ooh, its Ben!

Rory Kinnear looks just like his dad!

He's a spoof character, e.g. Alan partridge or Keith Lemmon, who behaves in a ridiculous way and says stupid things which make some of us laugh. He's quite a developed character with the illusion of "being in show business" who is supposed to have had some moderate success many years ago and believes he is some sort of star. There have been 6 (or possibly 7) radio series already, you could get some of those on iplayer if you are interested enough. Many people hate him, I love him myself. Hth

JessicaBeatriceFletcher Wed 07-Aug-13 09:24:11

He's been on BBC Radio 4 and doing the touring circuit (theatres) for years and has developed a cult following - but he tends to be Marmite. People either find him incredibly funny or don't get it at all. I'm in the former camp and there are episodes of his radio show that had me literally crying in laughter and I once had to pull the car over to finish listening to it because I was laughing so much.

The character has changed slightly for the TV - his radio show featured several recurring characters who aren't involved in the TV version - and some of the things that worked so well on radio just wouldn't on TV.

But there is a spot of Harry Worth about him.

GameSetAndMatch Wed 07-Aug-13 11:20:10

i only saw the 1 prog last night so just dont get it really. but because DC liked it i may persevere.

thanks for explaining!

I loved it on Radio but things sometimes Do NOT transfer well when you can see them

Bunbaker Wed 07-Aug-13 18:13:54

I haven't seen last night's episode and didn't listen to it on radio, but I find it really funny in places. The one with him sitting for the artists had us in stitches.

TiggyD Wed 07-Aug-13 22:24:27

He was also a recurring character in "The Remains Of Hamish And Mcoll" on radio. I'm a big fan. I know it's a marmite thing. I like the move to TV. It's now co-written with the legendary Graham Linehan who wrote Father Ted, Black Books, IT Crowd and the Direct Line ads with Al Armstrong.
There is less Count Arthur in it now. He was a bit hard to listen to when it was just him on the radio. Rory Kinnear has joined him with a truely great comic performance up there with David Jason, Ronnie Barker and Harry H Corbett. Brilliant.
Give it a go on I player, but you should really watch them in order as there is an ongoing storyline.

I love it. Very subtle and gentle, very Graham Linehan. smile

Yes, DW adored it on the radio and on stage, I quite liked it but wasn't bowled over.

I much prefer the TV series, there's a lot more depth and a twinge of sadness to go with the broader slapstick comedy, I also think Arthur's a bit more sympathetic (or at least more worthy of pity) than in his radio incarnation.

I think it is brilliant.

JessicaBeatriceFletcher Thu 08-Aug-13 09:05:44

Compos - yes, they have softened him slightly. In the radio show, he was insufferable (in the right way for radio comedy) whereas in the TV show he is more likeable. The bit at the end of the first episode was really very touching and unexpected (and totally unlike the radio Arthur).

So far for me the second episode was surrealistic heaven. Jack the Ripper tours from an ice cream van. Had me in fits.

Davros Thu 08-Aug-13 10:07:23

I think the second episode is the best too. They have added some touching moments which works well on TV. I also think that changing the set of other characters has worked well as I would forever be disappointed in who they chose to play Wilf ior Sally (who is Sue Perkins in my mind) etc. I was amazed at Malcolm when I saw him on the live shows, in my mind he was a tall skinny bloke but I did get used to him. I love the Michael character.

Nancy66 Thu 08-Aug-13 15:57:31

I'm really liking it - never heard it on the radio though.

ComposHat Thu 08-Aug-13 16:23:33

Just watched last night's episode.

Aw poor Arthur!

dowagerdorris Thu 08-Aug-13 16:41:31

Completely and utterly awful IMO.

TiggyD Thu 08-Aug-13 19:22:39

NobodyPutsTomArcherInTheCorner Thu 08-Aug-13 19:30:31

I LOVED him on radio and I LOVE him just as much on tv. I think it transfers to tv very well.

Best thing on tv atm by miles.

out2lunch Fri 09-Aug-13 20:51:04

brilliant

Furball Fri 09-Aug-13 22:31:13

I love it too.

YY about the ice cream van

and also literally fell off the sofa laughing at the slice of ham phantom of the opera mask and also the black bin bag sound of music outfit.

Furball Fri 09-Aug-13 22:31:33

and when he couldn't pronounce les miserables grin

ComposHat Sat 10-Aug-13 02:07:54

His Jack the Ripper tour when he got him mixed up with Robin Hood:

'He robbed from the rich and slaughtered the prostitutes'

GameSetAndMatch Sat 10-Aug-13 18:56:10

okay ill give it another go. may get into it. DC likes it anyway.

I have just cried laughing at that last episode. I must try and get hold of the radio stuff.

Panzee Sat 10-Aug-13 20:43:13

I cannot stand it on the radio which is odd because I love all of Linehans other stuff. I've not bothered with e TV version.

Bea Sun 11-Aug-13 23:39:02

found him hard to like on radio... but dc's have found it hilarious... and hus me too! Loved the one in the Back room during the riot and "Doctor Two!"... best line???

"It's out of my expertise... I'm AFRAID!" brilliant! grin

JessicaBeatriceFletcher Mon 12-Aug-13 10:31:42

Panzee - Linehan had nothing to do with the radio series, only the new TV incarnation

Panzee Mon 12-Aug-13 17:24:35

Oh that is interesting! Might be worth a go seeing as some of you have said its better, thanks smile

JessicaBeatriceFletcher Tue 13-Aug-13 20:30:37

Wow. Just watched tonight. The last couple of minutes of that was one of the most touching things I've ever seen in a sitcom.

Nancy66 Wed 14-Aug-13 09:47:44

Lovely episode last night. really enjoyed the series.

TeaandCake Wed 14-Aug-13 10:25:19

Not watched the TV version but HATED the R4 show.
The only radio prog which had me running to the radio to switch it off (and I usually listen to anything).

Just not funny.

Oh gawd, is it going to make me cry again? sad

Nancy66 Wed 14-Aug-13 15:14:41

I think it might....

GameSetAndMatch Wed 14-Aug-13 17:34:55

nope.sorry, tried to like it ,really tried. maybe tried too hard. its one of those things id love to love but noooooo.

Ablababla Wed 14-Aug-13 17:39:19

Hated this on the radio. It's just not funny and had me running to turn it off!

Ah yeah...it did.

JessicaBeatriceFletcher Wed 14-Aug-13 21:37:16

Beer - wasn't it a fabulous ending? And she DID send him a message after all, he just never saw it on the blackboard - but we saw it. And the book title and dedication. Setting myself off again!!!

Furball Thu 15-Aug-13 07:20:32

I didn't get the blackboard message? and I've just looked again and still don't get it. blush

When he stands in front of the blackboard, the words that are still visible on the right are Katya's message to him <sniff>

Nancy66 Thu 15-Aug-13 10:14:05

The words appear to be a load of gibberish but at the very end you can make something out...very clever and a bit of a choker.

Davros Thu 15-Aug-13 11:10:35

What is it??!! Tell us, I missed it. I'll have a look at the recording but might miss it again

PMed it you, Davros smile

Nancy66 Thu 15-Aug-13 11:25:42

Arthur is standing in front of the blackboard so that his body blocks a lot of the words on there. But the ones you can see spell out: 'Goodbye Arthur.'

Davros Thu 15-Aug-13 11:28:57

Beertrickspotter, thanks for the PM. I can't seem to reply for some reason. Maybe I haven't renewed my MN membership but they never remind me, I'm quite willing! I'm going to have another look, genius!

NicholasTeakozy Thu 15-Aug-13 11:51:45

It's the funniest British sitcom for years, I love almost everything about it, especially his malapropisms. The problem I have is I laugh so much I miss half the show.

The last episode was just wonderful, the scene with the pizza had me spluttering. "I'll just liquid eyebrows a pizza... For Katya" grin

Furball Thu 15-Aug-13 13:35:08

Thanks for telling about the blackboard, I watched it back and still didn't see it. <<huffs on glasses and gives them a clean>>

Davros Thu 15-Aug-13 17:14:30

It's interesting that they don't have a pub in the TV show. He is clearly at least half pissed for much if the radio show. I wonder if he's missing The Shoulder?

TiggyD Thu 15-Aug-13 22:27:40

The blackboard reads down the right.

Good
By
Arthur

harrietspy Thu 15-Aug-13 22:33:36

I haven't read the whole thread because I'm waiting to watch the most recent episode with my dc when they come back from staying with their gran and don't want to spoil it. I loved it on Radio 4 as did my ds1 who kept hunting for it on iPlayer. Ds2 is younger and prefers the telly version. I love both.

Bea, they've been quoting, 'It's outside my area of expertise... I'M AFRAID', for the last 10 days. I loved Doctor Two. And 'A salmon in the toilet'.

I read an interview with the lovely Rory Kinnear who said that he chose it partly because it's like the comedy of his youth and is the sort of thing his dad was in. I like him even more now.

harrietspy Sun 18-Aug-13 19:09:48

Last episode was heartbreaking!

Bea Mon 19-Aug-13 16:03:30

caught up with last episode today! Choked! the dedication, the message!
Brilliant!
AIBU to love Rory Kinnear... just a little bit?smile
Kids absolutely hooted through them all... they had an Arthur strong marathon watching session this morning... all 6 eps on I player! (just come back from hols!)

harrietspy Mon 19-Aug-13 17:38:08

No; Bea, you're not. If you like Rory Kinnear you must catch up with Southcliffe. Couldn't be more different from CAS but I'd watch RK do anything...

Bea Mon 19-Aug-13 19:24:44

Ahh! harrietspy... \I know but don't think I could watch southcliffe... looks far too traumatic! Not even for lovely Rory...!
