What would happen if the lights went out!?!

Looking forward to watching this, it has had good reviews. Good night on TV tonight with Under the Dome afterwards--makes up for all the rubbish on Saturday night-- Anyone else giving it a go?

Talkin I'm glad for the sake of New York. Would be nice to believe it would be the same here. Let's hope we never find out grin

Beyond you think the way I think grin I'm petrified because when we changed our heating system we lost our cold tank. Even at the time I was thinking about the OFR and the water tank seemed necessary... So I may have instant hot water but come the apocalypse I'll have to 'walk to the river' - DH's answer for everything, even though it would be a 2 mile walk past the zombies and water is very heavy to carry by hand hmm

Do you not think that a flat or council house would actually be less of a target than a nice country house? As a general rule, the poor don't take from the poor and there is usually a greater sense of community in a sink estate than any country village

I don't agree, I think you're a lot more likely to be mugged or burgled on a sink estate.

in deprived areas morality is a moveable feast.

in obscenely rich areas it left years ago

Dont think it ever took root tbh..

MrsWembley, I do. My dad was an electrical engineer. grin

I have a big BBQ, a wind up radio, an extensive Duke of Edinburgh kit, an open fire in the living room, a river across the field at the back of us, and I am good at killing pheasants with the car. We should be fine. Don't even need a generator, not sure what we would use it for if it came to that. I would not enjoy digging out and using an ersatz earth toilet though. Have done that before and it is minging. I will probably just hold on until Armageddon has passed. grin

As a result of this thread, I've done a mahoosive extra shop of tinned goods, ordered wind up torches and candles from Amazon and cleared space in the garage to accomodate it all.

I added bottled water onto mine blush

my ofrs stock is going in the attic

I keep 750 gallons of rainwater stored in my garden.

eddiemairswife Thu 12-Sep-13 20:13:44

I'm still waiting to use the radio battery I got for the Millennium.

VerySmallSqueak Thu 12-Sep-13 20:34:44

grin at BoffinMum holding on until Armageddon has passed.

I second reading Alex Scarrows books. They're an eye opener.

FunnyRunner Fri 13-Sep-13 15:54:23

Can talkinpeace / anyone recommend a good rainwater storage barrel?

Talkinpeace Fri 13-Sep-13 16:43:35

Our 330 gallon one is an old orange juice container
and then we have 5 x 50 gallon linked by siphon by the greenhouse
the big butt (as DH calls it) came from here
shop.smithsofthedean.co.uk/recycled-1520-litre--330-gallon-water-tank-266-p.asp
and then we have a couple of extra buts dotted around ....

You lot are having an effect on me. I was stuck on the train to London yesterday and eyeing up the blackberries and so on as potential food, and then I was checking out my fellow passengers for their BBQ potential. They were a bit slim so I reckoned they would only really be good for stock TBH.

Talkinpeace Sat 14-Sep-13 20:08:42

Boffin
Outside DCs primary school was an ancient hedge (around 600 years old) and I used to stand and scrump while waiting for them - the LOOKS I got!

Fellow Passengers .... watch "Eat the Rich"

BoffinMum Sat 14-Sep-13 20:40:51

I was in first class so not a strategy I would be happy about. grin

I'm watching it now on 4/7 and am freaked out a bit! I am looking at all the stuff that needs power. My gas fire uses a remote! How could I turn that on??

Adds to shopping list, candles, matches, wind up torch, radio. Foil blankets. What else?

Iamhappyanddelighted Tue 17-Sep-13 17:39:03

I watched it last night and it freaked the fuck out of me, especially because about 85 mins in, just after the sister of the guy in hospital let out a blood curdling " nooooooooooooooo" scream, my tv suddenly turned itself off and I was plunged into pitch black darkness on my own...in blackout! I swear my heartbeat didn't return to normal until about 2am!

Rummikub Tue 17-Sep-13 17:48:12

Oh my god how scary for you! I have been making lists for things to have in my doom cupboard. I even looked at powdered milk in tesco!

Is it a one off prog?

It says series 1 ep1 on 4od, so dont know if there are more coming or its thats a mistake?

VerySmallSqueak Wed 18-Sep-13 19:43:55

I assumed it was a one off drama-documentary,but it'd be great to have more.

I have been making sure my doomsday prepper oil lamps are functioning well, and feeding the dog and cat good protein wink.

Rummikub Wed 18-Sep-13 22:58:04

I couldn't bring myself to throw away meds I don't need anymore, like tabs for nausea. Might be useful in an apocalypse...
