god I'm so ancient and sad!

I have just - oh my god - logged onto a Buffy and Angel fansite to discuss my bereftitude (?) at having watched the very final episode of the latter ever on DVD. But everyone there was born in the 1990s! (Many of them like 'drawing, Charmed and horseriding' - shudder).

Christ I'm 36 - I really should be over this by now. But I've followed these programmes for more than 6 years, through two hormonally-charged pregnancies and resultant sleep deprivations and I feel a little sad and lost.

I mean, for heaven's sake. A Buffy fansite. As if I don't have better things to do. I bet if I put MY birthdate down on there I'd have the cops round my house thinking I was trying to groom someone.

(slinks away, feeling a bit weird and creepy)

There are loads of Buffy + Angel fans about who aren't 12.

Have you seen the short-lived series Whedon did after Buffy/Angel? It's called Firefly, and is very good.

Flamesparrow · 08/02/2006 11:25

Yup, loads of us out there of all ages. I think it just tends to be the 12 year olds who post on the sites .

We can mourn them with you if you'd like?

I'd second the vote for Firefly, and Serenity - the film. Oooh, and if you can get into it, there is a graphic novel called Flay (or Fray?? something like that) about many years in the future, and slayers again... Only just started it, but its good.

I haven't seen Serenity the film yet.

I was not interested in Firefly, but DH bought it for me, and I really grew to like it. Bit freaky seeing loads of minor Buffy and Angel actors in it.

I love Buffy & Angel and was born in the 1970s!! Have to say I also love The OC and any John Hughes-style teen angst movies..... I am 30 this year, but can't imagine ever getting too old for this stuff!!

Are you watching Smallville at the mo? Funny moment in this week's ep when James Marsters' character says "There's no such thing as vampires"

Oh how lovely you all are! I feel better already. It's nice to have fellow mourners. I was beginning to fear that I should be growing up and watching serious documentaries and learning to bake my own cakes.

I did flirt with the idea of watching Smallville but James Marsters looked a little, well, shorter than I'd imagined him and I felt I needed a little more time... I don't accept change easily as you've probably guessed by now!

I haven't seen firefly... maybe I should. Though promise me you'll all stick around so I don't have to talk about it with the 12-year-olds?

You can watch serious documentaries, bake your own cakes and love Buffy. Why not?

There's an MN member called Serenity, after the movie/ship/show. And this thread has lots of people talking about Buffy, well, Spike actually. In between lists of silly hippy names.

Personally, although I think the Spike character is ... foxy? ... I doubt the actor would do much for me in another role. Much as Seth Green is lovely as Oz, but in other roles, he's just Seth Green.

Cappuccino - I'm - ahem - older than you are and I like Buffy etc.
So you don't need to be embarrassed, though maybe I do ...

pmsl @ Smallville! That's gotta be one of the stupidest episodes ever . How exactly he managed to keep a straight face.... I'm getting very confused by it all though - were all the cast of Buffy just really short?? He seems tiny, plus the hair, accent, and walking in sunlight (also very confused with Bones and seeing Angel walking in sunlight) - I keep wanting to warn them .

NQC - Noooo, do not be mean about Seth Green - lovely in all guises . (I have a thing for indie geeky blokes though...). Best has to be Idle Hands - a zombie .

Moyasmum - mine is also being raised on it (unfortunately I'm not as good as you, and am on an unedited version) - she tells me if it is scary and I have to turn it off quick. We have great Grrr Argh impressions too

Seth Green is sorta cute as an actor. I suspect he's a bit pocket-sized, like James Marsters.

But I think the Oz/Spike characters are what's really cute.

Report
Flamesparrow · 08/02/2006 14:19

Yup, the characters do make them moreso. James Marsters is much less appealing as the smallville professor guy (more appealing as evil alien smallville guy though....)

It is the same if you go on a Harry Potter website, although I suppose HP is a bit younger than Buffy.

I read for 2 minutes a bunch of teenagers swooning over Rupert Grint instead of discussing the finer points of the books, and then leave sighing at the state of written English amongst teenagers today.

Yes that Smallville episode was pretty awful - lame attempt to bring in a vampire storyline, then it all turned out to be something to do with vampire bats and meteor rocks... It would be so much better if they get rid of Lana, she is so very irritating. She's got to go eventually though hasn't she, now that they've brought in Lois - I like her.

V strange hearing James Marsters sounding like a regular American - I had grown quite fond of his Dick Van Dyke-esque accent! I think Seth Green is cute - though definitely seems pocket-sized in Austin Powers.

I'm a Xander girl myself - before Anya at least - I loved him and Cordy together, vv funny.

oooohh someone remembered me!

I'll come back to this thread as I have to go and pick up DSs!

But JM is a shortarse (but lovely) he is also far too old for those babies who post on the buffy sites (he's 45, 46?)

I've just started posting on the SFX forum and that's divided between 15 yr old girls and pervy old men/star trek geeks - fun to read though.

So happy to see so many buffy fans who are as old as me and it does - sorry gals - make me happy that some are older too. Actually my loyalties lie with Spike too, though the children on the website don't seem to understand the complex psychology behind his sexual attraction. (And Rupert Grint? Why!!!! - you're right lonelymum, it's tragic how few words these kids can spell. maybe somewhere we can download the cyber equivalent of a red pen?)

Maybe someone could update me on the plot of Smallville - I've only ever got to watch about 10 mins of it at a time and it all gets very confused. For a start, who the hell is everyone?

Anyway I'm off to look at this forum serenity - let me know if there's anything particular worth seeking out. I'm like a lost toddler in a supermarket in these things.

I'm pretty lost with it myself atm (it's so slow compared to here!) Tbh I just tend to click on 'posts since last visit' and then look at the topics that interest me - they've just been trawling for opinions on the possible Spike TV Movie, for next months magazine, so it was nice to post on that.

Smallville - not to sure tbh, only saw season 1 and half of season 4 so a lot of the background stuff goes over my head!

Smallville - quick recap. End of last season - another meteor shower, and a new spaceship arrived with 3 bad guys (or was it 2???) out to kill Clark... woohoo, and surprisingly enough he did away with em (locked em in one of those crystal things like in Supergirl). His dad (Krypton dad) wasn't happy with something (forgotten what) and nicked his powers. Him and Lana decided that since the world wasn't ending (and he didn't have to hide anything), they might as well start seeing each other again.

Chloe told him that she knew his "secret".

Lex and Lana had seen the new spaceship, but when she went to show Clark, it was gone, and Lex told her she was nuts (cut to shot of spaceship in one of his many labs, and a blobby guy glooping out the bottom - Hooray for Spike! )

Something happened, he got his powers back.

No Spike for a couple of episodes and much sulking from female population

All at Uni - Lana and Chloe together, Clark somewhere else. Enter Spike as professor - hires Clark as research assistant to investigate the evil Lex Luthor (modern day Stalin/Hitler according to Spike). Lois is floating around, god knows what she's doing though apart from being painfully thin with a boob job.

Clark gets all jealous if he sees her with a man.

Oooh, rudeness between him and Lana (some things are NOT needed to be shown!!!!!)

Errrr... think thats about it. Oh, and he can still jump really high but hasn't twigged he can fly.

And a quick Oi about Mr Grint... my DH has developed a disturbing resemblance to him in the latest film (he's being teased soooooooooo much ) - think its a mixture of haircut and build rather than actual looks though!!!

He now sounds really scary
