Did Graham Norton just die a death in the opening sequence or is it just me?

I came looking for this - he seemed really nervous!

PipsWife Sun 12-May-13 20:22:44

Thought a few of his jokes were a bit close to the bone! confused

Or just a bit crap and badly read!

ALovelyBunchOfCoconuts Sun 12-May-13 20:31:30

is this the baftas? or is that something different? me and dh arguing over the abbreviation! grin

CatelynStark Sun 12-May-13 20:37:11

I love Olivia Coleman even more now, after that speech smile

It's the TV awards bit I think. The BAFTA film awards have happened.

Olivia is on fire right now!

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 20:48:24

Holly's dress would look better with the both sides with straps.

I love Olivia Coleman too, even more now.

Love Clare Balding too

NoelHeadbands Sun 12-May-13 20:59:04

God I adore Mel and Sue

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:03:13

Bloody el, go on Olivia!

Can't stick Miranda - that clip? you'd just move out of the bloody way wouldn't you??

Ellenora5 Sun 12-May-13 21:04:12

Just switched on now, what did Olivia Coleman get the other award for

Picturesinthefirelight Sun 12-May-13 21:05:44

Doesn't Olivia Colman come across as a really genuine person.

Dh said it struck a chord when she thanked her parents for babysitting.

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:08:09

Yes she does, I liked her before but even more now. Wonder if she's a MNetter? :-)

Clawdy Sun 12-May-13 21:10:37

Eastenders won...and that clip looked laughably awful....OMG do we need to hear Romola G talking about her vagina?

There are some fantastic women on tonight!

DebsMorgan Sun 12-May-13 21:11:14

Bafta scmafta, my dh was nominated last year - didn't win though sad

I really loved watching Olivia coleman's fabulous reaction to finding out she had won hers. Great acceptance speech too.

Picturesinthefirelight Sun 12-May-13 21:11:15

What did she just say??????!!!!!!

Love Olivia Coleman even more now!

PipsWife Sun 12-May-13 21:12:19

Love love love Olivia!
But did someone just mention stitches in her fanjo on TV!!! OMG MN honesty is spreading!

Yes abbreviation got me too didn't have to get TV guide up before writing the title on the thread

cerealqueen Sun 12-May-13 21:13:34

I can't believe what Romola Garai just said!!!!!!!!!

Good on her, I say!

SuffolkNWhat Sun 12-May-13 21:17:39

Am loving it tonight, bet they get complaints though!

SucksToBeMe Sun 12-May-13 21:20:06

Clare Balding is great. So confident and natural. Even when she wins an award she diverts the attention to others.

Unlike Bruce 'me me me' Forsyth

WipsGlitter Sun 12-May-13 21:22:40

Bad dress on Sarah Millican.

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:23:26

debs did you go? Did you have a fab frock?

PipsWife Sun 12-May-13 21:23:43

Yes, I didn't think Sarah was that big, bad dress choice hmm

She's great too though - don't spoil it Whips!

SuffolkNWhat Sun 12-May-13 21:25:48

Game of Thrones?! Siriusly?!

WipsGlitter Sun 12-May-13 21:27:29

I love her. But big norks and that sling boob style don't work. It looks too big for her. But Game of Thrones thanked Belfast - yay!!

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:27:45

I like Sarah, bet she doesn't care about clothes smile

Much prefer her to Miranda - can't take to her [ bet she loses sleep over that - not lol ]

InkleWinkle Sun 12-May-13 21:33:37

Sarah Millican just never gets it quite right with shoes & clothes (disclaimer - neither do I!)

I saw Olivia Coleman on Graham Norton show on Friday & thought she should / could be on MN.
Rude of her not to give us a clue though smile

Love it -A gay presenter, a tranny getting an award, following on from several lesbians, and other folks who wouldn't have been "allowed" on a Beeb show in the past!

Equality has come a long way.

Picturesinthefirelight Sun 12-May-13 21:44:39

Now dh's other woman has won. He loves Sheridan.

Oops though. Was that the f word.

DebsMorgan Sun 12-May-13 21:46:03

I love Sheridan Smith "I shouldn't cry, I look a knob"

Yes!

We've had vagina, shit & fuck so far!! grin

PipsWife Sun 12-May-13 21:47:18

Yep - F Word!!

Sheridan seemed truly shocked!

YoniConnect Sun 12-May-13 21:47:24

What's wrong with Terry Jones' voice??

DebsMorgan Sun 12-May-13 21:47:42

Penelope - I did go, wore a proper dress and fabulously high heels, got very drunk on champagne and kissed Tom Hardy grin

ohforfoxsake Sun 12-May-13 21:51:10

Pah Debs. My DH has one and I didn't get to go<sulks>

I liked the goody bags though.

How does normal life carry on after that! shock

NoelHeadbands Sun 12-May-13 21:52:17

Ooh get you lot with your BAFTA husbands!

PipsWife Sun 12-May-13 21:52:58

Wow i'm mixing with slebs!

NoelHeadbands Sun 12-May-13 21:53:20

My DH was hypnotised by Paul McKenna once hah! In your faces!

DebsMorgan Sun 12-May-13 21:53:54

If it makes you feel better I left without my goody bag grin. Also it was a bit poncey and far too fake for my liking really too.

ohforfoxsake Sun 12-May-13 21:54:02

How the chuff did the Olympics not win anything?

I do like Mr Palin though. What a nice man.

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:54:19

Bloody fab debs , I'd be beyond excited but trying to look dead cool, like I do this sort of thing all the time (and failing lol)

ohforfoxsake Sun 12-May-13 21:54:41

Not even the MAC make up?? shock shock

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:56:06

I'd end up looking OP-faced like VB (but fatter)

PoppyAmex Sun 12-May-13 21:56:22

I'm still complaining about "Malcolm Tucker" (Thick of It) not winning <pouts>

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 21:56:40

OP faced?? should be PO faced lol

DebsMorgan Sun 12-May-13 21:57:03

No, the ceremony was poncey and fake - goody bag was just accidentally forgotten blush.

DebsMorgan Sun 12-May-13 21:58:05

Penelope grin. I did start out trying to be all demure.

ohforfoxsake Sun 12-May-13 22:00:36

I would have had far too much to drink and tried to dance with someone from Enders I suspect. Not a good look for an overweight, middle aged Mumsnetter I suspect. I struggle to control myself on a school mums night out.wink

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 12-May-13 22:09:38

Ooh, just watched the Baftas, didn't know there was a thread.

Agree with all of the above, really.
Yup, GN did die a little, at first. But then recovered, and was lovely.
Loved Olivia C, who is of course the very definition of loveliness.
Loved what Romola Garai said about her vagina - good for her I say.
Loved Grayson Perry (and really, if you;ve not seen that series, so - it was amazing).
Loved Claire Balding, Mel and Sue (was Mel pissed?), Sheridan Smith, Helen McCrory, and the Homeland boys.

PenelopePortrait Sun 12-May-13 22:10:44

debs and fox I think these things always look fantastic and slick but maybe when you are there they are possibly a bit tedious? Although given half a chance I'd be there like a shot smile. I suspect I'd be more like fox describes though grin

Chipstick10 Sun 12-May-13 22:14:45

As Catherine Tate's nan would say "what aload of old shit" eastenders. What are they having a laugh. Mel and sue make me extremely stabby. The Paralympics!!! No way, sorry it was dreadful compared to the main event. Claire balding, go away love you.re everywhere. Made in Chelsea over I'm a celeb.!! Whatever.

LemonPeculiarJones Sun 12-May-13 22:16:15

What did Romola Garai say about her vagina?!

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 12-May-13 22:34:09

"After having my baby, I had the misfortune of 23 stitches in my vagina. I didn't think I'd be laughing for a long time."

She then went on to say something about how she was introducing the BAFTA for best comedy, or similar.

It was the way she said VAGINA (rather than something ruder, or twee), that made it so shockingly funny, IMHO.

She was presenting a comedy award and pointed out that since she had recently had 23 stitches in her vagina (following the birth of her baby) it was probably unwise for her to laugh much at anything!

HazeltheMcWitch Sun 12-May-13 22:35:12
Charliefox Sun 12-May-13 22:38:37

That after having 27 stitches in it, she never thought she'd find anything funny again!

wintera Sun 12-May-13 22:39:54

Jesus, my sympathies, 23 is a lot!

Charliefox Sun 12-May-13 22:40:05

Ha! Funny how we all watched the same thing but reported it back in 3 different ways!

ohforfoxsake Sun 12-May-13 22:41:55

You could buy tickets for it this year, but it's the party I want to go

Dominated by lots of good women this year. Good to see.

LemonPeculiarJones Sun 12-May-13 22:43:49

Ha! She's brilliant grin Amazing woman.

I also adore Julia Davies. Olivia is so lovely, but Julia should have won that one. She's flipping extraordinary.

Choccyjules Sun 12-May-13 22:45:29

Chipstick, what was so dreadful about the paralympics? I was glad to be 'introduced' to a bunch of talented people who up to then weren't getting the recognition for their efforts; plus the Last Leg (is that right?) was fab!

invicta Sun 12-May-13 22:47:00

Did Ant and Dec not win this year?

teejwood Sun 12-May-13 22:50:56

I really enjoyed the BAFTA's. Much though I love Stephen Fry, I enjoyed Graham presenting tonight. The Tom Daley gag was really close to the bone but also very funny - and in fact quite close to some of the threads on here last summer!!

The thing that struck me this year is that there have been so many amazing dramas, documentaries and comedies over the past twelve months. For a comparatively small nation, we're bloody spoiled.

DP and I were genuinely torn about who we wanted to win in a lot of the categories.

Loved the great ladies tonight - national treasure aka Olivia C, Sheridan S, Lady Balding, Mel & Sue, Romola and her vag, Helen McCrory and Anne Marie Duff. Brilliant actresses/presenters.

Delighted to see Ben Wishaw win, but gutted for Sean Bean who was fantastic. And Peter Capaldi was robbed when Steve Coogan won.

And while we're at it, Girls winning the international award ahead of The Bridge??

That said, the C4 Paralympic team deserved their BAFTA for making the paralympics as unmissable as the Olympics imho. And that takes NOTHING away from the team who presented the Olympics - that also was fabulous but, let's face it, an easier sell for mass audiences.

squoosh Sun 12-May-13 22:57:50

Much preferred Graham Norton as a presenter (once he got past his intro nerves), Stephen Fry fancies himself to a yawnsome degree.

Personally I was delighted GoT beat the Olympics thingy.
Olivia Colman is a brilliant actress.
Peter Capaldi was robbed.
Ripper St was robbed.

Made in Chelsea and Alfie Moon cheapened the atmosphere a bit.

All in all qite a good show. Helen McCrory's 'tranny' reference was a bit ill judged!

squoosh Sun 12-May-13 22:58:22

Oh and loved Romola's vag gag!

squoosh Sun 12-May-13 22:59:21

Rebecca Hall should have won instead of Sheridan Smith. I don't think SS is a particularly talented actor.

LadyBeagleEyes Sun 12-May-13 23:02:14

So lovely to see Michael Palin get his award.
Like Terry Jones said, he really is the nicest man in the world.

waikikamookau Sun 12-May-13 23:06:00

only saw the second part , started to guess, if I haven't seen it, it had won.
love Olivia colman and delighted for her smile

wintera Sun 12-May-13 23:13:04

I love Olivia Coleman but can't help thinking that she got two this year because there was a media and twitter storm last year when she failed to be recognised for Tyrannosaur. This happens with awards ceremonies all the bleeding time! Like when Kate Winslet won two golden globes a few years ago because she didn't get the awards she deserved for Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind. Then the powers that be over-compensate usually the year after. Wish they'd just get it right the first time.

every year I watch it and say never again..and then I watch it and am disappointed again. Graham Norton was bloody awful. And as much as I think Olivia Coleman deserved her awards I thought her acceptance speech both times appeared 'over acted ' with the ooh I didnt expect it or prepare anything ! If youre nominated surely it goes without saying that youre in with a chance of winning and should have something prepared!!! Just saying......

Chipstick10 Mon 13-May-13 00:02:16

Olivia coleman s acceptance speech was cringe.
The vagina gag was attention seeking crap.
Ant and dec were robbed

squoosh Mon 13-May-13 00:03:27

I wish someone would rob Ant and Dec, and never return them.

Mrsrobertduvall Mon 13-May-13 06:41:07

I only caught the last half hour.
Alan Carr......shite show.
Game of thrones...never heard of it.
Sheridan Smith, loved Mrs Biggs but hate the fake "oh I've won, surely not me, I am not worthy so I'll swear" speech.

Lov Michael Palin...such a lovely unassuming man. And his comment about Terry Jones..."thanks for those kind words, they could be your last" was priceless.

And I wanted Matt leblanc to say " How you doing".

LIZS Mon 13-May-13 08:36:12

OC's dress made a definite bid for freedom ! She needs to visit S & B - I've got this gorgeous taffeta dress but it just won't stay put , ideas please ! No Miranda this year ?

DeepRedBetty Mon 13-May-13 08:46:34

The only award we thoroughly disagreed with was Alan Carr. It would take a major personality transplant to make him funny.

I strongly suspect Olivia Coleman is a MNetter and if she isn't she should be. And Romola Garai too.

Eliza22 Mon 13-May-13 08:52:21

Love Olivia Coleman and Julia Davies, a tough call, that one.

However, all the "I've won, I didn't expect it, I'm a mess, I wish someone else had won, so I didn't need to speak confused (Ben Whishaw)" really, really gets on my nerves. Pleeeease, you've been nominated and attended an award ceremony. There's a 1 in 5 chance, you might win. I had to shut Sheridan Smith up. I just couldn't watch her. Thank God for live pause and fast forward!

Michael Palin. So well deserved. That's how to conduct yourself. All you "lovies" take note.

squoosh Mon 13-May-13 10:15:19

Ben Whishaw seemed 'refreshed'.

Chipstick10 Mon 13-May-13 11:14:10

Very disappointed with Olivia, came across as a Lovie and I didn't expect that. Sheridan was very gwenie. Yuk.

Clawdy Mon 13-May-13 13:58:38

Yes,I like Olivia and Ben W, and didn't mind Sheridan S. but their gushing, mock shocked, gasping speeches were cringe-making. As if they weren't really expecting it...!!

wintera Mon 13-May-13 14:04:20

Aww I did think that Ben W looked genuinely shocked though to be fair. He probably thought Derek Jacobi was a shoe in. He very much deserved it though, his Richard II was wonderful.

HazeltheMcWitch Mon 13-May-13 14:07:00

Awww, I LOVE Ben W.
I thought that he is just genuinely quite shy, and yes, probably thought that Sir Derek had it in the bag. Thinking of it, Ben doesn't do much press or promo stuff, so I think he's just one of those that is confident etc when acting, but would prefer not to be in the spotlight when he's not.

waikikamookau Mon 13-May-13 14:20:26

and i hate the way the cameras focus on the losers who must look pleased for their opponents the winners

waikikamookau Mon 13-May-13 14:21:09

how did graham accept the award for the entertainment show, that his tv show won?

PoppyAmex Mon 13-May-13 14:49:11

"and i hate the way the cameras focus on the losers who must look pleased for their opponents the winners"

Anne Reid didn't - in fact she was shaking her head looking mighty pissed off when cry-baby actress won (and then tried to disguise it) grin

LadyBeagleEyes Mon 13-May-13 14:53:48

I think the best bit is when they focus on the losers pretending to smile.
How the fuck did Made In fucking Chelsea win an award?
And East Enders?

waikikamookau Mon 13-May-13 14:57:27

yeah, when they must look pleased, they really have act then aren't they? grin

PoppyAmex Mon 13-May-13 15:05:47

I was pleased that "Made in Chelsea" won, just because I got to see Alan Sugar looking seriously annoyed grin

Mrsrobertduvall Mon 13-May-13 17:23:33

I want a loser to stand up and say "I was robbed!"
That would add a bit of drama.
Or launch into "It should've been me".

Anne Reid did look pissed off.

PoppyAmex Mon 13-May-13 17:26:37

Like this?

"am gonna lett'ya finish..." grin

Mrsrobertduvall Mon 13-May-13 17:34:19

oh he is such an arse.

But yes, Sean Bean legging it up the steps and decking Ben do dah would be interesting.

squoosh Mon 13-May-13 17:45:20

I thought Sean Bean looked most handsome last night. All tanned and grinning.
