Who is the American actor playing the...er..American? What's he been in?

Getting a bit of a Sunday night crush on him, now Cousin Matthew from Downton is no more what's a girl to do?

BaconAndAvocado Sun 13-Jan-13 21:40:06

I think it's his drawling voice that does it......

KurriKurri Sun 13-Jan-13 22:51:18

Is this worth watching on catch up _ I tried the first episode and got hopelessly lost, - I feel as if it's the sort of thing I might like if I could get into it, - does it improve after first episode?

Sorry I've asked a question rather than answering yours grin but here's his biog. if it's any help - he's not an actor I know.

But he's no replacement for Matthew - what are you thinking????? grin

HeavenlyAmy Sun 13-Jan-13 23:24:32

Twas much better episode today!

How did the wife manage to escape the same fate as the others though?

BaconAndAvocado Mon 14-Jan-13 09:12:58

kurri I'm enjoying it, the sets are amazing, all CGIed no doubt but still impressive. Matthew's voice is veeeeeery sexy too non? It's the M and S food ads that do it!

I'm not sure either how wifey escaped the lurgy?

rainbow2000 Tue 15-Jan-13 09:09:22

Yes thought the last 2 episodes were better than the first.

KurriKurri Tue 15-Jan-13 10:15:44

That's good - I'll watch on iplayer and get back into it then smile

yes Matthew v-sexy voice - I may have to give up on Downton with him gone (Carson doesn't cut it!) on the plus side presumably Matthews had a better job offer that's why he's left.

Saltire Tue 15-Jan-13 10:19:49

No no no, I have harboured a life long crush on Paddy Garvey Jerome Flynn since way back in the soldier soldier days.
<showing my age now>

HoobleDooble Thu 17-Jan-13 18:11:05

I'm really enjoying it so far, but the continuity problem with the scratches on the detective's face was so distracting! On the left when it happened, then on the right when they were outside the bakery, then back on the left again back at the station!

But at least I wasn't hiding behind the sofa like I was with the Fagin-type bloke on Episode 2.

inchoccyheaven Tue 22-Jan-13 12:31:37

HoobleDooble DH noticed that too and said how ridiculas that it kept swopping. How or why do they do that?

MorrisZapp Tue 22-Jan-13 14:28:35

This series gets better and better. Mind you, I didn't know that prostitutes in Victorian London had access to a Mac cosmetics counter. That young girl who had been so badly treated by Creepy McGann and the Scary Doctor came good at the end - and she looked like she'd been avidly devouring the latest make up blogs.

My fave characters are Reid (though I don't find him attractive), Jerome thingy sidekick (very attractive) and the Jewish orphanage lady. I think she will get a shag by the end of the series, I hope so anyway.

Oh and the eager young laddie copper. very sweet.

whatkungfuthat Tue 22-Jan-13 17:19:40

I am really enjoying this series, I don't fancy Reid but Jerome Flynn and the american guy are both attractive. The mystery about Reid's daughter is driving me mad though, he has dropped several hints about her not being dead.

freetoanyhome Sun 03-Feb-13 17:19:35

has the daughter thing been explained?

foofooyeah Sun 03-Feb-13 17:22:50

I assumed his daughter was dead - interesting ....

I love this series, its my compulsive Sunday night viewing.

whatkungfuthat Sun 03-Feb-13 17:50:01

He asked that orphanage lady what she would do if a little girl who wasn't jewish were brought to her and he told the wife that he couldn't join her in mourning their daughter so I assume she is missing rather than dead.

spanky2 Sun 03-Feb-13 17:54:13

I thought his dd was killed in a fire and he was burned all over his arm and shoulder trying to rescue her. The American man I find strangely attractive made some reference to the dd and scars during their fight .

whatkungfuthat Sun 03-Feb-13 18:19:23

I am totally confused now then!

freetoanyhome Sun 03-Feb-13 19:11:57

maybe she went missing in a fire and he rushed in to rescue her but couldnt find her. Thats my guess. Hence the wife (who he doesnt seem to talk too) mourning her death while he holds out hope?
There's amystery about Jackson too. Mind you, seems that in 1889 you could waltz in and start dissecting without letters of reference or anything!
Hobbs looks like he should be doing his A levels grin

freetoanyhome Sun 03-Feb-13 21:42:06

blimey

whatkungfuthat Sun 03-Feb-13 22:09:50

So presumably he thinks she is with one or more of the other survivors

But where was the boat and where would survivors go to? confused

Oh, it doesn't make sense, but it looks lush so who cares? grin

Loving Ripper Street. Don't always understand it, but compelling all the same. And Jerome Flynn, who usually leaves me cold, is really good as the sidekick.

freetoanyhome Mon 04-Feb-13 12:47:02

so thats awkward. Having snogged the jewish lady and gone home to the wife.

Galaxymum Mon 04-Feb-13 17:52:36

DH and I hsve missed this series. Is it worth getting on dvd? Will it be boxset watching worthy?

I wouldn't buy it, Galaxymum, but might be worth Lovefilming it.

It's better than Whitechapel but not a patch on The Crimson Petal And The White, put it that way grin

Clawdy Mon 04-Feb-13 18:54:39

I really like it but the constant violence, especially the face-punching, is beginning to turn my stomach a bit.

freetoanyhome Mon 04-Feb-13 19:16:20

its on iplayer

ShipwreckedAndComatose Mon 04-Feb-13 20:14:50

I'm loving it too...it's getting better as it goes along.

Wiki says that a second series has been commissioned.

(I knew I recognised Jerome from somewhere but hadn't worked out it was him!)

SinisterBuggyMonth Tue 05-Feb-13 23:18:54

This is the one costume drama dp will watch with me, because its gory enough. Jackson is fwore

I second that Sinister!

whatkungfuthat Wed 06-Feb-13 10:28:51

Thirded!

LadyClariceCannockMonty Wed 06-Feb-13 10:42:57

I'm loving this. It sort of snuck up on me – watched the first couple just out of curiosity but now it's one of those rare 'counting the days until the next one' shows.

Love Matthew McF and am enjoying the dodgy American. I don't get the constant 'Pinkerton' references though.

I also love the Jewish-orphanage woman, and the owner of the whorehouse and her amazing parade of fashions.

V fond of the desk officer at the police station too, in a 'favourite uncle' kind of way.

whatkungfuthat Wed 06-Feb-13 10:47:54

Lady The Pinkertons were a sort of private security force that got involved in a lot of political stuff back when RS was set. They are part of Securitas now I believe confused

LadyClariceCannockMonty Wed 06-Feb-13 10:49:32

Thanks kungfu. Bit dodgy then, I take it. Although I've just remembered that in the last episode it transpired that Pinkerton had never heard of him ...

Presumably there's a big dark secret to come out about him and the brothel-owner before the end of the series. Can't wait!

Thanks for that kungfu now I understand it better too!

Ionasky Wed 06-Feb-13 11:05:24

love this show - the first episode was a bit so-so but it got much better, the main characters are all interesting and the writing seems fairly good. The daughter thing is driving me mad though - still don't understand whether Reid blames himself for good reason or not though?

whatkungfuthat Wed 06-Feb-13 11:27:58

I think Jackson's identity has to do with the ring he lost gambling and Long Susan tried to get back. Reid now has it and said that the owner was on a list of wanted men from the american police/FBI or whatever they were called then.

foofooyeah Mon 18-Feb-13 15:08:02

Anyone else still watching this ?

I was absolutely gob smacked by last nights episode - the young opliceman: didn't see that coming at all. I did twig about the wife though.

Some of the story line a little far fetched but still loving it

foofooyeah Mon 18-Feb-13 15:08:54

Bets line front desk officer man -"If we find them may we kill them sir?"

whatkungfuthat Mon 18-Feb-13 15:12:51

I loved last night's, best one yet IMO. Doesn't look good for Jackson for next week. I wonder if the daughter is going to turn up?

foofooyeah Mon 18-Feb-13 15:17:29

I loved it when Jackson shot that man as well - wasnt actually expecting that - thought that someone else was going to shoot him when they were getting ready to duel - or the 'madame' was when he handed her the gun.

freetoanyhome Mon 18-Feb-13 15:17:35

so who looks after all those orphans when jewish lady is either off at the women's refuge or snogging Reid?
Cracking episode last night.

BinarySolo Mon 18-Feb-13 15:33:37

So the american's married to the Brothal owner, but they haven't done the deed? Have I got that right? He said something about her wanting to stay unmolested. Bit of an odd career choice for a virgin.

They don't seem to like each other half the time either.

Oblomov Wed 20-Feb-13 15:24:47

Dh and I both love it.
I just KNEW he was going to snog orphanage woman.

ShipwreckedAndComatose Thu 21-Feb-13 18:38:36

Can't quite take his wife seriously after seeing her play Lady Mary in BeingHuman last week!

I also loved the last episod. I am really pleased there will be a second series but sad at the loss of the young policeman

marmite69 Thu 21-Feb-13 19:29:48

Love this,I blubbed when Jerome walked into the morgue where the young policeman was laid out and said "no not the lad sir"

BinarySolo Thu 21-Feb-13 19:37:48

Yes she was fab as Lady Mary! I'll be imagining her swearing like a trouper now.

MeanAndMeaslyMiddleAges Sun 24-Feb-13 22:15:30

God I love this programme. Did anyone else feel their heart go re the reveal about his daughter at the end?

whatkungfuthat Sun 24-Feb-13 22:25:45

I really wanted a happy ending, it wouldn't have been in the spirit of the series though.

foofooyeah Sun 24-Feb-13 22:38:02

No it would have been too neat a tie up if it had been her. They are doing another series I hope ?? Anyone know ?

SinisterBuggyMonth Sun 24-Feb-13 22:58:30

Brilliant. Love the detail of the set, costumes, titles, like real care and attention thats gone into this. The last scene with Jackson with his feet up on Reeds desk could have been from The Sweeny, Life on Mars Victorian times. Love the sideburns too (I was born in the wrong century)

More please!

MorrisZapp Mon 25-Feb-13 09:33:23

Well it was bloody marvellous wasn't it. The last two episodes really kicked up the pace and the emotional agony, I could hardly cope.

I think they pushed their luck a bit with a couple of scenes (the bit where they scalped the slave trader and pretended he was alive seemed a stretch to me) but so much of it was superb it's hard to know where to begin the praise. Jerome Flynn has been a genuine revelation, truly amazing. Reid is just perfect, ponderous, tortured yet human. Anybody else actually jump off the sofa and indulge in fist pumping when he finally got his leg over? I absolutely love the orphanage lady, hope she's featured in the new series.

Reid's wife has a very strong presence, will be interesting to see where that goes. Will their marriage rekindle? Or will he find comfort elsewhere? Come to think of it, will she find comfort elsewhere? Go on Mrs Reid, we won't judge.

I found myself moved almost to tears by the loss of Hobbs, I had my eye on him as a grower. Long Susan may need to try some new facial expressions - hard eyes and tiny mouth will only take a character so far. And will Rose become a bobby's wife - surely not. That would be a Niles/ Daphne chemistry killer wouldn't it.

I love the newspaper editor too, though I don't understand why he sacrificed his ear to protect Jackson. Anyone know?

Really can't actually wait for the next series. Think I will rewatch this lot too, I'm sure I missed loads of detail first time round. I might not bother with the first ep though, talk about ill judged tone.

Love, love, loved it.

Saltire Mon 25-Feb-13 10:01:41

Is the orphanage lady the same actress who played DI Manson's wife in The Bill? I'm sure I have seen her somewhere before?

I loved this series,a nd especially Jerome Flynn (aka Paddy garvey grin) good to see him back on tv

Sallster Mon 25-Feb-13 11:23:08

Jerome Flynn was in Game of Thrones recently, as was the guy who played Barnaby the brother last night! Hodor...

Sallster Mon 25-Feb-13 11:24:17

And it took me ages to work out (OK I had to Google it) that the actor playing the Slaver was one of the Borgia sons... it was really bugging me where I had seen him before!

Clawdy Mon 25-Feb-13 15:02:32

I so wanted it to be his daughter, but yes,it would have been too neat...sad

fussychica Mon 25-Feb-13 15:15:55

Great series - looking forward to the next one. Like others I couldn't believe it when Hobbs died - thought he had bigger things ahead of him - bit upsetsad

PimpMyHippo Mon 25-Feb-13 17:08:57

It was almost the end by the time I realised that Clara (evil Victor's sister) was played by the same person who was Frankie in Lip Service. What a difference!

Badvoc Mon 25-Feb-13 17:19:48

Adam rothenberg is fab as Jackson.
Well, they are all well cast really.
Nice to see jerome Flynn back too.
Can't wait for the second series!....

Sallster yes it was great to see David Oakes in last night's episode wasn't it. He does a brilliant nasty/spoiled/creepy character. Pity he won't be in Borgias Season 3! sad

Absolutely loved Ripper Street, it just got better and better with each episode .

Blondeshavemorefun Tue 26-Feb-13 13:59:53

shipwreck - me too - as in the girl being in being human

weird series, i enjoyed the first one, got a little lost 4/5 and last episode i fell asleep in ( i think) or just didnt understand sad

the kidnapping by the brothers and sister - why did they do this?

the jangling of bells on the stand, assume had lots of girls tied up -for what reason

knew the amercian couldnt be the ripper smile

so is his daughter dead?

who was the other girl

maybe i need to rewatch on iplayer lol

WizardofOs Tue 26-Feb-13 19:10:04

the kidnapping by the brothers and sister - why did they do this? - they were selling the girls to men in South America (assume British men rather than South Americans)

the jangling of bells on the stand, assume had lots of girls tied up -for what reason - all girls they had kidnapped to sell and were keeping there until the ship sailed.

Knew the american guy was not the ripper - the prositute he was supposed to have killed was actually killed by the Pinkerton villan in the last episode to frame him.

so is his daughter dead? - looks like she is

who was the other girl - someone they found on a street corner abandoned

Blondeshavemorefun Tue 26-Feb-13 22:01:21

thanks wizard smile
