Gavin & Stacey

Just binge watched Gavin & Stacey on Netflix.

It was a great series, wasn't it? Nessa and Smithy were the best characters, obviously. Not surprising given that Cordon and Jones wrote the series.

Some things I liked about the show:

The friendship between Gavin and Smithy - all the in-jokes / silly made-up words / dancing / random dance moves.

How most of the characters are actually very nice and generally care about one another. The Christmas episode (despite the drunk argument and punch) rang very true for me. They clearly love Christmas.

Nessa's wedding dress.

How Nessa and Smithy's baby is always called "Neil the baby". Even in the credits.

Anyone else love this show?

Yes, me and DP quote it all the time. If it's on we will watch it..or catch up if there's nothing else on! Nessa's wedding is our favourite episode Grin

Yes! I do!

I love all the conversations about food. The dynamics of sharing a takeaway and the art of a roasted turkey!

Also find Pam hilarious in every scene and her nicknames for her friends. Fat No More Pat!

I adore this show. All of the characters would be my new best mate apart from Stacey, who is a whiney self-centred princess. However I do love her out-staring the frenemy in the chemists. It's my comfort viewing, though. If I'm out of sorts and grumpy, G&S will cheer me up every time.

I just watched it all again too. Love it.

Pam's fab Grin

I really like Gav and Mick's relationship too - it's very loving.

I adore the Christmas special. "Will you join me in a mint Baileys for Christmas?"

I like the peripheral characters.

The best bit ever is Pete and Dawn's wedding-vows-renewal-ceremony, when Dawn recites 'Ben' by Michael Jackson Grin

'Pete, you're always running here and there...'

I was a bit sad that Nessa didn't marry Dave Coaches. It was probably for the best but he was obviously a good bloke. Caring towards his girlfriend's son and has his own bus! Who wouldn't want a man with his own bus? And, seriously, who could manage a relationship with Ness? Even John Prescott couldn't handle it.

I just adore Nessa's past life. And her 'relationships' with John Nettles, John Prescott etc.

Stacey was annoying a lot of the time, though. And Gavin was pretty boring. Poor Matthew Horne and Joanna Page. Supposedly, the central characters in the series. Yet, far less interesting than all the peripheral characters.

I watched the "Making Of..." of the Christmas episode. The actors were all clearly having a marvellous time. (With the possible exception of Rob Brydon. I'm never sure if he just has a very dry, sarcastic sense of humour or is actually a bit of a dick.)

There was a great bit where the actor who plays Pete said that his on-screen wife (Julia Davis) was one of the most beautiful women he's ever met. It kind of mirrored Pete and Dawn's relationship. Dawn was way hotter than Pete. But they were equally awful, though.

Then the two actors flirted massively with one another and then jokingly implied that they were having a steamy off-screen relationship.

Startled, agreed.Ruth and James gave themselves the best characters! I love Pam , but Gwen was my favouite as she was just so nice. How she didnt hit Nessa sometimes i dont know! Nessa's musings about bbq's and the takeaways was real comedy gold. One scary woman!
Mind you, how fast they whizzed up and down the M4 amazed me. Having lived in south wales for a few years ( but from essex) i can assure you it could take forever and that was 10years ago! I felt sorry for Dave coaches, but it would never have worked! He would have been on the aibu board every day..

The lady who really lives in Gwen's house was quite sad, though. She got a note through her door from the Location Manager. "Because I can't read, I phoned the number on the note." Then she said that she was happy that her house was in the programme because people wanted to come round and sit on the sofa and she hadn't previously had much opportunity to interact with people.

Loved this! And the song that was playing as Nessa walked down the aisle was the Neighbours Scott/Charlene wedding one, wasn't it?

If we're shouting out the minor characters then don't forget Sheridan Smith as Rudy. She was so brilliant.
