Anyone watch Ian Wright's unfit kids?

I've just watched this and it made me really sad, that one boy's mother was just so defeated and passing on all her own neuroses to her son who seemed like a basically sweet kid.
Sport in schools still lets unsporty kids down doesn't it? Why can't they do more fitness and less competitive sport? I am utterly useless at all sports but will quite happily flail about in an aerobics class or in a swimming pool, there should be more stuff like that for unsporty kids like I was. Why can't they just go for a brisk walk in Games instead of being made to feel usless on a tennis court? It is pretty dull to spend an hour fishing tennis balls out of the side netting like I always did. What is the point in activities which just turn some people off sport/exercise altogether?

Agree with everything you say Justamum. I hated PE lessons at school, apart from badminton, which we only got to do for half a term once a year. Since leaving school I've finally learned to swim and, about five years ago, took up jogging, which progressed to real running and I now take part in races regularly and enjoy it immensely. It's about finding your niche I guess... which schools don't allow. You have to fit in with them.

DD and DS don't get on with PE at school and both of them have said if they could just use the fitness suite, running and rowing machines two or three times a week they would love that. They are just not competitive in a physical way.

Going back to Ian Wright tonight on that programme... I could have wept for the poor bloke. He tried so hard and the knock-backs he got when trying to find sponsors was unbelievable. And when he asked the parents to do a bit of sport and lead by example, you could see instantly why that poor little Jerome was in the state he was. I was in tears for the poor kid.

On again next week... I guess they will do a catch up bit at the beginning.

Jerome's mum obviously felt guilty about how she'd passed on her own eating habits/lack of exercise to her son, putting his health at risk. She also felt so embarrassed about the way she looked that she couldn't swallow her pride and give him the moral support that kicking a ball around would provide.

After all the toxic parenting stuff (Macdonald-eating, working class kids killing themselves at one end, pushy-parented too-many-after-school-club-middle-class-kids-with-no-time-to-get-bored at the other end) it was interesting to see the musical boy, who had plenty of books at home but an overwhelming anti-sport attitude which he'd picked up from his family.

i really really liked Gabbie, thought she was such a lovely girl

and the excuses the parents came away with were as childish as the childrens! "oh ive got a sore leg" "ill get a note from the doctor" they should be ashamed of themselves

i agree that it is a shame for Jerome, his mother has passed on all her bad habits to him

God I hated PE at school - I was so utterly crap at any competitive sport and got really disheartened. One summer term we did aerobics which I really enjoyed as there was no competition and I could just get on with flailing round like a frog in a blender to my hearts content. I enjoyed swimming too as again I was allowed to go at my own pace and didn't have to participate in races.

I really felt for the kids. IW didn't seem to understand that it was all about motivation as he has never had a problem with this wrt sport.

I watched that and thought he should be running the parents through it at the same time as the kids
Jerome stands FA chance IMO unless his mother makes some serious lifestyle changes as well.

And when that Jerome's mum in the red t-shirt refused to stand in goal coz she said she wouldn't want to embarrass herself on national telly!!!! Oh how we laughed. And telling your son that if he wanted to die, she could 'push him in front of a fucking train or somefink' is ok is it?
