I have watched about 5 episodes of season 1 and am struggling to get into it. I love American politics ( Daily Show is my fav show ) but feel it hasn't dated well.. Is it worth sticking with it? Will it get better it ran forever so people must have loved it?

gingermcflea Mon 01-Oct-12 09:09:09

Oh hell yes. Yes!
I think it has held up really well.
If you're finding Season 1 hard to get in to, you might want to try skipping ahead to the first couple of episodes of Season 2. They are dramatic and fascinating and also give you the background of everyone and how they came to be working there. You could then go back and finish off Season 1 before continuing on with Season 2 (which is completely fabulous).
Oh I love West Wing.

MadamGazelleIsMyMum Mon 01-Oct-12 09:11:28

YES!! Do stick with it, it is the best thing I have ever seen and am STILL sad it is over! It does look a little dated now, but I essentially just recycle the whole thing over and over (i.e. finish 7 and start 1 again). Persevere, it is wonderful.

overthemill Mon 01-Oct-12 11:04:46

oh no, you MUST stick with it! I am rewatching from the very beginning at the moment. I think tehre are couple (about when Mrs Bartlett turns up) that are not so pacy but please perservere. It is an intelligent watch and great dialogue.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers Mon 01-Oct-12 11:05:57

Absolutely. One of the best tv series ever!

Yes, season 1 is very hard to get into. Wait until there is more CJ!

BoerWarKids Mon 01-Oct-12 11:35:57

Stick with it! It's one of the best TV series ever smile

BeckAndCall Mon 01-Oct-12 12:22:36

Oh my goodness! What a thing to say here!

Worth sticking with? Many a MNetter thinks it she best TV ever made, me included.

Just joking with you.... Keep at it and when you've seen it all 7 or more times, you'll know what we mean....

<awaits the arrival of Cavemum, Fiderer, CJ and BartletforAmerica and friedns
to the thread>

Piggychunk Mon 01-Oct-12 13:07:43

Wow ok looks like I will give it longer grin
I have seen so many tv series.. Lost, Sopranos, Wire, True Blood , Madmen , Broadwalk and many more but this has been the longest for me to get into. I will stick with it though!

I have also just got Luther from love film so I am about to start watching that .. Can you tell I don't get out much!

BeckAndCall Mon 01-Oct-12 13:10:12

Don't worry, piggy, you're in good company in this section on the 'not getting out much' front!

CelstialNavigation Mon 01-Oct-12 13:20:29

The real problem with the West Wing is that TV is never the same again - your standards are raised and nothing ever matches up to it again. So you become fated to watch it on a rolling loop through the seasons like MadamGazelle above...

Just apply yourself to watching it. Fall for one of the main characters, that'll help.

BloooCowWonders Mon 01-Oct-12 13:24:57

can't add anything else - just watch!

And maybe have the subtitles on. Dh and I kept going 'eh?' so put them on and it's even better smile

ajandjjmum Mon 01-Oct-12 13:30:58

So glad to see this thread. DH and I have watched the first four episodes, and are like looking at each other thinking 'really?!!!' We will stick with it! smile

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 01-Oct-12 19:11:40

Oh you must stick with it! It does take a while to get going, and lose the cheesy incidental music, but from about halfway through Season 1 onwards it is nothing short of a Tour de Force grin

Inertia Mon 01-Oct-12 19:18:27

Absolutely stick with it. My favourite TV programme ever. Seasons 2- 4 are the best IMO.

If you follow Celestial's advice...

(Spoiler alert!!!!)

... don't do what I did and fall for Sam because heartbreak will follow!

MrsJohnDeere Mon 01-Oct-12 19:50:34

Yes, you must stick with it! THE best thing ever on TV.

tribpot Mon 01-Oct-12 19:54:57

Keep going - it's worth it! So many great moments ahead. Has Joey Lucas arrived yet?

LittleBearPad Mon 01-Oct-12 19:56:42

Definitely stick with it. It was wonderful

Osmiornica Mon 01-Oct-12 20:00:07

Yes, yes and yes. I took a few episodes before I really got into it but have just finished the box set for the second time. It's fab.

SkiBumMum Mon 01-Oct-12 20:01:49

envy you're only just starting

chipsandpeas Mon 01-Oct-12 20:02:20

yes yes yes one of the best shows ever

CalamityKate Mon 01-Oct-12 20:08:57

What's it about then?

Wolfcub Mon 01-Oct-12 20:14:45

Yes absolutely stick with it, it gets better in season two when the most annoying character drops off the face of the planet. DH and I watch the whole thing once every year.

Arithmeticulous Mon 01-Oct-12 20:16:04

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 03-Oct-12 08:14:53

Have you watched any more? At the very least stick with the whole of Season 1. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but you'll want to start Season 2 right after wink

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers Wed 03-Oct-12 08:21:52

wolfcub I know! That character is really annoying.

Keep going. We love it - and yes we loop it. We're just starting Season 6 again - probably the 50th time..........

notyummy Wed 03-Oct-12 08:27:59

Good grief! If you can stick with the Wire (which is genius, but certainly not an easy viewing option) or Mad Men (beautiful but....erm....slow) then you can def stick with the WW. Heresy, woman!! But yes- carry on.

ZombiesAreClammyDodgers Wed 03-Oct-12 08:32:03

celestial couldn't agree more! In fact I think I'll watch some again only for maybe the 5th time!
I was so gutted when i had finished watching the whole thing because there was nothing more to watch anew. Got the book though- episode companion which explains many concepts and incidents through out the series. I think the book covered till series 3 though.

TitWillow Wed 03-Oct-12 08:32:35

And don't jump ahead to the first two episodes of season 2! They do give you more background, but you will totally spoil the ending of season 1, which is totally amazing!

Gosh the ending of season 1 is some of the best of the whole programme - you don't want to miss that.

I've just finished all 7 seasons and tell you, you MUST continue smile

IslaValargeone Wed 03-Oct-12 08:41:34

Another one for you must continue.
Season one is worth watching just for the 'Josh meets Joey Lucas' episode alone.
Cj's root canal..priceless!

cheaperthantherapy Wed 03-Oct-12 08:48:59

Best series ever!!!! I must ask for the box set for Christmas smile

Piggychunk Thu 04-Oct-12 14:29:58

Actually we watched 2 more last night stockard channing finally appeared was wondering when I would see her and it wasn't too bad. Looking at the Discs to come on love film there are so many more episodes to go for season 1 so will 100% contuine .. Actually all these amazing reviews has made me excitied to watch the rest

overthemill Thu 04-Oct-12 14:55:29

oh good, and about to watch another episode before dd arrives home from school grin

FrankelSaysRelax Thu 04-Oct-12 15:43:02

Piggy, Stockard Channing is very in and out until Season 3, when she becomes a regular.

Glad you're sticking with it, if nothing else you'll look at the actual US elections in a whole new light grin

WheresMyCow Thu 04-Oct-12 15:50:25

We've been doing some decorating and everything has been packed away, but we're going to dig out the season one boxset and start watching it again tonight. Stay with it, it's definitely worth it.

Nothing else to add except to say...
I vote Jed Bartlett grin

Did anyone see the other WW thread, there's a YouTube reunion thingy featuring most of the case. DP and I oohed and aahed...

FuzzyGOLDwood Thu 04-Oct-12 20:16:33

Sorry for shouting blush I've watched it from start to end loads a few times and it is the best thing ever fact! grin
I still want to be CJ when I grow up.

I can't agree! If you aren't grabbed by that opening episode, why the hell not?

Wolfcub - wow! We're avid box-setters but you set a new standard! How long does it take you?
