Oooh Waterloo road is back next week...

I got into it last series --and am starting to get obsessed with crap soaps.

Anyone else in for a discussion thread?

TerrariaMum Thu 16-Aug-12 16:55:59

Love Waterloo Road and Holby and Casualty. So, yes, count me in.

Hooray! I just hope they haven't killed off poor Chalky!

HaitchJay Thu 16-Aug-12 17:56:58

I didn't see him in the trailer <wibble>

cocolepew Thu 16-Aug-12 22:58:48

I love WR, its utterly ridiculous grin

Msarsebiscuit Thu 16-Aug-12 23:51:47

Surely it's the most unhealthy workplace in Britain, I fear for the sanity of their risk assessors.

LineRunner Thu 16-Aug-12 23:58:07

It's a great school. There are only about 50 pupils, many of whom are in their early twenties, and all the Head Teachers are fruit loops.

Even the most dreadful, aggressive pupils are in an academic sixth form, frequently with their much older or younger siblings, and all the teachers have a very, very dark secret.

The LEA is feared as much as the KGB, as are 'The Governors'. The Director of Education sweeps in once in a while to sack the Head Teacher and there is a secretary called Janice who shags the plumber.

Fab.

Wolfiefan Fri 17-Aug-12 00:05:39

I love the fact that so many of the students have such dreadful and complex problems BUT they can all be straightened out in one episode. I also love that when everything is kicking off it only requires a "right you lot" to establish complete calm!
Hmm have scriptwriters ever been in a school or met a teen?!

jandymaccomesback Fri 17-Aug-12 10:45:04

And where is the SENCo? All those problems and he/she is never seen.

LittleBarnOwl Fri 17-Aug-12 10:47:17

I haven't watched it before but it's being filmed here now and somehow they have moved the "school" here too in the storyline confused

LineRunner Fri 17-Aug-12 10:56:40

Oh yes, that's right, the Head Teacher and group of pupils decided to open an academy in a barn or something. It's that easy. grin

LittleBarnOwl Fri 17-Aug-12 11:04:49

In real life they had and empty school here and the council saw a way to make some money out of it grin also now they have the cast to open fetes and new shops etc.

I'll have to start watching it.

Msarsebiscuit Fri 17-Aug-12 11:12:44

Yes, LittleBarnOwl, apparently my ex-MIL, Mrs Beelzebub was offered a role as an extra in it. Presumably they wanted to up the terror ante.

LittleBarnOwl Fri 17-Aug-12 11:23:17

Lol grin

Maybe she'll be an extra in the one they are filming in the prison too?

Msarsebiscuit Fri 17-Aug-12 11:48:26

Fingers crossed.

LineRunner Fri 17-Aug-12 14:17:34

There's going to be Waterloo Cell Block H? <excited>

I hope that the reason Chalky isn't in the trailer is that they want to keep us guessing about whether he's going to be there, rather than being because he has perished. They can't take Chalky away from us!

jandymaccomesback Sat 18-Aug-12 10:02:38

I didn't enjoy the last series much so I hope this isn't a move too far. Certainly a far-fetched storyline. Was Grantley in the trailer?

Msarsebiscuit Sat 18-Aug-12 10:57:37

I didn't see Grantley in the trailer, which is a shame because the single best moment of Waterloo Road was the time he danced in the classroom.

HaitchJay Sat 18-Aug-12 11:15:33

Doesn't he chase someone for graffittujng a car?

Oh no I already watch Doctors, am dipping in and out of CBB, I don't know whether I should indulge in more crap TV. <dithers>

Msarsebiscuit Sat 18-Aug-12 11:20:17

Haitchjay, that's entirely possible, I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to it , just didn't notice him and felt a bit sad because he's my favourite.

KatoPotato Sat 18-Aug-12 11:24:47

It's the crappest and best! Probably will never top Denise Welch putting out a petrol bomb fire with a water extinguisher then heading to the pub with the head... 'mazing!

HaitchJay Sat 18-Aug-12 13:48:52

<forces sparkling in front on the tv>

scrappydappydoo Sat 18-Aug-12 13:57:05

I love WR - its so bad. I like playing spot the 'ishooo' of the episode.
I get completely confused as to when in the school year they are - it always seems to be either 1st day back or end of summer term with exams and proms and stuff and it never seems to rain or snow.

MrsJREwing Sat 18-Aug-12 14:04:23

So now we know why Bobby was left with Lucy, Jane is busy in the school.

LineRunner Sat 18-Aug-12 14:05:22

If they are now Waterloo Academy, in a barn, will they be able to have a totally bonkers curriculum?

And even fewer pupils.

manicinsomniac Sat 18-Aug-12 15:39:51

Ooooh, yaya. Waterloo Road is the only programme I regret not having a tv that I can watch live tv on. I adore it, it reminds me that life could be worse (teacher here!)

I hated the end of the last series but I thought that was the grand finale, I didn't know it was coming back. I really hope no main characters died sad I'm sure they did though. I bet Grantley survived and the dinner lady he was just about to live happily ever after with died (sobs!)

I will be stalking iplayer until I see it come up

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 14:13:53

Tonight people, tonight!!!!

PTA Thu 23-Aug-12 14:22:50

They are not in barn, it may be Scotland but we're not that far behind!

In fact as Little Barn Owl said, they are in an old school which wasn't actually that old. As part of the Council programme of school building/refurbishment here there was a complete school that was offered to the production company.

It's bought the Council a bit of time as any re-development of this site is going to be difficult as it's in a conservation area.

I've never watched Waterloo Road before but will tonight as I want to see just how lovely the scenery is on the wee screen.

(Waves to Little Barn Owl!)

boohoohooshouldhavewongold Thu 23-Aug-12 14:35:48

So who did die at the end of the last episode, the trailers seem to be showing everyone, but Im obviously missing something?!

Oh PTA, your in for a treat if you`ve never watched it wink

AitchTwoOhOneTwo Thu 23-Aug-12 14:37:48

i've watched the first few eps, and i know who carked it. not daniela denby ashe, more's the pity...

boohoohooshouldhavewongold Thu 23-Aug-12 14:47:37

That is a pity Aitch grin oooo wait wait I think Ive worked it out ahaaa

cardibach Thu 23-Aug-12 18:32:10

I love the way they can write and rehearse a full musical in about 10 minutes! It takes me hours and hours over several months.

alemci Thu 23-Aug-12 18:49:11

can't wait, utter crap and escapism but so watchable

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 20:08:35

Can't just be one they've killed off?

Raahh Thu 23-Aug-12 20:09:35

Hmmm. So far this is looking like Waterloo road meets Tracey Beakergrin

I'm not liking it so far.......

meala Thu 23-Aug-12 20:16:58

Hey PTA you must live near me! I taught in the school they're using!

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 20:17:05

I'm disappointed in the death toll blush

New suspicious acting teacher
Pita sponsor
Dodgy young couple

What has blondie been in? Is it her off My Family?

boohoohooshouldhavewongold Thu 23-Aug-12 20:20:07

Well, I got it wrong with the death toll blush My family girl is getting on my nerves already

Um do you not have to apply to the council to get into a school anymore?

MrsJREwing Thu 23-Aug-12 20:21:39

Yes my family and Eastenders around the same time as Martine McC...

Daniela Denby-Ashe, we called her 'greasy top knot' in Eastenders. grin

Really not liking this. sad

MrsJREwing Thu 23-Aug-12 20:32:15

Did she date Joe, Biancas brother, Davids son?

Yes, and Robbie Jackson I think.

Who are all these people? I really don't care about any of them. Is the new boy about 35?

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 20:41:02

sparkling it's not a LA school so doesn't have to. can't believe I'm defending a bit of Waterloo rd

Thanks Harriet, I must have missed that bit. grin

I don't think I will be watching this every week.

foxinsocks Thu 23-Aug-12 20:47:16

Omg first time I've seen it

Poor lad

God this is shite.
Shite shite shite

What Itchy said. x100

foxinsocks Thu 23-Aug-12 20:54:06

It's v low grade lol

foxinsocks Thu 23-Aug-12 20:54:22

Makes eastenders look intelligent

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 20:55:13

I keep thinking its finished then it carries on!

nikcname Thu 23-Aug-12 20:57:12

Really used to love this show when Tom and Izzie where teaching etc. Every year it gets a little more cringeworthy. Am now aaaggghhhhhh!!!! Terrible acting from the red head and skanky scout. Then how bad are the sponser and new eacher. Will give it to the end of the episode but is soooo bad!!

SugarBatty Thu 23-Aug-12 20:58:10

Boo! Very disappointed, only watching because I fancy tom.

Well I'm not going to be tuning in again.

LineRunner Thu 23-Aug-12 20:59:25

The pupils used to only have to be 20 but now they seem to have to be their 30s.

SugarBatty Thu 23-Aug-12 21:00:41

Grange hill for grown ups this is not!

SugarBatty Thu 23-Aug-12 21:05:57

And just how many times is this headteacher gonna encounter crazy pupils with knives!?

nikcname Thu 23-Aug-12 21:06:26

Just realised I'm watching on Tivo so behind everyone else! Least you have all made it to the end I'm still suffering on 28 mins hmm

LineRunner Thu 23-Aug-12 21:08:50

It was shite, wasn't it?

It really was Line. V disappointing.

Viviennemary Thu 23-Aug-12 21:11:58

I thought Waterloo road was on tonight for some reason. Just found out it isn't. Grrr. Been looking forward to it all day. I lead a sad life.

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 21:14:38

vivienne confused we've just watched it

Perhaps we didn't watch Waterloo Road Harriet, it didn't feel much like it did it? shock

Hotel Inspector is on C5 now. the hotelier's name is Muff. <snigger>

lauraloo09 Thu 23-Aug-12 21:19:14

Never watched it before but tuned in cos it's set in my local town and it was disappointing but weird to see the local areas etc on tv...next week my bros house is in it (was in trailer showing the African family) so will tune in to see that lol

SugarBatty Thu 23-Aug-12 21:23:21

Vivienne? confused

Viviennemary Thu 23-Aug-12 21:49:03

I missed it. It was on after all. At 8 o'clock. I thought it was on at 9. Life is too complicted. grin

Viviennemary Thu 23-Aug-12 21:50:48

Complicated. Can't spell either now. Might as well give up and go to bed!

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 23-Aug-12 21:51:54

grin it's ok Waterloo road didn't make any sense either.

PTA Thu 23-Aug-12 22:14:35

Hi Mela and Lauraloo,

Here's me thinking at all these year I'm the only person in Greenock who uses Mumsnet!

Yes, Mela I live round the corner from "Waterloo Road" but went to the "other" school.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, it's on the planner. I'm not that bothered about the storyline or acting, I just want to go "Oh there such and such"! I was the same with "Sweet Sixteen" and "Dear Frankie".

BertieBotts Thu 23-Aug-12 22:15:52

I watched on iPlayer so have just finished - I enjoyed it grin I love Waterloo Road.

It is slightly odd and not quite as good, but hopefully will get into it. They always used to cover abuse storylines really well so I hope it doesn't go down the tropey route - could see a hint of it with the "abuse = anger problem" kind of storyline, but we'll see how it goes.

I like the new pub grin The school looks pretty much exactly the same, though. And was also surprised that they didn't kill off more people, and that all of the "problem" kids from last series magically decided to move up there to live with Mr Budgen and the dinner lady hmm

mum47 Thu 23-Aug-12 22:21:31

God I used to love WL but thought it was shite! What a disappointment, and very short on Scottish accents - do they really expect us to believe that all these children would just be sent up to Scotland - and where are they all staying? Or am I taking it all a bit too seriously?![hmmm]

lauraloo09 Thu 23-Aug-12 22:23:01

PTA I used to think I was the only one from Greenock too lol smile
It was strange seeing everything like the tontine and the spinnaker didn't go to the school went to the other one too lol x

TaggieCampbellBlack Thu 23-Aug-12 22:53:43

Words fail me.

meala Thu 23-Aug-12 23:45:51

Hi PTA, Littlebarnowl and lauraloo!
I live nearby too. I thought it was strange seeing the town, the hospital was obviously filmed in the school too with the views behind smile. I didn't really enjoy the programme but didn't watch it before so I'm not sure if that's how it always was. The Esplanade looked nice though.

jandymaccomesback Fri 24-Aug-12 09:40:23

mum47 I agree about the Scottish accents. If the neighbouring Head is worried about losing his students you'd think they would be in evidence.

PTA Fri 24-Aug-12 13:51:53

Oh a wee Greenock mumsnet quiche!!!

I'm going to try and watch it later for the views that I can see out of the window!?!?!

TheOriginalSteamingNit Fri 24-Aug-12 13:58:17

I only started watching this at the end of last series - we watch it agape, sneering, it is ludicrous isn't it? So anyway, wasn't up to speed on all the characters yet, so working out who had died in the crash was a bit like Mortality Kim's Game....

So. That bad lad has gone from crash victim with such serious injuries as to render him permanently paralysed, to competent wheelchair user in mainstream education in six weeks, presumably?

Is the Business Woman going to live at the school too, or what? Whoop yeah, give it up for the headteacher guys, all 17 of you .....

And how did they bring the stained glass windows?

They have less idea about schools that Michael Gove!
Can't wait for next week.....

I don't live in Greenock, but I go to the big tesco in Port Glasgow, and recognised some of the locations they were using - if I can't be in the Greenock quiche, could I be a near neighbour of the Greenock quiche?

PTA Fri 24-Aug-12 14:38:10

Oh of course, all welcome!

Yay! thanks

cardibach Fri 24-Aug-12 20:01:32

realism was never the strong point of Waterloo Road anyway! I love it for the escapism and the opportunity for cathartic shouting at the screen! I enjoyed it.

meala Fri 24-Aug-12 20:59:28

The Greenock "quiche" is growing grin.

Maybe we should meet?

meala Sat 25-Aug-12 10:39:31

smile Wonder if any of us know each other?

PTA Sat 25-Aug-12 10:51:17

Probably, it is Greenock after all!

I would be very surprised if we didn't know one another or have some some sort of connection of children/friends/family.

lauraloo09 Sat 25-Aug-12 16:27:17

Wouldn't be surprised if we know each other or have a connection as PTA says its Greenock after all lol x

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister Thu 30-Aug-12 20:05:48

Anyone watching tonight?

LineRunner Thu 30-Aug-12 20:13:35

Yes!

LineRunner Thu 30-Aug-12 20:51:44

DD just turned it off ....

It looks like part of next week's episode was filmed at Castle Semple, Lochwinnoch - we've walked our dogs there.

<< gets a little overexcited >>

meala Thu 30-Aug-12 23:31:25

They were filming a football match at the Battery Park in Greenock yesterday. They definitely were going to be filming a canoeing scene, could be Castle Semple!

I'm pretty sure it was - but I deleted the episode, so I can't get dh to watch the trailer and tell me how right I am!grin

goshandspecs Thu 06-Sep-12 18:20:56

It's not as good as it used to be. Most of the decent characters have gone. They need to axe daniela denby-ashe, she is a crap actress.

scrappydappydoo Thu 06-Sep-12 21:47:40

Great episode tonight! Waterloo Rd meets Baywatch!!

goshandspecs Thu 06-Sep-12 23:20:37

Scrappy, I agree. It was a good episode tonight!

DowntonOut Fri 07-Sep-12 18:35:55

Just spotted that this thread had spawned a Greenock quiche. Never lived there, but I'm from a Greenock family. Pretty sure every one of you will know of one of us. Been catching bits of WR to see familiar sights smile

Listmaker Mon 10-Sep-12 14:27:05

Can I join in even on WR chat (even though I live nowhere near Greenock!)?

I have to laugh at the massive amounts of ridiculousness in this show somewhere - my dds get cross when I keep saying 'like that would ever happen' all the time so I have to keep schtumm!

I do have to laugh at how Tariq can be paralysed and then as you say rehabilitated enough in the 6 weeks holiday to be back at school with just Grantley as his carer! I mean how is he getting dressed etc?! Hilarious........

And yes Daniella thingy from My Family is DIRE!

Glad Chalky survived though - love him! Any chance Janice will finally see the light and fall for him though...........no thought not!

OodHousekeeping Fri 14-Sep-12 11:34:16

Ooh I so want to slap DDA!

SpanishFly Fri 21-Sep-12 15:47:14

I watched the first episode of this series thinking "oooh, Jane Beale isn't great at a Scottish accent." Only to hear her interviewed on the radio the next day to find out that's her real accent grin

OodHousekeeping Fri 21-Sep-12 18:09:53

grin

I'm still watching but still haven't really got into it this year

BertieBotts Sun 23-Sep-12 12:28:27

It's so awful grin The stupid unrealistic rivalry with the next school... and Sian needs to go on the mumsnet Relationship section grin If she manages to get the head's dad to make up with him I will throw something at the TV. What have they done with the half decent writers??

Why do all the characters have either totally insane parents, or really mega-supportive, amazing, perfect ones? Nobody has a mum who is loving but loses it and shouts sometimes, or a dad who does anything normal (by, you know, TV standards) like having a secret affair or getting made redundant. In fact, nobody apart from Josh appears to have a dad at all.

Grantly and his new wife seem totally useless as housemaster/mistress, they dish up food and do the occasional telling off, but Grantly is embarrassed to help Tariq with things like getting out of the bath and his wife witnessed a pupil's mother in a sexual situation with another pupil, and then her slapping her own daughter and just sat them down for a heart to heart with a smile! Surely she'd have to report it??

And then the bit at the end of this week made me shock - so the headteacher of the other school attacks a pupil and scares her half to death and they go in there all softly softly (In the old WR Michael or Tom would have run in and grabbed him off her!) and he breaks down in tears and apologises and everything is magically alright, she's not upset at all, just happy she has a place at the other school confused

Scrumptiouslyyummy Fri 12-Oct-12 14:27:37

Could Jaye Jacobs, who plays Sian, be pregnant? I thought I spied a baby bump last night.

marquesas Fri 12-Oct-12 14:31:46

ooh scrumptious - I thought exactly the same thing grin

If she's not the top she was wearing wasn't very flattering was it?

Scrumptiouslyyummy Fri 12-Oct-12 14:36:24

It wasn't a great top. I'm certain she is pregnant. smile

bruffin Fri 12-Oct-12 15:05:44

My DD 15 said the same
