Anyone been watching this? I didn't think I'd enjoy it much but it's so sweet and heartwarming. I'm thoroughly enjoying it smile

Mumofthreeteens Wed 05-Dec-12 14:29:04

I have really enjoyed it so far. Amazed Derek Jacobi is still alive, he was in I Claudius when I was a kid.

Clayhead Wed 05-Dec-12 14:29:47

It's had much more to it than I thought it would. Some great acting.

GreatCongas Wed 05-Dec-12 14:41:19

He's been busy doing in the night garden until now

I've been watching it. It's intriguing and I can't sense where it is going

SpanishFly Wed 05-Dec-12 14:49:33

I have to say I'm a bit confused as to why Gillian would hv had sex with that creepy guy - he treats her appallingly and is lechy. She seemed disgusted by him, so it's a bit weird.

And yes, Derek Jacobi has always seemed to be that age!

carabos Wed 05-Dec-12 16:36:09

spanishfly I agree - how and why would she get involved with such a creep - and he's young enough to be her son? Actually, her calling up Caroline's husband creeped me out a bit too - I'm wondering if she's a predator? She's the least sympathetic of the characters.

Caroline is hilarious - great acting from Sarah Lancashire.

diddl Wed 05-Dec-12 17:31:30

It´s great, isn´t it?

I love Anne Reid-loved it when she slapped the SIL.

And Sarah Lancashire is good as well.

All interesting characters.

Wingedharpy Wed 05-Dec-12 17:34:45

I've been really enjoying this too though I missed it last night due to life intruding on my telly viewing.
I came to the conclusion that Gillian was just using the creepy guy for sexual gratification purposes only - she doesn't want a relationship with anyone as she's no time and it's too complicated or it could possibly have something to do with the reason her husband committed suicide...........
Who knows? - at least it's less complicated than Homeland!

OodKingWenceslas Wed 05-Dec-12 17:47:50

I'm loving it too.

I`m loving it, I throught the creepy youngster Gillian was having sex with was horrible, but of course I started feeling really sorry for him last night.

ChippingInLovesAutumn Wed 05-Dec-12 18:10:12

I've really enjoyed it so far too, though I made encouraged a friend to watch it last night and it wasn't as good as the first ones... I hope it was just a little dip.

GreatCongas Wed 05-Dec-12 18:38:55

Not sure she could be his mum. I would have put him at around 30 and she's what? 40
And dh wonders why I'm always looking these sorts of things up

SpanishFly Wed 05-Dec-12 18:47:03

winged at first I'd wondered if it was just an uncomplicated sexual thing, but choosing someone who's engaged doesn't seem uncomplicated smile

jessiegeesusinamanger Thu 06-Dec-12 10:42:55

I watched the first 2 episodes on iplayer last night because 2 of my friends were raving about it. I thought I'd hate it but am absolutely loving it. Such great acting and somehow it's believable! I haven't enjoyed a tv drama as much for years and years.

rocketupbum Thu 06-Dec-12 14:35:35

I think it's great too, fab acting too. I got married in the hall they are now locked in!

GreatCongas Thu 06-Dec-12 15:18:04

Is it spooky?

CuriousMama Thu 06-Dec-12 15:27:03

No GreatCongas that's Crickley grin

I love it too. The acting's fantastic and you really don't know where it's going? Plus it's a bit of a mystery.

I think Gillian rang Caroline's husband as she has no friends?

diddl Thu 06-Dec-12 17:12:15

Another thing I like & I don´t mean this to be offensive, is that the actors are quite ordinary looking.

You could quite feasibly see them together.

No middle aged paunchy husband with a trophy wife.

diddl Thu 06-Dec-12 17:13:43

I have a terrible feeling that they won´t get married.

Perhaps they´ll find that they´ve changed too much.

marleybrodie Thu 06-Dec-12 20:11:32

Loving this filmed not too far away from me.
Thought it sounded far too cheesey....but it's great viewing.

BackforGood Thu 06-Dec-12 20:21:42

Haven't watched this week's yet, but I too have really enjoyed the first 2 episodes. Great cast. Lots of different bits of storyline you can see developing. Have to agree though about the sex with the leech! I mean - you wouldn't, would you ??? confused

CuriousMama Thu 06-Dec-12 20:23:47

I think Nicola Walker (Gillian) is a fantastic actress. She was great in Spooks too.

GreatCongas Thu 06-Dec-12 20:46:45

Yes she's very human isn't she. I keep expecting people to call her Ruth though

Santaslittlemisshelper Thu 06-Dec-12 20:49:15

I'm enjoying it, only watched it to spot local areas and rather disappointed that it hasn't really shown much of Halifax!

BikeRunSki Thu 06-Dec-12 21:08:16

I like that it us based on the writer's mum's real-life experience.

And that I can shout and point at the telling saying "Been there!".

CuriousMama Thu 06-Dec-12 22:19:46

Ruth grin

I didn't know that BikeRunSki?

BikeRunSki Thu 06-Dec-12 23:01:37

It said so in the paper. Can't remember which one - we were at the PIL's and FIL gets about 4 on a Saturday.

CuriousMama Fri 07-Dec-12 14:18:50

Found this you're right BRS, what a lovely story smile

Writer Sally Wainwright based the story on the experience of her mother Dorothy who was put in touch with her childhood sweetheart Alec via Friends Reunited after being widowed at the ago of 75. Alec had also recently been widowed. The couple fell in love all over again and got married.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes Fri 07-Dec-12 23:10:25

I'm just watching this week's now after someone recommended it on another thread. I'm really enjoying it, some great acting.

Lech bloke really gave me the creeps in the first episode, the scene in the supermarket, then when it emerged he was engaged that made hime even worse. Hard to feel much sympathy for him to be honest, although no one deserves to be beaten like that. I guess Gillian is lonely and suffering with low self esteem, which is why she's latched onto Caroline's husband now.

I don't like Robbie at all. Or Caroline's husband. Or any of the sons. But Alan and all the female characters are great (with the possible exception of Judith).

CuriousMama Tue 11-Dec-12 21:06:38

It's on now smile

DorsetKnobwithJingleBellsOn Tue 11-Dec-12 21:08:30

It was in the Daily Mail blush

We are loving it in our house.

CuriousMama Tue 11-Dec-12 22:39:53

That hour goes over too quickly.

InExitCelsisDeo Tue 11-Dec-12 22:43:28

Love it. And we also keep shouting, oh look, it's the Co-op in Marsden, or oh look, that's where we park when we go out.

CuriousMama Tue 11-Dec-12 23:02:33

grin It's great when your home town's on telly.

rufussmum Wed 12-Dec-12 17:39:45

Is it just me or is the Jacobi character a tedious, sentimental bore with a prissy, cat's-arse mouth and bad hair? He gives me the creeps.

jessiegeesusinamanger Wed 12-Dec-12 21:27:38

I so want to like him Rufus but I agree with you. There's something repellent about him.

SpanishFly Wed 12-Dec-12 22:06:15

Awww I think he's lovely

ChippingInAWinterWonderland Wed 12-Dec-12 22:42:18

There are only two more episodes in this series (I hope there's another series!!) and they are both next week. Just thought some people who don't auto record might like to know smile

drownangels Thu 13-Dec-12 11:43:00

Me and DS1 are enjoying it.
I did think that this weeks episode was simply to get Celia and Alan out of the way so they could put the other characters 'point of view' out there and let them tell their own stories and do some scene setting.

a second series has been commisioned apparently.

My betting is that Alan dies due to his dicky heart before they get married! DS1 said I was heartless when I said my theory. (hope I'm wrong though)

Jingleflobba Thu 13-Dec-12 11:47:04

They film some of it really near me too! The shots up on the moors are so close you can see my village smile
Carolines husband was in My Parents are aliens ages ago, he did stand up with Dr Phil Hammond. Didn't realise he could slimy so well...

Wishfulmakeupping Thu 13-Dec-12 11:55:08

Ive been loving this series, only 2 more episodes sad hope the new series is back quickly

diddl Thu 13-Dec-12 12:52:01

I think it´s great.

I have a feeling that they won´t get married-not sure why though.

I like both the Celia & Alan characters.

They´re so different, though.

And him having been happily married before.

The guy playing John-think he´s in supermarket ad atm?

jessiegeesusinamanger Thu 13-Dec-12 18:26:23

Even though I'm not keen on Jacobi's 'Alan', I'm desperate for him not to die of a heart attack before Celia and he are married. Surely they can't have a sad ending?!!!!!

drownangels Thu 13-Dec-12 18:55:55

Jessie He is going to forget to take his heart tablets and collapse at the wheel of his Lexus on his way to meet Celia for their wedding.
Celia will think that he has stood her up as pay back from all those years ago!

jessiegeesusinamanger Fri 14-Dec-12 21:17:08

Oh angels that would be AWFUL. It's a comedy drama though so I'm hoping for a more feel-good ending smile

GreatCongas Fri 14-Dec-12 21:27:43

Thanks for the double episode reminder

drownangels Sat 15-Dec-12 13:27:00

jessie me too!!

I was only joking!! (so hope I'm wrong though, I do like Derek Jacobi)
Maybe the twist is that Celia dies which would be a shock as she is the more 'studier' of the two!

InExitCelsisDeo Sat 15-Dec-12 22:32:11

Derek is fab. Stop it with your doom mongering.

Did you mean sturdier?

drownangels Sun 16-Dec-12 22:32:06

inexit I was only having a joke. I want a happy ending! Yes I did mean sturdier.

BaconAndAvocado Mon 17-Dec-12 20:25:56

Am loving this series too, the script is superb and very true to life.

Don't want it to end! Very pleased that someone said there's a second series in the offing smile

MadameBoolala Tue 18-Dec-12 21:59:28

Missed the first 20 minutestonight - what did Derek confess to?

InExitCelsisDeo Tue 18-Dec-12 22:42:42

His daughter stood and watched her husband die. He committed suicide but was not dead - she didn't phone an ambulance, just the police once he had gone. She told her Dad, so he thinks he is an accomplice to manslaughter.

I am sure there is a word for when you fail to take action to save someone, but can't think what it is.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights Tue 18-Dec-12 22:45:03

He told Celia that when Geraldine's husband attempted suicide she found him still alive but just stood and watched him die, rather than getting help. She told her Dad straight away, but he's always kept her secret - he feels Celia should know before they get married that he did this.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights Tue 18-Dec-12 22:45:46

Sensible

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights Tue 18-Dec-12 22:46:26

No, probably not the word you were looking for grin

But he does sound like a nasty bit of work and he wanted to take his own life...

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights Tue 18-Dec-12 22:47:11

... and it's a TV series - I wouldn't be quite this blase if it were RL (though it could have happened as it's based on the writers RL)

diddl Wed 19-Dec-12 08:31:49

Accessory after the fact?

carbondated Wed 19-Dec-12 10:31:32

Oh really? A second series. Brilliant. I was just discussing that possibility with SIL yesterday. I was surprised at Celia being so horrified about Caroline being a Lesbian. She seems so cool about so many things.

thenightsky Wed 19-Dec-12 10:37:55

Last episode is tonight... not next week shock

LittleBairn Wed 19-Dec-12 17:55:29

shock just as well I popped in tonight I would have been pissed off to miss the last Ep.

Found the 'manslaughter' reveal a bit OTT and dark fr the tne of this show.
Plus how odd that Gillian is suddenly prepared to fall for her BIL after making her life a misery for years.
Liking Caroline being out and proud.

InExitCelsisDeo Wed 19-Dec-12 18:57:30

Gillian seems prepared to bed virtually anyone.

Accessory after the fact - yes that is the terminology - althought it always sounds like a fascinator that you couldn't find before the big day.

MadameBoolala Wed 19-Dec-12 20:02:10

Thanks for the info, thought it was something like that.

ChunkyPickle Wed 19-Dec-12 20:12:44

I was watching the last episode, thinking how much Celia and Derek reminded me of Teal and Abney, then, as if they'd been listening to me one of them all but said 'That was an adventure' just like Abney and Teal do at the end of each episode! So now I just can't stop hearing everything they say in cartoon voices :S

I have come very late to this (only started watching yesterday!) but have enjoyed what I have seen.

CuriousMama Wed 19-Dec-12 21:25:35

I've been laughing my socks off tonight grin

I'm loving the laissez faire attitude of Gillian with everyone setting in at hers.

Oooo it's the meal. Celia is a good actress, coming across as a right cow!

CuriousMama Wed 19-Dec-12 21:28:51

Derek's so lovely poor man.

LittleBairn Wed 19-Dec-12 21:55:06

Oh no please let everything be ok!

theliverpoolone Wed 19-Dec-12 22:02:29

Phew! A lovely ending, and Celia redeemed herself (although I had hoped she might have chucked away the Daily Mail grin.

LittleBairn Wed 19-Dec-12 22:04:54

Thank god a happy ending.
grin immediately though of this place when they mentioned the Daily mail.

gypsyfloss Wed 19-Dec-12 22:09:48

That made me cry. I thought Celia was wonderful as a bitch, she and Caroline did fantastic filthy looks.

Did I read somewhere that it's based on a true story?

MadameBoolala Wed 19-Dec-12 22:15:35

Oh I wept at this tonight.

3littlefrogs Wed 19-Dec-12 22:17:53

I have really enjoyed this. I think it is really well written and has so much attention to detail. It makes you laugh one minute and cry the next.

(It calls to mind a series I really enjoyed about 25 years ago called "The Beiderbeck Affair").

I thought Derek Jacobi was wonderful in "I Claudius".

How old is he?

theliverpoolone Wed 19-Dec-12 22:28:17

He's 74 according to wiki.

Wishfulmakeupping Wed 19-Dec-12 22:31:04

Sky plus clipping the very end off where Celia was telling Alan about Kate playing the organ- was there anything else after that?

InExitCelsisDeo Wed 19-Dec-12 22:31:20

I loved the Beiderbeck Affair - happy memories.

Howled with laughter at the Daily Mail references.

Fabulous acting from everyone, looking forward to the next series.

theliverpoolone Wed 19-Dec-12 22:31:49

And Anne Reid (Celia) is 77 shock. I thought she was younger than that. She looks great (and not artificially).

iseetinselandtantrums Wed 19-Dec-12 22:33:29

Brilliant TV. All our bookclub has been hooked.

iseetinselandtantrums Wed 19-Dec-12 22:34:22

Would not have guessed 77. Good on her for still turning up for the day job.

wishful - no it ended right after that, but the best bit was that the announcer said there's a new series of it in the New Year! So from that I assume he recovers and they get married!

CuriousMama Wed 19-Dec-12 22:38:45

It was fantastic smile

Wishful did you hear her say that'll come in handy as you'll know the Queen of Sheba? then derek was in fits of giggles.

Wishfulmakeupping Wed 19-Dec-12 22:43:46

smile new series that's fab news thanks- really enjoyed the series Best thing on Telly this winter

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights Thu 20-Dec-12 00:55:36

Yes - it has definitely been the best thing on TV for a very very long time, I'm really pleased there's a second series - I wonder when it will be on? This time next year at the earliest I suppose <bugger>

CuriousMama Thu 20-Dec-12 00:58:27

iwasyoungonce said it'll be in the NY?

cheeseslovesme Thu 20-Dec-12 13:18:23

I love it, great acting from all the cast. There should be more dramas like this on tv, i much prefer it to all this reality stuff we are bombarded with smile

clangermum Thu 20-Dec-12 16:06:22

Just loved the way the beaten-up-guy Paul was in the background of so many scenes where important dialogue was going on - almost surreal

clangermum Thu 20-Dec-12 16:08:56

But what will Caroline think when she finds out Gillian bedded John?

Just laugh it off maybe, now she's happy. See it as Gillian using John for sex, rather than the other way round.

I really like the relationship growing between her and Gillian.

gypsyfloss Thu 20-Dec-12 18:44:21

Paul was very funny, like a one man Greek chorus.
I also loved how Gillian invited Robbie for dinner and Paul was there too. It makes me think of her sheep, she just gathers them all together and assumes that after a few leader of the pack type arguments they'll all get along smile

LittleBairn Thu 20-Dec-12 18:51:56

I found Paul funny too, he was just randomly 'there' at some points with a wtf face. grin

Didn't catch the announcement for the new series so pleased there is morpcos come it did feel like there was a lot more left to the storylines.

EllieArroway Fri 21-Dec-12 10:59:47

Best thing that's been on TV for years. Loved it.

Would be amazed if Anne Reid &/or Sarah Lancashire don't get BAFTAs. The whole cast was brilliant, but they shone smile

3littlefrogs Fri 21-Dec-12 11:06:44

The acting was brilliant. So many times there was so much in the facial expressions; words would have been superfluous.

I think it worked so well because it was set "up north". There is something about the landscape and the character of the people that just makes it all believable.

You could see that the actors were all enjoying it too.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes Fri 21-Dec-12 13:43:28

Just finished watching it, what a great series. Where have i seen Paul's mum before?

tblzebra Sun 03-Feb-13 10:29:12
