The Paradise - Mr Moray is a sexual predator! Miss Audrey is right!

(68 Posts)

Never been a fan of Miss Audrey but she was giving Denise good advice this week. What is it with Moray and snogging everyone and anyone then looking wistful about his dead wife. Then there is Clara desperate to give him some -'say it with a Geordie accent' "comfort".

Also, how old is Miss Katherine Glendenning? She looks about 35, with a dowry like hers she would have been married off years ago!

Surely I am not the only one watching this drivel?

I am watching, but am weeks behind A's have been 'taping' it (YKWIM, on the sky planner)

I do think Catherine glendenning is a miserable old trout face!

StripyShoes Fri 02-Nov-12 18:22:36

I watch it! Although I am the only person I know who does! I love Miss Audrey! She was brilliant this week and love the turn the story is taking with the competing stores.

saadia Sun 04-Nov-12 21:22:09

I watch it too and think it has really improved, seems like it will get much more interesting now that Denise has declared her love for Moray. Agree that Miss Audrey came across as very insightful.

DuchessofMalfi Mon 05-Nov-12 18:29:14

I've stopped watching it. I got bored, but it sounds as if the story has started to pick up again. Think I'll be checking out i-player grin

MrsBovary Mon 05-Nov-12 18:34:11

It's still dreadful, but I'm watching all the same.

I still don't understand the appeal of the whispering Mouret, but I do like Lady Glendennings character.

I'm saving it as it's based on one of my favourite books. I've been told it's shite but I'm still looking forward to sitting down and watching it all smile

MrsBovary Mon 05-Nov-12 18:37:42

Oops, Moray. The family is Mouret in the books (though I haven't read Ladies Paradise, just most of the others where the Mourets appear).

DisappointedHorse Mon 05-Nov-12 18:40:04

I really like it! I'm a sucker for a costume drama, even if they are like Heartbeat in period costume.

I swing from liking Moray to really disliking him. I don't think he's a predator, or a murderer but I do think he's a bit of a weakling.

Katherine is not the one for him. I think he wants love but won't let himself and doesn't love Katherine anyway. Denise however, might kindle something!

juneybean Mon 05-Nov-12 18:41:30

I love Elaine Cassidy -swoons- but yeah I do often wonder how old Katherine is meant to be considering the actress is well into her 30s

I hope they come back for a second series, going to get me a boat and row up the Wear to find them /stalker

RafflesWay Tue 06-Nov-12 14:56:38

Oh I just love this programme but I am a sucker for anything like this and please WHEn are the going to repeat Duchess of Duke street as I missed the last series years ago??

Katherine excelled herself with ridiculous dresses tonight. Yet again not much happened, it just bumbled along much like Downton.

DisappointedHorse Wed 07-Nov-12 10:31:41

Her dresses were indeed ridiculous!

I wonder if they are meant to signify her increasing spoilt brattiness so we aren't rooting for her and are rooting for Moray when he is actually being a bit of a shit?

It does next week though! Backward step?

Alibabaandthe40nappies Wed 07-Nov-12 10:34:37

Oh it is better than Downton, Downton is a pile of shite grin

I really like The Paradise blush Am a couple of weeks behind though, must catch up!

oohlaalaa Wed 07-Nov-12 15:22:14

I don't like Downton either, but I love The Paradise.

I know The Paradise is froth and silly, but I love it still.

I wonder how they are going to tie it all, in final episode.

Are they going to find the dead body, of the 'barber/junior partner'? Will this result in the wedding being postponed?

Regardless of dead bodies, I think Moray will jilt Katherine Glendenning, and snog Denise.

We'll then have next series, with Katherine and her dad getting their revenge....

I'm going to have to read the books.

I don't like Moray as a person, but I do think he's very handsome. He makes me swoon.

oohlaalaa Wed 07-Nov-12 15:23:37

I love the chemistry between Moray and Denise. So well acted.

He needs a punch on tbe nose from Lord Glendenning. Denise should run a mile in the opposite direction and what a nightmare Katherine is. Hopefully Jonas will take her off in the carriage too!

[Hand up] I watch this too! It is enjoyably daft. That Miss Glendenning is a bitch. Moray is a git.

Vickibee Thu 08-Nov-12 07:06:23

I love it too - iMoray can't marry Katherine she is a spoiled brat.

Did Jonas murder that jumped up barber a couple of weeks ago.

CAn you imagine having to wear forcks like thatnot being able to have an opinion cos you are a girl?

That what I was wondering, did Jonas murder the barber, have him murdered or was it just implied and something else happened like he woke up drunk on a boat going to America or something!

I wanted to bang the traders heads together, it was because Denise is female they wouldn't co-operate.

Vickibee Thu 08-Nov-12 10:43:37

The preview for next episode saw a body being pulled from the river?

Alibabaandthe40nappies Fri 09-Nov-12 00:04:02

Moray might be a git, but he is very hot.

I have caught up now.

I was loving it, period froth with an ambitious feministy lead grin but then suddenly she falls for a spineless, fickle man-child and endangers her entire career?? angry Spent the last 2 episodes swearing at the TV.

Oh yes, Moray is one hot git AliBaba! I know what you mean Ria, I wanted her to trading enterprise to beat the Paradise and I think Miss Audrey sort of wanted that too, but trailer for next week shows Denise returning!?!

Sorry, too many 'to's'!

MorrisZapp Fri 09-Nov-12 09:59:10

They should either call him Mouret, and pronounce it 'moo-ray', or call him Moray, and pronounce it Murray.

BTW did Moray and Catherine have sex or did I imagine that?

Aftereightsaremine Fri 09-Nov-12 17:04:39

Isn't the Paradise based on Zola's novel? Am certain mouret & Denise marry in the novel. Happy to be corrected though I read yonks ago.

Aftereightsaremine Fri 09-Nov-12 17:05:13

I read IT yonks ago.

Ohhh i'm loving The Paradise. I'm a huge fan of downton but they rished through the years so much last series that now they've had to slow it down or it would be 1996 by now!!

So the paradise was marketed as a bigger budget larkrise (and i lived larkrise) its not gonna end at this series is it? I was hoping it would run like larkrise did. Although its a bit "soaplike" i love denise and mouray's chemistry. I'm constantly squealing "he loves her!" at the tv whilst dh tuts at me.

SilverSixpence Tue 13-Nov-12 22:20:19

Did anyone watch it today? It ended so abruptly, was waiting for a big scene with the wedding a la Downton but it was not to be..

fancyanother Tue 13-Nov-12 22:24:16

Yes I watched it. I was waiting for a more interesting ending too. What happened at the wedding? What was the fallout? What was the mystery re: the wife? What was in the black book? A bit of a disappointing ending, unless another series is being commissioned.

oohlaalaa Tue 13-Nov-12 22:42:01

There's another series for the fallout. I rather like Katherine Glendenning... She's so conniving.

SilverSixpence Tue 13-Nov-12 22:51:20

Oh good news grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies Tue 13-Nov-12 22:54:01

Ah lovely ending! Moray is quite delicious when he actually smiles grin

BackforGood Tue 13-Nov-12 22:59:27

Haven't seen todays, but have been enjoying this. Just can't understand why it's tucked away on a Tuesday and not broadcast on a Sunday when I should imagine it would have doubled it's viewing figures. Us period drama lovers don't tend to look out for things on Tuesdays! smile

Agree about Katherine's age - it's been annoying me throughout. Surely she should be looking a good 10 - 15 years younger ? confused

Thanks for the spoiler!!! Great!

Anyway, loved tonights and I cried for Miss Audrey. Katherine is one nasty piece of work.

Right, having read the rest of this's only loosely based on the book, isn't it? grin

Still haven't seen it. Have put the DVD on my Christmas wish list instead.

Is there really another series where has that been confirmed? Off to google cos i'm loving the paradise n put the book on my xmas list!

LittleTyga Wed 14-Nov-12 17:24:58

Was that the last one? Oh no! SO it ended with Katherine threatening Denise - so the wedding must be in the next series?

What happened with Jonas? Was working and had one eye on the tv!

fancyanother Wed 14-Nov-12 17:33:25

He was let go. Looked lingeringly in the river. I thought he was going to jump in but he just threw the mystery book in and walked off. They had better do another series. There was some rubbish on a few years ago called Defying Gravity which evidently I was the only viewer of. They cancelled it mid series and I haven't yet got a sense of closure!

hattymattie Wed 14-Nov-12 19:12:01

Hell hath no fury ...*secondhand*.

I do hope there's a second series - really got into it having found it a bit boring to start with. Agree a Sunday night slot would be better (before Homeland though).

2rebecca Wed 14-Nov-12 21:48:12

I've been loving this, this followed by Cookoo was excellent Tuesday viewing, now they've both finished. I read the book as grew inpatient with the series. It is quite different. Mouret is more sympathetic as he is less of a sexual predator and Miss Glendenning is a concubine much like Violetta in La Traviata which explains her being early middle aged and unmarried. He never gets engaged to her in the book.
Denise is better in the TV adaptation, she was stupid and pious in the book, forever giving money to one brother to spend on married women whilst she and her little brother starved and she refused to put out until married. The double standards v her brother and herself never rang true. Doing away with the brothers and her uncle's miserable family vastly improved the story. There is endless descriptive crap in the book as well, and it's nowhere near as much fun.
I don't know that I can be bothered with series 2 if it's just an evil Glendennings v the Paradise saga. Miss Glendenning turned into too much of a caricature this week, she had some dignity earlier in the series.

LadyMaryChristmas Wed 14-Nov-12 21:51:49

We're waiting for the next series blush

LittleTyga Wed 14-Nov-12 21:59:56

Thanks fancy Aww poor Jonas

alemci Wed 14-Nov-12 22:05:18

i thought this was great. Had to laugh the way everyone called Moray 'Moray' as oppose to his first name even his fiancee - never Mr etc... then we find out his christian name is John - bit of a let down.

he reminded me of Mr Claypole in Rentaghost TBH - showing my age.

Hush thy mouth mr claypole indeed!! No way ive been swooning over john mouray. Rentaghost. Tut.

alemci Wed 14-Nov-12 22:30:36

it was his voice and mannerisms. but you know who i was talking about.

YouBrokeMySmoulder Wed 14-Nov-12 22:36:07

I have mentally put him in the Cupboard of Lust but he is far too young. Not tat have googled or anything ahem.

leosayershair Thu 15-Nov-12 03:38:06

Mr Claypole - love it!

His voice at times reminded me of Douglas Reynholm from the IT crowd!

fancyanother Thu 15-Nov-12 17:20:13

2rebecca I'd love it if it's full of a Glendenning/Paradise battle- especially if it's only a vengeful nutty Catherine plotting away ( not so much that she turns into Morgana from Merlin though...) and her sensible but wet father indulging her. Somehow I hope it's not happily ever after for Moray and Denise. She is far too good for him.

SalvatoreGirl Thu 15-Nov-12 17:35:52

I watched it every week and enjoyed i - I'm a period drama lover too.
What happened at the end - is the wedding off or on? What was in Jonas's black book ?
Hope there is a second series soon.

He needs to get Jonas to fill Katherine's pockets with pebbles too! Dont forget we also have a very jealous Clara in the background too for next time.

oohlaalaa Thu 15-Nov-12 20:11:20

I reckon the second series will start with Moray and Denise married, and us piecing together everything that has happened in between.

Moray is so swoonworthy. I loved his smile as he kissed Denise in the final scene.

YouBrokeMySmoulder Thu 15-Nov-12 20:15:26

I am going to watch it again < sad>

I enjoyed the series (have never read the book) but I was hoping that when Denise left she would end up creating an empire with her uncle to rival the paradise

MrsBovary Sun 18-Nov-12 21:58:57

I read the book at last (The Ladies Paradise) this weekend whilst travelling.

They seem to have taken a few ideas from the book and made a bit of a mess, quite frankly. Mouret never seemed in any danger of marrying (or even proposing to) Catherine (Henriette) or of losing the Paradise to her father, as in the book she wasn't the Baron's daughter, just a wealthy, unrelated, widow. Oh and she was 35, apparently a little older than Mouret, so Elaine Cassidy was exactly the right age to play the part.
Denise was a far more sympathetic character in the book too, she had the charge of her two younger brothers, went through some extreme poverty and hardship, and was sacked very early on (one of her brothers was mistaken for her lover). There was none of the 'little champion' nonsense either, or ideas, Denise was merely a good salesperson and promoted quickly on her return.

Clara ran away (Marguerite was the character with the child), and her uncle's business had failed by the end, his wife and daughter having died.
I don't see how they could get another series out of it? I hope not. I've seen the characters mentioned only briefly in other Zola novels.

Mollydoggerson Tue 20-Nov-12 12:44:49

Can anyone tell me what the very last scene was, I recorded the sshow aand it cut off just as Moray walked downstairs in his morning suit.

Then I think there was a clip where he ran.

Did he run to Denise, did they runn off together, jilting Cathering at the alter?

MrsBovary Tue 20-Nov-12 12:51:58

You didn't miss very much. Yes, he ran to Denise and they embraced. Lady G was shown dressed in her wedding dress with her father, in, I think, her own house. The details were left to the imagination, though obviously he marries Denise instead.

Mollydoggerson Tue 20-Nov-12 12:53:22

Was Lady G all miserable looking?

MrsBovary Tue 20-Nov-12 13:14:38

No, it just showed her as a nervous looking, expectant, bride, walking down the stairs with her father. Nothing more. Mouret (in the Paradise still) appears to be making a decision about who to go to.

Mollydoggerson Tue 20-Nov-12 13:24:17

Oh I will look forward to the next series.

Ohh So frustrated. I must be the only person in the word that didn't want him running off to his 'Little Champion'

He made a promise to marry the spoilt one, he should have gone through with it and saved the Paradise!

I have been shouting at the TV for the last few weeks, every time she looks longingly at him or he her grin

Oh I don't want him to marry Denise either miss she's far too good for him.

Nor me, too young and full of life for him.

BarbecuedBillygoats Wed 21-Nov-12 12:30:10

I missed the last one (and on I player)
And idea how I can watch it?
