The New Doctor?

Or just the trailer for the 50th anniversary episode?

Or something else entirely?

I wish it was Henry Cavill

Or the one that plays Alice in 'Luther' - she's fab

Cookiepants Thu 01-Aug-13 18:52:10

Whereabouts are they making the announcement ? Excited now grin

Well, as I can't sleep in the 'orrible 'eat, I'll probably be awake and poised to post about it.

yay!

I heard the announcement for the new Doctor is at 7pm on Sunday - Zoe Ball is presenting a programme on BBc1 and Moffet and the new bod will be on it. Read it on a forum though so would have to search out a credible source.

Found it... They mention the midnight thing too, but seem to think it'll be an announcement about the Sunday Live show. Have a look here

Flobbadobs Thu 01-Aug-13 19:39:56

There's absolutely nothing apart from the date of the anniversary special on the bbc site. However Twitter has got hold of it and run a marathon with supposed leaks...
If they're true it looks like the new Doctor will be known pretty soon.

Suddengeekgirl Thu 01-Aug-13 19:41:13

Waaaaa! It's not on my sky+ app yet! It says its celebrity mastermind! confused

Flobbadobs Thu 01-Aug-13 19:41:27

X posts..

RustyBear Thu 01-Aug-13 19:48:50

Remembering how they did it last time, that seems the most likely thing MrsD

GameSetAndMatch Thu 01-Aug-13 21:15:02

wy make an anoouncment at midnight tho if essentially its a kids/family programme? wouldnt the kids want to know?

bit iffy of them if you ask me.

ill sleep tonight (if i can in this heat) and see tomorrow on news!

im a complete Whovian but not that much to stay up for midnight!

ShadeofViolet Thu 01-Aug-13 21:21:40

Marking my place so when I get up in the morning I can find out what it is! I cant stay up til midnight!

grin

OddBoots Thu 01-Aug-13 23:33:06

I don't want to stay up until midnight but I fear in this heat I will regardless.

Lurleene Thu 01-Aug-13 23:42:31

I've seen a lot of speculation on other sites tonight suggesting that Chris O'Dowd will be the next Doctor.

MissMilliment Thu 01-Aug-13 23:50:23

I think Tilda Swinton should be the next Doctor - she's ace.

Kasterborous Thu 01-Aug-13 23:50:38

I'd too seen that its going to be announced at 7pm on Sunday.

DioneTheDiabolist Thu 01-Aug-13 23:53:24

Sooo excited.

DioneTheDiabolist Thu 01-Aug-13 23:53:38

Shamelessly marking place and much more excited than I should feel at this time of the night. Matt Smith was a bit of a letdown after David Tennant but I persevered and can't wait to find out what's next.

Soooo excited.grin
OMG!

MrsMeg Fri 02-Aug-13 00:01:08

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 02-Aug-13 08:43:25

Dh is adamant it will be Roy Kinnear.
I liked guessing from the clues last time but the game was spoilt by being a vaguely unknown. I wanted Russell Tovey.

Who are guesses at the moment?

Lurleene Fri 02-Aug-13 08:58:22

Apart from Chris O'Dowd, I've heard that Peter Capaldi is a favourite too.

There was a story yesterday that betting had increased on Peter Capaldi. He'd be ace! Not as the sweary character from The Thick of It, but he was superb in The Hour.

x-post!

Suddengeekgirl Fri 02-Aug-13 09:37:16

alpha I just googled Roy Kinnear and got very confused! confused
Dh thinks it'll be Rory Kinnear. smile

I would squee with fan girl excitement of it was Nathan Fillion but I know that is rather unlikely.

I'm not sure about Peter Capaldi. The doctor has a certain warmth and I can't shake Malcolm Tucker from my mind!

MissMilliment Fri 02-Aug-13 09:58:22

Peter Capaldi was in a series of Torchwood - Children of Earth, was it called? Think I've blocked it as it really really upset me! Anyway, he was excellent in that (very warm and morally torn and tortured) and that also gives him a Who-ish connection - though would a big previous role in Torchwood write him off as a possible Doctor??

Hmm, suddenly wishing I had a TV license, just to watch this on Sunday.

Ooh! I'd forgotten about the Capaldi/Torchwood link! He was really good in that.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ml9MWzF2bpQ The 456 requesting 10% of the world's children ... with Peter Capaldi.

aliciaflorrick Fri 02-Aug-13 10:16:30

Hasn't Peter Capaldi already been in Doctor Who? Wasn't he a Roman in the one about Pompei?

Rory Kinnear is already filming something next month (Lucan miniseries for ITV), which is right when the Christmas Special is filmed so chances are it's not him. I'd quite like it though, he's a good actor. Capaldi would be absolutely lush, but he's not only been in Torchwood, but he's already been in Who too (Fires of Pompeii).

RustyBear Fri 02-Aug-13 10:25:12

Yes, he was in The Fires of Pompeii. But Colin Baker was in it as a Panopticon guard before he became the Doctor so it's not a complete no-no.

X posted whilst I doublechecked on IMDb grin

CollieEye Fri 02-Aug-13 10:31:35

Freema Agyaman was in a previous episode before becoming a companion.

Eve Myles was a Welsh housemaid called Gwyneth in the Dickens / Zombie apocalypse episode (Ecclestone series) before being cast in Torchwood as Gwen. Imaginative names for a Welsh girl eh?

Being in Dr Who before doesn't stop someone being a main character.

Karen Gillan was in Fires of Pompeii too.

Freema Agyeman was a minor character in the one with the Daleks in Canary Wharf.

I need to learn to type faster!!!

JakeBullet Fri 02-Aug-13 10:36:41

I would love to see a peter Capaldi in the role, been a fan of his ever since Local Hero back n about 1982. I think he is an amazing actor.

Others I wouldn't mind seeing are:

Michael Sheen (was in Twilight...I know, I know) amazing actor, Welsh too but suspect he is tied to the US. Got a feeling he has a child over there who he remains in lots of contact with so guessing long periods n the UK are out of the question.

Rupert Grint is being speculated on as well....don't know if this is a giggle or if he is truly in the running, funnily enough I think he would do a great job.

All the talk of magic and whodini (!) made me consider "Paul Daniels and the lovely Debbie McGee" grin. - somehow I suspect NOT!

Nathan Fillion <drools>

JakeBullet Fri 02-Aug-13 10:38:18

I really enjoyed Matt Smith in the role, he had a tough act to follow but I think he did well.

IIRC, Freema was retconned as being the cousin of the original character she played, and similar with Eve Myles (Gwen was a distant relative of Gwyneth) Companions are different from the Doctor, things can get handwaved and explained. Colin Baker was a different era, less scrutiny of previous episodes (because of the lack of Youtube and the internet, DVDs or even videos at that time) I think recycling someone as the Doctor would be more problematical now, but obviously that doesn't mean they won't smile

jake He was really good, shame to see him going really. But exciting to get a new doctor. Mixed emotions here! grin

I'm v excited....there is some talk of Chris Addison as a potential too...

lady I think he'd actually be quite good, did you ever see him in Lab Rats?

i will so be watching on sunday. just seen the ad for it.

I do think he would be quite good too....I liked him in TTOI.
I adore Julian Rhind Tutt too....his hair is just right for the Dr!

JakeBullet Fri 02-Aug-13 10:54:50

Shamelessly nicked from Facebook

"my theory - again, Whodini (Houdini) = escape artist/magician.
John Hurt was a magician in Harry Potter..
John Hurt was apparently a former doctor who broke a rule and didn't deserve the title of 'Doctor'.....so when 11 is in his own timeline and speaks to 'Hurt'.....i recogn Hurt empowers the 11th doctor and is able to therefore become the doctor by trapping 11 in his own timeline..
Moffatt is messing with our heads because he has already told us who the doctor is!! 'Introducing John Hurt as the Doctor'.............It makes PERFECT sense!!!!! It has to be John Hurt!?"

Hmmmnn .....????

Oh yes, I'd love it to be Julian Rhind Tutt, I kind of fancy him.. blush

jake I have to say, I am pretty convinced it will be John Hurt, and that would be excellent!

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 10:59:26

I think it's going to be a less well known actor. Peter Capaldi would be brilliant but he's too high profile because of being in The Thick of It, he's too closely connected to Malcolm Tucker.
I know Harry Lloyd was talked of taking over from David Tennant at one stage, he's very young looking though. Would they go for another young one?

JakeBullet Fri 02-Aug-13 11:03:34

Harry Lloyd would be brilliant. But very young though.

encyclogirl Fri 02-Aug-13 11:04:02

Oooh Harry Lloyd would be fantastic! I'd love to see him have a run at it.

JakeBullet Fri 02-Aug-13 11:06:11

He was in The Family of Blood wasn't he? Very good in that as I recall.

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 11:10:31

He was downright scary in the family of blood! He was in Robin Hood too as Will Scarlet I think?
He's way too babyfaced sadly. I think they're going to go the tortured soul with wrinkles route.

ProudNeathGirl Fri 02-Aug-13 11:11:51

According to Daily Telegraph they're announcing it on a live show on BBC at 7pm Sunday.

I can't wait!!!! I need to know now!!!!

Snapespeare Fri 02-Aug-13 11:29:12

i don't want to know at all! I want to find out on xmas day. i do not want to watch the 50th anniversary programme and know who matt Smith is going to regen into.

<fingers in ears> lalalalalalalalalalalalalalaaaaaaaaaa!

NatashaBee Fri 02-Aug-13 11:29:14

John Hurt would be good. I wasn't a big fan of Matt Smith so I'm looking forward to hearing who the new one will be.

encyclogirl Fri 02-Aug-13 11:32:13

Family of Blood? I never saw that, but he was fantastic in Game of Thrones. His death scene was very memorable to say the least.

Mumsnut Fri 02-Aug-13 11:33:36

Peter Dinklage or Helen Mirren.

encyclogirl Fri 02-Aug-13 11:35:03

Oh wait, I do remember Family of Blood. Were they the "Father of mine", "Son of mine" people?

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 11:39:54

Rupert Grint would be a good companion as long as he's stopped the gurning thing he had a phase of doing..
Tom Hiddleston has been very quiet lately, he's usually a big Twitter poster but at the moment nothing at all... Is he hiding something I wonder?? grin

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 11:40:44

Thats him encyclogirl* he was 'son of mine', the public schoolboy.

My problem with Peter Capaldi (who is a great actor) is I do see him as Malcom Tucker.

Malcom Tucker as the Dr
"I don't give a flying fuck about the Daleks they can take their plan for world domination and shove it up their outlet valve..."

ceebeegeebies Fri 02-Aug-13 12:34:07

I don't think I can physically wait until Sunday night!!!

I am thinking that it might be someone no-one expects (as Matt Smith was) but would love Chris O'Dowd to do it - think he would be great.

Although I think Rupert Grint would actually make a good fist of it smile

If Tom Hiddleston became the Doctor there's a large portion of the internet that would die by exploding pants. Did anyone see the reaction he got riling up the masses in Hall H at Comic Con?

confuddledDOTcom Fri 02-Aug-13 13:00:17

It's not going to be someone we know or we'll kind of recognise them.

I think you have to watch The Beast Below to understand who John Hurt is. :

"1. I let the starwhale continue in unendurable agony for 100s more years
2. I kill everyone on this ship.
3. I murder a beautiful innocent creature as painlessly as I can
And then I find a new name because I won't be the Doctor any more"

Southeastdweller Fri 02-Aug-13 13:10:53

I'm thinking they'll again pick someone 25-40 and not that well-known. Harry Lloyd is a good bet, and what about Luke Treadaway, a very good actor - did anyone see him in Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time?

Thurlow Fri 02-Aug-13 13:14:32

I don't think it will be Peter Capaldi, much as I would love it to be him, is that I think he comes with a bit too much baggage. A lot of adults knows him from TTOI - and can you imagine kids saying "I really like him, mum, what else has he been in?" grin

I read somewhere that John Hurt is supposedly the 9th Doctor, a regeneration we didn't see, though I'm a bit confused on that as I thought it was accepted that Paul McGann was a proper Doctor? But I don't think it will be him either.

I wouldn't mind it being Rory Kinnear minor crush despite the fact that he's looking more and more like his father. Even if he is filming something, he's only got to film a short bit for the Christmas special, hasn't he? Like one day's work?

Rupert Grint - hmm, again too much baggage.

Chris O'Dowd would be amazing!

Ben Daniels is being rumoured quite a bit, isn't he? I could see that working.

I think it will be a relative unknown, though. Tennant and Smith were both small names at the time. I just don't see that a lot of the big names rumoured would, at this stage in their career, agree with the hassle and possible type-casting of being the Doctor. Plus, much as I love DW, it's not been brilliant the past season or two and it's not at the peak it was a few years back...

FreedomOfTheTess Fri 02-Aug-13 13:16:22

DH is beyond himself with excitement!

I would squee with excitement if it is Paul Mcgann....I totally love him
Bet it won't be though angry

Dfg15 Fri 02-Aug-13 13:25:15

I wish David Tennant would come back - I loved him as the Doctor. But if it was Rupert Grint, as least the Doctor would get his wish of being ginger!

BalloonSlayer Fri 02-Aug-13 13:26:09

I think people should manage their expectations.

Dr Who is a big thing in the UK but much less so elsewhere.

There is no way a big Hollywood ac-tor like Michael Sheen is going to do this. I would hazard the same for Peter Capaldi and John Hurt tbh. Although I would like any of those three to get it.

I kind of like the idea of Rupert Grint, though again I think it would be a bit of a comedown after HP, and TBH if I was the producers I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole for that reason.

Dr Who is a "it makes you a household name" sort of programme. Not a "lets cast a household name" sort of programme. Some actors, like David Tennant, Chris Eccleston and Peter Davison were reasonably well-known before taking on the role but that is unusual. It's far more likely to be someone few people have heard of.

The storylines have been a bit shiteola recently, so that's another reason why someone with a lot of clout "in the business" might not want to touch it.

I do love love LOVE the idea of a Malcolm Tucker sweary Doctor though. < hugs self with delight >

scaevola Fri 02-Aug-13 13:32:09

DD has just been expounding on the John Hurt option (sourcing it to a relative of a school mate who knows one of the cast).

From what I've read, I got the impression that John Hurt is a missing regeneration between McGann and Eccleston and is the actual one who destroyed everything to end the Time War, which I guess means that Nine, Ten and Eleven are really Ten, Eleven and Twelve and the next regeneration is really the much talked about Thirteen (and possibly last, although I bet they just ignore that - wasn't it just one mention in one story that said Time Lords were restricted to 13 regenerations?)

confuddledDOTcom Fri 02-Aug-13 13:46:16

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic - That's what they're saying, which is why I posted what I did about the starwhale, the last line is the important bit. The thing about 13 regens hasn't ever been properly taken on as far as I can tell, also it was supposed to be enforced by the Time Lords so with no one to enforce it I doubt it'll happen. Besides, whilst Doctor Who is popular there's no way that the BBC will implement a limit! I think that John Hurt isn't counted because he's not "The Doctor", this new one will be the 12th Doctor, not the 12th regen, if that makes sense.

NeverTooManyCats Fri 02-Aug-13 13:48:50

I read something that implied James Frain was in the running. I really hope its him, he would be amazing in the role

edam Fri 02-Aug-13 13:52:24

Ooh, I met Tom Hiddlestone at a showing & drinks thing to launch the BBC Henry V that he was in. He's gorgeous. I had to stop myself drooling!

mrsdinklage Fri 02-Aug-13 14:02:00

mumsnut - I was going to say Peter Dinklage too grin (not that I'm biased -oh no)

Tee2072 Fri 02-Aug-13 14:05:06

It won't be Tom Hiddlestone. Or John Hurt. Or anyone who is a household name.

It will not be a woman.

John Hurt is the 'missing' 9th Doctor, who probably caused the time war.

The regeneration restriction was lifted in a throwaway line in Sarah Jane Adventures.

Gwen being Gwenyth was explained at the end of S4 of New Who. Another throwaway line.

Quenelle Fri 02-Aug-13 14:09:32

What was that bit at the end of the Easter episode about the next Doctor: John Hurt?

I can't remember it properly but at the time it gave me the impression he was the next DW. I obviously got the wrong end of the stick somewhere.

I like the idea of Malcolm Tucker. After watching Masterchef this week, my brother suggests Janet Street Porter. Imagine! grin

Quenelle Fri 02-Aug-13 14:10:35

xposts with Tee. I did get the wrong end of the stick.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath Fri 02-Aug-13 14:14:23

New name to throw into the mix (according to DP) is Paterson Joseph. Make of that what you will confused

OddBoots Fri 02-Aug-13 14:16:54

I'd love it to be Patterson Joseph but he has just started on Law & Order: UK.

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath Fri 02-Aug-13 14:18:12

Damn it...
Ta OddBoots, I shall inform DP immediately grin

BeQuicksieorBeDead Fri 02-Aug-13 14:24:56

mrsdinklage and mumsnut I am right with you there...as long as it doesnt cut down his appearances in GoT! He is brilliant.

OddBoots Fri 02-Aug-13 14:25:21

Radio Times is pushing Ben Daniels (link)

Thurlow Fri 02-Aug-13 14:38:20

NeverTooManyCats - oh my god, James Frain would be heavenly <swoon>

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 14:56:24

Rusty in the nicest possible way I knew it had to be you who'd start this thread! grin

I hadn't seen the excitement yesterday so was gobsmacked to hear the news break around midnight. And I haven't been able to concentrate all day with thinking about it <such a child>

I still think the most genius guess was LadyC (I think?) on the previous thread where she mentioned Zawe Ashton. If we were to get a female doctor she would be bloody perfect.

But let's face it, we're likely to get a bloke. BBC is teasing that it is someone who is working atm (or certainly recently), so that means some of the people we might think are ruled out, really aren't.

I noticed that Tom Ellis had pulled out of a show in the US recently and that pinged my radar. He's welsh, dark, can do brooding, so might be an option.

The odds on Daniel Rigby have shortened massively today. The odds on Matt Smith shortened massively in the 24 hours before he was announced so that might be an indicator this time around as well.

Richard Armitage always struck me as someone who could do an action/ darker doctor, if that's the way they want to take the character.

I would love it to be Chiwetel Ejiofor but accept that also is unlikely. And Ben Wishaw - there simply isn't enough of him on screen!!

I think Andrew Scott could be good too and Damien Molony. If Toby Whithouse was coming in as showrunner that would make a lot of sense.

I think Ben Daniels is this year's Paterson Joseph (as in widely discussed, widely tipped and possibly was seriously considered for the role). I would love that to be a misdirection, though, and he's actually down for the role of the Master or Omega!

Gah! Still going round in circles... confused

EauRouge Fri 02-Aug-13 15:03:54

I kept saying Chiwetl Ejiofor last time and I'm saying it again this time; he would make an ace doctor. I just hope it's not yet another white bloke, let's have someone different this time.

spiderlight Fri 02-Aug-13 15:06:29

I would love it to be Tom Ellis! (Miranda Hart as companion....? grin)

spiderlight Fri 02-Aug-13 15:06:51

Actuaolly, no, I want Miranda Hart to be the Doctor!!

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 15:15:57

Spider it could be him, seriously. He was replaced in Once Upon a Time (I think?) because he could only commit to current filming for the next series and the producers had a longer arc planned out for his character. There aren't that many actors who would turn down a role that was guaranteed work for several years unless they potentially had something else lined up that was even better. Which is what made me wonder. Or maybe he just doesn't want to be in the US that much <shrugs>

But I would love it to be Chiwetel - in emotional scenes he would break my heart, he really would.

Tee2072 Fri 02-Aug-13 15:17:43

Y'all are thinking of people who are too well known. And Chiwetel is doing something or other in the US, I heard.

edam You've met Hiddleston? I am deeply, deeply jealous. He seems like a genuinely lovely person. envy

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 15:28:27

Luke Treadaway looks a bit too babyfaced again, James Frain would be fab, he does dark rather well, problem is I think he's US based now, he certainly has his own family over there.
Ben Wishaw has been mentioned but he's due to start in a west end play at the end of the year. With Rupert Grint.
It's sure to be someone relatively unknown or someone who is getting a second chance at a decent role. Chris Eccleston hadn't been in the public eye much for a while before getting the role had he?
Really not sure. There was a lot of "wtf"ing when Matt Smith was announced, mainly due to his age so I reckon it'll be someone older.

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 15:30:46

I too am very jealous edam. That voice of his would send me into a tailspin if he directed it at me...
He addresses his Twitter followers as 'my dear friends', everytime I see it I think 'aw bless, he's such a sweetie'!

I heard it could possibly be Dominic Cooper, Has done films in the US but not massively Famous. I shall keep my fingers crossed for some eye candy again. No offence to Matt Smith but he was so strange looking I just couldn't watch him on screen blush

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 02-Aug-13 15:31:21

Tom Ellis has been in it already too but small enough part to be Dr?

I would also love Tom Hiddleston or Dominic West

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 15:34:32

Tee I think with every new Doctor there is fantasy casting (like Chiwetel) which is fun to dream about and then more likely candidates.

Who seems to have an increasingly global audience so they may be willing to go for a more well known but still jobbing rather than star actor - someone who isn't necessarily tagged to one role. Capaldi is a brilliant actor but he is so Malcolm Tucker these days I think that rules him out. Tom Ellis and Ben Daniels have a truckload of experience but you wouldn't necessarily consider them only in the context of one role.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Daniel Rigby had it in the bag grin

YoungBritishPissArtist Fri 02-Aug-13 15:36:43

Sophie Okonedo would be fab as the Doctor. She has enormous depth as an actor but can be comic and light as well.

Tee2072 Fri 02-Aug-13 15:38:13

Oh I know, Tee. I just like to dash hopes. grin

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 15:41:09

Flobb, Wishaw again is my fantasy casting grin and again would love Hiddleston but think he's a Hollywood boy these days!

Alpha - it hasn't stopped them before with companions and don't forget that he played.... a doctor wink

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 15:43:59

Young, the only problem with Sophie is that she's Liz 10, she rules, innit! wink

And much though the Who team likes to recycle people it's not normally people who have had such an iconic role. And the thought of the doctor being Liz 10 when he/she was married to Liz 1....!
<mind boggles>

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 15:44:29

I didn't even realise that Daniel Rigby was Eric Morecambe!! I thought he just played that annoying tit in the BT ads... blush
He's catching up to Peter Capaldi as far as betting goes.

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 15:45:17

Bloody hell need to go get the kids
looking forward to more speculation grin

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 15:46:13

Flobb - yy - good acting chops - already got the BAFTA!
<which you would never tell from the BT ads....>

YoungBritishPissArtist Fri 02-Aug-13 15:46:48

teejwood, thanks for the heads-up, I admittedly haven't watched DW in 20 years! blush

I'll bow out and leave it to you knowledgeable peeps...

RustyBear Fri 02-Aug-13 15:48:40

Stephen Moffatt said on the commentary to The Wedding of River Song that when they were looking to replace David Tennant, the first criterion they had was that they were looking for someone older. Apparently he said 'It's not going to be a 27-year old' Then they saw Matt Smith. Well, said SM on the commentary, it wasn't a 27-year old -he was 26!

RustyBear Fri 02-Aug-13 15:52:14

So if it was Tom Ellis, what would happen if there was a Martha reunion - could be a little embarrassing if the Doctor suddenly looks like her ex-fiancé....

EauRouge Fri 02-Aug-13 15:55:28

I wonder if they will go for someone older when all the new incarnations have been fairly young- I've heard Alex Jennings mentioned a couple of times as a possibility.

Thurlow Fri 02-Aug-13 16:00:18

Who's Damien Moloney? He's on The Indie's list of front runners, I've never heard of him but quite honestly I wouldn't complain grin

Southeastdweller Fri 02-Aug-13 16:04:14

Dear God, not Tom Ellis. So bland and always the same in everything. I'd prefer his missus (Tamzin Outhwaite) to him.

Daniel Rigby a great suggestion - not famours, known to the BBC, and with ace comedic timing.

Chiwetel Ejiofor is too hot in America now - his new film with Michael Fassbender is tipped to get him his first Oscar nomination.

So DT was 7 years younger than CE, and MS 7 years younger than DT on their debuts - looks like it'll be a 20-year-old! grin

Southeastdweller Fri 02-Aug-13 16:09:21

What about David Harewood? He's always banging on about there being not enough work here for him and he's not in Homeland anymore, though I think he's done an American TV pilot and waiting for it to be picked up.

Damien Malony was Lord Hal in Being Human and would be a fine doctor.

Alonglongway Fri 02-Aug-13 16:16:54

we are going to the BBC show at Elstree on Sunday evening which DD1 reckons is the announcement show. Well, I say we're going - we have tickets and she is willing to show up VERY early to queue

ProphetOfDoom Fri 02-Aug-13 16:51:41

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:11:36

Along - it IS the announcement show - well done for having tickets!!!
<jealous>

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:14:47

Young - please come back to the thread!!! My post sounds way more brusque than was meant - in fact I was laughing at the thought that the WHO team probably would think it bloody hilarious to put Sophie in the role due to the sheer fact that it would make the brains of numerous Whovians explode grin
Same with Tom Ellis, actually - because it could be read that Martha worked with the Doctor to save the Doctor from the Master and then when she had saved the Doctor from the Master she left the Doctor for the Doctor grin

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:16:52

But then this is the show where a Doctor in RL is married to his own daughter, who is also the RL daughter of a Doctor. Gotta love it.

Tee2072 Fri 02-Aug-13 17:21:55

Except, they never explained why she left her fiance the doctor to marry Mickey of all people!

So maybe it was because her fiance the doctor was actually The Doctor?

RustyBear Fri 02-Aug-13 17:25:31

This thread is on Discussions of the Day! My first one in 7 years on MN! grin

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:32:40

Congratulations, Rusty! Have a wine

Incidentally, given the -7 years model of forecasting the next doctor that gives us another reading on the cradle we saw in AGMGTW - rather than being the cradle used by children of River & the Doctor or something like that, it was the cradle the Doctor was in during his 14th incarnation wink

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:33:15

that should have read "your -7 years model"...

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:35:31

and that should have read 15th incarnation
<maths fail>
blush

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:45:15

Tee I like your thinking re Martha and the doctor Doctor grin

thanks to Rusty!

I have a feeling whatever people are speculating now, Moffet is going to spring someone on us that we're never going to guess. I'm just hoping it'll be a nice surprise, although I don't think there's been a Doctor that I've actively disliked after watching a few episodes (and I've been watching since Pertwee) I warmed to Matt Smith really quickly and I was very dubious about him, although that was mainly due to my overwhelming love for DT!

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:50:56

Odds still shortening on Andrew Scott.
Daniel Rigby now at evens with some bookies.
Ye gods I don't even gamble confused

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 17:59:14

MrsD - the thing is we know that Moffat lies about everything. But he knows we know that, so we can't rule out the possibility that he is double-bluffing us on all sorts of things confused

Sunnymeg Fri 02-Aug-13 18:10:11

Richard Doyle was mentioned as a likely Dr on Digital Spy a few weeks back. Is he a possibility??

MavisGrind Fri 02-Aug-13 18:22:46

Loving the speculation on this thread!

Can I just gloat throw in here that this weekend I'm seeing John Sim on stage and later in the year seeing, in the space of 48 hours, David Tennant and Ben Wishaw (oh and Rupert Grint but I've never been a HP fan). grin

People in RL are getting bored of me going on about it so I'm going to bore you lot instead grin

Sunnymeg Fri 02-Aug-13 18:29:55

Richard Coyle, I meant Richard Coyle!!

Tee2072 Fri 02-Aug-13 18:40:43

I was wondering, Sunny!

OddBoots Fri 02-Aug-13 18:46:41

Oh MavisGrind, very nice! smile I took ds to Curious Incident yesterday so saw Luke Treadaway - he's not quite as well known though. smile

AlphaBetaOoda Fri 02-Aug-13 18:54:19

envy Mavis

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 19:03:10

Oh Mavis was thinking about Mojo myself. Enjoy The Hothouse!

Sunny, Richard Coyle gets bandied about because he worked with the Moff on Coupling. I think he's a good actor and he can do dark as well as dippy, but not sure about him having the marketability for the role in this day and age iykwim.

Do we think there's anything in the fact they are doing this programme on Sunday as a simulcast on BBC America? As in, it's someone American audiences will recognise? Or do we think it's just to try and maintain the US hype from Comic Con and justify an actor or actress that American audiences wouldn't necessarily recognise?

Also - this is funny grin

MavisGrind Fri 02-Aug-13 19:08:36

grin teej at the link!

Will enjoy The Hothouse - last night of the run so should be good. Ridiculously excited by Richard II with the divine DT and now Le Wishaw as well.

I might expire at the end of it all!

Snapespeare Fri 02-Aug-13 19:08:38

i am popping in some general DW stuff now...

...if clara is fractured across all time to save the doctor...& she knows that river is his wife, there is nothing to stop her intervening in the library, sitting in the bad chair and connecting the wires that blew up river... so isnt uploaded to the library computer & lives! yay!

ceebeegeebies Fri 02-Aug-13 19:18:06

Clearly whoever it is needs to.have chemistry with Clara so that must be factored in.

I had never realised that the BT bloke was Eric Morecambe.,he was SO good in that. He would be good.

If it was Tom Ellis, would that be the end of Miranda or could he do both?

GameSetAndMatch Fri 02-Aug-13 19:43:53

the ones that came to my mind were:

Lee Mead -dont know why.

Alexander Siddig - yes a star trek actor but its been a long time and would appeal to kids?

or one of the Horrible History guys. theyd ALL be perfect.

YY to the HH cast!!! Great for time travel ... grin

NigellasGuest Fri 02-Aug-13 20:14:14

Please let it be Sue Perkins, please please please!!!! it won't be

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 20:18:00

Alexander Siddig is an interesting one. He's done a few DW audio plays..

Flobbadobs Fri 02-Aug-13 20:19:37

Oh hang on, he's in the new Sky one series Atlantis.

Thurlow Fri 02-Aug-13 20:22:10

I remember Richard Coyle being bandied around last time, he would be absolutely amazing. I loved him in that Pratchett adaption a few years ago.

It's going to be the last person we expect. No one hardly knew who Matt Smith was a few years ago, unless they'd watched Party Animals (which was great and I'm now annoyed I can't watch the box set the same way anymore)

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 20:24:10

Apparently the bookies have suspended betting - with the belief that Peter Capaldi really has it. So shows what I know grin

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 20:35:39

And he fits the uber-fandom a la Tennant having written a letter to the Radio Times back in the day

So Radio Times has an article extolling the virtues of Ben Daniels and an article on how Capaldi would just at the chance to be the Doctor.

Mmmm - they are messing with our minds, aren't they? wink

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 20:36:18

would just jump

Bunnygotwhacked Fri 02-Aug-13 21:01:25

Just been watching sherlock and reckon it's going to be Andrew Scott
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0778831/ momentary brain wave going to finish watching it now

Tee2072 Fri 02-Aug-13 21:54:43

My husband heard Capaldi might be the next Master.

ShadeofViolet Fri 02-Aug-13 22:20:17

I would love Capaldi as a baddie, but I just cant see him as the Doctor.

I love him as Malcolm, but I just cant see him switching from someone so hateful to the Doctor.

I want it to be the actor who has been playing Anthony Rivers in The White Queen.

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 22:25:15

Tee that would make a lot of sense. Either him or I could see Ben Daniels being a good Master/ other baddie, too.

The WHO team likes to misdirect, needs to really, in these days of t'interweb, spoilers and social media, so I could imagine that Capaldi and/or Daniels are involved but not as the Doctor.

It's almost like in the run up to the announcement you look at all the red herrings and have to say, no, it's not him!

Bunny, Andrew Scott certainly fits the Moff link in terms of getting the job - he is just such a good baddie, though, it almost seems a shame to have him as the Doctor grin On top of which, he may well yet be in future eps of Sherlock.

I've always thought that if Sherlock could survive the fall at Reichenbach so could Moriarty and the way the TV series played it, he could easily have been faking Sherlock, just as Sherlock faked his own death. In fact, I thought the whole exchange about them being the same seemed to allude to this. And none of the characters alluded to Moriarty's death in the aftermath. IMHO, they've set it up so that Sherlock played out the whole confession to Watson knowing that Moriarty was listening and then took the fall, literally, knowing that Moriarty would believe he had succeeded and therefore he would call off his hounds.

<apologies for off-topic Sherlock diversion>

So that's why I think the Doctor may not be Andrew Scott, as he'll be back in Sherlock <drags thread back on track>
wink

MavisGrind Fri 02-Aug-13 22:35:39

teej - totally agree re Moriarty. When I first saw that episode I spent as much time working out how Moriarty faked his death as I did pondering Sherlock. The premise of the whole story is faking it - either break ins, court cases, human emotions (Sherlock getting Molly to help him in a way as yet revealed), computer codes and suicides.

I hope we haven't seen the last of Moriarty. He was good.

Anyway, <cough> back to the Doctor speculations..!

I would love Idris Elba but it's never gonna happen. Keeping my fingers crossed for Damien Maloney.

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 23:01:15

Shade - Ben Lamb - old Etonian/ex-Oxbridge 24-year old? Not saying you're wrong in any way at all, but the people who thought Matt Smith was too fresh faced would be apoplectic!
And - um - there are rather a lot of Old Etonians around atm, not sure about having one as the Doctor.

Also - having just stalked his twitter account, if it is him, he may have been dropping hints....

teejwood Fri 02-Aug-13 23:04:19

grin Mavis

Peter Capaldi ! Good. I had my money on David Walliams.

edam Sat 03-Aug-13 10:06:10

It's not been announced yet!

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 10:14:29

My husband heard Capaldi might be the next Master.

DD told me this it is beign announced tomorrow at 7 isn't it ?

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 10:14:52

being*

NeverTooManyCats Sat 03-Aug-13 10:21:02

surely it wont be Peter Capaldi though, he was in the DW episode Fires of Pompeii and was Frobisher in the Torchwood Children of Earth series.

pleasepleaseplease James Frain

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 10:23:36

Peter capaldi is to old I think

NeverTooManyCats Sat 03-Aug-13 10:25:03

he's 55

Tee2072 Sat 03-Aug-13 10:32:35

Yes, Sunday at 7.

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 10:38:41

itll be PFFT to the royal birth we will all be sitting at the edge of our seats on sunday grin

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 10:39:18

I wonder if it is somebody quite famous that is why they are doing the announcement on telly

MostlyLovingLurchers Sat 03-Aug-13 10:49:22

My fantasy Doctor would be Mark Gatiss as the Doctor - i know he's been it a couple of times but he was surely born for the role, not that I think it is him.

The chap playing Richard III in The White Queen, Aneurin Barnard, would be fabulous.

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 10:53:13

my friend wants it to be Jonathan Rhys Myers but he would be too pouty and sighy imo

Bunnygotwhacked Sat 03-Aug-13 11:16:32

Oh yes Mostly Rich III guy would be lovely but still reckon it will be Moriarty grin

BigBoPeep Sat 03-Aug-13 11:23:38

ugh no, the RIII chap is like a stilted edward scissorhands!!?

Badgerwife Sat 03-Aug-13 13:00:36

I don't know if it's been mentioned before as I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I would pay money to have Peter Capaldi as Dr Who

Badgerwife Sat 03-Aug-13 13:07:26

ahem, turns out I should have at least read page 2 blush

celticclan Sat 03-Aug-13 13:32:10

I think I need a serious chat with ds1 (8). I said that the new Dr Who may be a woman, he pondered for a moment and then said "Will they have to change the name to Nurse Who?" hmm

SleepyCatOnTheMat Sat 03-Aug-13 13:38:56

Ooh, have just looked at some of the names that are being mooted. Insert blasphemy of your choice here I hope it's not Billie Piper, I don't think I could take her mockney accent again. Also she has been a major character so it would be weird.

Of this list, I'm liking Peter Capaldi, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Daniel Rigby. The guy who plays Moriarty in Sherlock is a good actor but a little too convincing in that sinister role for me to imagine him as Doctor Who.

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 13:44:31

Will they have to change the name to Nurse Who?"

oh dear time for a stern women can be Drs too char with him grin

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 13:45:59

chat* there is an actor I quite like but can never remember his name he was in Spooks a few years ago he would be good and he is very handsome grin

SleepyCatOnTheMat Sat 03-Aug-13 13:51:06

Sorry, have just read a bit of the rest of the thread. Somebody mentioned Tom Ellis out of Miranda...I don't think he'd be right at all and anyway I read an interview with him in which he said he was trying to get film work in LA (and hence may not even do another series of Miranda). He seems very nice but he lacks the naughtiness that the Doctor needs...as I think does Damian Maloney (who played Hal in Being Human. I loved watching him in that but at times struggled to believe he was a bloodthirsty mass murderer).

RustyBear Sat 03-Aug-13 13:51:46

Just checking on this thread - I am currently waiting in a queue at the Doctor Who experience at Cardiff Bay... My birthday treat!

AlphaBetaOoda Sat 03-Aug-13 14:20:11

Like the Hal idea but the BT guy could have potential too,

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 14:27:12

Russel Tovey (is that his name) has been banned about but he has been in it twice once in the titanic episode and when David Tennant left captain jack was chatting him up in the bar

ShadeofViolet Sat 03-Aug-13 14:52:22

I would love it to be Kris Marshall, but he is taking over the main role on Death in Paradise.

IcedCoffeeQueen Sat 03-Aug-13 15:12:33

rusty - please do let me know what its like at the doctor who experience, I want to take ds1 his absolute obsession is doctor who but Scotland to Cardiff is quite a stretch, also if you could let me know if its toddler friendly for ds2 that would be very appreciated!

have fun smile

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 16:15:23

I will be very annoyed if Chiwetel Ejiofor is announced as the new Doctor.

He is way too talented for this.

Bunnygotwhacked Sat 03-Aug-13 17:28:35

Russel Tovey if i am thinking of the right guy was in Sherlock too though so has the Stephen Moffat connection. Wouldn't it be amazing if it turned out to be Benedict Cumberbatch as a complete blindside.

I was trying to think today did Matt Smiths name ever come up among those being touted for the 11th doctor. I don't recall him ever being mentioned and i think perhaps it might go that way again eg anyone we have thought of would be seen by SM as too obvious a choice

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 17:36:57

Wouldn't it be amazing if it turned out to be Benedict Cumberbatch as a complete blindside.

I would cry and have to poke my eyes out with a spoon it cant be him

Russel was also in Being Human maybe his second name isnt tovey

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 17:37:47

It is Tovey just googled

scottishmummy Sat 03-Aug-13 17:39:59

Peter capaldi

Tee2072 Sat 03-Aug-13 17:45:36

No. That would not be amazing, MrsJ. That would be sickening.

I can't stand that man and his non-face. Plus, he I've never seen him be funny. Even a little bit.

Yes, Russell Tovey was in an episode of Sherlock. He has been mentioned as The Doctor previously.

mrsjay Sat 03-Aug-13 17:54:45

Tee you do know I forgot to quote somebody else about benedict non face dont you just need to clarify it so was not my Post grin

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 17:56:26

Benedict is Mr Hollywood now, no fear he'll have any interest in being the next Doctor.

Tee2072 Sat 03-Aug-13 18:05:10

I misread it mrsj! Humble apologies!

Alohomora Sat 03-Aug-13 19:25:16

If we are doing ex-Coupling, has with Moffat before actors I think I'd love Jack Davenport, but that is highly unlikely, he's too Hollywood.

Ditto for my other favourite option, Tom Hollander - he'd be fantastic!

Andrew Scott would be the best option, I think he'd be marvellous and I actually mentioned him to DH as 'on my list' before he became a bookie's fave.

I'm open to anything, really - I have to say, I'm in the minority and didn't care for Tennant's Doctor, but that had little to do with Tennant and a lot with characterisation and storylines.

Everytime they show the trailer for the reveal-show I growl at the TV, effing teases!

Cerisier Sat 03-Aug-13 19:25:59

Noooo we are 7 hours ahead so will have to stay up anyway wait til Monday morning to find out.

KayHarker Sat 03-Aug-13 19:31:09

I'm liking the Daniel Rigby suggestion. But I'm easy. I have trained myself not to pin my hopes on anyone. But I will over t'ruddy moon if Capaldi gets it...

Alohomora Sat 03-Aug-13 19:32:15

Not BC, please, I quite like him but he is EVERYWHERE, I can't stand it anymore!

Now, if Kris Marshall is taking over Death in Paradise, is Ben Miller free to play The Doctor?

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 19:35:03

Kris Marshall is the world's most annoying man, bar none.

As I said before BC will have no interest, none at all, in becoming the Doctor, it would be a major step backwards for him.

Snapespeare Sat 03-Aug-13 19:40:51

I don't want Matt to go, but if he has to... Ben wishaw please.

ShadeofViolet Sat 03-Aug-13 19:52:11

That is true - Ben Miller could play the Doctor.

ShadeofViolet Sat 03-Aug-13 19:53:21

Whats wrong with Kris Marshall (if you ignore the My Family bafooning)?

I loved him in that estate agent show, and I might actually watch DIP now he is in it.

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 19:55:43

Kris Marshall is top of my celebrity hit list, ok he's actually in second place after Giles Coren.

The irritating face, the crappy acting, the BT ads, Love Actually.

I can feel my tension levels soaring just thinking of him!

NigellasGuest Sat 03-Aug-13 19:58:14

ha ha! I agree with you squoosh! you forgot to mention his tour de force - My frickin Family!

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 19:59:20

I tried NigellasGuest but my fingers refused to type those evil words!

mumat39 Sat 03-Aug-13 20:00:38

A bit behind the times here.

Why is Matt Smith leaving?

I just missed the episode, so who is the new doctor?

Thanks thanks

NigellasGuest Sat 03-Aug-13 20:01:44

I must admit, I had a glass of red before typing it.... grin

BigBoPeep Sat 03-Aug-13 20:09:35

I think benedict would be way too obvious, he's pretty much played the matt smith style doctor who ( strange lookin' and quirky behavin') in sherlock already. playing the doctor would be a big yawnfest, and surely he knows that?

I think it'll be a randomer.

Procrastinating Sat 03-Aug-13 20:11:21

Inside Info (or is this general knowledge?): Mark Gatiss was asked to be the new doctor. The fact that he told my dad (my dad knows him) suggests that it is NOT MG.

confuddledDOTcom Sat 03-Aug-13 20:17:54

They couldn't have Mark Gatiss as the Doctor, he'd have made a good one but too late now.

Kris would be a cool Doctor!

I know you're all wrong though wink

23 hours until we find out!

bigbuttons Sat 03-Aug-13 20:35:16

I'm just over the moon I can finally watch DW again after years of Matt Smith who was simply too ugly and annoying to look at or listen to.

LaGuardia Sat 03-Aug-13 20:40:00

Hopefully it will be Adam Levine.

That's a bit shallow bigbuttons! Fair enough if you don't like his acting but ugly? Fancying the actor playing the Doctor is possibly a bonus but it's not requisite.

I love the idea of Tom Hiddleston getting the part but I think it's unlikely. I'd be chuffed with Chris O'Dowd or Peter Capaldi.

fishfingericecream Sat 03-Aug-13 21:21:07

I would love to see Tom Hollander as Doctor Who, (Cutler Beckett in Pirates of the Caribbean).

You have to fancy him it is requisite.

Tee2072 Sat 03-Aug-13 22:03:34

Don't know yet mumat. It's tomorrow at 7.

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 22:05:26

I love Tom Hollander, I'd marry him if he was taller.

RustyBear Sat 03-Aug-13 22:26:29

IcedCoffeeQueen - have PM'd you about the DW experience.

Nursee007 Sat 03-Aug-13 22:37:32

Paterson Joseph....that is all!
Having said that, my dad would make an amazing DW....he is an actor, but has sadly never really been recognised enough.

teejwood Sat 03-Aug-13 22:41:08

When they said the code-name was Houdini I wondered if it was a joke about keeping the new Doctor a secret - and pulling "Who?" rabbit out of a hat at the right time.
Then I wondered if it might be a nod to an actor's previous role, which led me to Colin Morgan.
Much though I think he'd do a good job, he's still too "Merlin" in the eyes of the public - maybe in a few years.
So option 1, then!

MavisGrind Sat 03-Aug-13 22:43:36

squoosh grin that the only thing between you becoming mrs Tom Hollander is his height!
God I would love it if it was Ben Wishaw - not that he's in anyway right for the part but they'd be lovely pictures of him everywhere <really shallow>.

teejwood Sat 03-Aug-13 22:49:11

No to Kris Marshall, please. And no to Chris O'Dowd too, please. I know that is one of the rumours doing the rounds but I'd rather not.

I don't think you need to fancy the Doctor to enjoy the show - as long as the script and plot is good!

teejwood Sat 03-Aug-13 22:49:40

script and plot are good

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 22:49:42

Yes Mavis, that's what I say to the little scamp when he's biting at my ankles begging me to marry him!

teejwood Sat 03-Aug-13 22:53:34

Mavis, beg to differ - Wishaw could be an awesome Doctor but I accept it's not going to happen.

More to the point, how was Simm tonight?! I didn't manage to get to see it before the run finished <gah!>

MavisGrind Sat 03-Aug-13 22:56:16

Oh squoosh he is a one (laughs affectionately and possibly ruffles someone's hair).

Although it isn't a pre requisite, it does fill up some time fancying Doctor Who. Y'know, the moff has to consider this.

teejwood Sat 03-Aug-13 22:56:46

grin at Mrs Hollander. How tall are you, squoosh, would cuban heels or raised soles a la Tom Cruise help t'other Tom get to your preferred level?!

MavisGrind Sat 03-Aug-13 23:02:36

Aww teej you remembered! Simm was brilliant, as was Simon Russell Beale and the rest of the cast. There was a grown up Dudley Dursley in the cast too but I'm not so up on my HP. Apparently he's Patrick Troughtons nephews so the connections continue... grin

squoosh Sat 03-Aug-13 23:06:35

I'm 5'8" tee, and I'm afraid raised soles would Not Be Permitted. The very thought gives me an attack of the vapours. No, I think I'll just have to break it to him gently and redirect my affections in the direction of Ralph Fiennes/Vincent Cassell/Lars Mikkelsen.

teejwood Sat 03-Aug-13 23:16:29

squoosh, am with you on Lars Mikkelsen - can't wait to see him in Sherlock!!

Mavis - oh, of course - Harry Melling! He's Patrick Troughton's grandson, as is Sam Troughton, both of whom have been mooted as Doctor 12. So you might have been watching Doctor 12 tonight! He's the nephew of David Troughton, though, who was in Midnight. There must be a family obligation to be in Who at some point grin

MavisGrind Sat 03-Aug-13 23:22:50

I must admit there are far too many connections between seemingly random events in my viewing choices at the moment. or theatre land is horribly inbred. <can't wait to see Tennant/Wishaw in October > grin

BoreOfWhabylon Sat 03-Aug-13 23:50:26

Peter Capaldi. Dr Who should NOT be a young whippersnapper.

PigOnStilts Sun 04-Aug-13 07:10:13

We want Peter capaldi in a "thick of it" interpretation "get back in that fucking tardis now before I shove it up your arse etc etc"

ceebeegeebies Sun 04-Aug-13 07:21:41

If you go back to when Matt Smith was named as the Doctor, can you imagine that being done as a live reveal ?? it would have been a massive anti-climax as he was not well known at all so i am assuming that means it is a 'big' name to be able to be worthy of a live reveal.

What about Stephen Mangan? i think he would make a great Doctor

Thurlow Sun 04-Aug-13 07:43:55

Matt Smith was a live reveal, same 7pm Sunday night show. And everyone went "who?" Though I think betting on him had quadrupled the day before so people had a vague idea.

Tee2072 Sun 04-Aug-13 07:45:06

No, I bet they are doing the live reveal because of the 50th anniversary. It will never be a big name playing The Doctor.

AlphaBetaOoda Sun 04-Aug-13 08:06:13

It's got to be someone vaguely recognisable though to make it worthwhile , I guess there will be a show about previous drs, reveal, quick interview then bye bye.

Would love to have it like an awards show with all the actors in the audience waiting to be pulled up on stage

ceebeegeebies Sun 04-Aug-13 08:25:47

thurlow my apologies, I don't remember a live reveal show for Matt Smith.

Tee2072 Sun 04-Aug-13 08:46:52

The Matt Smith show wasn't live. At least my husband and I have no memory of it being live!

It was just sort of...announced...

RustyBear Sun 04-Aug-13 09:01:57

It was a special episode of Doctor Who Confidential - don't think it was live, except possibly the announcement itself (can't remember and I was watching!) - MN thread here on January 3rd 2009.

I see from that thread that William Hill closed the betting early saying it was almost certainly Patterson Joseph - while Betfair carried on, making Matt Smith favourite by lunchtime on the day of the announcement. Just checked Betfair and Peter Capaldi is favourite with them too, Daniel Rigby is 2nd fav.

Thurlow Sun 04-Aug-13 09:06:10

Oh, sorry, that's what I meant by live, as in it was a big announcement and no one knew anything beforehand. Cross-wires! I meant that as opposed to it just sort of leaking to the papers.

I'd put a LOT of money on it not actually be a big name. Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear - no one bigger than that.

teejwood Sun 04-Aug-13 09:23:36

Mavis, so many people have been in Doctor Who over the years, it's not even six degrees of separation!

On Betfair the odds are drifting on everyone except Rory Kinnear and Martin Freeman. At this point I have talked myself in and out of so many actors I have no clue anymore...

MavisGrind Sun 04-Aug-13 09:53:38

Teej - tis true. Clive Rowe (morvin van hoff in voyage of the dammed) was in the play last night too, plus Christopher Timothy who, as we know, once played the brother of a time lord and time lords fil! grin

RustyBear Sun 04-Aug-13 09:55:35

Maybe that's why it's live this time - if they recorded it earlier on last time and it leaked, that would explain the sudden surge on Matt Smith, who as far as I remember hadn't been mentioned at all before the day of the programme. Which might indicate another complete outsider....

Thurlow Sun 04-Aug-13 10:02:04

Yeah, I vaguely remember that they had thought the news was leaked. Purely because Matt Smith was such a random choice, there was no way that betting on him would suddenly go up without someone having inside knowledge.

Is it wrong that I am considering juggling DC's bathtime tonight so that I can watch this?!

SoupDragon Sun 04-Aug-13 10:03:21

Peter Capaldi would be a good balanced match for John Hurt I think.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Sun 04-Aug-13 11:18:17

Misha Collins? here

Tee2072 Sun 04-Aug-13 12:20:19

No! Not Misha. No no no no no.

That is all.

grin

Lastofthepodpeople Sun 04-Aug-13 12:42:31

I'm going to go against the grain and say I was a little disappointed in Matt Smith. He's not bad but I didn't think he was great.

Now that the idea of Peter Capeldi is in the frame, I desperately want it to be him. He'd be fantastic!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss Sun 04-Aug-13 12:47:09

Matt Smith was rubbish. He couldn't act his way out of a wet paper bag!

Chiwetel Ejiofor can't be the Doctor, as in my head he is going to be cast as Blake in the Blake's 7 remake.

OliviaP Sun 04-Aug-13 13:03:29

Very funny OliviaP. Truly. I'm dying laughing over here.

Or maybe, JW, they are talking about this John Hart and the BBC has a new process...

AlphaBetaOoda Sun 04-Aug-13 14:26:07

Quite good odds on Damian Maloney who seems like a good option

Wading in with my thoughts grin

It won't be someone really, really well known. Each of the last 3 Doctors have been relatively no -mainstream, so that (for me) rules out the likes of Peter Capaldi, Idris Elba, etc.

Rory Kinnear and Ben Wishaw (as well as Russell Tovey) have publicly ruled themselves out.

Personally, I'd like to see Andrew Scott take the role. He was sublime as Moriarty and Moffatt has previous for casting Doctor's from Sherlock - after all Matt Smith was asked to audition for the role after being turned down for the role of John Watson.

squoosh Sun 04-Aug-13 14:30:05

The BBC can't afford someone really well known, it will be someone relatively well known and someone pretty cheap.

Idris Elba is more likely to aim to be the next Bond than the next Doctor, he's too big of a star for this.

Just reading back through other posts, Benedict Cumberbatch ruled himself out as the Doctor pre-Matt Smith. He said in an interview that e never auditioned for the role but had discussed it with David Tennant (who is a friend). Tennant told him he'd have to be prepared to "be the Doctor" 24/7 for several years, seeing his face on t-shirts and kid's lunch boxes, and he decided he just wasn't prepared to handle that level of intensity.

I'll also eat my hat if Martin Freeman is the new Doctor, he's too big a star now.

Alohomora Sun 04-Aug-13 14:47:42

I was thinking the same thing, I love Idris Elba but he's unlikely to fall into the Who-trap. Would love him as the next Bond.

OddBoots Sun 04-Aug-13 14:52:04

So it is a male, at least according to a BBC article quoting a tweet from his media shots photographer Rankin.

(BBC article)

difficultpickle Sun 04-Aug-13 14:52:40

What is Peter Capaldi doing since In the thick of it finished? I'd say he is top pick or possibly David Harewood.

teejwood Sun 04-Aug-13 15:01:20

bisjo - Capaldi is Cardinal Richelieu in the new Muskateers series, which is why I haven't been taking him too seriously (even though I would love to see his version of the Doctor!) - as surely he is already tied up with that. In fact a lot of the people mooted seem to have projects lined up.

teejwood Sun 04-Aug-13 15:02:29

Ejiofor as Blake? <swoon>
grin

teejwood Sun 04-Aug-13 15:04:55

Thurlow - yes to juggling bathtime; the child needs to understand priorities and the importance of Who in the scheme of life from an early age grin

teejwood, now we just need to persuade whoever's actually in charge of casting the thing (unless it's you, in which case that was easier than I'd anticipated).

Tee2072 Sun 04-Aug-13 15:08:48

I am also considering changing bed time. Bad Tee.

grin

Snapespeare Sun 04-Aug-13 15:25:13

IAmTheTwelfthDoctor Sun 04-Aug-13 16:01:13

Only three hours to go...

Excited!!! Yes I am....bet it's a dog or monkey grin

Daniel Rigby and Andrew Scott odds have improved.,..

Any thoughts if Sam Troughton is a real contender....or too close as his Grandad was the doctor too?

Aneurin Barnard (currently playing Richard in The White Queen) has seen a surge of support according to, cough, the DM.

MavisGrind Sun 04-Aug-13 16:24:11

Sam Troughton might be a good 50th year choice, nice and neat. Not too famous either

IAmTheTwelfthDoctor Sun 04-Aug-13 16:24:23

Sam Troughton is a gimmicky suggestion, I think, Lady.

IAmTheTwelfthDoctor Sun 04-Aug-13 16:25:33

Ha! Cross-post... I think he'd be quite good, but I just think he's only being tipped for it because of who he is.

MavisGrind Sun 04-Aug-13 16:29:35

One woman's neat casting is another ones gimmick wink

Ach, who knows who it's going to be. Whoever it is tiger will be some delighted and some baffled. I don't really care as long as they sort the writing out - the last series was largely terrible.

I did think it was a bit of a cheesy suggestion but the odds are good on Sky at the moment.
Time is slow....Aaaagghhhh!

johnworf Sun 04-Aug-13 16:40:02

Love the idea of the guy who plays Richard III in The White Queen. I can see him as the Dr.

But like others have said previously, I think it'll be someone obscure (to me, a laywoman). I'd never heard of Matt Smith before he was cast.

Tee2072 Sun 04-Aug-13 16:49:54

I would agree with that Mavis. I don't think Moffat has the chops to run the show. Too bad he doesn't agree!

johnworf, I wouldn't call Aneurin Barnard a household name though, I don't recall seeing him in anything before The White Queen.

As I've already said, I highly doubt it will be anyone who has already played a leading role in a popular tv show/film.

AgnesBligg Sun 04-Aug-13 17:02:05

I'd love Richard III for the doctor <swoon/perv>

Has it been announced yet?

MostlyLovingLurchers Sun 04-Aug-13 18:04:26

If Aneurin Barnard isn't going to be the Doctor, since there was some mention of the Blake's 7 remake, how about him as Avon? He reminds me of a young Paul Darrow who played him originally, and could muster the same air of brooding menace. I also have something of a completely inappropriate crush blush.

Programme starts at 7, presume announcement will be at 7.58! grin

PresidentServalan Sun 04-Aug-13 18:14:11

It's being simulcast to USA and Australia - I really hope Moffat doesn't let us down! I can't wait now - less than a hour to go! Patterson Joseph or Peter Capaldi please!!

I don't think it's going to be announced is it Psammead ? - just revealed (in live show ?) on from 7pm ?

I'm quite excited, and trying to enthuse DCs, who don't quite believe me I think.
But am sure we'll all be watching later smile

Oops, programme is only half an hour long, so announcement will be 7.28 grin

PaulSmenis Sun 04-Aug-13 18:31:13

I'm actually really excited blush and I hope the new Doctor will be a woman.

The new Doctor definitely isn't a woman. Earlier today sleb photographer Rankin tweeted to say he'd just photographed the new Doctor for the promo releases and that "he is going to be amazing".

Not sure what kind of doc I'd like to see. We've had quite a few high energy, fast talking, making-it-up-as-they-go cheeky chaps. I'd like to see an older, wiser, more serious doctor, I think. Someone a bit scathing.

Trigglesx Sun 04-Aug-13 18:41:15

unless it's a bluff, so we're shocked if it is a woman grin

although, if I'm honest, I'd prefer it to be a man.

Does anyone know how the last minute betting is going?

Trigglesx Sun 04-Aug-13 18:42:44

they have been a bit.. um... hyper, haven't they? Aren't they keeping Jenna Coleman on for awhile - it would have to be someone that would play off her style well...

AlphaBetaOoda Sun 04-Aug-13 18:42:46

Someone a bit scathing.

Absolutely agree!

lastnightiwenttomanderleyagain Sun 04-Aug-13 18:45:36

Is it wrong that I really hope it's not a woman? Regeneration is one thing, but a gener switch is a whole new idea if you ask me!

Trigglesx Sun 04-Aug-13 18:52:49

that's interesting re the welsh actor from the white queen.... time will tell

A woman would be great, but doubt it will happen.
I heard there are a few black men in the running and think that's a more likely choice.
I feel there may be some kind of surprise - though I guess a new doctor is always slightly surprising anyhow.

PaulSmenis Sun 04-Aug-13 18:56:17

I think a woman Doctor might upset the purists too much.

ooh no no no no Matt, grow your hair back! ewwww!

Tee2072 Sun 04-Aug-13 19:11:44

Suffolk there was a throwaway line in Sarah Jane Adventures that killed the 13 regeneration thing. Also, he's now got River's regens as well.

Yawn. Get. On. With. It. So we can all go 'Who?'.

AlphaBetaOoda Sun 04-Aug-13 19:12:17
