Documentary
Savile Row

Monday 04 February
9:00pm - 10:00pm
BBC4
1/3 - Love Thy Neighbour
Not much has ruffled the starched collars and pinstriped suits of London's Savile Row over the past 100 years. But off-the-peg upstart Abercrombie & Fitch (or the "unacceptable face, abs and pecs of modern retail", as narrator Paul McGann puts it) has recently set up shop alongside the elite tailors in Mayfair, causing a few of them to fall on their pinking shears in horror. "These kids pay £30 for a T-shirt with the shop's name on it!" sneers one, although it's not clear whether it's the price, the style of garment or the blatant advertising that appals him most. This delicious three-parter is a window on a bespoke world that most of us would never normally see. Suit you, sir.

Sounds deliciously upper crust and oldy worldy. Will try to catch after the Panorama housing bubble thing.

FAQ · 04/02/2008 22:28

thanks for posting this Kanga - watched it (wouldn't usually have paid any attention to it in the listings). I actually found it quite interesting (and I definitely don't buy designer clothes........if it's not from Matalan, Tesco, Asda, Market or a Charity shop then I've "splashed out").

Quite sad about the Harris tweed thing - another fine example of corporate business ruining the livelihood of local businesses

Really enjoyed this. I hope that heritage will triumph over the money making sharks who do not value anything other than the bottom line. Saville row is part of London's mistique, culture and history - it would be very sad to lose it, even though we can't afford to buy their products, including their hankies.

The demise of Harris tweed sums up what happens when big business takes over. Very sad.

watched this by chance, I thought it was a good viewing
I was more interested in parts of about the skill of fabric and suit makers rather than the customers.
More about Harris Tweed cloth handwoven by the islanders of Lewis.

I watched it too

I enjoyed it too

I agree it is sad about the Harris Tweed, hopefully the Savile Row tailors may be able to persuade them to remain as they are

Loved it. Will be sending DH down for his next ensemble
FAR better than 'designer', although DHs last suit was a Paul Smith which was excellent cloth, off the peg but altered to fit beautifully, and VERY reasonable money. I think they are quite good tailors at PS...

Having "heard" about the prices of suits hand tailored on Savile row I used to be of the opinion it was overpriced. However watching that last night, and the time, attention to detail and sheer effort (to get the best materials etc) to make those suits I can see how they can cost so much.

not that I would buy one (or DH), but when you consider the cost of some designer handbags women buy which require no fitting, it makes it appear good value and sense for men to have a such a suit.
