Yeah am watching, waiting for the fireworks, the single mums aren't going to get on are they?

HeadFairy · 11/07/2013 21:14

So far, so judgy...

Very judgy....

Oh it's vile. Line up working poor against benefits recipients and let them scrap it out.

They've cherry picked people who fit the profile perfectly... the unemployed graduate who over spends on designer trainers, the family who refuse to get rid of their pets...

I don't think so! Will be interesting to see if their opinions change.. Hoping it doesn't turn into car crash TV!

That I don't think so was too the single mum's not getting on comment! Not that I don't think it's judgy because so far it is!

The thing people don't understand about benefits is that the system wasn't set up to be a "safety net", it was set up to ensure people had a decent quality of life. Cutting them back to the point where families living on benefits are starving defeats the point of them. What needs to change is wages need to be higher so that work pays more than benefits. Not that benefits need to be cut further.

I agree headfairy, wages do need to be higher.

What I don't like is the sweeping generalisation of these programs.

Yy to headfairy

And all these "taxpayers" moaning about the benefits recipients appearing to have more than them - the majority of that money will disappear when the children are 16. The workers will probably be home owners - benefits recipients are trapped in rental. None of them are looking long term.

Head fairy - I wouldn't expect any analysis of that kind on this programme.

The population is being softened up for further cuts to benefits.

With the help of various 'celebrities' who are paid obscene amounts of money.

Report
TattooEnvy · 11/07/2013 21:23

I agree ubik, creating an outrage to get people in agreement when the cuts come in.

These things always seem to be approached in an arse about way.... just like the arguments about public sector pensions. If private sector pension provisions are shit, how does making everyone elses pensions shit solve that?

If wages are shit and hard working people can't afford a decent life style, how does cutting benefits further help anyone? Because you can bet your bottom dollar those cuts aren't passed on in tax cuts (unless you earn over £150,000 a year that is)

ps, I do know the tax free allowance has been raised, but everyone benefits from that, it's not targetted at the lowest earners.

bico · 11/07/2013 21:24

Not sure that is true re all the taxpayers having more. One taxpayer household income is £1300 and the benefit family he visited had £1800/month.

dingit · 11/07/2013 21:24

So a 39 year old who has never worked has fathered 4 children? Maybe if they limited child benefit to 2 children, it would make people think a bit more?

Just turned over.

DH, who has walked over (not literally) hot coals to provide for his family has just started shouting at the TV...and DH is much more Guardian than DM.

Report
HeadFairy · 11/07/2013 21:26

Exactly bico... the solution to that is to increase the taxpayer household's income. Not reduce the benefit families income.

Report
Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 21:26

At the moment bico that's the point. The majority of that is coming in because there are young children in the house. Those working will continue to earn. And surely if they're working and getting 13k with children they will be getting a fair old whack of tax credits (in which case aren't they on benefits too?)

I think you need a bit of both. If I could claim £1800/month I would quit work tomorrow.

Chubfuddler · 11/07/2013 21:27

Head fairy the tax allowance is tapered now - if you earn over a certain level you don't get it at all.

I wouldn't be board being a SAHP. I'd love it. I could get all the ironing and cleaning done. I really, really would love it.
