Versailles - it was shit wasn't it?

Genuine question actually. I only lasted about 15 minutes until the endless sex, ugly men and confusing "plot" got too much. This programme has been made by a French channel in English for goodness knows what kind of audience, and the BBC was dumb enough to buy it. Confused

Just watched - I love me a good period drama romp Grin

I'm on the fence. On the one hand I loved The Tudors and this seems like it's along the same lines but on the other none of the characters seemed likeable and as all the men looked the same I didn't know who was who half the time.

I'll watch the next episode and see.

I just want to know wtf Athelstan is doing in France.

They lost me at the scene where the bloke was bashing in the other bloke's head with a hammer, watched by bloke 3 with his remaining eye..

I think that was the point I gave up trying to follow footle. I hoped it would fall into place later.

I admire your staying power. I think I might have managed 5 minutes.

Glad I wasn't around in those days; I would have never fancied anyone based on the five men I saw

Yes, they were all ugly!

I think it was due to the hair.

I love men with long hair (DH has very long hair) but even I watched it with this look on my face Confused

It was shitty shite. Some of the Twitter reviews were genius, though. Can't believe BBC picked up and paid for such utter rot.

Is it on again tonight? Or the second risked on iplayer?

I'm going to watch it again as I didn't hate it or anything. I feel like it might be a grower.

I managed 10 minutes, it was utter shite!

A review I read was hilarious "it was as if Ken Loach had been given a 10 million budget but he'd hired the cast of Home And Away"Grin

I also love men with long hair. Prefer it not to have been GhD'd though.

It was hilariously bad. The baby they held up must have been bought at Toys'R'Us, it looked so plastic.

shotwithmyownbagsofshit · 05/06/2016 21:44

When they lifted up the baby DH looked up and said 'looks like a plasticine model...'

I watched it with DS (squirm) - we enjoyed it!

I enjoyed this. If you look on it as a sort of campy 17th century version of Dallas and don't expect any sort of historical accuracy it's good fun. Non of the characters are particularly likable (actually no there are two - the doctor and his daughter) but I don't think they're meant to be.

I know the sex scenes have been touted as shocking but they really aren't.

Ok so I ended up watching episode 1 the whole way through because the husband said he wouldn't mind seeing what it was like. It seems watching the whole thing rather than 5 mins made a difference.

Anyway I've now jumped back onto the fence. I sort of liked it but there's sorting missing - I loved the Tudors and this is missing whatever that had; possibly Henry Cavill.

Still disappointed with the level of attractive men - men in pretty clothing and styled hair doesn't seem to be my cup of tea.

Oh another thing - when the Big Meanie (the one who doesn't seem to mind killing and maiming) when down to the place where the bloody rags where handing up and there was a tired woman there - what was that place? She mentioned that some of the girls had their aunts visiting and one thought he was pregnant so I thought it might be a brothel. However I couldn't figure out 1) why the rags were sill bloody (presuming aunt meant period) rather than washed 2) why he went there and might need that information.

Hmn. I bought the first season of DVD (the perks of expat life) and binge-watched while DH was away on business a few months ago. The first episode is completely bizarre and I wouldn't have kept watching if it wasn't for the fact I'd spent 30 euros on the box set.

It does get much better. Finds its feet in the 2nd / 3rd episode and although it continues to have a slightly peculiar vibe about it I was gripped and watched all 10 episodes over a couple of evenings. My mum and sister watched it when they came to visit and had the same feelings about the earlier episodes.

The first episode is a little bit like I would imagine having an LSD trip would be like, not that I would know. I found a link online and watched the whole series - agree that it gets better.

MakingJudy - I didn't get that scene either, but it makes sense in later episodes. It's to keep tabs on people at court - every single thing about people would be recorded - including who was having their period. Kind of a 17thc version of big brother, if that makes sense.
