MONDAY 13 NOVEMBER

Documentary

100% English

8:00pm - 9:00pm

Channel 4

VIDEO Plus+: 4495
Subtitles

Is it possible to be "100 per cent English"? Does it involve genes, incomprehensible graphs or merely an innate appreciation of inappropriate summer clothing and glazed pork pies? Bamboozled by the issue, Andrew Graham-Dixon strides off on a search for "the true origins of the English". Collaring eight subjects who believe themselves to be wholly English - including Carol Thatcher, Garry Bushell and a woman who works in the fishing industry - the raffish journalist then subjects them to extensive DNA analysis in the hope that their faces will crumble like meringues when it's revealed that their ancestors actually came from Turkey. But although the test results are indeed surprising, the reactions of some of the less tolerant subjects may have you punching the sofa in frustration.

RT reviewer - Sarah Dempster

This was hilarious! And a few people were very open about what they learned and how it changed theri views.
Exept the one who is suing C4!!!!

And could I just ask people to ponder the contribution made by Englishmen such as Ian Wright, with his well-behaved football and 'Unfit Kids', compared to 'I am a 100% English person and Ian Wright isn't' naked balloon dancer who prances around using ballons as fake genitals as a job?

somewhere there is a study that as many as 1 in 4 kids is not the progeny of who he thinks is the daddy.

that and people are really clueless when it comes to a little common sense applied to historical general knowledge.

i wonder if that woman is seeking therapy to cope with her new-found knowledge.

To be really English you have to be a mongrel. Vikings, Romans, French, Irish, you name it, they've all come to these shores in search of shagging. And we've been marvellous hostesses

Was dying to have it done, and then read the price.
Still would be sooo interested in seeing my genetic profile

Best bit had to be Carol Thatcher (whom I generally like; unlike her mother) when she was told that she was 26% middle eastern and should loook to Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon and Libya for her ancestry. Would love for Who Do You Think You Are to pick that one up and declare the Thatchers to be the long lost cousins of the Gadaffis or someone.

Hmmm...

AncestryByDNA can be used to resolve the following four groups:

  • European: Europeans, Middle Easterners and South Asians from the Indian subcontinent including India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

  • East Asian: Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Koreans, Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders including peoples native to the Philippines.

  • African: Peoples from Sub-Saharan Africa such as Nigeria and Congo region.

Not sure I would shell out that kind of money to a company who can't even count up to four correctly...

Howled with laughter at this programme. So incredibly funny. Best one was the lawyer trying to petition for the English to be recognised as an ethnic group. She was hilarious. Laying flowers at Battle Castle in rememberance of Anglo Saxons. Do funny that she tried to sue the programme afterwards.
