The lovely Michel Roux Jr is bringing back the Food & Drink show

(61 Posts)

He is fab and an example to other chefs in how to behave. No need for all that sweary nonsense. It looks like Tom Kerridge is also going to co-present and he is also lovely. I will be watching. It's starting next Monday on BBC2.

No Jilly Goolden though. sad

She was a character wasn't she! smile. There is a lady doing the drink segment again, but I can't recall her name.

Sparklingbrook Wed 30-Jan-13 13:09:47

No me neither. They were both on TV yesterday or the day before. Poor Jilly-I liked her.

I suppose they've gone for a complete revamp as its been X years since the show was on. I am very pleased with the choice of chefs though.

Sparklingbrook Wed 30-Jan-13 13:24:30

yes, I am going to have a watch. Not a great cook myself but like a good foodie programme, and it will make a change from Jamie/Nigella/Gordon et al.

Agree. With those chefs you've mentioned, I think they have become caricatures of themselves and the food is sidelined a little, so it will be an interesting watch. DH likes cooking, but gets annoyed by the usual tv chefs, however, he likes Michel so may watch with me.

I like Sunday Brunch on C4 at the moment, Simon Rimmer is great and doesn't take himself too seriously.

Thanks, I'll check that out too.

noddyholder Wed 30-Jan-13 16:00:00

The telegraph has some recipe books from him this weekend free!

Southeastdweller Wed 30-Jan-13 19:45:08

This is well overdue!

I`m so excited, loved Food and Drink, use to watch it with my parents every week when I was younger, and I loooovvvve Michel, nom nom grin

So did I Dreams, except then I wasn't interested in the wine, but now.....grin

HappyFi Thu 31-Jan-13 09:12:24

Yes I can't wait. Michel is such a dish wink
The new Jilly Goolden is apparently a much younger version of Jilly now (probably similar age to Jilly when she started on the show) and her name is Kate Goodman.
Apparently she is Northern so not as "Jolly Hockey Sticks" as Jilly.
Here's a blog about her from Guardian Wine Columnist Fiona Becket:

Oodsigma Thu 31-Jan-13 09:17:28

Saw this advertised the other day but missed when its starting.

It starts next Monday at 8pm on BBC2

Thanks for the link Happy. Just read it. Kate looks like a good replacement for Jilly.

Excellent my DCs love him. They love to watch him cook, and chat about what they would eat in his restaurant. Then they get the play doh out and make up their own creations! So I guess I'll be watching this with them!

Chrysanthemum I sit my DSs in front of Masterchef, which thankfully DS1 does enjoy although DS2 (funnily enough at 6MO) is nonplussed, telling them what fab Michelin chefs they will be one day, cooking Michelin meals for their poor old mother. I am hoping at least one of them will do this [hopeful face emoticon]

Davros Fri 01-Feb-13 08:35:43

I'm a bit concerned that' lovely Michel is turning into a TV person and will lose his authority as a top working chef. I don't want him dumbed down!

Little - they may do!

Davros I don't want him dumbed down either. I'm hoping he sticks to his own style of cooking as that is what appeals to me, that he isn't like Jamie, Nigella etc.

JiltedJohnsJulie Fri 01-Feb-13 14:14:04

Thank you for that. He is so lovely, think its the eyes and I used to love the show before, will watch with interest even if it does clash with Corrie.

IndridCold Fri 01-Feb-13 14:31:01

Hooray!! My absolutely fav food show just got better!

It's long overdue isn't it. So glad they have Michel and Tom rather than one of those other tv chefs.

Back off! Michel is mine grin

Tom Kerridge is lovely too, I'd love to take DH to his pub.

My friend's sister lives 5mins from The Hand & Flowers and she goes there once a month. envy

Oodsigma Mon 04-Feb-13 08:41:00

It's on BBC2 tonight, although it's on at 8.30pm (the other day I read it as 8pm).

Sallster Mon 04-Feb-13 12:32:13

Well back in the day when I was a very junior TV Production Runner, I used to work on the original Food and Drink with Jilly and Oz organsing the wine tastings in our board room! I am pleased to say they were both absolutely lovely people and we had a ball, especially doing the Champagne at Christmas! One of my claims to fame is that Oz taught me how to open a bottle of fizz!!

You lucky thing Sallster! What a great job. envy

Sallster Mon 04-Feb-13 14:07:33

Yep, that bit of it was great - sadly there were also a lot of things that weren't such fun!!

Well I am ridiculously excited, I am so in loove with Michel, but I have a major soft spot for Tom as well, he has the most lovely face. Everything tonight will revolve around it.

Southeastdweller Mon 04-Feb-13 19:40:48

Tonight's the night everyone!

gailforce1 Mon 04-Feb-13 20:43:07

That roast looks superb!

Loving it! They're both so nice and seem to get on.

JiltedJohnsJulie Mon 04-Feb-13 20:45:32

Yummy so far, and they food looks good too grin.

gailforce1 Mon 04-Feb-13 20:53:50

Bug burger anyone?!

WingDefence Mon 04-Feb-13 20:54:04

Isn't it a great programme?! Except I didn't realise Tom was quite that large when I saw him on Masterchef the Professionals and he makes MRJr look absolutely tiny shock I do think he's great though and they make a great pair.

Aren't Michel's teeth blinking white? grin

Southeastdweller Mon 04-Feb-13 21:00:15

On a fast day so it would have been torture for me to watch this but looking forward to watching it on iPlayer tomorrow!

JiltedJohnsJulie Mon 04-Feb-13 21:02:29

No thanks gail, had 2 for tea and just couldn't manage another.

Wing they are good together aren't they, if slightly comical looking. Love the woman who is suggesting wines too.

Now for Dancing on the Edge.....

I get the feeling the lovely Michel has a guest presenter each week, as next week it looks like Mary Berry.

JiltedJohnsJulie Mon 04-Feb-13 21:06:57

South did the fast diet for a while last year and am going to start it again soon, once I've got over this bloody chest infection. Can completely see why watching the food and drink programme would be an issue on a fast day.

Did you get The Fast Diet when it was the kindle daily deal on Saturday?

Southeastdweller Mon 04-Feb-13 21:28:32

Hi jilted No, because I'd already bought it. It's working a treat so far but I can't stress enough how important it is to keep busy on fast days and probably avoiding any food and drink shows! Counting down the hours now untill I watch this tomorrow night with dinner and a glass or two of wine...

WingDefence Tue 05-Feb-13 08:00:59

Dreams I think you're right as it did say 'guest presenter -Tom Kerridge' in the closing credits.

I thought it was really interesting and fun although I couldn't watch the mealworm burger section yuck

IndridCold Tue 05-Feb-13 08:41:04

I really enjoyed it, but thought it felt a bit rushed at only half an hour. Surely it used to be an hour long in the old days? I would have been quite happy to have had more (even though I was on a fast day too).

I was on a fast day yesterday too Southeast so didn't dare watch. I have only just now watched this. I enjoyed it too, but one hour would have been better than half. Tom and Michel are lovely. I liked Kate too.

Sassee Tue 05-Feb-13 18:07:50

Loved this. Tom Kerridge is my favourite, I'm desperate to go to hid pub and stay.

Loved his 3 types of cider, sleeping cider, dancing cider and fighting cider!

Yes, Tom is very down to earth!

Davros Wed 06-Feb-13 10:26:13

Oooh, I don't know. I watched it last night and thought it quite bland. Needs more seasoning despite MRJr and TK

I think if it was on for one hour instead that would improve things.

Quenelle Wed 06-Feb-13 13:27:48

It was a bit bland.

I was disappointed in the wine bit. The woman (forgotten her name) didn't give details of any of the drinks (I assume she couldn't for some reason) I'd have liked her to suggest a good Riesling to try and where to buy it etc. Like they do on Saturday Kitchen.

Ruffello Wed 06-Feb-13 17:27:05

I wasn't keen on the wine woman either. She's definitely no Jilly!

Southeastdweller Wed 06-Feb-13 20:49:07

It was all quite contrived in the way that BBC food shows are these days.

30 minutes just isn't long enough for me and I agree that Kate is no match for Jilly.

It's available to watch on iPlayer for another month.

WildThong Wed 06-Feb-13 20:53:49

I agree quenelle, very disappointed and not a patch on Saturday Kitchen

Oodsigma Wed 06-Feb-13 21:35:31

Just caught up now. Agreeing with other posters. Blokes good but the wine woman a bit weak, needs more enthusiasm

Southeastdweller Wed 06-Feb-13 21:42:44

Forgot to add that I would have liked stockists to have been mentioned..

Davros Thu 07-Feb-13 10:25:23

I bet they didn't gi e the wine info. E cause they want you to go to the website. I also like that programme that came from borough market, I think tom Parker-Bowles was in it sometimes, was it called Market Kit hen or something?

Quenelle Thu 07-Feb-13 12:53:07

Ah. Review on

The new programme has an issue though, but they may have turned the weakness into an opportunity – or at least partly.

The BBC is enforcing its guidelines to avoid mentioning or endorsing specific brands, and while that may be OK for a cut of pork, or balsamic vinegar as a cooking ingredient, it is not helpful for wine. Consumers expect to know what wine is being drunk and tasted so they might find it and buy it.

Other programmes, such as Saturday Kitchen, also include wine content, and presenters such as Olly Smith, Tim Atkin, Susie Barrie and Peter Richards show a single bottle and because of this, it is almost exclusively selected from UK supermarket shelves so that it is available to a majority of the show’s audience.

Food & Drink gets around the issue of where to select wines from by having Kate Goodman focusing on the provenance of the wine itself, educating the audience (in a gentle way) about styles of wine rather than promoting individual bottles – and therefore studiously ensuring the brand is not shown, but being able to use wines only available in smaller merchants, and at a much higher average price point. Last night’s wines were a £13 Dao red from Portugal and a £13 German Riesling.

[if you want to know what I believe the wines were, visit my That Wine on TV site - just a play-thing at the moment]

A bit like making Film 2013 without naming any specific films then.

We interviewed Michel Roux Jr about his life, cooking and the new Food and Drink series - have a listen!

I would rather be told where we can buy the wines!
