Is anyone watching this? I'm a little bit Shock to be honest. I've realised that I know v little about the religion.

I'm watching it - it looks interesting!
There was a really fascinating thread here a while ago, where 'Mormon underwear' was mentioned... I had not a clue what it meant, was intrigued at the time, but clearly then forgot all about it They showed a bit of it right at the beginning, can't wait to know more.
Also the bit about baptising the dead????

If anyone baptises me after I am gone, I will come back and haunt them. Or I might, if I believed in ghosts.

They've picked him for this show as a sort of personable everyman, haven't they?

I knew nothing at all about the strange white underwear and clearly missed the thread on here.

Baptising the dead is slightly odd unless they simply mean prayers/dab of water on the head - I fear they mean full immersion and that in my opinion is quite bizarre.

I hope they explain more about the 2 yrs mission ie can you leave? What happens if you walk away? Why not just go to Bible College? I understand the dedication element of it but honestly? 2 yrs?

Gosh that was a bit of a ramble but yes, you're right Josh seems a lovely lad. He needs a hug though.

I worked with a morman woman years ago and even got invited to her wedding, it was a bit like a day out to 1950. There was a big speech about how now she was married she should keep the house nice and make herself pretty for her husband and not burden him with her worries. She was a lovely very intelligent girl & to be honest none of it sat quite right with me.

If you want to know more, read The Friday Gospels by Jenn Ashworth. It is a novel about a teenaged Mormon girl. Excellent read. Good story.

'Food and haircuts'

I love that it's not food and sundries, but specifically haircuts.

Hey, are there set haircuts, or is it just the short back and sides type thing.

I'm fascinated by this show but really hope they don't go down the 'this religion is weird' route.

I feel for that young lad and want to give him a hug, glad he has others round him for support.

I'm not religious myself but hope the show is respectful.

Never allowed to be alone isn't right, surely? It'd drive most people completely over the edge + no radio/tv/phone calls home etc.

This is so very controlling, I suppose it is to keep them away from anything that might tempt them away from the mission, and knowing the other one is always there stops them doing anything "wrong"

He is saying it's great - his face says a different tale

I missed the start, who is the man hovering around in the background when they are in the flat?

TheSpottedZebra · 26/06/2014 23:02

The other young chap is the snr missionary, who is his constant companion throughout the 2 yr mission and sort of trains him up.

The older chap is a PR chap from the church, specifically there for the filming.

I just think that 'religion' should not be that hard - yes give things up, make changes but that was a little strange in terms of the amount of control imposed on the missionaries.

Baptising the dead is done by proxy, they don't baptise dead bodies.

A friend of mine became a Mormon. She had slept with everyone in the village by the time she reached the age of consent, done every drug known to man by 18, dropped out of uni. She went to work in Italy as an au pair, became a Mormon, came back to UK, went on mission (where she was with her minder all the time - it seemed like a cult), met a nice Mormon boy, got married and had a load of babies for Jesus. She's never worked - her kids are now all in their teens. It seemed like an escape route to me, a get out clause for having to get a job and do something useful with her life. The wedding was bizarre - the Mormons smiled so much it was as if they were all on drugs. I still see her from time to time, and flashes of the old her, when she was fun and had a mind of her own, but most of the time it's just platitudes and a lot of Jesus. I miss her.

Thanks Zebra, I did wonder if he was there because of the filming.

Yeah, I get that Myrtle. I still think it's wrong to do, and my haunting promise stands.

Ooh! dim I honestly thought they prayed over/for the dead and maybe blessed the bodies. I know even less after watching the stuffing prog than I thought

It definitely seems far more culty than I thought all Mormon knowledge coming from the Osmonds I can see how Joseph Smith could invent it - new country needing its own religion etc
