Is it on at Christmas? Fantastic, I love M & L.. Geraldine M got the voice down though. And the costumes were perfect.

The original cast were so perfect that I just can't bear to watch the new series. Luckily, I have a brand new dvd of the original series waiting for me this this Christmas.

Having said that, I did enjoy reading Tom Holt's 2 books about the characters, as he had captured EF Benson's tone so well.

Ooh, so excited! I love the books and happened to be in Rye (Tilling) when they were filming outside Lamb House (Mallards).

When is it on?

The new cast list is full of amazing people. Not sure how it will compare to the original though.
Well spotted OP

I went to a preview of the first episode last week. I also loved the 80's series and this version is also hugely entertaining. If the first episode is anything to go by, we're all in for a treat.

I adore Mapp & Lucia. Have never seen the earlier adaptation so am looking forward to this. Anna Chancellor and Miranda Richardson sounds like brilliant casting.

It's something I've always meant to read so I hope the TV is good to inspire me to read it.

Really love M&L and have the last TV series on DVD. Looking forward to this but apparently a few liberties have been taken, e.g. The guru appearing in tilling when his story was set in Riseholme. I have also just bought the three "extra" M&L books written by Guy Fraser-Sampson on kindle but no idea if they're any good.

On tonight BBC1 9.05pm, looking forward to it as I have not read the books and missed the 1980's series.

Watching, but struggling to understand Miranda Richardson. Why the extra teeth? Looks like she was struggling with them.

The whole programme is downright weird!!!!!

Might have to start channel hopping.

Voicewise Miranda Richardson sounds a bit like Prunella Scales in this.

She sounds a lot like PS. I think I like it (it isn't quite un perfecto as the original)I really want to go to Rye now.

I used to be a member of the Tilling Society, which concentrated on the Mapp and Lucia books, unlike the EF Benson Society, which is about the author and all his works.

Sadly, it closed down but 10 years ago, the Friends of Tilling was formed. It continues with the traditional annual gathering in Rye and has Alexander McCall Smith as its Vice President.

It really is worth a look. for all those who enjoy the books and the television productions.

I haven't seen tonight's because, for me, nothing will be able to better the original.

it wasn't as good as the original in fact, it seemed they were almost doing an impersonation.

but it wasn't awful either.just not perfect.

I am a huge fan of the original series and was so excited when I saw there was to be a remake, with such a great cast. After about 10 minutes I realised I was just very disappointed. The dialogue kept getting very close to the original script but I don't feel it was as sharp and 'cutting' as the original.

Like Duchess I struggled to understand Miranda Richardson and, yes, I felt she was just impersonating Prunella Scales too.

Quaint Irene wasn't bad but the cast of the original series are just so perfect in my head - they are the characters.

I with they'd considered adapting another of EF Benson's works, Paying Guests for example, or Mrs Ames - both brilliantly funny and along the same 'social satire' lines as Mapp and Lucia.

I will watch the other 2, they may get better, but only safe in the knowledge that I can retreat to the DVDs of the original later!

I loved the original series and, rather to my surprise, really enjoyed last nights programmer.

I loved the original series with Prunella Scales, Geraldine McEwan and Nigel Hawthorne.

I thought this new one was pretty good too - actually MR/Mapp with all the teeth had me roaring Grin

Will certainly watch tonight and tomorrow as well.
