I watched the last series, it was very bleak

No idea what's going on now, why they're running, who these new folk are

I thank you.

It's on right now.

But don't bother. Truly shite.

I've got a weird thing going on for John Simm in this, though. Not so much in any other role!

someone please help me out here. When he was running - who was the guy he swapped shirts with? Thought it was the teacher from last series (especially when he said you'd be a good teacher in te pub after) but I thought he got shot for refusing to join up in the last series??? TIA

I didn't even bother with it, watched the last series and I wasn't putting myself through that again, it was miserable, dire television

I think you're right, baldisbeautiful I think Bert swapped with the schoolteacher (if he is still a schoolteacher, not sure). I'm certain he wasn't shot.

It is very bleak. However, I've watched some of the, very similar vein, channel 4 programme, the Mill. Now that is far worse, it's like a soap opera, light version of the Village!

I like it. Thought Lord Kilmartin was a bit too cartoonish, though. baldisbeautiful, you're right, the shirt-swapper was the teacher from the last series. He wasn't shot, he was imprisoned for being a conscientious objector. I think he came back at the end of the last series and was ostracised by the villagers.

Haven't started this new series yet but loved it last time! Surely no one thinks Maxine Peake was shite? She was amazing and made a brilliant dysfunctional couple with John Simm.

My only gripe was old blokey did NOT look 113 or whatever it was meant to be.

I had missed this last night so thanks for the tip off. I quite like the fact that it was bleak. Too many period dramas see the past through rose tinted specs but the reality is that for many people life was bleak in this period. Not cheery up telly though. John Simm and Maxine Peake are always fab.

" Surely no one thinks Maxine Peake was shite? She was amazing and made a brilliant dysfunctional couple with John Simm."

Goodness no! I'm rather liking it, and it's beautifully filmed.

Agree about rose tinted specs (I won't be popular in saying so, but thinking that awful TV adaptation of the Lark Rise book particularly)

I made it as far as the 'boy in the field doing so srhing he shouldn't be doing in a field' episode during the last series. Confused That, on top of the misery and woe, was a scene too far for me.

Is this series any better so far? If you can tell much from one episode.

It's know as "it's grim oop North!" in our house. Haven't a clue what's going on and I watched all the first series Confused

I don't remember anyone being gay last time (possibly because they were too busy being stoic) and this series there's men in three-piece suits snogging all over the place. I don't know which man-in-suit is which though.

Won't be watching again.

Coumarin · 18/08/2014 02:50

Men in three piece suits sounds like an improvement in last series.

I taught the young man playing Bert Middleton when he came to a youth drama group I helped to run. He was a lovely boy and I'm so excited that one of our kids has got a big break Grin .
