Tonight, 31st July. 8pm, BBC1.

MissSparrow Wed 31-Jul-13 19:55:37

Thank you! Saw this just in time!! grin

Witt Wed 31-Jul-13 20:05:11

Masterchef is not the same with Michel Roux Jr sad

I think Katy Brand will be good. All the other contestants tonight will annoy me.

MissWimpyDimple Wed 31-Jul-13 20:22:11

I love Katie brand!

SaguaroBlossom Wed 31-Jul-13 20:37:09

I'm enjoying Janet SP arguing with Gregg!

ArgumentativeAardvark Wed 31-Jul-13 20:47:45

Who is Jo? Am I being dense?

Witt Wed 31-Jul-13 20:49:13

She was married to Ronnie Wood. Oh, and she did Strictly one year. She really irritates me with her girlie feckless "look after me" behaviour.

Lighthousekeeping Wed 31-Jul-13 20:50:30

I have a problem with plaits on anyone over 9.

Witt Wed 31-Jul-13 20:50:57

I want that makeup! How does he get that gold line down his nose?

MsNobodyAgain Wed 31-Jul-13 21:19:43

I enjoyed JSP too although sometimes she is stroppy just for the sake of it.

And yes, Jo Wood. Stop it with the plaits and the girlish giggles. You are a grown woman.

No ides who the other 2 are.

Still looking forward to tomorrows episode though.

Ellenora5 Thu 01-Aug-13 00:49:13

It was ok, Janet will do well I think, doesn't she have a farm off sorts, didn't Gordon Ramsey cook the lambs she reared on another show, she also grows all her own veg and herbs as far as I remember, Jo Wood is awful she thinks she is 16 until she says, I was touring for 30 years and have a load of grandchildren, no one is buying the silly girlie act, I have no idea who Katy Brand is, was the other one in Atomic Kitten, Gregg and John are always so obvious with the pretty young celebrities, remember when Lisa Faulkner won, or Jayne Middlemiss, or the other one from Atomic Kitten, none of them should have won, I think Cilla from Corrie was amazing when she was on it and so was Christine Hamilton, they were both brilliant, were they on the same year.

Sorry just realised my post is full of questions blush

Witt Thu 01-Aug-13 07:53:59

I think Lisa Faulkner is going out with John Torode now. And yes, they obviously like a pretty face and are quite biased in that respect.

Janet's been on quite a few cooking shows, like Hell's Kitchen, thinking about it so she should do well.

Katy Brand is a comedian. Not sure I could name a show she's been on though.

Ellenora5 Thu 01-Aug-13 14:59:16

Thanks Witt, can't place Katy Brand at all, is Lisa going out with John, wasn't she married to the man in eastenders who was abusing Whitney. I don't remember Janet on HK, but you are right she should do well, she's awfully moody though.

Lighthousekeeping Thu 01-Aug-13 18:42:56

She looks great for her age.

Witt Thu 01-Aug-13 18:49:01

I'm not a fan of Janet, she seems to have a massive chip on her shoulder.

Link to Lisa/John story - warning Daily Fail link.

Allthingspretty Thu 01-Aug-13 20:00:07

ooh so glad there ia a thread on this as I am missing my apprentice fix and mn apprentice thread.

DuffyMoon Thu 01-Aug-13 20:02:40

Yaaaaaay...evening all

Allthingspretty Thu 01-Aug-13 20:05:49

Helli Duffy

DuffyMoon Thu 01-Aug-13 20:06:08

Jo and Janet...what a good match...

Hello all. The food looks well poncy.

Allthingspretty Thu 01-Aug-13 20:17:32

I hate all the touching of the food. Overly handled food makes me envy <<sick

yournotfat Thu 01-Aug-13 20:17:35

It's got to be Jo who goes home.

chickensaladagain Thu 01-Aug-13 20:18:30

Heidi to go on the basis that Jo did better last night

DuffyMoon Thu 01-Aug-13 20:19:23

That's how fish is grin

Me too Allthings, plus it must be stone cold by the time it gets served up. confused

DH has turned over now and we are watching something about car salesmen. angry

yournotfat Thu 01-Aug-13 20:20:31

You might be right about Heidi. I like he earrings though. grin

Allthingspretty Thu 01-Aug-13 20:22:22

Sparkling to be honest MC is fairly boring atm.

yournotfat Thu 01-Aug-13 20:22:39

*her

DuffyMoon Thu 01-Aug-13 20:23:08

Sparkling - LTB

LottieJenkins Thu 01-Aug-13 20:29:03

Jo Wood's hair is driving me mad! I am surprised she was allowed to cook with it all hanging down like that!
JSP's ex husband (no 2 or 3) is buried next to my Jack in the churchyard!

magimedi Thu 01-Aug-13 22:41:03

Jo Woods made me feel so cross & stabby.

Any grown woman who wears pigtails deserves to be strangled by them.

I suspect Janet will stay for a long time as she makes for such good TV.

Ellenora5 Fri 02-Aug-13 00:13:33

Thanks for the link Witt, don't know how I missed all that happening.

Sparklingbrook, I am always amazed at how the place is spotless when their food is tasted and always shout at the telly, it must be cold. It annoys me in every masterchef show, even Australia masterchef and that's my favourite. I'm glad Heidi went, if she had have gone through it would have confirmed what I said up thread about the pretty girls and John and Gregg grin

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 02-Aug-13 00:49:31

That raddled Jo woman was quite a pathetic creature. Kept going on about being 'on tour' like she was in a band herself and was still trying to live the life. I simultaneously felt pity and an urge to stab. Repeatedly.

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 02-Aug-13 11:14:06

Or buy her a bar of soap.

Witt Fri 02-Aug-13 19:36:58

5 mins in and Jo has already irritated me. Hopefully she's out tonight.

Witt Fri 02-Aug-13 19:52:49

She should be out after not cooking anything today.

magimedi Fri 02-Aug-13 22:51:01

Jo is gone!!

Whoope-do-da-day!

Ellenora5 Sat 03-Aug-13 01:30:04

I would be a brilliant cook if all I had to do was shave vegetables, the right decision was made, her silliness was awful, "when I cook for my kids blah blah blah" her kids are adults for goodness sake.

Next week looks interesting, another one who has already been on a cooking show, Ade Edmondson, if he doesn't do well he may forget about cooking altogether

justanuthermanicmumsday Sat 03-Aug-13 02:04:43

is it me or anyone else think andi peters on judging panel today was totally arrogant and unreasonable about every single candidates food? he had a snooty look about him too like he was a connoisseur just because he had been on MasterChef previously . I don't know why they bother inviting winners back they're not experts after all.

Witt Sat 03-Aug-13 08:30:26

There was clearly tension between Janet and Christine. I wonder if Lisa and John had discussed the contestants before she ate their food.

mrslyman Sat 03-Aug-13 09:41:31

Yes Andi Peters was being a bit of an arse, not sure why, I didn't see his series so not sure if he was any good.

Quite enjoyed this week, it's such an easy watch. Highlights for me was Janet not being used to pleasing men and Katy cooking the Mirrin salmon which I'm pretty sure was the same recipe I use from Nigella Express poshed up a bit.

Ellenora5 Sat 03-Aug-13 12:50:26

He came across as a complete twat, I don't remember his series either, must have been quite a forgettable one.

SilverOldie Sat 03-Aug-13 13:53:46

Yes I agree, Andi Peters was up himself. Janet SP makes me laugh, glad Jo Wood has gone - isn't she a bit old to be playing a rock chick?

I wonder if Katy Brand is Jo Brand's daughter?

MsNobodyAgain Sat 03-Aug-13 15:04:25

She isn't apparently. I wondered the same and Wiki threw up the answer.

MunchkinsMumof2 Sat 03-Aug-13 22:21:34

I thought Andi Peters was up his own arse.......being in a cookery show does not make you a credible food critic. I'm looking forward to next week, this and Australian Masterchef are my fave tv shows.

Fairyloo Sat 03-Aug-13 22:26:15

Didn't Lisa Faulkner look nice au natural.

Looked like she had just bobbed in from the school run. I like her

Hate Greg though. He seems do pervy

MunchkinsMumof2 Sat 03-Aug-13 22:28:32

I thought she looked beautiful, Fairyloo I hope she and John are happy together <invests far too much in all things MC>

Bakingnovice Sun 04-Aug-13 23:35:46

Oh hated Jo-I'm with the band-wood. How sad t be utterly and completely defined by your ex and his touring.

And I can't stand Greg. Just cos you lost your fat gut doesn't mean you are now gods gifts to women. Also, why are they regurgitating all the naff slebs we've seen on shows like Hell's Kitchen and dance for comic relief. It's so boring. JSP is known to be a foodie and she was on ramsays cooking show. And now ade.

mrslyman Sun 04-Aug-13 23:55:03

Greg is awful, but it wasn't loosing his fat gut that made him think he's goods gift. I read an interview with him years ago where he was bragging about how his ability to bed 21 year olds had improved due to being on tv, yuk.

nennypops Mon 05-Aug-13 00:02:47

I must say I quite sympathise with Janet S-P about presentation. There seems to be so much emphasis on the importance of making the plate look "pretty" to the point when it just looks stupid - particularly when it ends up as three pretty minuscule portions of pud evenly spread out along an oblong plate. I'd rather have a decent portion of something that tastes good without worrying endlessly about how it looks.

Ellenora5 Mon 05-Aug-13 14:11:22

Everytime I log in now I see Greggs face at the top of the page....it's giving me the creeps.

Ellenora5 Thu 08-Aug-13 01:30:53

Anyone watch tonights, not as good as last week, how come Ade Edmonson can't cook, I reckon he is holding out till Friday and will pull out all the stops then, John was a bit of a know it all, Denise might know what she is doing if she has more time, are we going to get bored with it, it's not very exciting.

MsNobodyAgain Thu 08-Aug-13 07:15:43

It was awful last night. Ade playing the 'I don't know anything' card. Denise improved a bit but she looked awful irrelevant.

I think the fella from 'Cold Feet' might be a dark horse.

Isn't it depressing seeing the actors you used to watch years ago becoming more mature old

mrslyman Thu 08-Aug-13 16:29:49

The bloke from cold feet was taking it all a bit too seriously, and Ade not taking it seriously enough perhaps.

Who is Denise? I can't quite place her (or be bothered to google it would seem grin

Onesleeptillwembley Thu 08-Aug-13 16:43:41

Denise was Kens bit on the side in corry. She looked like she'd been living in a skip since.

Davros Thu 08-Aug-13 19:12:09

That spicy chicken meatball dish with pasta was just WRONG! I kept saying it was student food and then they turned up at Kingston "university" (poly in my day), they should have saved it for the students.

TSSDNCOP Thu 08-Aug-13 20:18:21

Hold on, hasn't Ade Edmonston done MC before? Or am I thinking of Hells Kitchen?

TSSDNCOP Thu 08-Aug-13 20:50:40

Ha! I was right. He came second on Hells Kitchen in 2009.

Ellenora5 Thu 08-Aug-13 22:40:08

Ye he did TSSDNCOP, that's why it was so unbelievable when he seemed to be doing badly, I think it was right John went tonight, he was very cocky and thought he would sail through, I'm glad Denise went through she did a lot better, but yes I agree about her appearance, she needs to sort out her hair.

mrslyman Fri 09-Aug-13 12:35:01

Davros I know it looked terrible.

I do find the palate test round really puzzling, John and Greg spend most of the series telling the contestants to keep things simple and not to confuse different tastes and then he goes on to produce dishes which contain everything in his kitchen cupboard.

Also glad John went he was really irritating me.

mrslyman Fri 09-Aug-13 12:36:41

onesleeptillwembley thank you, I remember her now.

difficultpickle Fri 09-Aug-13 12:44:08

I don't know who Denise Black is but a quick google reveals she is going grey for a part in Emmerdale, which I have also never seen.

I went to the Anniversary Games the other weekend and wondered why Philips Odowu wasn't competing. I don't understand how a supposed elite athlete can find the time to do this programme.

eddiemairswife Fri 09-Aug-13 13:16:05

Denise had one of Ken Barlow's children - a surviving twin.

mrslyman Fri 09-Aug-13 15:14:02

I'm not 100% sure but I thought he'd retired due to injury.

difficultpickle Fri 09-Aug-13 15:30:46

You're right, I missed that he'd made an announcement last month apparently.

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 09-Aug-13 16:25:20

Oh dear - read that as though you meant Ken Barlow had retired due to injury. shock

MortifiedAdams Fri 09-Aug-13 19:21:11

I so want Ade to win based on how much I loved Bottom wwhen I was younger.

MsNobodyAgain Fri 09-Aug-13 19:26:36

Wow, I was wrong about John. That pie thing, ugh!

I'd like Denise to win.

Ellenora5 Fri 09-Aug-13 22:02:08

It's no surprise that Ade went through, if you haven't learnt anything from Marco Pierre White then you need to stay out of the kitchen, I'm glad Denise went through. Who was the other lady with Christine and Phil, don't know her at all.

Begginyouformercy Mon 12-Aug-13 14:45:09

"Denise Black is going grey for a part in Emmerdale"

Bugger. I just came in here to tell you lot I was in a cold sweat watching her because she's so like my SiL and I see she's joining my second favourite programme. I'm going to have to put an order in to Majestic.

It was Emma Kennedy, Ellenora, she won the previous (I think) Sleb MC.

Ellenora5 Sat 17-Aug-13 04:13:54

Ive been away for a few days, was no one watching this week, I had it recorded and caught up on it all tonight, Shane was good, he knows what he is doing, was very surprised with Brian, I had him written off early on, hated Shappi she was trying to turn it all into a joke, polenta/placenta, haha as if we didn't see the smirk when you were saying it, I thought it was fair that Shane and Brian went through to the semi finals, I can't wait until Janet comes back (fireworks)grin

Ellenora5 Sat 17-Aug-13 04:15:50

Thanks beggingyou, I must have missed that one where she won, I'll have to wiki her smile

MsNobodyAgain Sat 17-Aug-13 06:39:05

I am still watching. Been away for a week but caught up now.

I didn't like Shappi either. I had no idea who she was until the 'placenta' remark then I realised she must be a comedian (comedienne?).

Brian improved a lot and Shane was good. I find his tattoos very distracting though grin

The only one I recognise in next weeks is Les Denis.

MortifiedAdams Sat 17-Aug-13 06:41:59

I havent watched Fridays episode yet but I am.very pleased to read that Shappi has gone. Ive seen her do the odd bit of stabd up and it was OK but she was god awful on Masterchef.

Gracelo Sat 17-Aug-13 07:11:34

Shane's fish stew looked so fantastic. I really hope the production team gobbled it up, all that lovely seafood. I think he has potential.
I liked Brian's food but he is going to flounder in any mass catering challenges coming up, I think.

twistedtoffee Sat 17-Aug-13 12:52:17

Shapi should never have got through to Friday's round. She was a disaster in most of the earlier tasks, far worse than Miranda. Glad she went last night.

Trills Sat 17-Aug-13 13:04:40

Have you seen this graph?

I generally like to pretend that I don't know who any of them are - Masterchef is interesting enough when it's just people. I do wish Greg and John would just say "contestants" rather than "celebrities".

Gracelo Sat 17-Aug-13 15:04:53

I didn't recognize a single one of next week's celebrities and very few of the ones that have already been.

difficultpickle Sat 17-Aug-13 15:08:59

Who pays for their ingredients? In the old days the contestants had a budget they had to stick to. Shane's menu was seriously expensive.

Wingedharpy Sun 18-Aug-13 01:39:44

Why, oh why, oh why don't they invest in a tray?
Seriously - every series they have contestants trying to serve 3 meals to guest judges.
They have no tray - so they can only carry 2 plates - and why doesn't someone open the door to the dining room for them instead of J and G just standing watching them struggle?
Just buy a bloody tray.

Davros Sun 18-Aug-13 08:49:57

I agree. Is it some kind of test, carry the food without dropping it and only serve two people when there are three? It's stupid.
I can't wait to see Matthew Hoggard next week, I think he might be quite funny but very competitive.

MortifiedAdams Sun 18-Aug-13 09:53:15

Or just put a littketable next to the door - serve from there!

Maryz Wed 21-Aug-13 12:08:27

Oh, I didn't know there was a thread about this.

Yippee.

<marks place to catch up and join in tonight>

Maryz Wed 21-Aug-13 12:09:16

I love that graph Trills grin

OliviaMMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 21-Aug-13 20:08:53

Can someone please enlighten me - I am not a seasoned watcher of Masterchef but have cuaght it a few times this seres
There seem to be new slebs every time i watch though
What happened to JSP? She seemed quite good
ANd now it's Les Dennis?!?!?
Confused

MortifiedAdams Wed 21-Aug-13 20:13:13

Four heats with four Slebs in each. Each week they are whittled down to two.

We will see JSP next week.

MsNobodyAgain Wed 21-Aug-13 21:42:23

Joe was awful! And as for Les Denis's custard shock

Speech has got this one in the bag.

Maryz Wed 21-Aug-13 23:45:13

They were crap tonight, except the girl whose name I don't know blush

They won't be able to do anything with Joe.

Maryz Wed 21-Aug-13 23:46:57

Sorry, Speech shock - is that really her name, I thought I was mis-hearing.

Olivia, this is done with four slebs a week so they all get a shot at everything. If they were to chuck one out on day 1 (like they do with usual MC) presumably they wouldn't want to pay them.

Next week is the last week, I think. Then two weeks for "semis" and "finals" - though why they call them that I don't know. It's just a continual elimination a la Xfactor hmm

loopydoo Wed 21-Aug-13 23:49:31

Blimey, this weeks heats are defo the worse at cooking yet. I like Les Dennis even though he's not great at the actual cooking so I guess Speech is the best of the four but she's a bit flappy and looks unorganised.

loopydoo Wed 21-Aug-13 23:49:51

Janet Street -Porter is my fave so far!!

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 00:04:55

Oh, yes, I forgot about Janet.

I thought she was going to just bully them into letting her through, but she can actually cook grin

I think Speech will struggle in the professional kitchen. She may be one of these people who can cook what they are used to cooking, what they have practised, but can't really learn and improve that much.

I hope I'm wrong though. She seems rather sweet [old gimmer emoticon]

Ellenora5 Thu 22-Aug-13 11:51:37

It certainly wasn't one of the best I've seen, I agree that Speech will go through, Les might just scrap it, if they can forgive the bread and butter pudding, who was the other fella, I only knew Joe because he was on Strictly a few years ago.

Lorelilee Thu 22-Aug-13 12:12:44

Matthew Hoggard is a cricketer, I believe. Agree that Speech and Les will probably go through.

eddiemairswife Thu 22-Aug-13 13:55:21

Speech's name is Corynne Elliot.

Ellenora5 Thu 22-Aug-13 17:37:38

Thanks Loreliee

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:07:59

So here goes. Venison and snails with puréed poo [bleurgh]. The lamb looks nice.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:15:51

Actually dread the real life restaurant kitchen part. Poor Les

Waiting for Michael to totally screw up the steaks now.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:16:34

Joe, even

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:18:35

Matthew is doing ok.

Joe is falling apart.

Les is a twat.

I'm not sure about Speech. I thought she would collapse, but she's ok so far.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:20:19

Yes, it's Matthew and Speech's game really, isn't it.

Wonder if they deliberately give the more complex/popular dishes to those likely to screw up?

DS watching this in bed, he just shouted downstairs 'Mum, apparently Les is a comedian!'

He is only 8 bless him and has a fab sense of humour!!!

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:24:51

Good old DS Madame

Poor Joe, "2 minutes, chef" on everything

They might have known this would happen

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:27:51

Oh dear. That was bad.

I would like them to put joe and Les together.

GetStuffezd Thu 22-Aug-13 20:29:46

Does anyone know what that music is called? The one that just played as they went back into the Masterchef HQ? It's driving me crackers!

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:32:36

I missed it. Shout if the play it again.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:33:58

Crikey, is Speech making fresh pasta? Dough actually looks ok though.

Hope her cheesecake will be amazing.
Matthew is doomed - he's just said he's only going to give 100%, when all football pundits know that you have to give at least 110% to succeed...

squoosh Thu 22-Aug-13 20:36:09

Gregg Wallace gives me the heebie jeebies.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:37:57

Fish pie and strawberry salsa?

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:41:35

So Joe made pasta, guided by Speech, and now Greg knows that Italian is obviously his metier?

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:41:40

Joe has to go surely.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:47:30

Les going for the fondant. Greg has another chance to patronise him with his "Well done mate, I'm so happy for you" style comments..

I think Speech's beef sounds yummy.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:48:50

Yes, Joe to go. Not before the fake thoughtful debate by Greg and John.

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:51:20

I'm a bit sceptical about this pre-practiced stuff.

It's all very complicated with no real knowledge or innate skill, just copying.

Les will go through ecause Greg likes him.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:52:56

Yoghurt plus cream = genius. Who knew?

And why is Greg channelling Val Doonican?

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 20:56:51

Matthew's 'innit to winnit'.

Go big or go home baby

Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 20:58:51

That's good. Now fingers crossed for Les to go tomorrow. He was unbelievably shite in the prof kitchen.

Elderflowergranita Thu 22-Aug-13 21:03:53

Yes, bye bye Les.

One chocolate fondant doesn't make you 'better than a home cook', or even as good as one.

Looks like that prat Andi Peters is a judge tomorrow. I remember him on celeb MC years back. He wasn't half as good as he imagined.

magimedi Thu 22-Aug-13 22:27:44

Can anyone remember the name of the restaurant that Speech & Joe were placed in? Somewhere in Chinatown, London?

TIA flowers

MortifiedAdams Thu 22-Aug-13 22:34:18

Spice something or something spice. will google.

MortifiedAdams Thu 22-Aug-13 22:35:35
Maryz Thu 22-Aug-13 22:45:51

I don't think I've ever seen a restaurant on MasterChef and thought "I'd like to eat there". Most of them would leave me feeling hungry, and guilty for destroying the art work on the plate.

Not to mention the amount the food is handled [bleurgh]

magimedi Thu 22-Aug-13 22:50:25

Have to say I do fancy Spice Market.

Many thanks, Mortified flowers

Jux Thu 22-Aug-13 23:33:19

Just seen it!

Les just looks so grubby. A grubby, seedy little man in a dirty mac, down a dark alley selling dodgy photos.

Ellenora5 Fri 23-Aug-13 01:39:59

Oh dear, that was woeful, Speech can't string a sentence together (ironic), but she can cook, Joe looked like he was going to cry and did he do a yes thingy with his arm when he was leaving just as he got to the "get out door", Les can not cook, I really thought last night he might just pull something out of the bag, I didn't rate Matthew at all but he seems to know what he is doing, I putting my money on JSP and Ade Edmundson, maybe Shane to come third, I will look like this blush if I'm wrong.

Elderflowergranita Fri 23-Aug-13 21:00:32

So matthew's gone - bit of a surprise there.

Did Speech actually say that she thought she'd 'made her peeps proud'?

Ellenora5 Fri 23-Aug-13 22:15:08

Yes she did Elderflower, I can't warm to her at all, very surprised Les made it through.

Jux Fri 23-Aug-13 22:17:28

I like Speech. And she can cook.

Gracelo Sat 24-Aug-13 07:44:07

I like Speech too and I prefer her food to anybody else's in this series. She comes across as quite unflappable.
Les creeps me out and I still don't really know who he is and what he is famous for.

ilovesooty Sat 24-Aug-13 14:47:03

I've missed this week. TV problems. Looking forward to seeing Janet again.

Cuckoomama Sat 24-Aug-13 16:19:54

I think Joe did "the wanker" gesture thing as he left the programme.

Bakingnovice Sat 24-Aug-13 21:22:57

That fucking Emma does my head in when she samples the food. What an annoying charmless woman.

I like speech but I still hate Greg. He's horrible, he's got no palette and likes everything.

Ellenora5 Sat 24-Aug-13 21:39:07

Oh is that what it was Cuckoomama, grin haha I though it was the yessss thingy because he was thrown out, I wouldn't imagine John or Gregg would be happy with that.

Cuckoomama Sat 24-Aug-13 21:55:11

Certainly looked like it when I checked it out. Up until then I thought he seemed ok, but now I think he's a bit of a knob jockey,(pardon the pun).

birdbrain21 Thu 29-Aug-13 13:38:30

just found this thread so thought I'd join in smile I agree with most of the comments on here...but don't understand why anyone likes Janet, yes she can cook but she has got such a nasty attitude fx she leaves before the final she really drives me mad! I think speech is quite good though hope she makes it through, she really seems to try and cares about her food!

thistlelicker Thu 29-Aug-13 13:41:28

Speech or shame to win!

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 13:51:09

Yeah, I'd be happy with either one as winner.
I don't think I have seen so much open competitiveness on MC before like last night.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 14:44:20

I have just caught up on last weeks and last nights.

Can I just say - Les is an arse, and Greg is even more of an arse than I thought because he thinks he is good hmm

And pike? Really, pike? Has anyone every in the history of the world got pike to taste good? I think they did well to cook it at all, revolting fish.

I think I would like Shane to win. He was pretty useless to start, but seems to really, really want to do well. I always thought he was a bit of an idiot, but I'm warming to him.

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 14:55:47

I thought it was unfair to give them pike when the other team had salmon. I've never had pike but I assume it is rather muddy tasting.
That tarte Tatin that Ade made looked burned, I didn't fancy it at all. Would have preferred the mulled fruit.

Shane is really quite funny and comes across as rather nice. Their entire team just looked so calm and relaxed. It made a nice change from the usual mayhem that the mass catering challenges turn into.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 14:57:46

It isn't even muddy tasting.

It tastes like water, with a hint of mould. And has more bones than you could possibly imagine.

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 15:07:45

You make it sound very attractive smile
I wonder how it usually would have been cooked or did people only eat it because there wasn't much choice?

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 15:09:54

I don't think anyone voluntarily eats it, ever.

I used to fish with my parents in the West of Ireland. Pike were always thrown back, unless they were "specimen sized" and kept for show hmm

[bleurgh]

Ellenora5 Thu 29-Aug-13 15:16:25

I honestly don't know why Les is still there, he hadn't a clue how to cook the salmon and kept asking the others, I'm going off Ade, he seems a bit stuck up, I think Denise should have been given a chance as she did so well before last night and Les should have been drop kicked out the door. I like Shane because he doesn't get in a flap and looks at John with an expression that says "chill man, it will all get done".

Janet is a great cook to be fair, but she has a strange attitude to people, although I do like the way she puts Greg down and it always sounds like she is calling him Craigsmile. Her lamb pie thing was not presented nicely no matter what they said, but it would probably be hard to present that in a nice way.

As for the pike [puke]

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 15:19:34

I googled for recipes and according to Thomasina Miers it is considered a delicacy in France, hmm. I also just realized that pike is what's called Hecht in German and it's eaten there as well. I can't remember that I ever ate it, though.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 15:25:48

Ah, Gracelo. A delicacy in France. Possibly like snails [even more bleurgh]

The French seem to take great pride in making revolting food taste ok by the addition of garlic and sundry other ingredients.

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 15:46:02

Most things do taste better with garlic, I draw a line at eating snails though. I dissected one sometime early on in my biology degree. It was vile. There was mucus everywhere.

Caoilainn Thu 29-Aug-13 19:35:05

The word mucus makes me shudder. It's up there with moist.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:03:25

So, teams.

Janet will shout and roar. Les will snigger a bit.

Shane and Speech will do all the work hmm

mrsharrystyles Thu 29-Aug-13 20:09:04

Does anyone get chucked out tonight? Please God let it be Les.

mrsharrystyles Thu 29-Aug-13 20:09:22

Does anyone get chucked out tonight? Please God let it be Les.

mrsharrystyles Thu 29-Aug-13 20:10:12

Oops!

Caoilainn Thu 29-Aug-13 20:10:18

Sounds about right Maryz! Les will ask Shane if stuff is cooked every 5 mins

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:13:05

It's ok MrsHS it was worth saying twice grin

Caoilainn Thu 29-Aug-13 20:16:17

Bless Shane, if there was every anyone less like him... smile

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:17:33

Janet is all mouth and no trousers, as my old granny used to say!

BoffinMum Thu 29-Aug-13 20:19:43

Janet is annoying. I wish she would stop moaning.

Caoilainn Thu 29-Aug-13 20:19:44

How many finger condoms does Les actually need?! Surprised he has any fingers left!!

thistlelicker Thu 29-Aug-13 20:25:26

Portion control is dire!! I'm starving

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:34:46

Who did all the sugar in the end? It wasn't Janet.

thistlelicker Thu 29-Aug-13 20:35:43

The man with the silly hat I think

I liked Janice in other shows .

She has been obnoxious on mc and tonight I've loved seeing chef put her right.

Hope she gets the push , can't stand her now.

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 20:38:05

This is nothing like I remember university.
Shane and Speech still, or even more after this, my favs.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:38:13

If Les gets through with pears I might have to smash the telly hmm

squoosh Thu 29-Aug-13 20:38:36

Brian's story about his Dad was quite sweet.

Caoilainn Thu 29-Aug-13 20:38:41

I wondered that, she stopped doing it. Saw the chef in charge doing some in the background hmm

Now feel like I'm in the x-factor sob story section.

I liked Janice in other shows .

She has been obnoxious on mc and tonight I've loved seeing chef put her right.

Hope she gets the push , can't stand her now.

mrsharrystyles Thu 29-Aug-13 20:42:17

I love Janet, and I love the colours of her top and cardi. I know that's very superficial.

thistlelicker Thu 29-Aug-13 20:47:29

Janet just can't take constructive critisism! And that makes her arrogant

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:54:20

I still like Shane. How embarrassing.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 20:55:43

Oh, les wasn't pears. He's rice pud.

Nooo!

mrsharrystyles Thu 29-Aug-13 20:56:34

Oh bloody hell, another prog with Les in it.

thistlelicker Thu 29-Aug-13 20:56:53

Oooohhhhh Shane to win now

squoosh Thu 29-Aug-13 20:57:19

Poor old Les, he's so pathetically thrilled.

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 21:00:55

Can't believe Les is still in and Speech is out.

Maryz Thu 29-Aug-13 21:01:26

Oh no. They just seemed to suddenly stop liking her confused

Bakingnovice Thu 29-Aug-13 21:04:07

Bloody les! Urghh go away!

And what is the point of Greg? In the Cambridge task all he did washout out stupid jokes. He makes my skin crawl and needs to go. Violent thug.

Think Shane will win.

Fancies40Winks Thu 29-Aug-13 21:04:24

Speech getting the boot is just bullshit. She hasn't put a foot wrong in any of the challenges, and half assed Ade made a bloody poached pear and some un-set icecream. I don't think I'll be watching any more.

Gracelo Thu 29-Aug-13 21:04:45

She was so good in the challenges as well. Does all that not come into the judging? I don't think a MC decision has ever annoyed me that much before.

Bakingnovice Thu 29-Aug-13 21:06:53

And ade has done other cooking shows. Poor speech.

Caoilainn Thu 29-Aug-13 21:13:00

How the hell did that happen? Neil and Les were weaker. Janice and Ade were more arrogant. Doesn't help that I actually don't like Greg or whatshisface dude.

They must completely ignore all the tasks so what's the point of them. angry

Lorelilee Thu 29-Aug-13 21:13:15

I think Speech seemed to have stalled - she wasn't progressing - to my mind, all of the others have (with the possible exception of Janet, but she's good telly), even Les. Also, there was a hint of attitude about her tonight and maybe there was more of that behind the scenes we didn't see.

SeaSickSal Thu 29-Aug-13 21:13:32

I want to do unspeakable things to Shane Lynch.

squoosh Thu 29-Aug-13 21:21:54

I think Speech deserved to go, some of her flavour combinations were a bit random.

Elderflowergranita Thu 29-Aug-13 22:07:16

Her final dish was really poor, lacked cohesion and didn't show any real understanding of cooking. Shame really, she just played it really, really wrong.

What is the it with the big love-in between Les and Greg? Every time Greg passed him by, he seemed compelled to give him a reassuring pat.

nennypops Thu 29-Aug-13 22:21:13

Remember Speech messed up yesterday - she was primarily responsible for the perch dish described as one of the most disgusting every produced on Masterchef.

Ellenora5 Thu 29-Aug-13 22:35:48

Wow I really thought Les would go, I love Shane and I want him to win, but I thought the soup wouldn't be enough, glad it was.

Janet is a messy worker, it wouldn't have killed her to clean the flipping bowl, Bryan did look upset at his meal though, he is over thinking things.

Wonder who the makes the yukky butternut squash fondant tomorrow night, have a strange feeling it will be Shane sad

DuelingFanjo Thu 29-Aug-13 22:38:36

They seem to be giving Shane an easy ride to the final for some reason.

squoosh Thu 29-Aug-13 22:39:13

Yeah, soup and a bread roll?? I found that odd.

Gracelo Fri 30-Aug-13 06:26:39

Les' rice pudding was an odd combination as well though. What was that mojito shot doing there? They neither tried it nor commented on it iIrc. And biscuits alongside a bowl of carbs, why? (I do have a thing about carbs with carbs, bleugh, maybe that's just me).
Ade's poached pear wasn't ambitious at all, who can't poach a pear? And making ice cream is a doodle. I've made loads of really delicious ice cream since I bought an ice cream maker a few months ago.
I agree that Speech should probably have cooked something else for this decisive stage of the competition but I still feel the judging was utterly unfair.

Bakingnovice Fri 30-Aug-13 08:31:12

Grace you are spot on. Les's rice pudding dish was awful and very basic. Something my kids would make. And the biscuits looked a state and didn't go with the dish. Ade just peeled a pair and stuck it in a pan of red wine. Again, so basic. The sloppy ice cream should have seen him gone. I like Brian but his dish sounded and looked terrible. I hate this new fad of bet root ''three ways', and sauces painted onto plates.

And I will ask again - what is the point of Greg?!!

Bakingnovice Fri 30-Aug-13 08:31:41

Pear not pair!

Gracelo Fri 30-Aug-13 08:47:08

The point of Greg is to have provided Jim Howick with the template for one of the greatest comic TV performances of all times. I can't actually watch MC anymore without seeing Jim and Ben instead of Greg and Jon. There isn't any other purpose to Greg that I can see.

dp says that he read somewhere that the BBC is "re-thinking" Greg's role in MC after he hit someone in a restaurant.

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 09:18:15

The point of Greg is to Akers John look intelligent and sophisticated. It's a very difficult job you know!

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 09:18:47

Not Akers, make of course confused

Jux Fri 30-Aug-13 11:59:25

No one can make John look intelligent and sophisticated grin

I thought the point of Greg was that he was the man with the money without which the show wouldn't actually exist?

squoosh Fri 30-Aug-13 12:05:15

Gregg is vile and I wish they would get two new hosts for the show. They really detract from my enjoyment of it.

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 15:45:37

That would explain it Jux. In fact that is the only possibility - despite much thought I haven't come up with any reason he would be there.

So who goes tonight? It looks like Les will be there to the bitter end. Ditto Janet. They seem to be the favourites for John and Greg.

Shane is kept for the eye-candy factor (audience must be sad middle-aged women like me ) so will hopefully stay.

So Neil or Ade. I don't much care.

To be fair to Speech and the fish, nenny, I doubt anyone could have done much with it and the other two weren't falling over her to deal with it. At least she tried.

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 17:47:08

Who is Neil??? Lol

Jux Fri 30-Aug-13 19:15:22

Is it on tonight, Maryz? When? (waaaaagh! I can't find it <drums heels>)

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 30-Aug-13 19:18:21

He was yet another of gails weird husbands on Corry. Actually he was pretty good.

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 19:19:37

Do u mean Richard Hillman!!!???

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 30-Aug-13 19:19:55

Sorry, that's Brian. blush

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 30-Aug-13 19:21:03

Yes, I did. grin

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 19:52:58

8.30 tonight.

It's awful, but I couldn't remember the corrie's name at all. I obviously have hardly noticed him.

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 20:32:47

Who doing butternut fondant

docket Fri 30-Aug-13 20:39:52

Brian is 66!
He doesn't look 66

IKnewHouseworkWasDangerous Fri 30-Aug-13 20:47:19

Les Dennis is apparently more famous than Ade Edmonson GOD that is depressing

squoosh Fri 30-Aug-13 20:47:21

He looks fantastico for 66!

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 20:49:31

Lamb is my favourite meat!! Shane's looks amazing

squoosh Fri 30-Aug-13 20:50:49

Shane's looks shocking!

MrsShrek3 Fri 30-Aug-13 20:54:02

the table manners of the "judge"/critic people are shocking shock shock

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 20:55:06

It looked amazing til they cut it!!!

I love.Jay rayner, I reckon ade's going.

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 20:56:28

I hope not Shane I had him to win

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 20:57:01

Ffs!!!!!!

Well!

Come on Brian, you've got to win this now.

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 21:04:44

Shitey shite.

I don't really care any more

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 21:06:14

Actually, I do care.

I DON'T want Les. I DON'T want Janet. And I don't much want ade either hmm

DuelingFanjo Fri 30-Aug-13 21:15:42

This is about the best cook, not which celebrity you dislike. Brian, Janet and Les all proved they were the best cooks today. Shane's last three meals have been shit. The lobster and champagne was no great shakes, the soup was just weak and now the crap lamb. He had some luck at the start but Janet has been consistently great.

thistlelicker Fri 30-Aug-13 21:25:30

Janet is home cooking! There no finesse to it

Ellenora5 Fri 30-Aug-13 21:45:14

Ah I'm disgusted Shane is gone, don't care who wins, Janet can definitely cook but it still looks shit on a plate, very unappetising.

DuelingFanjo Fri 30-Aug-13 21:55:36

It may be badly presented but most of the judges have loved the taste of Janet's food. Better to have great tasting food than something tat looks lovely but tastes like shit. Shane clearly fucked up, which is a shame because he showed promise. Just because you fancy him or find him a more attractive personality doesn't mean he should geta free pass.

Maryz Fri 30-Aug-13 22:07:37

Ah, come on Fanjoshock

Where's the fun in it being about the cooking?

If they wast restaurant food, they have to go with Briansurely? Janet's really looks awful

Bakingnovice Fri 30-Aug-13 22:52:33

Good god, Janet Ade and les in the final. I can't bear to watch. Three of the worst contestants ever. I'm over Janet's voice and arrogance, Ade needs to retire from reality tv and his jokes are lame and as for les, well it's obvious he's had a chef come in to help him along and I'm sick of his puppy dog eyes begging for approval.

At least Shane and speech had exciting vibrant food. Janet's food is very samey, les is a bore and Ade is a semi pro at cooking programmes. I'm not bothering with the rest of the show.

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 30-Aug-13 23:01:57

I missed speech, she and her cooking were so fresh and lovely.

Ellenora5 Fri 30-Aug-13 23:03:57

Talk about taking the fun out of a thread confused

Gracelo Sat 31-Aug-13 07:46:09

I don't think I can be bothered watching the rest. I know Shane messed up this time but if it was really between Ade and Shane then why not take into account that until then Shane seemed to be the stronger participant?
The remaining 4 are just so bland and middle aged and experienced at being on TV and so blah. I know, I know Janet is loud and mouthy and whatnot but she just seems to be so boringly predictable with it.
What I liked about Speech, besides her food, was how she clearly hasn't had that much experience in how to play it for a TV audience and I liked Shane's calm and confidence. I'm bored with the rest of them.
There wasn't a single dish yesterday which I actually wanted to eat , except for Brian's possibly, but I hate it when every bit of food has been touched by the cook.

Bakingnovice Sat 31-Aug-13 20:36:33

Very bland reality tv savvy contestants. I'm sure both Janet and Ade were on Hell's Kitchen with Gordon. The only one I like is Brian but all the food last night was bleurgh.

Jux Sat 31-Aug-13 22:30:35

I'm not sure I can cope with any more of Les' Princess Di impressions.

I do like Janet and Brian though.

MisguidedAngel Sun 01-Sep-13 10:57:08

I've just tried to get a couple of the recipes from the Sleb MC website and they've only got John Torode's from this series, all of which I thought weren't worth the considerable effort. Does anyone know if they're published anywhere else? I specially wanted one of the sea bass ones from the last programme, can't even remember who's it was. Les?

And Shane is absolutely gorgeous in spite of the tats.

MisguidedAngel Sun 01-Sep-13 10:58:25

Oh god - whose - and I am a grammar pedant!

birdbrain21 Sun 01-Sep-13 12:04:25

janet might be able to cook well but surely the whole point of masterchef is the taste and presentation, just bevcause it tastes good doesn't mean she should stay in if she can't present it nicely!!!!
still shocked that speech didn't make it to the final and Ade did on a pear and some grilled tuna!!!He's a nice guy but doesn't exactly make an effort.
If Janet wins I think I may throw something at the tv

twistedtoffee Mon 02-Sep-13 13:43:58

I love Ade and Janet. They're not taking it too intensely and seriously but both obviously enjoy cooking. I'd like Ade to win and Janet to come second.

Trills Mon 02-Sep-13 13:45:33

I think it's a shame that Masterchef doesn't give you the contestants' recipes as well - at least the recipes for the things where they choose what to make (maybe not for the invention tests!).

thistlelicker Wed 04-Sep-13 20:07:48

I'm salivating at them meals!!

squoosh Wed 04-Sep-13 20:57:34

Aww I liked Brian.

Jux Wed 04-Sep-13 21:11:53

My friend has just told me that Les got through, even though his tarts were (both? Why did he make 2?) crap and his ice cream curdled, so 0 out of 3? If that's right, I cry "FIX".

thistlelicker Wed 04-Sep-13 21:18:24

They all had to make two an an ice cream! To be fair his were better than Brian's! Brian's were not set and scruffy!

Gracelo Thu 05-Sep-13 08:57:35

I watched and was bored.
I don't understand why Les is kept in every time it is between and someone else. Brian wasn't doing great but supposedly his treacle tart was tasting good.
I have never in my live eaten a treacle tart. I might have to look for a recipe.

Maryz Thu 05-Sep-13 09:46:26

ffs

Les escaped again.

Brian was the only one even trying to do any sort of restaurant food. The rest are not very pretty home cooking.

I couldn't believe them going on and on about Janet's presentation - it was two scruffy tarts on a board [baffled]

I remember the really wonderful stuff tat rugby player did last year. There hasn't been one truly restaurant standard dish in the whole series.

And Janet isn't honest and outspoken, she is just downright rude

Tell me again why I'm watching?

Gracelo Thu 05-Sep-13 09:50:51

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he'd win *Maryz". He must have some secret knowledge he uses to blackmail Jon/Greg.

Jux Thu 05-Sep-13 13:27:16

Agree with you. He must be a friend of their's or something; nothing else to explain how he's got this far and wasn't out in the early rounds except nepotism. Missed it last night, and I think shall continue to miss it for this series. Might come back for the next, assuming there is one.

Trifle Thu 05-Sep-13 21:03:50

Why does Janet keep banging on about there being a woman in the final, surely it's about the best cook not whether they are male or female.

thistlelicker Thu 05-Sep-13 21:22:39

I think I would need the chippy after looking at them portion sizes

DuelingFanjo Thu 05-Sep-13 21:45:41

Ade has Been the most consistent.

DSJamesHathaway Thu 05-Sep-13 21:48:11

John Torode is really irritating. How is it helping to keep going on at Janet when she's busy and stressed.

Gracelo Thu 05-Sep-13 21:54:57

Why did he take all the caramel thingies from the freezer rather than doing one after three other if they melt that quickly?
I'm not keen on chocolate deserts.

Ruprekt Thu 05-Sep-13 21:57:28

Les is so flipping emotional.

He looks like he is on the verge of a breakdown!

DSJamesHathaway Thu 05-Sep-13 22:05:35

Ade or Janet better win. Ade for being the best and Janet for her attitude to everything and scaring John and Shrek.

Jux Thu 05-Sep-13 22:25:58

Sadly, I didn't see it.

Onesleeptillwembley Fri 06-Sep-13 00:37:59

One of the men that work for my DP said that Les shakes like a shite ing dog.

Gracelo Fri 06-Sep-13 08:55:53

I would prefer if they'd cooked their own food for the chefs. I'm sure it's difficult enough to get someone else's recipe right but as a viewer I would find it more interesting if they would cook their own food.
I like all those chefs that were there yesterday, they all seem really nice especially Tom Kerridge.

Maryz Fri 06-Sep-13 10:16:06

Yes, we've hardly seen any of their own food. Possibly because they don't have any.

I thought the chefs were extraordinarily nice to them. I mean, they had to wait 15 minutes - and I bet it was much longer than that - Janet got a lot of help, Les was a disaster, I dunno, it all seems a bit meh.

I bet the viewing figures are right down. I think it wa last year we had a massive thread coming up to the final so if mumsnet interest is a reflection on rl, there won't be another series.

DSJamesHathaway Fri 06-Sep-13 10:19:19

Tom Kerridge was very poilte given he only got a main course and half a pudding.

mrswarbouys Fri 06-Sep-13 11:17:01

Agreed Witt JSP gets on my tits too. Sorry to go off subject here but I was furious seeing her flapping her gob a few months ago about Saville when his crimes were uncovered. She, Anne Robinson, Esther, Gambercini all admitted they'd all heard strong rumours and had deep suspicions. So why the f**k didn't they go to the D.G and demand some kind of action at the time. Threaten to leave, or go public ? Wouldn't be 'cos they were scared of losing their big fat commissions by any chance? Tossers.

Ive been watching, but haven`t really joined on the thread, sorry smile

I`ll be honest, think this year has been a real disappointment, its more for entertainment than cooking in my mind, and seems to be the JSP show. The way john and Gregg fawn over her is cringing. I still think Shane was quite good and the soup killed him, but he should be in the final. I`ll watch tonight if theres nothing else on grin.

My guess is JSP 1st the Ade and Les 3rd.

LaVolcan Fri 06-Sep-13 11:36:04

I watched and was bored.

Fell asleep - that summed it up for me. Think Ade will win. Like the way that Janet answers back to John and Greg - they are so up themselves, they need it.

MsNobodyAgain Fri 06-Sep-13 16:00:06

I started the thread and can't be arsed to watch it anymore.

I have last nights recorded. I might zip through it once I've mopped my floors.

LaVolcan Fri 06-Sep-13 16:09:21

Only one more half hour to go though.

starfishmummy Fri 06-Sep-13 16:36:07

I don't understand why they invited a judge who has a well known seafood allergy (if you watch great British menu) and then making a seafood starter.

We thought Les should have gone right from the heats. Jane's food has probably been the most consistent even if it has looked a mess.

starfishmummy Fri 06-Sep-13 16:36:29

Janet.

SoupDragon Fri 06-Sep-13 16:40:53

I've not watched all the episodes but I thin Ade deserves to win. Wasn't he the only one who actually did his own work last night and not cock it up?

Lottapianos Fri 06-Sep-13 16:49:48

I would like Ade to win. He seems like a really nice bloke and was the only one not to cock up massively last night.

I do enjoy Janet - especially her yelling at John when he was staring right into her face as she was trying to place up - although I'm very glad I don't have to live or work with her

Lottapianos Fri 06-Sep-13 16:50:03

plate up FFS

SoupDragon Fri 06-Sep-13 16:53:24

I want Ade to win so he can shove his wife's BAFTAs off the mantelpiece to make room for his trophy smile

MsNobodyAgain Fri 06-Sep-13 17:03:28

Great British Menu was good until they cocked it up last year.

Just noticed it's on again, 3pm on BBC2. I must find out if it's a repeat.

LaVolcan Fri 06-Sep-13 18:46:31

Great British Menu was good, but then it went on, and on, and on.... and was no longer worth watching.

Bakingnovice Fri 06-Sep-13 18:48:32

God it was bloody boring tonight and yesterday. Couldn't be bothered watching last night so watched it tonight on fast forward. What's the point in getting the finalists to recreate johns rabbit dish? At this stage it should be their own dishes??

Worst series ever. They didn't even go abroad for a challenge. I'm sorry but Janet, Ade and les are not watchable at all. Going to skip the final. I've had enough.

Relaxedandhappyperson Fri 06-Sep-13 18:52:49

I'm eating it. Fascinating to see Janet Street-Porter succumb to the "presentation matters" culture in order to win (she hopes).

Relaxedandhappyperson Fri 06-Sep-13 18:53:12

Watching. Not eating. blush

Elderflowergranita Fri 06-Sep-13 20:41:59

Les obviously coached by someone.

Janet's sounds a bit bog standard.

Ades doing a bit better.

If Les wins, I cannot believe he has any real ability, he's so tutored he forgot the names of some of his stuff.

FacebookWanker Fri 06-Sep-13 20:49:27

I was too busy MNing so I missed Les forgetting the names...

Elderflowergranita Fri 06-Sep-13 20:49:55

Have to admit, Janet seems like a genuine cook.

Elderflowergranita Fri 06-Sep-13 20:53:20

Ade has it, surely. In fairness, his food looks the business.

Now for the fake deliberation before they award him the prize.

FacebookWanker Fri 06-Sep-13 20:54:42

His food looked amazing

SoupDragon Fri 06-Sep-13 20:56:15

Both Ade and Janet's food is superb but Janet's presentation lets her down IMO.

FacebookWanker Fri 06-Sep-13 20:56:35

I quite fancy an wildflower granita

Gracelo Fri 06-Sep-13 20:56:55

Oh good.

SoupDragon Fri 06-Sep-13 20:57:01

Had to be Ade really

Theas18 Fri 06-Sep-13 20:57:28

Yay! Ade smile

Elderflowergranita Fri 06-Sep-13 20:57:42

There you go.

He deserved it.

FacebookWanker Fri 06-Sep-13 20:57:51

I'm not one for overly presented foo d, but Janet' s food didn't look good

squoosh Fri 06-Sep-13 20:57:57

Awww Ade is sweet.

FacebookWanker Fri 06-Sep-13 21:01:04

Bloody auto correct. That should have been elderflower granita.

Relaxedandhappyperson Fri 06-Sep-13 21:15:30

Yeah, not much tension there, his final dishes were so excellent.

Lizzabadger Fri 06-Sep-13 21:43:16

I did want Janet to win but Ade was definitely better on the night.

Ellenora5 Fri 06-Sep-13 22:50:53

Well he was the better cook in the end, so he deserved it, but it was not a good series, there must have been budget cuts somewhere, why did they not go abroad, I remember Christine Hamiltion having to cook on a train somewhere in the searing heat and Cilla (from corrie, can't remember her real name) cooking some sort of tagine on top of a resort also in the searing heat, I think it was the same series but I'm not sure, they were both fantastic cooks by the way, way better thatn anyone on this series.

SoupDragon Sat 07-Sep-13 08:17:54

I think from a purely cooking point of view, Janet and Ade were evenly matched. Janet was let down by presentation - if she'd got that right it would have been less clear who should have won IMO.

LaVolcan Sat 07-Sep-13 09:04:36

I would have booted Ade out when his ice-cream failed and they were left with just a poached pear, but they got rid of Speech instead.

I think Janet was consistently the better cook throughout, but presentation let her down, although personally, her good hearty meals beat all this fancy 'artwork on a plate' any day.

I'm glad Ade won but Janet is also an excellent cook.

I'd have been disgusted if Les had won. I can't believe he even made it to the final. The man cocked up packet custard for god's sake. I never forgave him for that.

Jux Sat 07-Sep-13 11:07:42

Sadly, I didn't see it.

Glad Ade won though. My bro suggested that Les may have put money into the show, and that was why he had to get into the final. But I'm sure that's a grave calumny.

SoupDragon Sat 07-Sep-13 11:11:25

I think it's the difference between cook and chef. The presentation is all part of being a chef. Both Ade & Janet are fantastic cooks but only Ade had the extra "chef" aspect really.

Poncey presentation does nothing for me though.

SoupDragon Sat 07-Sep-13 11:12:27

Thinking about it, if Janet had done the cooking and let Les put it on the plate, they would have won as a team.

LaVolcan Sat 07-Sep-13 11:37:15

And why not have a team winning? It would have spiced up the format a bit. The 'regular' Masterchef had two winners last year. They could have kept Brian in then to make it fair.

SoupDragon Sat 07-Sep-13 11:47:36

It wasn't a team contest - they all cooked separately. It would be interesting if they all started out separately and then were paired off as the contest progressed though.

If there were two winners before, it was because they were evenly matched - that wasn't the case this time.

SoupDragon Sat 07-Sep-13 11:49:23

They could, say, pair off someone with great ideas who lacks the technical ability with someone who has great ability but no original ideas.

I'm suspicious of Les's rapid transformation from bumbling idiot to good cook. IMO he should have gone out in the first round. I agree with whoever said he'd been coached.

Bakingnovice Sat 07-Sep-13 20:39:47

It was me who said he was coached. In the beginning it was obvious he'd been coached when he produced two nice puddings when asked to cook his own dish. In the blind challenge at the end of the show his two desserts (v basic ones) were a complete disaster.

Anyway, forget this show you all need to start watching junior master chef Australia. That show is bloody amazing. I'm hooked. On sky 249 I think. The challenges are unreal

Jux Sat 07-Sep-13 21:56:36

Don't have Sky sad

Relaxedandhappyperson Sat 07-Sep-13 22:17:08

They're showing on "Really" on Freeview, Jux. May be the previous series, I'm not sure, but will give you an Aussie junior masterchef experience.

The Aussie adults' series is amazing: seems to go on For Ever and I have no idea who all the myriad of presenters are.

Jux Sat 07-Sep-13 23:05:24

Oh thank you, Relaxed. I've seen it at my brother's - he has got Sky - and it is so much better.
