Am I the only one who cannot watch Sir Brian Cox because he is creepy?

I just cannot listen to his voice. I've just had to ask DH to change the channel because I was getting all irritated.

Am I alone?

You mean professor Brian Cox?

UnrequitedSkink Sun 24-Feb-13 21:17:07

No you are completely NOT alone! I spent ages last night trying to explain to DH how creepy I find him! Dh was not very impressed, he thinks Prof Cox is wonderful. Blech.

UnrequitedSkink Sun 24-Feb-13 21:18:16

His voice is weird, his skin is too smooth... And women think he's some kind of sex symbol. It's very odd.

peeriebear Sun 24-Feb-13 21:18:56

I think he's interesting and knowledgeable, but very wet and Frank Spencery.

member Sun 24-Feb-13 21:19:20

That's why I'm on the iPad - dh seems to think the sun shines out of his arse

MrsBucketxx Sun 24-Feb-13 21:19:26

he isnt creepy, just very boring I struggle to keep awake watching every week.

AngelWreakinHavoc Sun 24-Feb-13 21:19:49

I think he is lovely blush not sure what it is about him.

His wife is a MNetter.

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 21:22:03

yes professor, i knew he had a fancy name.

i like science, i enjoy what he says, but I wish he would hire somebody else to say it.

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 21:22:53

oh i'm sure his wife would find my DH creepy. grin

akaemmafrost Sun 24-Feb-13 21:24:07

Someone on my FB has just said they definitely WOULD!

I was hmm really?

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 21:27:16

emsibub Sun 24-Feb-13 21:28:13

He's not creepy!! He's dishy! He seems like such a free spirit

emsibub Sun 24-Feb-13 21:29:15

I definitely would!

UnrequitedSkink Sun 24-Feb-13 21:29:59

I read an article once written by his wife about what it was like living with a man and knowing other women would be all over him given half a chance. I found it really interesting, although I am unlikely to ever be in that position. wink

Trazzletoes Sun 24-Feb-13 21:31:34

Heehee I thought you meant the "other" Brian Cox grin now I find HIM creepy!

Cotapaxi Sun 24-Feb-13 21:32:01

I love his programmes, very interesting and he is pretty inoffensive and easy on the eye.

JakeBullet Sun 24-Feb-13 21:32:44

Oh I definitely would toogrin .

His wife is a MNer you sau?

blushI am so sorry for lusting over your DHgrin .

JakeBullet Sun 24-Feb-13 21:33:56

His programmes are fab though. Have LOVED this series. ...bought the book and recorded every episode. Fascinating stuff.

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 21:36:38

Really? His voice doesn't make your hands go all claw-y?

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsase Sun 24-Feb-13 21:40:26

I can listen to him on the radio and not be annoyed, but I can't watch him on the telly.

I imagine he'd be a feathery stroker (apologies to Mrs Cox).

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 21:41:40

grin at feathery stroker

<barges on to thread>

Do you mean Mr Gia?

MagzFarqharson Sun 24-Feb-13 21:42:49

'Hi, it's me - Professor Briiiiiiiiian Cox. I'm just like you. . . . but a bit more science-y!' Sketch from V.I.P. - can't find link sorry.

But absolutely not taking the piss cos I fancy brainy geysers!

rufussmum Sun 24-Feb-13 21:43:14

Am watching now...I think it's the lips. And the stupid pudding-bowl haircut. And the grubby polo shirt. David Attenborough he ain't. (I have been in love with DA for aeons).

I would! But I go for brains not brawn! His passion for physics is infectious!

StephaniePowers Sun 24-Feb-13 21:43:42

I think he's great.
I read his wife somewhere talking about how he still has dirty pants and leaves the lying around, and just thought, oh dear, that's a little badly handled. So what if women like him? None of this is real to them.

MagzFarqharson Sun 24-Feb-13 21:44:51

'feathery stroker' <splutters into cup of tea>

Kveta Sun 24-Feb-13 21:45:50

I really want to like him, but his voice is like nails on a blackboard. dh adores him though, so is watching alone downstairs. Shame, because the programme looks fascinating, but I just can't listen to him.

Look, his wife is a mumsnetter.

Do you honestly think it's nice to talk about him like this when she could very well be reading?

Cotapaxi Sun 24-Feb-13 21:47:15

rufussmum, I adore David Attenborough too, he is my biggest hero. Brian is good but will never be a patch on our National Treasure.

Cotapaxi Sun 24-Feb-13 21:48:33

freddie, it's kind of what you sign up to when you become famous sadly, people having opinions on you is just part of it. I'm sure she can handle it and half of us are saying he's lovely anyway grin!

NobbyClark Sun 24-Feb-13 21:50:11

Well I think he is great. So clever. Cool man.

Well yes, but she's a member on here. Imagine if it was your husband. Have some fricking thought for her.

Cotapaxi Sun 24-Feb-13 21:52:31

Are you her or his mum?

Yes, there are loads of famous folks/relatives of famous folks on here!! Should we not speak about anyone?? The ethos of this place is that it is anonymous. If she chose to reveal her identity then more fool her I'm afraid!! Until I see the wedding pic, it merely words on a page, which may or may not be true!

btw I'm Katie price grin

MagzFarqharson Sun 24-Feb-13 21:57:25

Surely it would be 'profbriancisagreatshag' or 'DSprofbriancisagreatshagorsoi'mleadtobelieve' posting?

BrianCoxandTheTempleofDOOM Sun 24-Feb-13 21:57:56

Ok so I may have voiced similar concerns to the OP on a thread the other week and his wife may have turned up....that was awkward she didn't notice me or treated me with the disdain that I deserved

OP, I am right there with you. When I became BrianCox, I was BrianCoxHasScaryHair and have subsequently been BrianCoxHasScaryTeeth (or similar...can't recall) then I diversifed to HasSmellySox and since then have dropped the meanness and taken his name as my own grin

I may now change it to HasAnAnnoyingVoice wink

He's clever and all that, obviously and I am sure he is a truly wonderful human being/father/husband/son etc but.....he is on the telly so I can comment and he does grate somewhat.

OMG did you all not see my thread last week?? grin

off to find it hold on

BrianCoxandTheTempleofDOOM Sun 24-Feb-13 21:58:40

oh - it was freddies thread actually.

rufussmum Sun 24-Feb-13 22:03:50

If my DH made as much money as BC I wouldn't mind what a bunch of mums thought about him.

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 22:18:46

very funny thread. sounds like his mrs has a good sense of humour about it all. it doesn't change the fact that 50% of adults in my household find him creepy and unbearable, while 50% find him informative and engaging.

specialsubject Sun 24-Feb-13 22:30:17

I neither fancy him nor find him creepy. That's probably because I am no longer twelve years old, which is the right age for that kind of conversation.

tonight's episode wandered off topic in places, and he should know better than to try to dumb down photosynthesis. Some of the other episodes have been enthralling, and it is a clever way of presenting science as a unified subject.

good to have factual TV that doesn't feature shrieking, talentless harpies, ignorant journalists or brain-dead petrol heads.

I find him fascinating and just love his ability to communicate, which he clearly has such a passion for. Not bothered by his voice or clothes, just glad we're getting programmes like that broadcast.

Davros Sun 24-Feb-13 22:46:30

I think he's great. I love The Infinite Monkey Cage

nevergoogle Sun 24-Feb-13 22:53:38

oh i'm sure i'm missing out on the science, i love science. but i cannot watch it and don't find it enjoyable because of his voice and mannerisms. shame really.

BrianCoxandTheTempleofDOOM Sun 24-Feb-13 22:58:26

same here never

The topic is interesting, he is unwatchable IMO.

In the same way I can't bear to watch Piers Morgan, his whiney voice and smug face.

Although with Piers I am sure he is as smug in real life and much less intelligent wink

xigris Sun 24-Feb-13 23:02:19

Most annoying voice ever and soooo smug for one who was in D:ream! grin

Beamur Sun 24-Feb-13 23:03:36

freddiemisagreatshag - I can't believe there are people on MN who missed your legendary thread about Prof. Cox.
I reckon he's great on the telly and my little girl goes all hands in the air and 'wow' about science when he's on so he can't be that bad.

Beamur - it's official. I Am A Prat. grin <wears badge with pride>

BeckyBrandon Sun 24-Feb-13 23:05:07

his grin is a little creepy..

tribpot Sun 24-Feb-13 23:16:03

I do love the VIP sketches "stay on me, Gary". Charlie Brooker did a good piss take this week as well where he had his faux-commentators talking about how it seemed like he was on a week long acid trip and someone had been filming him talking about the chickens disturbing the cosmos and stuff.

Perhaps as a proper science boffin his stuff works better when it's tempered with some TV-pizzazz, like the recent FANTASTIC programme with Dara Ó Briain.

tribpot Sun 24-Feb-13 23:20:14
MagzFarqharson Sun 24-Feb-13 23:31:29

Haha thanks tribpot - didn't want to wake dd up to ask her how to find the link grin

VBisme Sun 24-Feb-13 23:40:59

Really not a fan, he's smug and his voice is extremely odd.

Also I went to see D:Ream at Birmingham uni in the 90's and they were just dreadful. (and their parents were doing the merchandising).

Startail Mon 25-Feb-13 00:04:12

I don't mind him, nor does my 15yo science loving DD1. My 12yo DD2 agrees totally with the OP she can't stand him.

I sort of see what they mean he is a bit soppy and ingratiating, he does sort of creep into your head.

Mind you DD2's ideal man is the Merlin night with muscles and sleeveless armor.

Startail Mon 25-Feb-13 00:04:43

Knight, opps

MrsMymble Mon 25-Feb-13 14:28:31

I like him. But neither myself nor DH can see him on telly any more without having to say 'keep it on me Gary!' grin

cowmop Mon 25-Feb-13 14:40:00

I like the show a lot and find it interesting, but my mind wanders all the time and I end up missing the important bits. Nine pm is just too late for my little brain.

There was a very funny sketch on Charlie Brookers programme on Friday night.

MrsBucketxx Mon 25-Feb-13 16:12:47

I'm the same cowmop.

EstherRancid Mon 25-Feb-13 16:26:39

i'm the same as you cowmop but my mind wanders onto norty fings - DH loves PBC as it gets us both int'mood wink

as for PCSs DW - you lucky cah! grin

Cooroo Tue 26-Feb-13 13:47:41

Another fan here, but my OH is allergic so I record and watch at odd moments. Am also a big Infinite Monkey Cage fan. We saw Robin Ince live and he was brilliant.
