Firstly - don't you just love it? I can watch it again and again and it always makes me laugh. Earlier we had Bryn saying "Fee Fi Fo Fum" and then "Joking, I am - I'm not really a giant".

Secondly - why is Owain Hughes funny?

Thirdly - Ness was nearly in All Saints, drove trucks for Eddie Stobart, worked in Bollywood and nannied for Richard and Judy. What else?

Kasterborous Thu 01-Aug-13 23:55:15

Ow Hassled what's occurring.

Firstly yes I love it too

Secondly, haven't got a clue!

Thirdly, can't think of any off the top of my head but there are loads

MrsDonaldDraper Fri 02-Aug-13 00:00:23

I was watching this evening. i love Dawn's vows - 'Pete, most people would turn you away' grin

Didn't Ness date John Prescott and there was also something to do with Noel from Hearsay.. Ooh - and she 's doing the stock market in one episode...

lj123 Fri 02-Aug-13 01:01:02

Love it! Dawns response to the ring!!!! Cracks me up every time and I'm sure I have seen that episode at least 6 times lol!

RedHelenB Fri 02-Aug-13 08:28:17

Was goal keeping coach for Coventry city i think - Stacy buys her goal keeping gloves in the Christmas special.

SavoyCabbage Fri 02-Aug-13 08:31:48

Ness worked with Kate Adie. Selfish.

nursingdreams Fri 02-Aug-13 08:32:36

I thought the joke was Owain Hughes sounds like do you "owe Wayne Hughes" hence he says before you ask no I don't. grin

SavoyCabbage Fri 02-Aug-13 08:38:29

Didn't she also work at 'second hand city'?

It's brilliant , over and over again but never boring.

I love Pam, my favourite character!

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 02-Aug-13 08:45:32

Nessa had a thing with Tom Jones and Russell Brand.

MiaWallace Fri 02-Aug-13 08:48:04

and Dodi Al-Fayed

Groovee Fri 02-Aug-13 08:53:21

She worked for BBC as she talks about Kate Adie when Mick is on the news for 3 seconds.

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 08:56:57

I love it, have been watching it every night for the last week or so.

I don't think Owain Hughes is a joke really, it's a bit like the fishing trip grin

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 08:59:21

Bryn a great character,and I love Doris.

Trazzletoes Fri 02-Aug-13 09:01:05

I've tried to watch it. Really, I have. I just don't get why it's so so so funny sad. Maybe it's because I'm from Billericay.

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 09:04:42

Needs shared a house with Noel from Hearsay.

zgaze Fri 02-Aug-13 09:04:55

I really love the scene where the real John Prescott actually turns up at Nessa's wedding, you suddenly realise that all her stories are true grin

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 09:05:12

Quaffle Fri 02-Aug-13 09:05:36

Nessa also had a fling with Dodi Fayad didn't she?

trikken Fri 02-Aug-13 09:30:30

I love it too. Nessa and Smithy are my favourites. I didnt see it when it was on tv but got all the episodes cheap in CEX and I think its one of my best buys. Dh loves it too.

TheRealFellatio Fri 02-Aug-13 09:33:28

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Gavin and Stacey - it's totally genius.

Uncle Bryn is adorable. In fact there's not a character in it who's not fab in their own way.

Quaffle - also John Prescott, Nigel Havers and all of Goldie Lookin' Chain. grin

crumpet Fri 02-Aug-13 09:36:47

Ddn't Ness turn down Nigel Havers too?

Hassled Fri 02-Aug-13 09:41:37

Ahh - do you owe Wayne Hughes? I see. Except - is Wayne Hughes someone famous?

Tidy to see so many fellow fans - it's my comfort telly at the moment. There really does seem to be no limit to how many times I can watch the same episode.

I'd forgotten about Dodi Fayed and Nigel Havers. She also lived with Goldie Looking Chain for a while, didn't she? And apart from being a bowling pro, wasn't she also some Martial Arts expert?

What did happen on that fishing trip grin

TheRealFellatio Fri 02-Aug-13 09:46:30

I love the bit where she's in the bath and she calls Stacey in, hands her a razor and says 'can you do my back?' grin

And Pammy. 'on my Christ!' grin I just love everything about it.

TheRealFellatio Fri 02-Aug-13 09:46:43

oh, not on hmm

Hassled Fri 02-Aug-13 09:47:53

Whatever happened on that fishing trip, it was legal in most countries.

trikken Fri 02-Aug-13 09:50:37

Pamelaaaar is brilliant.

Portofino Fri 02-Aug-13 09:51:49

I want to be adopted by Pam and Mick.

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 09:56:26

Every character is perfectly cast.

I think. It's one of my favourite programmes ever.

I love the surprise party for Gwen episode.Bryn is genius in it.

trikken Fri 02-Aug-13 09:58:52

We dont know what happened on the fishing trip, other than it was unnatural between uncle and nephew, it was cold and soup was involved.

My boona

Hassled Fri 02-Aug-13 10:00:12

I'd forgotten all about "selfish" Kate Adie grin grin

I love it. Nessa and Stacey also spent a great night with Russell Brand but didn't end up in his book. She also used to turn tricks in Amsterdam with marsbars.

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 10:00:44

Big fat sue.

trikken Fri 02-Aug-13 10:01:22

And illegal in several countries.

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 10:02:16

It was physically impossible too.

Flyingfruit Fri 02-Aug-13 10:08:41

Think 'Wayne Hughes' is just a popular welsh name.
Fat no more pat!

Thehoardernextdoor Fri 02-Aug-13 10:08:58

Nessa also woke up next to a couple of Gladys Knights' Pips

TheRealFellatio Fri 02-Aug-13 10:10:11

Ha! Yes usual I love all the funny names of the peripheral characters. Big Fat Sue, Chinese Alan, Dave Coaches, Japanese Margaret.

Aaah. <happy sigh>

wintera Fri 02-Aug-13 10:10:12

I was thinking about G and S the other day when my sister was talking about someone she knows called 'fat Tracey'. Made me think of Pamlaar and her mate big fat Sue.

SavoyCabbage Fri 02-Aug-13 11:18:20

Dave Coach was his real name. David Lloyd coach.

I loved it when Chinese Alan came in in his stag night tshirt. "Anyone fancy a Chinese"

And Pete! Peter Sutcliffe on his cap.

Groovee Fri 02-Aug-13 11:29:13

Such talent from James Cordon and Ruth Jones.

Always wondered. Did Gav and Stacey have a girl or a boy?

Smithy and the toilet brush! The double meanings of the KFC....

Ah yes, the toilet brush grin

Don't mention the toilet brush! grin

Ellenora5 Fri 02-Aug-13 12:41:10

I have a cigar at Christmas and a pipe at Easter, always has always will

Hassled Fri 02-Aug-13 12:54:03

Yes, the combination of the Wests, the Shipmans and the Sutcliffes grin

I like Deano and his half and half tea and coffee. I especially like how he specified tea first in the mug - I really must try it one day.

WireCat Fri 02-Aug-13 13:57:49

It's brilliant!

I love watching them & watch them all over & over.

I loves it I do. I can't think of a favourite moment, because it's all great, but dh and I crack up at, 'Midgeure cheddar.'

I have a friend who drinks 'half and half'.

If you like G & S have you seen Stella? Written by and starring Ruth Jones. Same seemingly gentle, masking a layer of madness, humour and loads of English/Talk Tidy.

Winterwardrobetime Fri 02-Aug-13 14:04:47

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

Quaffle Fri 02-Aug-13 14:20:57

Rather like The Royle Family (when it was still good, before it degenerated into bad sitcom) the best bits of G&S are when they're just being "dull".

EG - when Pete is admiring Mick's oven gloves, or when they're discussing how to cook the turkey this year. Oh and when they're trying to work out who sent the Xmas card and it turned out to be Dawn's stepbrother.

driftwoodsands Fri 02-Aug-13 14:21:40

I love it when Nessa snogs Mick goodbye and Pammy looks all offended when she's off to meet up with the Stobart boys... and Gavla has to hoist her up into the driving seat!
Also love it when Smithy comes back in from the garden with muddy knees! Absolute genius.

Quaffle Fri 02-Aug-13 14:25:50

There's an outtake on the DVD - the first time Nessa drove off in that truck she took out the wing mirror of a parked car on the other side of the road grin

Ninehoursahead Fri 02-Aug-13 14:27:44

I thought Owain Hughes was a Welsh language thing? confused

Love "Neil, the baby" or "The baby, Neil"

And Doris with her innuendo with Gavin!

encyclogirl Fri 02-Aug-13 14:34:40

Nessa: How's it going, alright?
Smithy: OK, I'm glad you brought it up, cos I've got a girlfriend who a lot of people here know, so I'd appreciate it...
Nessa: Where to she now, then?
Smithy: What?
Nessa: Where to she now?
Smithy: Right, either speak English or learn Welsh, cos that, "where to she"... do you you mean where is she now?
Nessa: Yeah.
Smithy: Say that, then.
Nessa: Where is she now?
Smithy: Sixth-Formers netball tournament in Southend. She couldn't get out of it, she's wing attack.

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 14:37:30

Love it!

Nessa drives huge lorry but in an earlier episode she said she couldn't drive.

Anyone watch The Cafe? Similar humour on a more gentle level, I'm addicted!

Isn't the Owain Hughes thing because "Hughes" means to plough or farm the land in Welsh, so it means something like "Owain, who farms/ploughs" and that's why they're always asking "and do you?"

Disclaimer- I'm not welsh nor do I speak the language, I just know what Hughes means in English. grin

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 14:39:45

Oh and I have a crush on Mickblush

Groovee Fri 02-Aug-13 14:58:52

Its when poor Deano speaks welsh to Gwen.

And when they have to listen to Gavin and Stacey shagging while they're having breakfast.

Pam with her "vegetarianism"

What happened on that camping trip?!

I love the fact that they didn't go down the usual route of Nessa and Smithy getting together.

I loved Smithy.

trikken Fri 02-Aug-13 15:02:17

Mick asks Nessa if she drives not can she drive. It was in one of the interviews/commentaries.

Valium I watch The Cafe. I love the fella who played Johnny in Two Pints.

muminthecity Fri 02-Aug-13 15:09:49

I love G&S, pure and utter genius. The Christmas special was one of my favourite episodes, the other being the one where Bryn arranges a surprise party for Gwen. I love it when he maniacally screams "SURPRISE! SURPRISE! SURPRISE!" in Gwen's face when she walks in grin. And his attempt at an American accent - "We're having a barrrrrn darrrrnce."

Also love Bryn singing Something Inside So Strong at Neil the baby's christening.

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 02-Aug-13 15:36:04

I love that one where G&S are shagging at breakfast time & Pam sings along to the radio.

And when they find out Smithys name

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 15:39:31

What IS smithy's name???

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 15:40:19

Ah good,another The Cafe fansmile

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 15:40:30

Speak of the devilwink

WireCat Fri 02-Aug-13 15:42:34

Smiths name is Neil iirc.

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 15:44:27

Oh yes, of choose,I did know that. That's why they name the baby Neilsmile

Hassled Fri 02-Aug-13 15:44:50

Smithy is Neil, as is Nessa's Dad. Hence Neil, the baby. And yes DOris is another great character - I love her telling Gwen that she's twatted, if truth be told.

I must check out The Cafe, and Stella.

valiumredhead Fri 02-Aug-13 15:50:40

Oh God yes, Doris speaking obscenely to Gavingrin

JillJ72 Fri 02-Aug-13 17:18:38

There's this thing, see, it's called a computer. And on the computer there's this BRILLIANT thing, it's called the Internet. And then you can find a route map. Now, we're in Barry, and you want to go to Billericay...... You see that "www"....

Yes, World Wide Web.

Oh, that's brilliant that is. World Wide Web. What a great way of remembering it.

The showers. The extra-long hugs that Bryn gives Gavin. The randy next door neighbour who keeps giving Gavin the eye. Nessa and Smithy who just can't help but end up getting it on together.

I do like Mick (Larry Lamb), love the way he and Pamelaaaar are v touchy feely giggly.

Absolutely inspired writing, acting. And that odd moment of tears (Stacey's Dad's letter). Love love love.

usualsuspect Fri 02-Aug-13 17:42:24

Yy, DS loves it too,we were chatting about it and he said exactly that, the odd moment brings a lump to your throat.

I love Stella as well.

I watched Love & Marriage and it had Gavs mum and dad in it.

I luffs Gavin and Stacey I do. I came to the party late, waaayyyy after it finished and ended up watching the whole 3 series back to back while in hospital with DS.

I love Smithy and his sister Ruth and when Gavin, Smithy and Pam start singing and rapping. grin

Excellent show.

RedHelenB Fri 02-Aug-13 19:13:55

But did you watch it on You Tube T?

HighBrows Fri 02-Aug-13 22:36:56

Gavin and Stacey is brilliant, I won't lie to you, I loves it I do!

Nessa was also a drug smuggler and used to swallow condoms full of crack.

I used to love another show with Julia Davies and Ruth Jones in it called Nighty Night. I adored that show it was so so so wrong but so hilariously funny. I'm off to you tube it now!

ShadeofViolet Fri 02-Aug-13 22:41:59

I love the episode where Pete and Dawn renew their vows, when Pete is showing the ring to Pam and she shouts 'oh my Christ'. I can watch it over and over.

Also, when they have the fight in the kitchen when Gavin and Stacey are moving back to Barry and Dawn says to Pam 'I will back you all the way, punch her in the face'. I still cry with laughter.

HighBrows Fri 02-Aug-13 22:42:18
CambridgeBlue Fri 02-Aug-13 22:53:19

The line 'I'm not really a giant' floors me every time! One of the funniest shows ever, I love all the little extra bits like when they all dance to Madness and when the men discuss oven gloves v tea towels. My favourite episodes are the Xmas special and the one where they all go to the beach. I tell my DD that we are going to be like Pam and Mick when she's older and has mates round DH says I am already like Pamelaar.

queenebay Fri 02-Aug-13 23:16:20

Hasn't it been bought by American tv too. Remade but looks good. Can't think of the name though

Us and Them, I think. Will it translate do you reckon?

HighBrows Sat 03-Aug-13 00:03:39

It'll probably be a New York family - hard and trendy vs. a southern family - soft and hick!

I'll watch it but I doubt it will translate. The American Inbetweeners was god awful however the American Office is actually better then the British version.

AmIthatHot Sat 03-Aug-13 00:38:50

highbrows. Check out Gold right now. Nighty Night is on grin

OrangeLily Sat 03-Aug-13 01:08:28

Omg I absolutely love Gavin and Stacey.

The bit where they find Pete's Mum behind the living room bar the next day.

The bit when Smithy won't share his take-away. I also agree with this!

The bit where Pamalaaar pops in to tell them she's putting in her earphones so they can let themselves go in bed.

Stacey showering whilst Nessa has a bath.

Oh and does anyone fancy an omelette?

OrangeLily Sat 03-Aug-13 01:10:13

AND Smithy teaching Pam how to play Shag, Marry, Push off a cliff (or equivalent) and Gav is in the car cringing.

Nessa was also a bouncer but it wasn't a good life for an attractive woman. She doesn't miss the rage or coming home and soaking her knuckles in a bowl of ice.

AlphaBetaOoda Sat 03-Aug-13 09:17:09

Love the unspoken 'how old is Nessa?' thing.

LottieJenkins Sat 03-Aug-13 09:28:59

The lady who played Doris died last year! sad
I love G&S too. I saw Matthew Horne on The Tube a few years ago. He got on at one of the Claphams and sat opposite me hiding behind a copy of The Sun. His eyes are amazing but he has the skinniest legs I have ever seen. He got off at Bank when I did and it was like following a human flamingo!! grin

LizzieVereker Sat 03-Aug-13 09:49:55

Nessa was also a roadie for The Who.

I love the episode where Pam joins in the anti mobile phone mast protest, "tumour brains, Mick!" but spends most of the protest complaining about her rubbish mobile reception.

Is it just me, or does anyone else not like Stacey very much? I find her really selfish and spoilt.

shiningcadence Sat 03-Aug-13 15:53:37

Yay, a G&S thread! I love, love, love it. I lived in Barry when it was being filmed so it is extra special for me in that way - love watching it and seeing familiar places smile

It is probably the funniest thing I've ever seem on tv, proper laugh out loud funny. I also love the Christmas special and the phone mast episode and also the one where they're having a BBQ in the garden and Dick Powell comes round selling sausages and Doris sings There Is A Light That Will Never Go Out by the Smiths. But I honestly love all of them. I watched them all first time round on tv then bought them on DVD and still watch the repeats when they're on tv now. It never gets old.

I agree about Stacey though. She is spoilt and selfish and my least favourite character. My faves are Pam and Mick.

Did anyone watch Fat Friends? Pam, Nessa and Smithy were in that too. It was brilliant and I've got the boxset of that somewhere. Different kind of humour but fab all the same.

I am rofl laughing at the poster stalking flamingo legged Gavin btw grin

I'm not sure if she stills does it but the lady who owns Gwen's house used to invite fans in to look round and have a cuppa... Did you know that Pam and Mick's house isn't actually in Essex but also in South Wales - Cowbridge if I remember rightly, which is down the road from Barry. Apparently the owners of Pam and Mick's house weren't so happy about fans knocking their door and trying to peer into their garden! Can't say I blame them though!

I think the Christmas special is perfect. It feels like the Christmases I have iykwim.

shiningcadence Sat 03-Aug-13 17:36:13

I know what you mean, it has a perfect Christmas feel to it - all the fun and magic and mishaps and hilarity of different family members brought together on that one day, all if them great in their own ways, some fun, some odd...ahhh

carben Sat 03-Aug-13 19:10:23

Love love the episode where Nessa gives birth. I laugh out loud every time Gav and Smitthy fall over on the wet floor in the hospital. All those tender scenes as she hands the baby over - then finding out they both want to call the baby Neil - then Pam saying she always thought Smithy was called Colin. Immense. Also love the episode where Bryn gives Stacey a mock interview as Declan Mcpartlan and Doris telling Gwen she's not making fat girl's salad for the christening because of the 20 grand she owes her which she's repaying at £1 pw !!!! Not to mention Leighton and Howard and Ahmed - 3 of Stacey's five engagements. Lush.

LottieJenkins Sat 03-Aug-13 19:18:56

I'm not a stalker! shock grin He just happened to get off at the same stop as me!! I felt sorry for him as people were staring at him!sad

shiningcadence Sat 03-Aug-13 19:35:43

Haha, sorry LottieJenkins. When you said you were following him I thought you meant you were following him iyswim? I probably assumed you were stalking him because that's what I would've done in the same situation grin

For the sake of my own amusement can I continue to imagine you as a mad Gavin and Stacey fan stalking after the lovely flamingo legged Mathew Horne? grin

Hassled Sat 03-Aug-13 20:58:39

Lottie - I'm very much afraid that in my head you will forever be Flamingo Gav's Stalker now grin

You're right about Stacey - she is very spoilt. But there's still a sweetness about her, the sort of innocence that Bryn and Gwen also have. Apart from that scene in the chemist where she out-stares the girl she hates - that's yet another brilliant moment.

Another one here who can watch again and again. My favourite scene was Bryn driving Gwen home to Barry singing along to James Blunt.Brilliant. grin

valiumredhead Sat 03-Aug-13 21:16:23

Oh yes James bluntgrin

LottieJenkins Sat 03-Aug-13 21:28:00

Love Stacey in the first series but could seriously punch her in series two, especially the bit where Gwen offers her bedroom to Nessa and she throws a pathetic wee strop hmm

Feel sorry for her being homesick though. Must say the one magical thing about this series is how JC and RJ have made it so realistic yet so watchable and funny iyswim?

I always cry at the episode where they've separated and she's at bingo, he's at the foam party and they run out to phone each other...

'We're going to be all right aren't we?'

'Of course we are! Of course we are!'

Thanks for linking that Lottie .Hadn't seen it before.

'I think he's got a cracking voice'. 'From what I can gather it's about 3 men who have a part share of a semi-detached property by the sea.' grin grin

the owain hughes joke is that the sound 'hughes' 'hews' means smells/stinks in welsh.

therefore I'm Owain Hughes (stinks) and before you ask... no i don't!

MumsKnitter Sat 03-Aug-13 23:47:26

I love the bit where Pam is gingerly approaching Pete's mum with a rolled up magazine, once she's been discovered behind the bar... like she's going to swat her like a fly!

"Charles!" "My Camilla!"

wintera Sun 04-Aug-13 07:54:21

Aww love G and S, I always thought little baby Neil was a really gorgeous baby as well. Used to find myself staring at his lovely little face whenever he was on screen.

Pete and Dawn's wedding renewal, and the curry episode were stand outs for me. Also loved the scene in the first series when the vicar shouts at Gavin in the church.

Groovee Sun 04-Aug-13 07:57:58

Its the toilet scene in the Italian Restaurant when everyone but Smithy and Bryn know Nessa is pregnant. And while they are there Pete and Dawn are meeting a man for a 3sum which doesn't work out!

muminthecity Sun 04-Aug-13 14:14:59

I was inspired by this thread to watch the whole of series 2 on DVD last night - I was up until 2am watching it, but it was well worth it!

I'd forgotten all about Gavin and Smithy falling over in the hospital - hilarious!

Also the bit where Pam is trying to get Mick to tidy up before Stacey comes to visit - "Michael, you are being a right sarky bastard today!" Really made me laugh.

I agree that Stacey can be a bit spoilt and irritating, but also think Gav was horrible to her when she was feeling homesick. In fact, I think Gavin and Stacey are the two least likeable characters in the programme!

Alconleigh Sun 04-Aug-13 21:45:40

The out staring in the chemist is genius. "Hang on Gav"

shiningcadence Sun 04-Aug-13 22:42:33

I love that scene in the chemist when they're having their stare out and someone comes along and says to the chemist woman 'Scuse me love, where's your fake tan?' Just a simple line but makes me absolutely piss myself every time!

The scene where they turn up to Pam and Micks and Pam has just got back from shopping yet doesn't want them to know that that's what she has done.

or when she is stuffing her face with meat while pretending to be vegetarian

I think Smithy and Nessa were my favourite. Nessa and her stories grin and how her family sit there like its totally normal what she has done.

OrangeLily Sun 04-Aug-13 23:07:46

When Pam and Gwen are taking about Jason and Pam says she would have loved a gay son for 'fashion advice and emotional support' then Gwen tells her Jason lights up the room to which Pam replies 'like a little Will Young' haha smile

Yes! I absolutely love it!

Bryns a legend grin "I only went in for a Nano!" and "Oh no Pam, I'm not even talcumed!" are regular quotes in our house

The bit when Nessa is in labour and she says "sing to me Bryn" and he sings "There's no combination of words I could put on the back of a postcard" makes me cry with laughter

muminthecity Wed 14-Aug-13 16:50:43

I watched the whole third series last night, it was beautiful! I laughed and cried my way through it. The beach episode is just brilliant, but that bit at the end when Gavin and Stacey are in the kitchen talking about looking into adoption/IVF and she gives him a hug and says "It's ever so sad, isn't it?" Made me sob like a baby!

And Nessa's wedding day when she turns to Gwen and tells her she's been like a mum to her. Sob!

whatkungfuthat Fri 16-Aug-13 12:57:44

" If John Nettles saw me dressed like this you'd have to put a leash on him "

Mrscaindingle Fri 16-Aug-13 17:29:06

I love all the bits everyone else has mentioned and Pamelaaaa is my favourite character but then I could watch Alison Steadman in anything.

I also loved Sheridan Smith as Smithys sister the bit where Gavin and Stacey go round and Smithy and his sister start fighting like a pair of 5 year olds rolling around on the floor and Gavin says ' they're always like this'.

Re Gavin and Stacey being the least favourite characters I saw an interview with Ruth Jones and James Corden and they said they specifically set put to write a sitcom where the most interesting or sympathetic characters were not the best looking ones.

everlong Mon 19-Aug-13 17:01:37

I'm known as Pamela by DH and boys. Apparently I'm the spit of her in my actions. I wish. She's amazing isn't she. I love her.

Gavin and Stacey is my favourite pick me up.

Watched a gazillion times, know script off by heart. Always makes me laugh.
