Tonight: Midwife Crisis
2.22, Mon Oct 23 2006

Tonight investigates fears that slipping standards at Britain's over-stretched maternity units are now endangering the lives of mothers and their babies during deliveries.

Fiona Foster also highlights how crippling staff shortages and shrinking budgets are now endangering the lives of mothers and their babies during deliveries or forcing hospitals to turn pregnant women away.

Tonight With Trevor McDonald: Midwife Crisis is on ITV1 at 8pm on Monday October 23.

My first labour, I heard the labour ward was shut because they had insufficient midwives - people were getting sent to the next town. However, I'd been referred up for immediate induction from antenatal clinic... which probably meant I got rolls-royce service since there were only about two other women there!

Really felt for the people that were turned away though - what a nightmare.

I am shocked at what is happening to some of these people, and feel so lucky that my son who was born in June is ok and well.
I thought my treatment was bad, but compared to these stories i was lucky.

Its so sad. How can they get away with service like this.

good plan - thats what i said before Joshua was born.
They're not all bad, the midwives that looked after me were very good, but definitly understaffed. 4 women per midwife. crazy. my induction failed because of them and i ended up with a c-section
