unfunny British comedy - Big Bang/Parks & Recreation/New Girl/Frasier it ain't.

Ellenora5 Fri 23-Aug-13 23:57:27

Well it wasn't any funnier tonight, so I'm done with that now.

BackforGood Sat 24-Aug-13 00:02:38

I caught it by accident tonight, doing a bit of channel hopping, but switched over after about 5mins - really dire.

Absolutely dire. Bbc comedy only seem to have one format, which is immature grown ups doing things badly with lots of gurning. Pathetic

NadiaWadia Sat 24-Aug-13 05:36:04

Well it was mildly amusing. Very, very mildly. Maybe it will get better.

But what I can't understand is why you often get brilliant actors like Frances de la Tour, Catherine Tate, etc. agreeing to appear in distinctly average stuff like this, and the TV companies agreeing to commission it. The quality of the actors and the quality of the writing do not match up.

Another example is that crime drama Field of Blood(?) set in 80s Scotland that was on a couple of weeks ago. I saw David Morrissey was in it, so thought it must be good, but had to give up watching halfway through the 1st episode.

Surely there are some suitably brilliant writers out there?

KenDoddsDadsDog Sat 24-Aug-13 08:05:34

Even Gleinster couldn't save it for me. Switched over this week.

JakeBullet Sat 24-Aug-13 09:53:13

Glenister is fab in it....the one saving grace.

Thing is that even Only Fools and Horses got mediocre ratings etc for the first two seasons.

I think that this has got potential to be very long as Glenister stays. grin

littlecrick Sat 24-Aug-13 10:01:19

I thought I'd really enjoy it, but actually I didn't smile once through the whole program. Still it didn't help that I was nursing a poorly child on my knee the whole time.

MissWimpyDimple Sat 24-Aug-13 13:00:04

Yep thought it too. Trying to persevere but it's baaaaad.

FannyMcNally Sun 25-Aug-13 14:36:51

Bloody awful. The staff room looked like it was from the 70s sitcom 'Please Sir!' with the same stereotypical characters to match. Won't be watching again.

fussychica Thu 29-Aug-13 19:07:05

They could just show Please Sir! again. At least that seemed fresh & funny at the time.

Pixel Sun 01-Sep-13 00:10:40

Ok, have come to confess it's growing on me blush.

This week I did enjoy the hiding in the car during the 'drugs deal' and arguing over whose school was worst, laughed at "If it's about the trampoline I've no idea how it got on ebay", and also the 'dirty dancing' bit where Mr Church and Miss Postern discussed whether to do 'the lift' and she didn't want to tell him her weight so said she had a lot in her pockets (I intend to steal that line at a future date).

Guess there's no hope for

NadiaWadia Tue 03-Sep-13 04:23:09

I agree Pixel, I think it is improving. It still could do better, but I have kept watching for the sake of the brilliant cast, and laughed quite a few times at the latest ep.
