I can't find the old thread, so thought I'd start a new one grin

Is anyone else following the US election and finding themselves comparing everything to TWW?!

I found this on the BBC website and was impressed to realise I knew what most of them were, thanks to TWW!

grin

NewGirlInTown Sat 08-Sep-12 00:22:18

Yes definitely. I always wonder, what would Jed Bartlet do, and how long did it take Toby to write that speech...

<Sob>

How I miss The West Wing

Northernlurkerisbackatwork Sat 08-Sep-12 00:24:19

Did you see the Democrats had a Santos lookalike speaking?

AllHailTheOlympiansMumsnet (MNHQ) Sat 08-Sep-12 00:25:30

You're not the only one...

FrankelSaysRelax Sat 08-Sep-12 10:20:21

Ah, there you all are! I was starting to think you'd all be whisked away by the Secret Service grin

I read something interesting last night. Apparently earlier this year the US military admitted that they do have a secret military space shuttle shock

Yama Sat 08-Sep-12 10:25:27

The other day I was trying to remember who said to her husband that she couldn't be with him because he was too sad. It was Andie to Toby.

Random scenes pop into my head now and then. Then I really think about the scene, the emotions, what it all means.

FrankelSaysRelax Sat 08-Sep-12 18:58:23

Foo Fighters played the Democratic National Convention last week! Tad familiar, no?! wink

Fiderer Sun 09-Sep-12 07:30:28

grin at new thread, I lost the old one too, it was very long - loads of TWW on MN. CaveMum did a list of states won by Santos and Vinick.

I was looking at this and noted Nevada is still fairly close.

Fiderer Sun 09-Sep-12 07:34:35

That worked in preview - tried again but only the Vinick results come up. Santos is a scroll or two up. <applauds CaveMum again>

Here's a trivia question:

What was 'Operation Resting Eagle'?

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 09-Sep-12 08:19:02

Fiderer - tis I CaveMum wink, I've had a name change grin

Fiderer Sun 09-Sep-12 08:35:12

grin Didn't recognise you in your equine finery. I was going to shout out in Chat "Oi CaveMum - new WW thread!"

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 09-Sep-12 08:41:18

Someone suggested the name to me as I wouldn't shut up about the mighty beast on another thread, so I thought I'd keep it till the end of the season. Once he retires I will revert back, or come up with a new variation grin

Just been reading back through that other thread, we had some good discussions/debates. Here's hoping we can continue!

On your other comment, has anyone told Josh whoever is running the Obama campaign that they need more ad buy in Florida and Ohio, never mind Nevada! wink

hattymattie Sun 09-Sep-12 08:44:19

Just finished series 4 where Zoey is kidnapped. I love Will Bailey.

Fiderer Sun 09-Sep-12 08:46:51

The Obama campaign needs someone from outside the Beltway, us! Sure we can tell fact from fiction. Illinois is looking safe this time so Josh doesn't have to worry about ad buys there.

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 09-Sep-12 09:00:32

It is with disappointment that I read this on IMDB:

In 2011, actor Kal Penn told The New York Times that on the first night of his job in the Obama Administration's White House Office of Public Engagement, he was at the office until 11 P.M., and suggested to his colleagues that they order in some Chinese food. When his new coworkers told him that ordering food deliveries is not actually allowed in the White House, Penn's response was: "but they do it on West Wing!"

Nooooooooo! My illusions are shattered!

wink

changeforthebetter Sun 09-Sep-12 09:03:15

Northernlurker - a Santos lookalike?? shock name or link purleease!! grin <faints> grin

Northernlurkerisbackatwork Sun 09-Sep-12 09:36:19

OPeration Resting Eagle was Bartlett's plan to have an early call and then go back to sleep for an hour. Abby wrecked it by delaying the call.

Hatty - don't get too keen.

Santos lookalike - is married I'm afraid. Wife not blonde. Otherwise Santos

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 09-Sep-12 10:29:08

Anyone else still get confused about the Democrats being blue and Republicans red?! Surely it should be the other way round!

Hassled Sun 09-Sep-12 10:34:01

I've been thinking we need a nice new shiny WW thread - and yes, it's a true fact that behind the scenes in the current US election are Bruno Gianelli and Josh. They're right there.

EverythingInMjiniature Sun 09-Sep-12 10:41:59

Oh oh, I've just finished ww series 7 after watching the whole box set for the first time. DP and I were actually obsessed. There is now a hole in my life and I have no way of filling it sad

Fiderer Sun 09-Sep-12 10:51:23

Everything you can fill it with this thread until you're ready to start again with Season 1.

Northernlurker grin yes, I had to replay it to hear what he'd called his little plan.

Pancakeflipper Sun 09-Sep-12 11:36:14

I am onto series 5. Cor it's a corker already. Oh dearie me Leo. But still missing Sam Seabourne in his white shirts with a Tshirt underneath.

Northernlurkerisbackatwork Sun 09-Sep-12 13:33:11

Dh and I work our way through then start over again. Just mid season 4 atm.

changeforthebetter Sun 09-Sep-12 14:49:37

Thanks Northern. I actually read that article and the thought crossed my mind but he's not my kind of Santos really grin

I rewatched the election S3 or 4 <brain freeze> How did Andi get pregnant. Was it IVF or did she have sex with Toby. On election night she refers to him as "my man". Quite a few of my S3 discs seem to have got scratched which is a bit gutting sad

Northernlurkerisbackatwork Sun 09-Sep-12 15:19:06

It was IVF. They were doing IVF during the marriage and the implication is that he carried on with that although the mariage ended. The 'my man' statement is a little ambiguous but reflects their mutual commitment - even though not in a partnership.

Northernlurkerisbackatwork Sun 09-Sep-12 15:19:59

Don't want to spoil but if you've seen season 7 - remember what she does at the end - for her children but also for somebody she cares very much about.

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 09-Sep-12 15:20:59

I don't think they ever reveal how Molly and Huck came into being. They were having IVF before their marriage ended, but my personal opinion is that they had a brief reconciliation which resulted in pregnancy.
At one stage Sam (or maybe Josh) says something along the lines of "Why don't you get that nice girl pregnant?" and Toby responds "I did.". That suggests to me that the other WWers knew they'd been seeing each other again.

EverythingInMjiniature Sun 09-Sep-12 18:01:08

I still think one of the most heart wrenching moments is when andie says she wont marry him because he is too sad... He is sad but that's toby

Apart from ''he was so proud of you, josh'
<wail>

Northernlurkerisbackatwork Sun 09-Sep-12 18:21:01

THere is NO WAY Andie and Toby had sex. Apart from the fact that they are clearly too far apart emotionally to be lovers, it's quite clear in the flashbacks that are shown and in some of the things that Andie says that she has had immense difficulty becoming pregnant and carrying to term. Toby knows it's twins way before the ultrasound you see them have later on in pregnancy and indeed before 12 weeks. We know this because Andie says to him that she hasn't announced it 'because you don't in the first 12 weeks'. Also from a storyline pov - if the babies had resulted from a one night stand that would have been a completely different story - and it would have been shown to us. No point showing the IVF parts of their journey if we're not meant to infer from it some meaning.

EverythingInMjiniature Sun 09-Sep-12 18:43:27

I always thought they showed us the IVF to help explain the break up, but I agree it would have been a totally different story if they had sex,and just seems ridiculous!

What I don't understand is if Toby knew she was continuing the IVF or not? Is he surprised by the twins?

Fiderer Mon 10-Sep-12 03:42:45

I assumed it was IVF too. Agree with Northernlurker about them being too far apart to be lovers - think Toby would have but Andy not.

No idea why but I thought she had had embryos implanted which hadn't worked and then when she does get pregnant, it was from frozen embryos from that time. That would also explain how Toby knew it was twins so early.

Fiderer Mon 10-Sep-12 06:47:36

To start off the week on a high note. Sam, Toby and the wonderful Bruno Gianelli.

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 10-Sep-12 07:14:03

I convinced DH to start all over again last night, we did the first 4 episodes of Season 1. I love this exchange between CJ and Josh:

Josh: A couple of things for you to bear in mind. First of all, he didn't know she was a call girl when he slept with her. He didn't pay her. He didn't participate in, have knowledge of, or witness anything illegal. Or for that matter, unethical, amoral, or suspect.
C.J.: Okay. A couple things for you to bear in mind. None of that matters on Hard Copy!
Josh: You're overreacting.
C.J.: Am I?
Josh: Yes.
C.J.: As women are prone to do.
Josh: That's not what I meant.
C.J.: That's always what you mean.
Josh: You know what, C.J., I really think I'm the best judge of what I mean, you paranoid Berkeley shiksa feminista! ...whoa, that was way too far.
C.J.: No, no. Well, I've got a staff meeting to go to and so do you, you elitist Harvard fascist missed-the-deans-list-two-semesters-in-a-row Yankee jackass!
Josh: Feel better getting that off your chest there, C.J.?
C.J.: I'm a whole new woman.
Josh: You look like a million bucks, by the way.
C.J.: Don't try to make up with me.

grin

changeforthebetter Mon 10-Sep-12 19:05:54

Thanks for the Toby/Andy clarification grin I shall file it under "Mandy & Other WW mysteries"

Awesome writing, isn't it Frankel

Seabright Mon 10-Sep-12 19:36:04

Glad to see a new thread! Am living on a boat in France with no TV, just DVD's. Have TWW sitting and waiting for us! Third time of watching.

When I grow up, I want to be CJ. With Donna's hair.

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 10-Sep-12 20:19:53

Anyone else think the bloke that comes to the WW to talk to CJ about Pluie on Big Block of Cheese Day is David Mitchell's long-lost twin?

grin

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 10-Sep-12 20:20:09

Oops, that should have been grin

EverythingInMjiniature Mon 10-Sep-12 20:47:06

The first big block of cheese day is a great episode, and the first time zoey and Charlie meet... Watched it the other day they look so young!

Fiderer Tue 11-Sep-12 08:54:41

I loved the 'big block of cheese' days. Wish we'd seen more of the 'cheese appointments'.

Total crackpot day grin

And yes, Frankel, he does look like DM's twin.

Another trivia question, after Pluie's story came the story of a bear. What was her name?

changeforthebetter Tue 11-Sep-12 15:02:32

Seabright I want to be on a boat in France with just WW to watch <envious sigh grin>

I love CJ - she is the absolute best. She would be my friend you know, if she were real grin

OsmiornicaGold Tue 11-Sep-12 18:37:06

I'm on the last series (again) and am trying to suss out why Toby did it, if in fact he did at all. I know the actor has said he wasn't happy with the storyline and didn't believe the character would do it. Who would he be covering for?

FrankelSaysRelax Tue 11-Sep-12 18:43:53

I think the generally accepted theory was that Toby did it because he would have expected them to go and get his brother David has he been one of the trapped astronauts.

You're right though, it didn't sit with the character.

CelstialNavigation Tue 11-Sep-12 23:46:52

Richard Schieff was the one who said he didn't believe Toby would ever do that (in a million years) and he believed he was covering for someone else. I can't quite figure it either.

Frankel, they do send someone (ie usually Donna) out the gate to get pizza in later seasons - I think they have to meet delivery people outside the gates.

And when CJ and Charlie engage in warfare, she has left the building to go get pizza, I assume to outside the gates, as she has her coat on, and she phones the pizza place before that (tries to use her glued phone). So delivery but not to the actual door I think.

I love their prank war, especially when she realises just how far Charlie is going to go.

Fiderer Wed 12-Sep-12 07:46:38

The prank war is great. Love the fact that Charlie wins, he came a long way from the wide-eyed innocent.

"Now we're playing for keeps" grin

Pinkmumma Wed 12-Sep-12 07:58:08

Going to have to watch from the start again! I live the WW bring it back -

Pinkmumma Wed 12-Sep-12 07:58:38

Love the west wing

EverythingInMjiniature Wed 12-Sep-12 21:17:18

Just watched the stackhouse filibuster. Season 2 writing was soo good!

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 12-Sep-12 21:20:05

EverythingInMjiniature Thu 13-Sep-12 21:38:59

Frankel is that the episode where they try to have sex for ages and everyone comes in and tony announces Andy's pregnancy?

CelstialNavigation Thu 13-Sep-12 21:41:40

ITSOTG, which has to be followed by The Midterms (so I can see Josh get better). And because he said "What's next"

Which has to be followed by Noel (because of Josh and Leo) which has to be followed by The Leadership Breakfast (so I can see Josh get better again and start a fire with Sam).

Then back to In This White House and on from there so I don't miss out all the amusing Ainsley bits.

That is my comfort viewing.

<CJ, you fell into the pool there...>

FrankelSaysRelax Thu 13-Sep-12 21:52:59

Everything, no its the episode in Season 1 when we find out about the MS. The President collapses in the oval office with flu and the First Lady cancels a trip to look after him.

CelstialNavigation Thu 13-Sep-12 22:04:18

My favorite foreplay-talk scene is when she sends Charlie in to tell him she is passing him fit to have sex with her after the shooting.

Fiderer Fri 14-Sep-12 08:59:16

I'd love to see a "Big Block of Cheese Day" at MNHQ.

Seeing what an 'ordinary' <guffaw> day involves, it'd be, to quote CJ, a "sight to see, I mean a sight to see" grin

FrankelSaysRelax Fri 14-Sep-12 09:15:20

grin @ the idea of a Big Block of Cheese Day at MNHQ. I have a vision of a queue of MNers outside HQ with their various campaigns.

OliviaLMumsnet (MNHQ) Fri 14-Sep-12 10:19:16

WHY WHY WHY do our cousins across the pond say "could care less" when they mean "could NOT care less"?

Fiderer Fri 14-Sep-12 10:23:02

I know. I hesitated, prevaricated, did other -ated things but felt obliged to quote as said.
<wrings hands>
<stops as it hurts as is daft>

But, it's Toby. We must excuse and endure.
<noble> <and more than a bit patronising>

"Big Block of Cheese Day at MNHQ" is a good idea, though, Olivia, heh?

FrankelSaysRelax Sat 15-Sep-12 17:39:12

Just watched CJ do The Jackal grin

That is all.

Yama Sat 15-Sep-12 19:43:42

Dh and I had about a half hour conversation about why they say 'could care less'.

And Frankal - 'The Jackal' shouldn't be good but just is.

Pancakeflipper Sat 15-Sep-12 20:09:20

The other night DP was watching the news. It was on about the American elections.

He looked puzzled then said "I wondered who he was...". It was Obama.

He said "I still think the President is Martin Sheen. And I know they never think of a single word they say. Toby and Josh do it all."

Skelacia Sun 16-Sep-12 11:18:36

We're just watching the last few episodes of S7 in our third (I think) go around. I don't want it to end because I know DH will poo poo rewatching it straight away. sad

FrankelSaysRelax Sun 16-Sep-12 11:20:47

We had a Season 1-athon last night and finished it off. I'm just putting Shadow of the Gunman into the DVD player and settling down with a cup of coffee grin

DoreensEatingHerSoreen Sun 16-Sep-12 17:48:20

Did anyone else click on Frankel's link in the OP and get a little confused as to why Dan Quayle is being described as "young" and "handsome"?

Agreed - my friends think that I am all kinds of clever when it comes to US politics and elections and I never let on that this is all because I watch TWW and they have no idea how much richer and fulfilling their lives could be don't grin

SophySinclair Sun 16-Sep-12 20:13:39

really interesting biopic on iplayer called The Clintons. It has Dee Dee Myers, upon whom CJ Cregg is based. Vay interesting.

LandUnderWave Mon 17-Sep-12 03:34:30

Another WW addict checking in here. Currently on mat leave (up feeding 2 week old dd as we speak) and using it as opportunity for epic full season re-watch. So excited. Watched Noel today, one of my faves.

Will try and find link but did anyone else hear rumour they are making a WW movie? Like at the moment??

DoreensEatingHerSoreen Mon 17-Sep-12 19:00:19

Sadly that is just a rumor sad

It was just Will Bailey winding people up on twitter.

I do love to stare at this picture and pretend that's it's real though

LandUnderWave Mon 17-Sep-12 20:34:28

Nooooooo! Gutted is not true. Hey ho, back to the box sets it is. Do love that pic though grin

EverythingInMjiniature Thu 20-Sep-12 01:40:47

And am I the only one who thinks President Bartlett bears more than a passing resemblance to this guy

[prepares to be sent to whatever the American equivalent of The Tower of London is]

I must say, CJ and I look goooooooood, stunning in fact, esp CJ. Josh has aged in a bad way, and got pudgy. Bartlet is still swoony, as is Toby.

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 24-Sep-12 07:16:00

Thank you to whoever it was that drew my attention to The Clinton's biography/documentary. I watched the first two episodes on iplayer yesterday, it's very interesting, and I found myself saying "ok, so he's Josh; he must be Bruno; he must be Haffley" etc grin

Interestingly you can draw a lot of parallels between events in Clinton's Presidency and Bartlett's - lack of military know-how, federal shutdown, etc.

Also the photo of an 18yo Clinton shaking JFK's hand was pretty cool! I didn't know about that [disclaimer, I was 11 when Clinton's first term began so don't remember much of his early years]

FrankelSaysRelax Tue 25-Sep-12 20:57:55

[talks to self] Guess which episode I've just watched:

"You're a son-of-a-bitch, You know that? She bought her first new car and You hit her with a drunk driver. What, was that supposed to be funny? "You can't conceive, nor can I, the appalling strangeness of the mercy of God," says Graham Greene. I don't know whose ass he was kissing there 'cause I think You're just vindictive. What was Josh Lyman? A warning shot? That was my son. What did I ever do to Yours except praise His glory and praise His name? There's a tropical storm that's gaining speed and power. They say we haven't had a storm this bad since You took out that tender ship of mine in the north Atlantic last year, 68 crew. Do You know what a tender ship does? Fixes the other ships. Doesn't even carry guns, just goes around, fixes the other ships and delivers the mail, that's all it can do. Gratias Tibi ago, domine (I give thanks to You, O Lord). Yes, I lied. It was a sin. I've committed many sins. Have I displeased You, You feckless thug? Three point eight million new jobs, that wasn't good? Bailed out Mexico, increased foreign trade, 30 million new acres of land for conservation, put Mendoza on the bench, we're not fighting a war, I've raised three children... that's not enough to buy me out of the doghouse? Haec credam a deo pio? A deo iusto? A deo scito? Cruciatus in crucem! Tuus in terra servus nuntius fui officium perfeci. Cruciatus in crucem. Eas in crucem! (Am I to believe those were the acts of a loving God? A just God? A wise God? To hell with Your punishments! I was Your servant on Earth - I spread Your word and did Your work. To hell with your punishments! To hell with You!) [walks away from the altar, lights a cigarette, takes one puff, throws it to the ground, puts it out with his foot and proceeds to leave] You get Hoynes!"

[perfection]

Fiderer Wed 26-Sep-12 07:39:01

Mmm, I wonder which episode that was grin

Here are trivia questions inspired by my watching "The Dogs of War" last night. Name the following animals:

1. President Walken's dog
2. The 2 turkeys in CJ's office. Which one did she choose to be pardoned?
3. Amy's dog
4. CJ's Goldfish.

Wonder if the poster who was looking for a goldfish bowl like CJ's ever found one?

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 26-Sep-12 07:54:46

Walken's dog was Betsy
One of the turkey's was Troy
Can't remember Amy's dog
CJ's goldfish was Gail

Hmm.

1. Close but no
2. yes, but his fellow contestant?
3. <tut>

frasersmummy Wed 26-Sep-12 13:54:38

I am just catching up with "the american president" film from last night

Its too weird watching all these west wing cast members playing all the wrong parts ..

Hold on...........is there..........A......NEW ........SERIES.......Of my fav programme?cant be bothered to read whole thread. I watched all 7(?)seasons over a month (averaged 4episodes a night)a couple of years ago. Was bereft when it ended (similar to post Olympic void.....but worse!!) please please tell me it's true, you have made my day!!!!!!my fav all time show!

Oh dear....now v disappointed because I think I've got the wrong end of the stick.
Btw my best ever bit is when Josh goes on stag night and wears weird fisherman trousers all day, and when Ashley was drinking cocktails in her office in a dressing gown and What's his name sneaks up on her and she throws it all over the place.........ooooh may have to get the box set out again.

prettybird Fri 28-Sep-12 18:41:10

Thanks for posting the link to the "new" bit of West Wing. CJ is looking great! smile

You've now forced us to get out our boxed set and watch the entire series again hmm

Do you think we can do it before the election and still have a life ? grin

FrankelSaysRelax Fri 28-Sep-12 19:05:47

Of course you can prettybird, I only started my rewatch a few weeks ago and am now on Season 3 grin [needs to get a life]

prettybird Fri 28-Sep-12 19:37:20

We did manage 6 episodes yesterday blush

Started on the main TV and subjected ds to it and then took it through to the bedroom and watched a few more grin

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 01-Oct-12 19:10:11

Bumping before we slip off the page grin

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 01-Oct-12 20:14:27

Just to say that I have been watching that clintons thing on Iplayer series catch up - tis vg. you can see all of clinton's staff (speechwriter/DCOS/press sec) and your'e just listing the WW characters.
grin

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 01-Oct-12 20:18:48

Same here Olivia. To me, Newt Gingrich is Speaker Haffley grin

sayanythingrogerjustrogerme Tue 02-Oct-12 16:46:00

Has anyone watched The Newsroom? It's Sorkin's latest, but it didn't get great reviews, although it was renewed for a second season unlike Studio 60. I've no idea if it's been broadcast in the UK, I've...ahem...got hold of a few episodes, but I haven't watched any yet. Is it any good?

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet (MNHQ) Tue 02-Oct-12 20:03:42

YY it was on Sky Atlantic
Other people had ....ahem.. got hold of some episodes
It is good
Has Emily Mortimer in it, who is more than a little vexing and there is lots of unresolved romantic tension in a Josh/Donna/Leo/Jordan kind of way.

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 03-Oct-12 11:18:22

Don't forget, it's the first televised debate in actual election tonight.

Fiderer Wed 03-Oct-12 11:24:44

I missed the Santos/Vinick debate when it was broadcast. It was live, that I know but was it unscripted? I found it a bit dull, tbh, I was expecting flames and soaring oratory.

Fiderer Wed 03-Oct-12 11:31:35

<snort> at Emily Mortimer being "more than a little vexing" from OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet.

cf: "Ann Coulter had slightly conservative tendencies"

Admire Olivia's optimism shining benevolently through her new name though.

sayanything Wed 03-Oct-12 19:30:15

Oh good, I'll add it to my maternity leave watch list after I finish season 4 of Masterchef Australia (I have eclectic taste me).

What are the odds DS2 will time his cluster feed frenzy with tonight's debate?

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 03-Oct-12 19:57:43
Fiderer Wed 03-Oct-12 20:31:11

Dunno why you're blushing, Frankel, that's my idea of a good night in!

I've played it several times already wink We'll need a thread with lots of wine and/or coffee for November. Electoral votes pens at the ready...

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 03-Oct-12 21:03:25

I have just found the RL DeeDeeMyers on twitter.
<swoon>

Hassled Wed 03-Oct-12 21:05:39

Fiderer - I don't know about unscripted but they did do it live, twice - once for East Coast time, one for the West Coast. It is amazing TV.

Fiderer Wed 03-Oct-12 21:08:05

Ask her if they ever had/considered a Big Block of Cheese Day grin

Then suggest one to Justine...

Fiderer Wed 03-Oct-12 21:12:40

x-post. Hassled: I knew about the 2 live "takes" - I just thought it would be sparkier. Maybe I was spoiled by Bartlet vs Ritchie grin

CJCregg Wed 03-Oct-12 21:35:27

Evening grin

Just marking my place so I can come back later.

In Real Life I have recently avoided having to have root canal ...

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet (MNHQ) Wed 03-Oct-12 21:39:38

Fiderer

Ask her if they ever had/considered a Big Block of Cheese Day grin

Then suggest one to Justine...

MNHQ Big block of cheese hour, tomorrow at 1pm

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 03-Oct-12 22:16:06

grin @ OliviaMN, it's nice to know we Wingnuts wield power round these parts wink

CJCregg Wed 03-Oct-12 23:12:34

It IS a big block of cheese day shock

OliviaPeaceAndLoveMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 04-Oct-12 00:08:25

OliviaMumsnet: : I'm not obsessed. I'm just a fan, and I care.
JustineMumsnet : I'm a fan. I'm a sports fan, I'm a music fan, and I'm a West Wing fan. All of them but here's what I don't do. Tell me if any of this sounds familiar. Let's list our 10 favorite episodes. Let's list our least favorite episodes. Let's list our favorite characters. Let's spend a weekend talking about Josh falling in love with Donna and then let's do it again? That's not being a fan. That's having a fetish, and I don't have a problem with that except you can't bring your hobbies into work. OK?
OliviaMumsnet: Got it.
JustineMumsnet: Except on West Wing holidays.
OliviaMumsnet: There's no such thing as a West Wing holiday!
JustineMumsnet: Well work hard around here. We'll make one.

grin

With apologies to Sorkin, and indeed Justine who didn't actually say any of the above. grin

Fiderer Thu 04-Oct-12 08:50:48

Olivia - that post is a classic grin It's great on so many levels grin

Did you suggest the webchat? Am betting you're all calling it "Total Crackpot Chat" grin

FrankelSaysRelax Thu 04-Oct-12 19:58:20
changeforthebetter Fri 05-Oct-12 21:40:23

Olivia grin

Frankel this could be the new "sign" for the cognescenti (spelling??) -better than naice ham!!

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 10-Oct-12 18:20:45

Where did you all go??????

Fiderer Thu 11-Oct-12 09:09:34

To debate prep? wink We should email Michelle Obama and suggest that just before Barack takes to the stage for the next debate, she cuts his tie in half grin

I was watching "Constituency of One" the other night. Not sure I found Amy's leaving believable. Surely she could do more for women's and family issues as FLOTUS's CoS? Esp as Abby was so popular. Aside from that, Abby was still away with Zoe and needed Amy to "hold the fort". Don't think she would abandon the position like that.

Did anyone else read that Sorkin wanted M-L Parker to be in TWW more? I know her husband left her for Clare Danes when she (M-LP) was pg.

OliviaLMumsnet (MNHQ) Thu 11-Oct-12 09:45:46

Fiderer

I know her husband left her for Clare Danes when she (M-LP) was pg.

No way. I did not know that.

Fiderer Thu 11-Oct-12 11:22:26

Boyfriend actually I think, not that it makes any difference.

I was wondering if her pg was the reason she left TWW then, with the whole Josh thing it was a story (her being pg) they didn't want to do.

Unlike Margaret, who bloomed and birthed and ran the CoS's office like clockwork without apparently any maternity leave. Better not tell Justine that, Olivia grin

FrankelSaysRelax Mon 15-Oct-12 13:46:50

They only get 6 weeks unpaid ML in the US don't they? I loved the way they briefly acknowledged Margaret's pregnancy and then never mentioned it again!

changeforthebetter Mon 15-Oct-12 21:02:42

<shock> at MLP and Claire danes . Margaret was a bit of a random muses for address. Remember when she apparently fa ncied miss world from Bhutan ? Then there's the Canadian backstory . Hello you could have a whole ministries in Margaret<grin> <stupid phone won't do emoticons!>

FrankelSaysRelax Wed 17-Oct-12 20:59:17

"Do you wanna tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing?!"

Gotta love Toby grin

Fiderer Thu 18-Oct-12 08:06:30

I love that line too, esp coming from Toby, he's so serious about it grin And the way they make Sam go outside:

JOSH: No, you got to go outside, turn around three times and curse.
TOBY: Spit.
JOSH: Spit and curse.
TOBY: Do everything. Go!

The opening scene with Josh and the voters is one of my favourites.

FrankelSaysRelax Thu 18-Oct-12 08:11:38

I love the flashback scene to CJ practising in the Press Room and reeling off the reporter names grin

Fiderer Thu 18-Oct-12 09:39:42

Terrible hair though grin

changeforthebetter Thu 18-Oct-12 20:48:17

Inside White House shots here, although everything is in the wrong place e.g. Leo's office. And WTF is the Oval Office Patio?? grin

Fiderer Thu 18-Oct-12 21:17:05

change I was going to post that too grin It's just wrong on so many levels shock

changeforthebetter Sat 20-Oct-12 08:11:03

Now they've had the Al Smith dinner! Wonder if they had tense convoy in the kitchen before? Mmm-Matt Santos in a tux . Love Alan Alda too. Brilliant casting.

Fiderer Sat 20-Oct-12 10:56:07

TWW is very educational, isn't it? Without it I'd have assumed the Al Smith Dinner was a fund-raising event hosted by a comedian grin

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 24-Oct-12 21:26:42

I just love the end of Inauguration Day pt 2 when Josh, Toby, Will and Danny go to get Donna from her apartment grin

Fiderer Wed 24-Oct-12 22:36:06

Esp that they brought Danny along.

You're still horsey, Frankel, I thought you were being put out to grass, or something lucrative I'd rather not think about.

Are you watching Homeland? I was wondering on the thread if you can get a mobile signal in the Sit Room as a character in Homeland did. In TWW you can't get a signal in the Roosevelt Room - unless you're a Chinese official.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 24-Oct-12 22:41:17

I can't bear to part with him just yet Fiderer, but yes he's been retired to stud to make lots of mini Frankel's!

I've not watched Homeland. Perhaps they've updated the cellular network around the White House - TWW gang were all pretty reliant on their pagers <slightly dated> grin

FrankelDeBeauvoir Sun 28-Oct-12 10:55:50

Hours of fun to be had here - no Martin Sheen though wink

Fiderer Sun 28-Oct-12 11:55:40

grin That was fun.

Was looking for you on the SCD thread last night. I wanted your opinion on Fern and Artem.

Hope we'll have an election night thread and we can bore the arse of everyone quoting TWW and posting pics of Bruno and Sam.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Sun 28-Oct-12 12:01:53

I was at the cinema watching Skyfall last night - it's fantastic! I'm going to catch up on SCD on iplayer shortly.

I think an election night thread is a fabulous idea, but I'm not sure I'll be able to keep myself awake long enough for the exit polls wink

Fiderer Sun 28-Oct-12 12:17:52

Haven't been to the cinema in ages envy but there is cinema not too far away which shows films in English.

Till I figure out how/with whom/when, I'll console myself with my new Bond Girl name.

changeforthebetter Sun 28-Oct-12 15:16:03

<marks place for election night thread> Tuesdays are my lightest day at work. I am dreading a Romney win. I wonder what impact Sandy will have on the last few days. My DB lives near DC and they have some atrocious storms/snowfall/powercuts.

Fiderer Sun 28-Oct-12 16:01:55

I'm definitely up for an election night thread. Must admit to having stayed up all night for every election the last 600 few years. Good thing I was on ML when the Supreme Court ruled for Bush.

We need to rally the US MNers so we can track weather patterns and exit polls.

change ask your brother if he'd be so kind and keep us updated.

Fiderer Sun 28-Oct-12 16:03:05

shock We do actually need a spreadshit shock

changeforthebetter Sun 28-Oct-12 22:14:10

Umm, am a bit nervous about the thought of a spreadshit grin

WTAF can't the US elections be in Half Term??? Will do my best to communicate with good-hearted but slightly unhinged DB on election night.

Hassled Sun 28-Oct-12 22:16:57

After half term I won't be working Tuesdays grin. Yay! I am so up for a WW-themed election night as long as Santos wins. I might have to be Bruno Gianelli for the night.

changeforthebetter Sun 28-Oct-12 22:17:09

Frankel great link!!

FrankelDeBeauvoir Mon 29-Oct-12 13:08:24

There's another great article on BBC website this morning, but I can't link to it on my phone.

It's in the Magazine section of the news page and is called "Extra Mile". It's about the time and travelling devoted to the last few weeks of campaigning and reminds me of Santos forgetting what state he is in and Vinick fracturing his hand grin

champagnesupernova Mon 29-Oct-12 13:10:41
FrankelDeBeauvoir Mon 29-Oct-12 16:59:21

Thanks champagne grin

Am I the only one who is worried about Sandy and it's potential affect on the election? If anything gets screwed up in the next few days Obama will be blamed. It could be San Andreo all over again confused

FrankelDeBeauvoir Thu 01-Nov-12 08:05:24

It's starting to sound like Sandy could be Mitt Romney's "San Andreo", a la Vinick. Apparently he's been campaigning on cuts to FEMA, the very people who are organising the clean up and recovery operations.

changeforthebetter Sat 03-Nov-12 09:14:21

God it's weird how it's all mirroring S7 in a way <or perhaps I am brainwashed by WW> Obama is being credited as "presidential" and Mittens as FEMA-bashing and climate change sceptic. I hope that Obama's team keep it together. I still think it will be incredibly tight (and I won't get much sleep that night!)

Fiderer Sat 03-Nov-12 14:06:25

Agree it will be v tight and nerve-wracking. Obama's visits reminded me of Bartlet visiting OK after the tornado.

Don't think Obama is getting any bounce out of the last few days, however highly people rate his performance. Romney & the FEMA cuts doesn't seem to have hurt him.

Am always surprised how many people voted for Bush, Ritchie (!) and now apparently Romney. We don't know how many electoral votes Ritchie won but he had a good chunk of the popular vote.

Thought Obama looked really tired behind the eyes on the news earlier. Which, as a seasoned veteran of Season 7, I of course know all about. "Playing time-zone hopscotch"

Oh for Lou Thornton and Bruno Gianelli to fire up the last days of the Obama campaign.

changeforthebetter Sun 04-Nov-12 16:46:54

I love Lou - mouthy, opinionated, bolshy and not remotely worried about putting Josh in his place grin

I think they put some sort of purple eye shadow under Santos' eyes t o show the extreme tirednesson the plane when he asks Josh if they are going to win <freak obsessive blush>

Umm, are people coming to this thread on Tuesday night for a US Election WW-style?

FrankelDeBeauvoir Sun 04-Nov-12 17:34:04

Perhaps we should start a thread over in Chat, we'll get more traffic that way and might even recruit some more WingNuts grin

Fiderer Mon 05-Nov-12 19:48:26

We'd have to put TWW in the title otherwise we'd annoy people who aren't fans or who want to be serious by filling in the time between exit polls or calls by reminiscing, comparing and lusting after WW characters grin
Not necessarily in that order wink

Am staying away from the election thread in Chat, tbh.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Mon 05-Nov-12 19:52:37

I've been drawn in blush it's all got very right-wing "Mary Marsh" over there all of a sudden.

Fiderer Mon 05-Nov-12 20:11:45

See, that's what I mean grin It's a serious election and yet I'd rather distract myself with the parallel universe of the West Wing.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Mon 05-Nov-12 21:44:05

You're right, we'll have to title it something like "The Alternative West-Wing-Inspired US Election Thread" <catchy>

changeforthebetter Mon 05-Nov-12 23:46:59

Yes I think a separate WW election thread is better - that way infidels people who don't love WW don't have to endure our frankly slightly obsessive discussions <grin>

FrankelDeBeauvoir Tue 06-Nov-12 07:53:12
Nevertalktomeduringthejackal Wed 07-Nov-12 18:38:22

Hello! Your plan has worked, you have recruited at least one more WingNut.

I haven't watched any since April this year as when I start to watch one episode that is effectively weeks down the drain, but this election has made it hard to resist!

Answering a question form the very first page which I have geekily realised no-one has answered: Operation Resting Eagle is when Bartlet put his alarm clock back an hour so he could wake up and then put it on snooze.

There are three words in the English langauage which begin with the letters 'dw' - can you name them please?!

Also to put one lusting thought in writing: Josh. In some sort of tuxedo, talking to big-shots (but wishing he was talking to Donna, obviously) at a White House function.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 07-Nov-12 18:46:10

We looked into the "DW" thing and there are actually more than 3!

Dwell
Dwarf
Dwindle

Plus
Dwale
Dwine
Dweeb

There are probably others too grin

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 07-Nov-12 19:58:07

In honour of the election, I am watching my favourite WW episode tonight - The Supremes

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 07-Nov-12 20:10:44

"I love her. I love her mind. I love her shoes!" grin

Nevertalktomeduringthejackal Wed 07-Nov-12 21:00:58

Genuinely devastated! I trust Bartlet so much I never even thought to doubt him.

When you said The Supremes I immediately thought not of the episode, but of "Mr McGarry, Mr Zeigler, Mr Lyman, Ms Cregg, it's The Temptations, I love you guys!"

RibenaFiend Wed 07-Nov-12 21:04:12

Hello!!!

"Bring me for finest muffins and bagels in the land"

I've introduced DP to TWW and this means I get to watch EVERYTHING all over again! He loves it and Zoe's just been kidnapped. My fave episodes!

...it's going to be and unbearable day wink

RibenaFiend Wed 07-Nov-12 21:04:55

*the <kicks apple autocorrect across the room!>

FrankelDeBeauvoir Sat 10-Nov-12 22:27:09

Finally! They've called Florida for Obama.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Fri 16-Nov-12 20:11:15

Bumpety bump

changeforthebetterforObama Fri 16-Nov-12 20:41:55

<smug about revised user name>
Anyone else imagining Obama walking down to Congress like Bartlet did to avoid the "fiscal cliff"?

FrankelDeBeauvoir Sat 17-Nov-12 21:29:15

Currently watching my second favourite episode - A Good Day, the one with the stem cell research vote.

Perfection <sigh>

McNally Sun 18-Nov-12 00:32:35

Very excited to have found this thread! Working my way through for the second time and just finished the second series (my favourite - especially Two Cathedrals). Love that it is even better the second time!

changeforthebetterforObama Tue 20-Nov-12 21:01:36

I love that one too Frankel!

Nevertalktomeduringthejackal Wed 21-Nov-12 00:54:24

Aah, I watched "Twenty-Five" today, where Zoe has just been kidnapped. Truly brilliant, especially Toby - "I don't want to alarm you or anything, but I'm Dad," and his spiel about babies coming with hats. Sigh. I definitely always need that pick-me-up after the devastating scene where Andy tells him he is too sad - I actually FAST-FORWARDED through that this time, I find it unbearable! Yes he's sad, but he's Toby.

I found Andy and Toby's relationship fascinating - so well acted.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 21-Nov-12 09:09:14

That's the thing about TWW, it's all so realistic - no one has a "perfect relationship" and everyone screws up from time to time.

Have you seen the Obama poster that's been seen in New York? The creator must be a TWW fan grin I'll see if I can find a link.

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 21-Nov-12 09:12:46

It's actually the front page of The New Yorker grin

Nevertalktomeduringthejackal Wed 21-Nov-12 09:56:02

Wow that is brilliant! I bawl when Josh says the final "what's next" talking to Santos after inauguration. No matter how many times I see the end of the series it always seems like the end of an era.

Wow, that sounds a bit tragic doesn't it!

Nevertalktomeduringthejackal Wed 21-Nov-12 10:00:03

I have read slightly back in the thread too, concerning whether Huck and Molly were conceived through IVF - I had always assumed that Andy and Toby "slipped back" for a few weeks, abruptly stopping when she became pregnant. I think because of "why don't you just do your job as a man and get that nice girl pregnant?"

FrankelDeBeauvoir Wed 21-Nov-12 10:38:08

I agree Nevertalk, that's what I have always assumed.

I live the flirting between CJ and Toby too - "Can this be one of those nights when we get sloshed and forget we're colleagues?" grin

Fiderer Thu 22-Nov-12 07:46:43

I assumed Toby and Andy had embryos frozen from when they were together. There was that flashback conversation about her immune system not recognising a pregnancy and her needing his blood cells, when they were in the middle of IVF after Bartlet was first elected.

Have just asked myself why this matters to me. I think it's because I'd hate to think of poor Toby getting his hopes up (no sniggering at the back) that Andy might come back to him <soppy emoticon>

Am posting here today because have just read a thread about Thanksgiving and someone mentioned Butterball turkey. Had to sit on my hands not to post this grin

FrankelDeBeauvoir Thu 22-Nov-12 21:39:59

"Holy mother of God, we caught him!"

Guess which episode I'm watching grin

Nevertalktomeduringthejackal Fri 23-Nov-12 00:38:02

* snigger * "hopes up" * snigger *.

I know it is heartbreaking to think of Toby thinking their relationship was about to begin again. Frankly though I just find the idea of her doing IVF alone BUT with her ex's sperm a bit strange? I think I can't see straight through my Toby-loving-goggles though.

That Butterball clip is one of my absolute favourites! "We should do that every week". And as for "we caught him," I remember very clearly telling to my Mum (who had watched the series many times before) just before I put that episode in that I was very worried (genuinely, as though they were actual friends) that Josh and Donna was never going to happen and I screamed when they kissed. Amazing moment.

I think one of the best Josh/Donna moments on the campaign trail is the episode where you see Vinick, Donna and Josh's days on the same day (ooh that makes no sense - very tired!) and Josh goes to knock on Donna's door but stops himself - oh my God, I could smell the longing through the television.

changeforthebetterforObama Fri 23-Nov-12 20:00:43

Wow Frankel that is definitely TWW-inspired!

Ahem, I think (with my PhD in Santosology grin that Josh says Holy Morher of God, we got him!

changeforthebetterforObama Fri 23-Nov-12 20:01:55

Or maybe Mother stupid iPad touch pad!

FrankellyMyDearIDontGiveADamn Sun 17-Feb-13 14:03:57
