Amazon Firestick...do you have one?Do I need one?!

Hi,we have Virgin Media (TiVo box),we also have an Amazon Prime subscription and Netflix. We watch quite a bit on Netflix,we don't really bother with Amazon Instant video stuff as we do it via the Wii and it's really clumsy to use plus the picture isn't great.
So...should I invest in a Firestick?
And if so,can I put restrictions on it so the kids can't start watching Orange is the New Black or something?!
Any advice please...thanks.

Yes love mine, it's so easy to move about the house or even to a hotel. You can set a password yes for either PG, 12 etc .

How does it work? What can you watch?

Champagne do you have Amazon prime? If so you can watch all sorts of box sets and films with the Firestick. You stick it in the USB of your tv and off you go I believe.

It's great, but only since we got fibre optic broadband. Couldn't watch it before.

I would happily get rid of sky tv, unfortunately dh disagrees.

Can you watch catch up TV on it? I want to move my front room around and I cba to have a wire put from the Ariel to the TV (door in the way) so thought about cancelling virgin and getting a fire stick instead?

Love it! Watching ripper street on it as I type!
Lots of great kids stuff on prime streaming too.
Makes it so easy to watch.
Will be using it for Netflix once I start maternity leave.

Catch up TV? Yes, you can download all sorts of Apps on it including the I player, ITV Hub, All 4 etc. Works better than sky catch up as you have box sets on the apps for free on some of them, eg All 4.
The Apps include things like You Tube, Netflix etc. Also exercise videos and cool screen savers like log fires or snowy windows.

Great piece of kit IMO

Well we are totally loving the Firestick so far. It's so easy to use and much more responsive than the TiVo system.
I discovered the Health and Fitness app today, can't wait to do some yoga.

I have one in my bedroom.

Have no ariel (do you even need one?!) or anything in bedroom so was either fire stick or getting virgin media out to get a 2nd box in bedroom and faffing with wires etc. This was much easier and quicker and can alway sfind somethin to watch in bed. Either catch up/old box sets or my own stuff that I have bought on amazon anyway.

Can I ask you folks who are all clearly more au fait with all this modern technology (I'm fairly old and childless, so no-one on hand to teach me this stuff), if you have a smart TV with the ability to connect to internet, do I need another router/modem(?) box thingy near to it or will it just work off my current wireless internet connection?
My current TV's don't have any holes/ports to insert sticks.

Love my firestick! Wingedharpy if you have a smart tv I don't think you need the stick - you can just download the apps. If you get Amazon Prime you can get the extra content.

I am very un-techy and find the firestick so easy to use, and we're loving Sons of Anarchy box set! Lots of good kids' films for DC to watch as well.

We have kodi on ours too. We love our firestick! It occasionally goes missing into one of the kids' rooms but I think Santa may be on the case to sort that problem Wink

I have a roku stick and I love it. We don't have tv (as in I have a TV with no means of getting a digital signal) and so have no TV licence. We used to just watch dvds but now we have Netflix, amazon prime, and catch up from its, channel 4 (deliberately did not download BBC iplayer) and there's apps for watching Ted talks amd all sorts of stuff.
