She looks amazing! I'm not convinced by the programme though. All this cutesy fish out of water quirky midlander in Intellectual London thing isn't quite working for me.

Yes I'm finding it a bit annoying so far.

The book is HILARIOUS but this is quite disappointing Sad

Why is Alan Bennett now called Malcolm Tanner?

Kind of feels like it should have a Sunday teatime slot rather than a Friday night...

It feels a bit CBBC drama.

I HATED the book, everdene. Just as well we've all got different tastes Smile

Prefer the book so far. Think it would be much better with the "characters" from the book rather than made up people.

Don't mind Alan Bennett being a grumpy old sod because he's Alan Bennett. Malcolm Tanner is just an annoying grumpy old sod.

I quite like it actually and halfway through book. Funny

Baffled me more as it got nearer the end. Confused

Not read the book so that probably explains why.

I'll join this thread as I'm Billy No Mates on the other one Blush
I enjoyed it but I'm baffled by the AB character who isn't AB. He must have refused to be portrayed but he was in the book and involved in the RL events so don't understand that one. Not bad for a first episode

AB complained about the book saying he'd never fixed a washing machine. So maybe they've had to fictionalise it further to not piss people off.

It was OK, nice early 80's nostalgia and Faye Marsay was terrific as Nina.

I agree that it doesn't feel right they've fictionalised Alan Bennett. The George character played by HBC has also been fictionalised - if I hadn't read the book or didn't know the backstory I think I'd have enjoyed the programme a bit more.

Davros · 21/05/2016 15:07

They seem to be the same characters but with different names.

Just watched it but thought it a bit lame.
Would someone mind explaining the backstory please?

Ok, I enjoyed this, but am I the only one who is confused about the no shoes thing?

I thought it was so boring.
I thought it was a one off drama.
I don't think I'll bother next week.
Helena Bonham Carter looks lovely dressed normally and not as she usually dresses - charity shop explosion style.

I'm not sure I can stand much more of Nina saying "nucular". It really sets my teeth on edge.

I agree that it seemed like a kids programme (except for some of the language)
Haven't read the book so I didn't have any expectations.

I Havent read the book but I found this awful and went and did something else when they were talking about the crabs at the dinner table! Is it a true story? My dh really fancies HBC so he didn't find it too bad. Attention to detail with the 80s style Sainsbury's carrier bag I noticed. Wont be watching any more i'm afraid.

It seems clear that having read the book makes a massive difference. I would probably agree with all the negative comments if I hadn't read it but I will persist because I have a lot of affection for it. Also it might improve after the first episode and its adapted by Nuck Hornby so there's hope.

I go onto another TV thread sometimes and someone on there said that the family featured in this were ' fairly normal'! I was a bit sceptical as I have never met a family like this before ( wrong circles, wrong postcode obviously) or anyone who would possibly behave like this.. has anyone else or am I ' not normal' for thinking they were a bit odd? ( I know there has been some poetic licence maybe here too..) or do I need to just watch it all again with a 'new head' on so to speak??
Davros, why no mates??
