Programme about Tourette's on ITV tonight...

9pm I think. It's about a kind of summer camp for children with Tourette's. I've just been reading in yesterday's Guardian about one of the teenage girls in it who feels (Guardian says with some justification) that it's been edited - for the purposes of "good telly" and she's been unfairly portrayed as the 'baddy'.

I don't know anything about Tourette's but I was interested to read in the Guardian article that part of it is shouting out things that most of us may think at times, but are able to keep a lid on. This girl shouts out the N-word and the derogatory shortened term for Pakistani. I can't make sense of this - surely it's not saying that most people would like to go round shouting racially offensive terms but don't because of social niceties?

I'll try and find the Guardian article to link to - that might help!

here

Thoughts?

Did anyone else watch it? And why are you posting like you've got Tourette's, RTKM ?

We watched it and found it very interesting but I did feel sorry for Jenny. She has obv had lots of bullying over her lifetime and not only did she had tourettes but she was vastly overweight and bullied for that as well. I thought it was very sad and did think that Jess was a pain but it must be very difficult to control.

Having said that, I do think that some of it was put on. Shouting out 'Twin Towers' in chicago was a bit off to say the least.

It seems that the verbal tics are not random to me - I always thought they were. It's more of a compulsion to shout out the most inappropriate thing in the worst possible place - like the "Twin Towers" thing - and usuing the n-word to black people etc. That's what I didn't understand - I thought it was more random, but if it were they would be shouting "turnip!" or "umbrella!"

So what did you think of Jessica? No doubt she had a lot of problems but I felt a lot of her tics weren't at all genuine. Yes, I felt desperately sorry for Jenny too. I liked the boys - though could not see what magical attraction the lad from Preston had to make him such a babe magnet

I thought Jess was someone I would not like to know! she was pretty and slim and not obvious with her Tour Syndrome and she was a bully. I felt she was putting it on.

It was Jenny who was from Preston....not Sam!! i cannot imagine why everyone thought he was a babe magnet either....the boys really flourished though, didnt they? Couldnt understand the Glasgow girl very well.

It was the Glasgow girl I felt most sorry for actually (and understood her perfectly ). Did you hear her mum saying she'd not left the house for over a year after she was diagnosed? She obviously really struggled to keep herself together. More physical tics than verbal with her, I thought.

for all of them though. Must be very hard to live with - hard enough being a teenager!

Can I just say that tourettes cannot be put on. These children would have been dx using a very strict diagnostic tool. Also remember Jessica had Aspergers too making a very explosive mix for the poor girl.

I watched this and it was really interesting. I don't think the tics were put on TBH, she was taking heavy amounts of medication everyday which 'helped' control things, but not fully.

It seems to me that they have this compusion to shout out the most inappropriate words, Sam (the guy) tried to explain it that he cannot help saying the worst thing possible like n**r even though he wouldn't dream of saying it normally.

I did feel sorry for Jenny, but I also didn't think Jess was unlike any average 15 yr old self obsessed teenager tbh. The tourettes didn't help much, but all teen girls are self obsessed and can be mean. She did try with Jenny early on, but Jenny didn't want to know and it was as if she (Jenny) didn't understand tourettes at times, accusing Jess of faking it, when she had seen her do it to everyone (shouting p*i n**r etc all over the place)

watched some of it and thought what a sweet bunch of kids they were, on the whole. i was glad the programme managed to get this across. but i did think it was classic insensitive telly. had to stop watching when they made it into a soap opera towards the end.
