Anyone watching on C4?

FacebookWanker Thu 20-Jun-13 21:18:25

Yep. She's such a sensible girl.

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:19:45

i am! can anyone explain what a messianic jew is? surely a jewish person that believes in jesus is actually a christian?

ariadneoliver Thu 20-Jun-13 21:28:59

It's a mix of Jewish and Christian beliefs. Though even with the help of Wiki I can't really explain it terribly well.

ariadneoliver Thu 20-Jun-13 21:30:10

They come across as rather a lovely bunch which I wasn't expecting given that it's reality tv, I was expecting it to be quite snarky.

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:32:18

I like the mums, not sure about the dad, there is something slightly off about him

Lighthousekeeping Thu 20-Jun-13 21:40:11

Is this a series or one off?

ariadneoliver Thu 20-Jun-13 21:41:31

He must have something about him to have all those wives willing to live in that setup.

SoleSource Thu 20-Jun-13 21:42:33

He gives me the creeps

formyeyesonly Thu 20-Jun-13 21:43:10

She would thrive in school. What a lovely girl

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:44:13

He seems very controlling but in a quiet sort of way, i think he might be different when the cameras aren't there.

onetiredmummy Thu 20-Jun-13 21:44:55

It's creepy . All their happiness and decisions are geared towards keeping him happy. He controls them all. The refusal to let the girl go to school even though she desperately wants to, is wrong.

None of them smile regularly and I haven't heard one of them laugh.

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:45:09

Daddy decided a different mum should look after her? hmmm

rainbowfeet Thu 20-Jun-13 21:45:51

It's getting much weirder now with the giving babies to someone else!!!!! shock

Lighthousekeeping Thu 20-Jun-13 21:46:15

Are the "proper" Jews? If there is such a thing. My Jewish friends don't carry on like this. I bet if I ask them if they are watching this they will all say no.

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:46:19

Did birth mum sound convincing then? i'm liking dad less & less

formyeyesonly Thu 20-Jun-13 21:46:29

Wtf? Witchcraft of women?!!!

Poor margot - she had to give up being the main carer to her baby, because the baby didn't take to her dad; what an awful thing to do to her.

Rainbowinthesky Thu 20-Jun-13 21:46:34

This is horrific.

LineRunner Thu 20-Jun-13 21:47:33

Jews believe the messiah is yet to come.

Christians believe that the messiah has already arrived in the person of Jesus. Jews do not believe Jesus was/is the messiah.

'Messianic Jews' is a term for Jews who believe that the messiah is imminent, and may even be among us in the form of a living Jewish rabbi.

ariadneoliver Thu 20-Jun-13 21:47:55

Witchcraft, who knew?

<stirs cauldron>

AngelsWithSilverWings Thu 20-Jun-13 21:48:29

I don't like him one bit. The whole "adoption" situation is seriously sinister. I can't believe what I just watched and what he said about the girls birth mother.

formyeyesonly Thu 20-Jun-13 21:48:34

Controlling manipulative delusions of grandeur. Screams psychopathic to me

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:49:45

i think he has the potential to be a very cruel man. earlier in the programme he made a comment about the absent wife being on the front of a magazine, along the lines of yes its her pretty face - the tone of voice really sounded nasty

So sad sad

FadedSapphire Thu 20-Jun-13 21:50:14

As the program goes on his power hunger and superiority over his wives and daughters becomes more apparent and abhorrent.
The children are wonderful and the wives likeable. I worry for the children though and Margot was heartbreaking.

girliefriend Thu 20-Jun-13 21:50:36

Have just started watching and am already shaking my head in disbelief a lot!! shock

What is wrong with these women? How could you hand your baby over? And wouldn't health visitors etc have concerns about that set up?

Am very sad but the little girl.

pooka Thu 20-Jun-13 21:50:58

I love Ellie and her sister. I wish they could go to school - nowt wrong with homeschooling at all, but they want to go so much and I cant stand the way he talks about them becoming hard and vicious. DD is 10 and at school and isn't hardened or vicious.

Their father doesn't deserve them. I cant believe that his jealousy led to margot being removed from position of mum.So he had to break that bond in order to form the bond with ellie himself? Arsehole.

AngelsWithSilverWings Thu 20-Jun-13 21:51:47

Formyeyes - you have summed up my feelings about this man exactly.

GlitterFingers Thu 20-Jun-13 21:53:56

He is a weird freak hmm

pooka Thu 20-Jun-13 21:54:43

Initially he seemed charming. I think it's an act. I think he is selfish and manipulative. Ironically, he described the absent 'wife' as selfish. Bit of projection there.

All revolves around him. Childhood dream to have horses and train. Walter Mitty.

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 21:55:40

why do the women live with it? i can see the attraction for him but what is it for the women? he seems mean, he doesn't provide financially what has he got?

CharlieUniformNovemberTango Thu 20-Jun-13 21:57:11

She inherited a hatred of men from her mother so had to be 'given' to someone else?

That man has all the makings of a cult leader right there.

People dreamt he was a king so he had to fulfil the prophecy? Scary stuff.

pooka Thu 20-Jun-13 21:58:41

I like the women and the children are lovely.

I'd love to see them set up home together, sans the cultish dickhead.

ariadneoliver Thu 20-Jun-13 21:59:13

I have no idea nancy, it would be my idea of hell, but presumably the women liked the communal living side enough to overcome the problems.

girliefriend Thu 20-Jun-13 22:00:08

Moving to Crete? confused wtaf?!

No idea why the woman go along with it, really weird.

onetiredmummy Thu 20-Jun-13 22:00:22

I thought polygamy was illegal, isn't the man a bigamist? Why hasn't he been arrested.

PearlyWhites Thu 20-Jun-13 22:01:05

Nancy their race is Jewish their religion is Christian

CharlieUniformNovemberTango Thu 20-Jun-13 22:01:33

They aren't legally married to him other then his first wife.

ariadneoliver Thu 20-Jun-13 22:02:34

He's probably only legally married to his first wife and the rest have gone through a ceremonial marriage only, so legally just cohabiting.

CharlieUniformNovemberTango Thu 20-Jun-13 22:04:26

Yes, they said the others have taken his name and wear a ring but not sure on the ceremony side of things.

Just seen another wife has left.

Not surprised at all.

nancy75 Thu 20-Jun-13 22:05:00

Thank you to all that explained the messianic Jewish thing, although i understand it i just don't get it !

At some point they did say that only one of the women were legally married, the rest had just changed their names

PrivateBenjamin Thu 20-Jun-13 22:08:37

He sickened me, those poor little girls. I was literally shouting at the TV.

FadedSapphire Thu 20-Jun-13 22:20:35

He quite possibly has not come out of this the way he hoped to in this program.
I hope his children do get to experience the wider world [school] as they so clearly want to. Ellie [hope got name right] is an intelligent, kind girl who I hope does not get indoctrinated. She clearly loves her Dad and talks sensitively about all her Mums. Difficult to see how this will pan out....

Pixel Thu 20-Jun-13 23:36:33

I used to know them, before they moved to the farm. The ladies are indeed lovely (if downtrodden). He is a pig but knows how to turn on the charm when it suits him. I'm glad some of them are starting to see the light!

NanaNina Fri 21-Jun-13 00:47:47

I agree with most posters. The bloke is weird and I too think he is controlling (he is trying hard to come over as Mr Nice Guy) but he gave me the creeps. Ellie is a star and obviously worships her "daddy" - but this business of "giving her" to Judith as a baby was horrendous, and the poor birth mum is defending it to Ellie and saying how much "Jude" gave Ellie.

All the women looked a bit stressed I thought, and somehow "worn down" whereas he looked fit as a flea. Very selfish (and ridiculous reasons) why he won't let Ellie and Abbie go to school when they were so excited at the prospect. Wonder why one of the wives couldn't speak up for the 2 young girls. Was Judith (the "adoptive" mother of Ellie) still in the house, as I didn't think she was. Poor Margot. She seemed like she had to "hold back" from loving her own daughter, as though it wasn't allowed somehow.

MerryMarigold Fri 21-Jun-13 10:29:07

I was very intrigued when Judith said she would move to New Zealand if Margot took 'the girls' there (I wonder which others were hers). I think Judith loves the kids more than the Rabbi when it comes down to it. I also think she's done a great job with those kids, clearly loves them as her own. In some ways the many mothers thing works, just like a community brings up children, they seem so well rounded.

Who knows what will happen to them in Crete hmm. Ellie is a survivor though, and a leader. And has some great women around her. I wouldn't be surprised if the 'witchcraft' of man-hating is passed on to her though, and nothing to do with any of her mothers, but the man she adores who is living is his dream through them. She'll realise that one day, she's a sharp girl.

PointeShoes Fri 21-Jun-13 10:34:17

I thought it was shockingly obvious that the ladies were being abused. I wouldn't trust that man at all. Seriously think ss should get involved, some serious warning signs jumped out when Ellie said something along the lines of ' the descions that daddy makes are always for the good of the family / the best , even if they are wrong, he is the the head of the family like Jesus.'
Very upsetting about ellie not even knowing who her birth mother was until she was that age. Awful

NanaNina Fri 21-Jun-13 12:34:05

Did anyone else notice that the children (when we saw them briefly) seemed relatively young (some under 5's) yet most of the women looked far too old to be their mothers, so where were the mothers? Oh god it's just awful..........poor down trodden Margot. I reckon there is a hierarchy with the "wives" - think he chose who was going on TV. I suspect they are going to Crete because the programme will have raised people's curiosity which they won't want, but maybe they do, as they (HE) agreed to make the programme. Think money was at the root of that because if they were getting £1000 for the slot on morning TV, they must have got a lot for the programme.

I'm watching this and just seen him say 'Margo was anti men'. He is a loon and a controlling nob.

He needs putting down and the 'wives' and children need to get away

susiedaisy Sat 22-Jun-13 17:57:25

The witchcraft of women shock

Pixel Sat 22-Jun-13 20:25:47

Saying he doesn't want the children to go to school to become hard and vicious. What? As hard and vicious as someone who takes a three month old baby away from her mother and gives her to someone else? angry

He likes to paint himself as some kind of saint figure but I remember questions being asked when he lived in my area. There was a charity shop that I went into sometimes where I saw a few of the wives working and it closed down very suddenly. There was stuff in the local paper about it at the time but the gist is here.

Also he's not even a real rabbi. This article says

In a statement, the Board of Deputies of British Jews expressed its concern over the newspaper articles. It read, “As far as The Board is aware Philip Sharp has no recognized rabbinical training or ordination, and therefore no right to be called rabbi. His lifestyle, with multiple female partners, is inconsistent with contemporary Jewish custom and practice.

So there you have it, lies, lies and a bunch of women who fell for them. Very sad.
