This is the official thread for the Queens tennis unless someone has already set one up in which case this can fade into oblivion

This is the first tournament of the grass court season Grin. Today we can expect 4 times Queens champion Leyton Hewitt as well as a couple of Brits playing. Andy Murray, who is the top seed, has a bye into round 2. We also have Tsonga playing in both the singles and doubles (with Mahut).

And we're back on the beeb so no annoying ad breaks jumping in and disturbing our tennis watching drooling over the players at change of ends So only 5 hours to go until it's starts Grin

Marking my place Smile

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 10/06/2013 10:32

Marking place! A bit busy this week to watch much, but I'm there (and here) in spirit Smile

Witt · 10/06/2013 10:34

I've just realised we are away this weekend so there will need to be some serious negotiation if I am going to be able to stay in the holiday cottage to watch the final whilst everyone else goes out for the day I guess it will depend on whether Murray makes the final.

Marking place.

Come on Andy!

Raahh · 10/06/2013 11:07

Hoping I get to watch, but first day back at school and dd1 has been sent home illSad.

Hewitt and Dimitrov both due to play today. Think this may be Hewitt's last year on tour- I do like Hewitt, and he has been such a worthy champion at Queens.

And I know it's been Aegon for a while, but I still think of it as the Stella Artois tournament!Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/06/2013 11:09

Yay!

Queens is such a lovely tournament, and yes Raahh I will always think of it as the Stella Artois! I'm always surprised when everything is blue instead of red :)

Raahh · 10/06/2013 11:28

Ali- exactly! all wrong. Just like seeing Wimbledon decorated all pinky/purple at the OlympicsGrin

Witt · 10/06/2013 11:51

Has Hewitt had any decent results in the last couple of years? It feels like he should probably have retired gracefully a couple of years ago.

Chubfuddler · 10/06/2013 11:53

He's only 31 - I googled him last night I thought he was much older. I suppose he was very young when he had his glory days.

Witt · 10/06/2013 11:53

Raahh what is it with your sickly family trying to prevent you watching the tennis? You know what, I think they are just attention seekers missing your company Smile

I hope your daughter feels better soon so you can get back to watching the tennis

Witt I KNOW!!! Grin

Poor DD1, she is very rarely ill at all, and is devastated because it was the first day of football club today, and she had new boots and everythingSad
She's fast asleep, bless her. sadly, dd2 is not

Hewitt was very young when he first appeared, and I loved him because he was very Agassi-like- a baseliner who still managed to play well on grass. I know he had hip injurys/surgery, he just seemed to not quite live up to his early stuff.
But yes- he does seem to have been around forever!

janey223 · 10/06/2013 12:22

worst week of the year around here can't bloody move and can't even get into the pub

Chubfuddler · 10/06/2013 12:25

No one is going to feel sorry for you if you live in Kensington.

IreneR · 10/06/2013 13:19

Fed fan that I am, I'll be following the action in Halle, so thanks for this thread. It will allow me to keep up with Queens in a very enjoyable way.

(very funny about Kensington, Chubfuddler.)

marjproops · 10/06/2013 17:01

always wanted to go there but can never find out how to/where to/how much tickets and stuff.

soooooo good to see the grass courts again. and yy still stella artois to me too. even bought a small bottle of it to -hic-shelebrate Grin.

well done Dan Evans, comisos to Wardy he had it in the bag and did a wawrinka at the end Hmm.
looking forward to Lleyton, yes he HAS been around forever. feel sorry hes had so many injuries. but agree maybe he should do a Roddick and call it a day and go out on a not so high.

Witt · 10/06/2013 17:05

Another one to whom it is Stella Artois.

There seems to be lots of slipping today. It's a shame Ward lost just now when he was in a winning position twice.

I'm rooting for Russell in this match - I've never warmed to Hewitt.

I went to this on a corporate jolly back before the recession. It was ace we drank so much champagne.

marjproops · 10/06/2013 19:31

Andy doesnt play till wednesday, he has a bye.

not ever sure what to think of that, wouldnt he need to get as much pre-GS parctice in as he can? same with the other top players.

must admit i was never really a fan but i miss Andy Roddick! he was good last year and his post match interview about liking the Wurzels was hilarious!

LadyBeagleEyes · 10/06/2013 19:44

I hope Andy has recovered from his injury. Not a time to be going into Wimbledon, especially with Rafa back and on form.

noddyholder · 10/06/2013 19:46

I was surprised to switch tv on and see this today! I thought I had had my tennis fix with The French Now this I will get nothing done this month

MultumInParvo · 10/06/2013 19:48

My DH was there today. He is now prostrate on the sofa snoring.

TheDoctrineOfAllan · 10/06/2013 19:57

noddyholder We are being spoilt with tennis at the moment.

I can't understand why they give some players byes instead of inviting a couple of extra wildcards to play.

OP posts:
Chubfuddler · 10/06/2013 21:23

I suppose they want to guarantee some of the big names will be there and get through, making the event attractive to the corporate sponsors and hospitality sorts, especially as nadal and federer have snubbed queens for Halle I didn't get all this from google oh no.

noddyholder · 11/06/2013 11:59

AH bloody rain
