Royle Family....worst yet?

The last Christmas specials have been dire. The remaining four main characters are caricatures of themselves, and the complete absence of Denise and Dave's two children (even at their Christmas dinner!!) is ridiculous. It's become crude and embarassing, and Caroline Aherne should have stopped after The Queen Of Sheba, and just left us with fond memories.....

aladdinsane Wed 26-Dec-12 10:01:16

Agree, I stopped watching its time to let it go

sooperdooper Wed 26-Dec-12 10:02:26

I felt like all the characters have become horribly unpleasant and totally unlikable. Jim used to come across as a lovable rogue, but now he's just a lazy bully with no redeeming features at all, we all found it too depressing to enjoy

jungletoes Wed 26-Dec-12 10:15:27

It was a bit ridiculous in places but I loved it.

ISawSantaKissingThePortlyPinUp Wed 26-Dec-12 10:20:02

We thought it was dire.

Horsemad Wed 26-Dec-12 10:53:08

We enjoyed it.

merlottits Wed 26-Dec-12 11:03:34

Utterly cringeworthy and dreadful. I adored the subtlety of The Royle family but it is now a parody of itself. Poor, poor writing. I had to switch it off or I would have developed a repetitive strain injury from cringing.

Sparklingbrook Wed 26-Dec-12 11:09:11

I agree with you merlottits. sad

Sparklingbrook Wed 26-Dec-12 11:09:36

Where was Anthony? And Cheryl?

HoHoHokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Wed 26-Dec-12 11:14:25

It was awful, i used to love it and cried buckets at Queen of Sheba.

It's so terrible now, the last xmas one was dire but this was just ridiculous.

Such a shame.

vjg13 Wed 26-Dec-12 11:15:46

Dreadful, BBC should stop wasting money on this now.

cocolepew Wed 26-Dec-12 11:16:05

The caravan one was the worst. I liked last nights, though it got very stupid with the dating stuff.

Gumby Wed 26-Dec-12 11:18:03

I quite enjoyed it!

Nancy66 Wed 26-Dec-12 11:35:51

Very disappointing.

Defiintely time to let it go now.

I thought the one with the new sofa was ok but the one in the caravan was terrible and this the worst yet.

Ricky Tomlinson overacts like mad.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells Wed 26-Dec-12 12:35:13

I agree, it was crap.
And Jim is just a crude bully.

FunnysFuckingFreezing Wed 26-Dec-12 12:37:05

it was awful and has been for a good few years now. I still made a point of watching it, but gave up half way through

Garnier Wed 26-Dec-12 12:47:43

really really hate jim and that arm waving business he does, and he did it even more last night. No anthony or cheryl who are hilarious characters. Did not like the new neighbour either.

BoiledEggandToastSoldiers Wed 26-Dec-12 12:58:46

Was really, really poor, switched off. agree it is now a parody of itself.

kerstina Wed 26-Dec-12 13:05:06

I love the Royle family but was disappointed with last nights episode. My mom was adamant it was a repeat which shows how samey it was. I loved the caravan one though.

whistlestopcafe Wed 26-Dec-12 13:13:31

When the Royle Family first started they were an ordinary working class family and you could relate to certain aspects. Now they are more like a family off the Jeremy Kyle show, I honestly don't know anyone as thick as they are.

I liked the Christmas episode two years ago with Saskia. Saskia added a touch of normality to it.

whistlestopcafe Wed 26-Dec-12 13:16:12

Also the review in the Radio Times was wrong. It said that Barbara had gone overboard with presents from the Pound Shop. confused

judefawley Wed 26-Dec-12 13:18:07

Our kids really wanted to watch it, so we let them.

It was so inappropriate for a 10 year old! (I know it wasn't on at a suitable time so it totally serves us right).

We enjoyed it though, mostly because the kids laughed like drains at the neighbour's dinner dates.

In the cold light of day though; it was quite bad.

GW297 Wed 26-Dec-12 13:33:02

Last years was terrible. This years wasn't as bad as that but still disappointing. Same with Outnumbered - kids too old!

Nancy66 Wed 26-Dec-12 13:46:39

i was expecting there to be some punchline to 'Dave's dickie' - with it not being something entirely different from what we were all assuming.

RedTinsel Wed 26-Dec-12 14:02:38

It was only half watching. Was there any explanation as to why Denise's kids weren't at Xmas dinner?

Clawdy Wed 26-Dec-12 14:12:31

Not unless I missed something. In a previous Christmas episode the excuse was that they were at Anthony's for the day which sounded improbable. I think Caroline A.must be regretting ever introducing children into the family set-up now.

millymae Wed 26-Dec-12 14:18:52

It needed to be watched to the end - jim hid a new wedding ring for barbara in the christmas puddings he'd won. I took it to mean that he was an old softie really. Perhaps it was because I'd had a few drinks but I almost cried at the end!. As to Denise's children - who knows? She forgot to pick them up from school one day so they had been taken into care for their own safety.

millymae Wed 26-Dec-12 14:21:05

Oops that last sentence didn't make sense - I meant to say that they could have been taken into care for their own safety.

CalamityKate Wed 26-Dec-12 14:24:48

I thought it was absolutely woeful but I've thought that about all the episodes after The Queen of Sheba.

Jokes are laboured and just go on and on. It's become like some awful sitcom. I used to love it and I could still watch earlier episodes over and over but she's just lost it IMO.

fussychica Wed 26-Dec-12 15:13:53

Crude & awful not Xmas fare IMHO but it takes all sorts.

out2lunch Wed 26-Dec-12 15:19:32

i missed the ending to what happened wrt dave's problem - can anyone tell me?

barbara said right at the very start that she had got all the presents from poundland and been in there for two hours

noddyholder Wed 26-Dec-12 15:21:26

Different take I liked it. Them dressing up as waiters etc was totally not the norm slightly darker and more theatrical

kerstina Wed 26-Dec-12 17:37:23

It seems to have become more slapstick as opposed to when it first started it was more subtle and realistic. I used to think it was like my own family blush Barbara was my favourite character but she seems to have become more stupid but I suppose that can happen. She showed glimpses of her old spirit coming back last night. Perhaps I will like it more if I watched again. I think I felt a bit like that with the ashes one.

Jemma1111 Wed 26-Dec-12 17:49:19

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than watch another episode of that. Absolutely boring and rubbish storyline

I found some of the jokes quite funny, but usually the ones where they sit on the sofa chatting, like the original series.

The waiter scene was a bit surreal.

I enjoyed the caravan one, and Joe's crackers. I was hoping Twiggy might make an appearance though at least.

whistlestopcafe Wed 26-Dec-12 18:05:14

The actor who played Twiggy died recently.

ledkr Wed 26-Dec-12 18:16:18

I agree with whoever said its moved from lovable working class to jezzer Kyle fodder so lost its humour. I have never noticed the filth either. Greas on walls etc it made me feel sick nothing endearing about minging ness

Oh how sad, I loved Twiggy, and Eddie Yates.

whistlestopcafe Wed 26-Dec-12 18:29:22

I quite liked the Philomena character she was sweet and reminded me of Mary.

Sparklingbrook Wed 26-Dec-12 18:33:30

Didn't like cadging Carol or whatever she was called.

usualsuspect3 Wed 26-Dec-12 18:33:45

I loved it.

Mrsrudolphduvall Wed 26-Dec-12 18:36:46

It was shocking.
Denise especially.

CalamityKate Wed 26-Dec-12 18:46:43

Oh god the Philomena character with Joe mispronouncing her name time after time.

Philadelphia.... Filet o'fish.... Really? I mean REALLY??

Lazy, lazy writing.

kerstina Wed 26-Dec-12 19:21:48

I don't think its lazy writing in fact it might be more funny to read the script as the subtler jokes you sometimes miss on first watch. Even at its worst I find the Royles a 1000 times more funny than outnumbered. I actually watched outnumbered the other day without cringing possibly because the children had grown up a bit.

Clawdy Wed 26-Dec-12 21:52:39

Didn't see any subtle jokes...seemed to be all about earwaxy Qtips and skirts tucked in knickers....

Sparklingbrook Wed 26-Dec-12 21:54:51

And Dave's erection problems and Jim's bowels Clawdy. hmm

FannyFifer Wed 26-Dec-12 21:59:10

I have always detested the Royle family, it honestly makes me feel sick to look at them, they give me the total boak. Never been funny.

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 09:29:47

I felt like all the characters have become horribly unpleasant and totally unlikable.

^ ^ this is what I thought they were filthy dirty not just scruffy, barb looked worn down and jim was just disgusting not the usually warm Royale family doesn't caroline ahern like them anymore or something confused, It was grim , I did watch and when she got her wedding ring it was nice i suppose, but...

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 09:32:06

Was there any explanation as to why Denise's kids weren't at Xmas dinner?

they go to daves parents because denise thinks christmas isnt for kids, she said it a few specials ago, and denise is a terrible parent it was funny before but god she is terrible

Sparklingbrook Thu 27-Dec-12 10:39:16

I think they don't want any child actors in it TBH *mrsj. But they could be upstairs/round at Cheryls as an explanation. How old are they supposed to be? I lose track. Was Anthony mentioned at all?

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 10:50:16

I think baby david is about 10/12 and norma about 5/6 <clutching at straws> no anthony wasn't mentioned, it was all really rubbish and grim,

Sparklingbrook Thu 27-Dec-12 10:54:42

Because Anthony and her off Downton would have had a baby by now too wouldn't they?

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 10:57:38

yes she went into labour last christmas would be babies 1st birthday wouldn't it

Sparklingbrook Thu 27-Dec-12 10:59:34

possibly mrsj or they split up and she ran off with Peter Andre and Anthony is now dating someone from TOWIE. We can just make it up as we will never know. grin

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 11:05:00

she has maybe the baby stored somewhere so she could do the downtown christmas special grin

overtheseatocalais Thu 27-Dec-12 11:32:38

I'm convinced that the actress who played Philomena was one and the same who played Mary... DH did not recognise her. Am I right?!!

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 11:34:46

no that actress died I am sure they had in memory of at the end of an episode, she was meant to look like mary though that was the whole point

Wishfulmakeupping Thu 27-Dec-12 11:58:42

I love the royle family but agree this wasn't a good episode think they need to go back to basics- that whole dating sequence didn't work

Blondeshavemorefun Thu 27-Dec-12 17:56:08

was crap and so boring that they all repeat what each other says

Nancy66 Thu 27-Dec-12 18:00:22

Norma - Dave and Denise's youngest would be about six by now and 'baby david' would be about 12

JingleBel Thu 27-Dec-12 18:07:54

Barbara blowing her nose on the tea towel and somebody else mentioned the filth. Gave me the boak.

out2lunch Thu 27-Dec-12 19:42:11

4th highest rating over xmas though

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 19:44:17

Barbara blowing her nose on the tea towel and somebody else mentioned the filth. Gave me the boak.

their house was never as minging as that scruffy yes filthy no it was as if barb had just given up I cant remember the kitchen being that dirty ,

mrsjay Thu 27-Dec-12 19:44:44

out2lunch i think people love the Rotale familiy and look frwd to the Christmas special

GeorginaWorsley Thu 27-Dec-12 19:48:53

Used to enjoy it ,being a Manchester girl myself, but didn't really like this episode.
Seemed even cruder than usual, house filthy, the kids being never seen now ridiculous.
Did smile at the last bit though.

out2lunch Thu 27-Dec-12 20:06:29

i know mrsjay let's hope next year is better

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells Fri 28-Dec-12 00:40:20

I'm watching the repeat of the Queen of Sheba, and already laughing and prepared to cry at the end.
It's utterly perfect.
How could she do such a genius bit of writing like this, and then write this year's crap. sad?

SinisterBuggyMonth Fri 28-Dec-12 02:19:11

Just watched the Nana ep too, I think I got something in my eye at the end.

Agree that the lack of Anthony and Cheryl is annoying. Would like Cheryl to turn up annoyingly thin! What happened with Anthony and his first girlfriend?

I think its stupid how they never have the kids in it, what a waste.

jalopy Fri 28-Dec-12 10:43:26

It was brilliant. Cant fault it.

Cant believe that viewers were expecting to see the kids. The kids aren't supposed to be in it. That's the joke.

SinisterBuggyMonth Fri 28-Dec-12 11:20:23

I find those jokes where someone is never shown, or when chacters go on holiday and just stay in a hotel room with photo of a view backdrop, cheap and lazy looking. I get the impression Caroline Ahern cannot be arsed to write or cast a character under 17yo.

However I do love the Margaret character from Little Britain

Margaret? Margaret?

mrsjay Fri 28-Dec-12 11:54:33

The queen of sheba is a fantastic piece of television it was brilliant and i sobbed and sobbed

FeckOffCup Sat 29-Dec-12 18:03:36

I agree it was pretty awful this year, I used to love the Royle family but it's got stupid and OTT now, it was good years ago when they were a believable family. The characters are just dislikeable now. My favourite used to be the one where Denise went into labour with baby David on christmas day and was in the bathroom being comforted by her dad, used to make me well up but a poster on here (can't remember who now) pointed out that everything Denise was worried about (every expectant first time mum's worries of not being a good mum, not knowing how to relate to the baby etc) all came true and she is the worst mum ever. That's taken the shine off that one for me because it's so true.

alemci Sun 30-Dec-12 20:38:26

also it was horrible when Denise said that her daughter Norma had cooked the chips and made her tea. didn't find that funny.

some bits were okay.

My DSD and DSS did this once while my DH was away in Iraq with the army. (when he was still married to his ex)

She proudly sent him a photo of them, balanced on stools, using the deep fat fryer.

At 5 and 6 years old. sad

mrsjay Mon 31-Dec-12 09:10:05

I still enjoy watching my boxset of The Royle Family, and it's sad to see how much the writing has deteriorated.

It has just gone downhill , denise has gone from lazy mare to neglectful parent, she is just awful.

FiftyShedsOfGrey Mon 31-Dec-12 09:19:46

I agree that the characters have just become unbearable. I used to love the RF but the last few episodes have made me say "where are Jim's redeeming features FFS?", he's become really hateful.

I saw the ring replacement coming a mile away, hated the dating stuff, just found it embarrassing and I didn't laugh once all the way through.

V poor.

mrsjay Mon 31-Dec-12 09:29:27

I think the coroline aherne and craig cash have lost sight what the programme was about tbh, they should have a rethink if they are going to do anymore christmas epsiodes , one of my friends was so annoyed at this years she emailed the beeb shock

101handbags Wed 02-Jan-13 15:50:36

I am coming to this late as I've been away but was interested to see what the mumsnet jury thought of this as my DP and I both absolutely hated it. Such a shame... poor writing, characters have become parodies of themselves, their stupidity is utterly ridiculous and I felt uncomfortable watching - it had a 'let's laugh at poor, uneducated people' vibe about it. The cheese board witht the cheese strings, dairylea etc. - how many times can they try to get a laugh out of dairylea? I also agree that the characters (especially Jim) have become nasty rather than showing any endearing characteristics whatsoever. The utterly filthy house, the poverty played for laughs... I just didn't like it. The next door neighbour Cadging Carol was utterly ridiculous and over the top. The strong point about the Royle Family was that it was subtle and believable. This has been lost.

Wingedharpy Wed 02-Jan-13 17:49:21

It was hated in the Wingedharpy household too.
The humour was always in the script writing as they never did anything anyway other than watch TV but this script was v. poor and mostly unfunny.
Regarding the borderline child abuse (kids making chips etc) that was always part of the script.
I remember Denise saying that someone had bought baby David 200 Benson's for his Christening present and how kind that was! (sorry MN but I think that's hillarious.

CalamityKate Wed 02-Jan-13 18:54:06

Oh god yes the cheeseboard "A bit of Dairylea and a smell of jigs socks" really??

If Barbara had said it as a joke then maybe but she didn't. It's just got absolutely stupid. Also a few years ago Denise cooking Xmas dinner. Defrosting the turkey in the bath... Ridiculously watery cup a soup... Just pathetically stupid.

YouOldSlag Fri 04-Jan-13 17:40:17

I agree. They should have ended it with Queen of Sheba, not eked out lazily written "specials" with half the cast missing.

The characters have become unlikeable. Dave and Denise just neglect their kids, which loses all sympathy and doesn't make me feel like laughing. Jim is only just short of abusive to Barb, in that he treats her like a slave and is never grateful. The plot and characterisation doesn't even try to be remotely realistic and it's realism was its USP.

I'd be happy for them to show repeats of Queen of Sheba rather than hash out these watered down half arsed must-write-it-cos-I've-signed-the-contract efforts.

Don't even talk to me about the episode a few years back where they hadn't defrosted the turkey. I mean that's never been done before has it? Not since Terry and June have I seen such groundbreaking originality.

Once you dislike a character, it's hard to enjoy them. Unless they're played by Alan Rickman (but that's a whole other thread...)
