A question about 'Friends' - yes I should be over it by now

...but I've been pondering because I'm pregnant myself. Is there a moment when Phoebe discovers she's carrying triplets? Have I missed this? I think I've seen every episode and I'm sure it just goes from her finding out she's pregnant to suddenly referring to three babies.....

ScumbagCollegeDropout Fri 08-Mar-13 22:52:50

Yes there is when she goes for her first scan smile

FamiliesShareGerms Fri 08-Mar-13 22:53:08

I think because it was IVF she finds out that there's three at the same time she is told she's pregnant, but I could be making that up!

Flojobunny Fri 08-Mar-13 22:54:19

What scum said.

LaalRatty Fri 08-Mar-13 23:14:18

There's an episode called the one with the free porn. She finds out during her scan. This episode isn't always shown but it was on Comedy Central recently. Hth

HavingALittleFaithBaby Fri 08-Mar-13 23:16:40

D'you know, I don't think I've ever seen it! Maybe they didn't show it on E4 either? I will have to search for it! Thanks smile

akaemmafrost Fri 08-Mar-13 23:27:31

Phoebe comes home from IVF does a pregnancy test and it's positive. That's actually always really bugged me.

DearPrudence Fri 08-Mar-13 23:28:18

Ratty is right. It's The One With The Free Porn - see the IMDB episode guide

Frank has to quit refrigerator college because of all the babies. (DS is currently watching this series on DVD.)

LaalRatty Sat 09-Mar-13 11:45:37

Phoebe's hissy fit in this episode is hilarious. Relaxicab or Relaxitaxi? grin

mrsjay Sat 09-Mar-13 12:17:10

I watched that 1 the other day well dd did she is obsessed and never EVER tires of watching it hmm what the others said

coemedy central is the new home of friends sigh

FiteFuaite Sat 09-Mar-13 12:21:07

Just elbowing myself into your thread,Havingalittlefaithbaby, but does anyone remember which episode is the one where Phoebe finds out there is no Santa?

LadyBeagleEyes Sat 09-Mar-13 12:45:34

I'm watching it at the moment, it's the early episodes.
Phoebe has just met David who's off to Minsk and Ross has just got Marcel the monkey
It still makes me laugh I'm sad aren't I.

cocolepew Sat 09-Mar-13 12:57:04

DD aged 11, watches it on CC everytime its on, I must have seen every episode 10 times by now.
Still makes me laugh too grin

LaalRatty Sat 09-Mar-13 13:06:22

I love Friends and can safely say my knowledge on it is legendary. I did that quiz that was going around and got every answer right. 101 Yeah baby!

VictorTango Sat 09-Mar-13 13:10:29

ooh what quiz?

HavingALittleFaithBaby Sat 09-Mar-13 21:12:05

Yes the whole pregnant within hours of IVF gets my goat! And the Monica/Chandler infertility story line though at least Monica doesn't 'miraculously' fall pregnant anyway!

I've seen a bit online of that episode and I really don't think I've ever seen it! Might have to hire that season!

ShowOfHands Sat 09-Mar-13 21:24:01

Phoebe comments about how she's going to have three full grown babies walking around her in a few months and says it's going to be like one of those log rides when they just come shooting out.

She breaks it to Frank and Alice by saying something like 'you know when you're walking down the street and you see three people and you think, hey that's nice'.

Frank yells 'I finally got my band!'

I remember the episode well.

I read a post on Facebook the other day which said
" Monica and chandlers twins would be nine now
Emma would be eleven
Phoebes triplets would be fourteen
Ben would be eighteen"

How old do i feel now grin

StiffyByng Mon 11-Mar-13 12:50:22

Many years ago I was lucky enough to see Friends being recorded while I was in LA. Unfortunately it was the one where Phoebe had her triplets, which I think is a contender for least realistic birth on TV ever!

valiumredhead Mon 11-Mar-13 16:03:04

Ds who is 11 LOVES Friends and I am sort of re watching bits with him. I had no idea there were so many references to porn, quite shocked really, although I do realise that it's not aimed at 11 year olds grin

FeckOffCup Tue 12-Mar-13 12:34:16

I always wondered why Monica and Chandler were so quick to go straight from their fertility issues being diagnosed to okay so we'll adopt then. Surely you would try fertility drugs or IVF first given how desperate Monica had always been to carry a baby of her own and they could surely afford IVF as two young professionals with good jobs?

merlottits Tue 12-Mar-13 12:39:41

Feckoffcup she had an 'inhospitable uterus' remember? They both had fertility problems and would never conceive even with fertility treatment. Chandler wanted donor sperm but Monica said no if she could have his baby, they would adopt.

<Friends nerd>

merlottits Tue 12-Mar-13 12:40:30

couldn't

FeckOffCup Tue 12-Mar-13 12:44:03

Surely if she could have conceived and carried a baby with donor sperm then she could have carried an embryo which had been conceived outside the womb with that procedure where they inject the low motility sperm directly into the egg (ICSI?) though, although I am no expert and don't really know what inhospitable uterus is. It just seemed a bit weird that they were told they could keep trying but it would likely never happen without seemingly any mention of any other fertility treatments they could try to increase their chances.

HavingALittleFaithBaby Tue 12-Mar-13 16:47:28

Yes they abandoned any idea of fertility treatment ridiculously quickly (and adopted oh so quickly too). 'Inhospitable uterus' hmm they never looked at the causes of Chandler's slow swimmers either - DH had that but it had an underlying cause and was reversed!

But then I find all infertility story lines are a bit crap on TV.

valiumredhead Wed 13-Mar-13 09:26:00

You can adopt very quickly in America ime.

Chubfuddler Wed 13-Mar-13 09:33:45

The only thing about friends that ever annoyed me was that they retrospectively made Richard a creepy arsehole. He wasn't, he was lovely and perfect.

ThingummyBob Wed 13-Mar-13 09:34:06

I love friends but have never ever thought of it in terms of the issues contained within the storylines. It was/is humourous (sp?) escapism for me.

As 'real' as an episode of doctor who grin

valiumredhead Wed 13-Mar-13 09:35:08

YY Richard was lovely and definitely not creepy, he was perfect <sigh>

hellsbells76 Wed 13-Mar-13 09:39:07

That whole adoption storyline where they basically took the piss out of the poor, thick white trash girl who was giving them her baby stunk.

There wasn't a single realistic birth in Friends either. How the hell did the doctor not notice Rachel's baby was breech, especially when she was coming in and VEing her every 5 minutes? VB of triplets with one doctor in attendance?! In America? Pull the other...

LaalRatty Wed 13-Mar-13 15:14:48

I loved Friends but the following really annoyed me.

Rachel and Monica's nipples.
The way they treated each other and strangers at times. (Rachel abandoning Phoebe to fly to London, then thinking it acceptable to go on the honeymoon of the person she was hoping to oust, Chandler and any woman except Monica, Rachel keeping quiet when her boss viciously bullied Sophie...)
Rachel's unrealistic transition from ditzy waitress to fashion powerhouse.
Joey's lack of money in the early days. It never stopped him from doing anything. Same for Phoebe and Rachel actually.
Unrealistic births. Carol giving birth to Ben made me cross.
Unrealistic weddings. Ok so Joey declares you man and wife so you must be married right? No register to sign or anything?
Invisible babies.
Phoebe thinking she is stunning. The amount of make up and lighting required towards the end was horrific.
Monica and Joey. You knew it was them. But they change completely from series 1 - 10. Courteney Cox was stunning until she succumbed to LA fakery.
Richard pretending not to recognise Monica when she knocked on his door. He's best friends with her dad. Why wouldn't he know her?
The attitude to work. They were hardly there. When they were they were fucking about.
Celebrity cameos. I don't mind Brad Pitt but there were bits of scenery on better form than him.
The blase attitude towards porn, strippers, lapdancers etc.
Emily. I hated how she became the bad guy even though she did nothing wrong.

valiumredhead Wed 13-Mar-13 15:35:52

hells that is something I didn't realise the first time I watched it, but I watched the very last episode and was quite horrified tbh.

valiumredhead Wed 13-Mar-13 15:38:06

I disagree about Emily - I want to throttle Helen Baxendale in everything I see her in grin

LaalRatty Wed 13-Mar-13 16:39:12

Tbh, not an Emily fan but bloody hell could they have been more scathing about her character? Tries to salvage the remnants of her marriage and still comes off as the bad guy? Gotta love the writing on Friends. FWIW I hated her in Cold Feet too grin

valiumredhead Wed 13-Mar-13 16:40:39

I hate her in everything grin

ChocsAwayInMyGob Wed 13-Mar-13 16:54:06

Valium I completely and utterly agree with you about Helen bloody Baxendale. It ruined every scene she was in. My cat shows more emotion than she does. She is wooden and has an annoying face.

AnneEyhtMeyer Wed 13-Mar-13 18:33:26

The best bit of Cold Feet was when Helen Baxendale's character was killed. I cheered.

ChocsAwayInMyGob Thu 14-Mar-13 09:12:05

Out of all the outstasnding actresses the UK had to offer, they picked Baxendale. Honestly!

Also- I have been out with two people who think she is gorgeous. Why? Seriously, why?

I always wonder about the Monica and Chandler infertility. Everytime it's on I say to DH couldn't they try IVF/ICSI? If they can try donor sperm or a surrogate then surely they could.

There's also inconsistencies with how they started off the characters in the first series and how they are later on.

ChocsAwayInMyGob Fri 15-Mar-13 12:46:17

I always thought Rachel was incredibly selfish to just decide she was taking her daughter to Paris without giving Ross, the father, a moment's thought or consultation.

FamiliesShareGerms Fri 15-Mar-13 13:10:00

I thought that they never really knew what to do with Emma beyond giving them a pregnancy story line for a season. She comes and goes, with vague references to her "being with my parents", but otherwise largely invisible.

ChocsAwayInMyGob Fri 15-Mar-13 13:32:48

Yes they do a lot on TV don't they? The writers like the drama of a birth but not the humdrum of everyday life with a child. They just don't seem to know how to write them in once they've done a shouty 20 minute birth scene.

HavingALittleFaithBaby Mon 08-Apr-13 17:20:55

The one with the porn is on Comedy Central right now! smile shock

marjproops Mon 08-Apr-13 19:12:42

on E4 there were LOADS of lines that were edited. hearing them for 1st time unedited on CC. bits ive never seen before, and ive seen friends like a million times.

cant stand Rachel. and the whole Mark at bloomingdales thing i never watch again. boooooring.

and the rich guy, pete. wheres his neck?!?

richard and his simon cowell trousers. eeeewwww.

stupid episode just to get Brad Pitt in it.

some episodes were brill but others......

ChocsAwayInMyGob Wed 10-Apr-13 14:40:08

Agree marje. Some episodes were scriptwriting master classes i.e The One Where Everyone Finds Out, but others, like the one where Chandler was watching a shark documentary were utterly dire.

It's still a brilliant series though.

marjproops Wed 10-Apr-13 16:59:55

oh yes, wont ever stop watching it. even if i give it a miss for a few days its comforting to know its right there when you want it! same with frasier and MAsh.
