Shall we have a Netflix films recommendation thread?

Ok, no idea whether this will take off, but it seemed like it was worth a try!

There's so much choice on Netflix I thought it would be good to start a recommendations thread.

I suggest putting the film title in BOLD, then an emoticon or a few words to help others scan the thread to find something to suit their mood. Hope others will join me on this thread as I'm always looking for something new to try!

Working Girl
Wine Empowering drama
Flowers Heartwarming & romantic

Watched this 80s classic in the middle of last week. A drama centring on the tribulations of a young working-class secretary trying to get ahead despite the machinations of her scheming, two-faced boss. Also features the lovely Harrison Ford as a man who likes and respects the main character for who she is, and supports her in her career. I'd give it an 8/10.

hoping other people join me on this thread so that I don't just look like a lone netflix weirdo

Just Friends

Grin Hilarious

This isn't a film I would normally have watched, but I'm glad I did, it was actually laugh out loud funny, which is rare for me. It has Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris in it.

This is the netflix blurb - After being snubbed by his high school crush, an overweight nice guy moves to Los Angeles, where he slims down and blossoms into a womanizer. But when he's stranded in his hometown, he bumps into the girl who once broke his heart.

I would give this film a 9/10.

I'm addicted to netflix so I will be back with more little gems I've found on there. Great idea for a thread.

21 Jump Street
Absolutely hilarious in places, if a tad lowbrow Wink

The Lives Of Others
Just great! Very affecting cinema.

Hamlet 2
A very underrated Steve Coogan movie.

Meeting Evil
Luke Wilson, Samuel L.Jackson. Good thriller.

Red Lights
Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver. Great thriller, was surprised it isn't better known.

Pandorum
Spooky sci-fi with Dennis Quaid.

I really enjoyed the butchers wife. It's an oldie with a young Demi Moore in but it made me feel good.

American Mary is good if you want something a bit gruesome and gritty.

Bicentennial man - a film with robin Williams as a robot. Really touching and a metaphor for so many human rights issues.

Ooh I loved 21 Jump Street as well - I was in tears of laughter at some points Grin

I've got The Help in my to-watch list too Tess Tackle.

Here are some more recs

Beware of Mr Baker
Shock A surprising, but fascinating documentary about the drummer Ginger Baker, who formerly played in Cream, and recorded albums with legendary African musician Fela Kuti. Baker's temperamental display is on full show in parts of the documentary, as are his 3 ex-wives (and 4th, and surely soon-to-also-be ex-wife). Though it's a documentary it's dry by no means, and even if you're not interested in drumming or drummers - I'm certainly not - it really draws you in.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High
Smile Gently funny
Wine Empowering

A left-field 80s high-school comedy. I was a bit put off by the 'wacky' cover image on the Netflix page but don't be put off, this film would be an ideal companion to other 80s films like Pretty in Pink or The Breakfast Club. It stars the young Jennifer Jason Leigh as a high school girl trying to negotiate her way through the sex-obsessed pressures of American high school.

Ooh and agreed on The Lives of Others too, great film - maybe not one to watch if you want something lightweight - very thought-provoking.

The Help lovely film.
Once great understated love story, gentle and a bit poignant
People like us much better than I thought it would be.
Mysterious skin kept me riveted but it's a very hard watch and probably triggering, it was not the off-beat friendship film I expected but much, much darker and some of it a little horrific.

I know that feeling StopSquabbling, it does seem like there's a lot of trash on Netflix. Some gems too, though, if you know what to look for.

Robocop
Angry Action film!
Watched this a couple of weekends ago. Critiques around the internet say that the original Robocop is a 'searing comment on authoritarian and big-business society', which I suppose is true if you're really into subtext, on the other hand it is enjoyable just on the level of being a comic-book style action movie, although it is quite gory in parts so I would not recommend if you don't like that sort of thing. Another enjoyable thing about it is that Leland Palmer out of Twin Peaks is one of hte baddies in this film.
