Ask a Teenage Girl anything

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 16:53:35

Hey guys, I'm a fairly average teenage girl. If you want a teenagers view on something then feel free to ask. Sometimes its better to get a teenagers point if view on something to see what its like for them. So feel free to ask.

YuleBritannia Sun 02-Dec-12 16:54:46

Are you aware that there are women on this forum? Not just men

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 16:56:24

Rossignol or Salomon skis, which should I buy?

What is that duck face pouty thing that teenage girls do on FB all about?

Bluestocking Sun 02-Dec-12 16:56:57

What do you think a hipster is?

TheNebulousBoojum Sun 02-Dec-12 16:59:14

What, again?

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:00:08

@YuleBritannia Of course I am this is mumsnet but I still find its better to have a teenagers view on things

@VivaLeBeaver Both are good brands. Both have good racers on their teams and both are well respected in the industry. The best way to find out which brand and model you prefer is to go to a demo day and try each one.for several hours. Remember how a ski is tuned will make a big difference in how it performs. The base bevel will make a difference in the turn initiation, how the edge bevel is cut will make a difference in how easy they hold. An expert skier will adjust to a new pair of skis in less than an hour. That is one reason that the magazine demos are limited to 2-3 runs per tester. I repeat try to demo each brand and model, talk to the ski shop employees and find out what they use. But I personally prefer Rossignol as they have sharper turns

Hope this helps x

Is Twitter broke?

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:02:54

@SparklingBrook the duck face is a horrible expression girls do in facebook picture eg. they think it looks good, it doesn't

@bluestocking a hipster is a fashion subculture like an emo or goth

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:03:57

@TessGoesDirectToBethlehem I don't think so I don't actually use twitter

Bluestocking Sun 02-Dec-12 17:04:19

OK. So how would I recognise a hipster teen in the street? I know what a goth and an emo look like.

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:05:00

Thanks hipster, I was leaning towards the Rossignols. grin

andadietcoke Sun 02-Dec-12 17:05:27

Heehee. This is like asking Siri questions.

SoggySummer Sun 02-Dec-12 17:05:48

Oh and I thought hipsters were trousers that sat on the hips instead of waist! wink

It makes me laugh Hipster. I am sure they think they look lovely but they would look better if they just smiled. smile

DS1 is 13. He would love to have a girlfriend but all the 13 year old girls look about 25 and terrifying. When does the gap start to lessen?

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:06:18

You copied that from yahoo answers! Naughty Hipster!

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:07:25

@ VivaLeBeaver no problem x

@Bluestocking bobble hats, knitted jumpers with animals, mustaches or super hero logos on them, skinny jeans, big glasses old fashioned technology that they think is ironic.

SoggySummer Sun 02-Dec-12 17:08:45

where do all year 9 girls get the energy from to be so bloody vile to each other??

Why do they make such drama over the most mundane crap?

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:09:48

My dd likes moustache stuff and knitted animal jumpers. I must have a hipster pre teen.

RoffleCopter Sun 02-Dec-12 17:10:01

How will I die?

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune Sun 02-Dec-12 17:10:02

Are you aware that anyone who actually is a hipster would absolutely deny being one?

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:10:05

@They are as well I think but hey

@VivaLeBeaver Aww you got me, I would go for Rossignols though the turns are a lot smoother. I do ski quite a lot.

@SparkingBrook when they get to about fifteen they should realise how stupid they look and stop following the crowd.

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:10:29

She has huge glasses as well.

What is the moustache thing all about?

How many under 15s can grow an ironic moustache?

RoffleCopter Sun 02-Dec-12 17:13:30

What's this?

<points at a thing>

willow777 Sun 02-Dec-12 17:13:44

when will I get rid of this eternal cold? It's driving me mad

I think Hipster started this thread for people to ask about the workings of the teenage mind.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:15:03

@VivaLeBeaver You should be proud of yourself you have raised her correctly ;)

@ SoggySummer I wish I could say. Teenage girls are just made to be horrible to each other its just the way it is.

@RoffleCopter probably from a heart disaese as its the most common cause of death in the uk.

@TrillsCarolsoutoftune yeah I just put HipsterTeen to be ironic. I'm probably more indie

BOFingSanta Sun 02-Dec-12 17:15:52

What makes you interested enough to register and post on mumsnet? Is this normal for your age group?

What exactly is indie and is it good to be called this?

RoffleCopter Sun 02-Dec-12 17:17:08

Heart disease you say?

Interesting. I'm actually going to die of irony.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:18:39

@Willow777 I feel your pain I have one too I'm sure as soon as the cold weather goes it'll get better.

@Sparklingbrook Thank you! I did.

@TessGoesDirectToBethlehem A few boys can and I wish they wouldn't

FromEsme Sun 02-Dec-12 17:19:01

Oh hipster is so NOT a fashion subculture, puh-lease.

Anyone who dresses LIKE a hipster is instantly not a hipster.

Get with the prog, teen.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:20:38

@BOFingSanta well my mum goes on a lot and she like it

@stayathomegardener Indie is a type of music more than anything but people made their own style out of it.

MrsMushroom Sun 02-Dec-12 17:21:28

What is that sideways mouth thing some girls do on photos. Not duck face...more twisted mouth face?

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:23:19

@MrsMushroom they probably do it because they think it looks good.

TaggieCrimboBlack Sun 02-Dec-12 17:23:21

Why the @?

It is deeply irritating and pointless.

I hate teenagers.

Well yes I know that! Was expecting more insider info really

willow777 Sun 02-Dec-12 17:25:19

Probably right Hipster, that'll be June or so then smile

What's the must have Christmas present for teens this year?

DrinkFeckArseGirls Sun 02-Dec-12 17:29:38

There was an exactly the same thread earlier thix year. hmm

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:30:10

TaggieCrimboBlack Do you have teenagers?

stayathomegardener indie is usually quite retro they like pacman and bobble hats

RedZombie Sun 02-Dec-12 17:31:29

I've got 17 years left on my endowment and is chronically underperforming Cash in and reinvest in luxury holidays to the Maldives or stick with it?

What's with taking your stuff in carrier bags to school. Why don't they carry nice rucksacks that all your stuff can fit into.

@@@@@ stop please this is not Twitter.

WithTheDude Sun 02-Dec-12 17:32:25

Last time I checked "hipster" was a term used to denote middle aged men who really, really want to be that whiny arse from Reality Bites.

I was being ironic. Apparently, it's all the rage wink

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:32:42

Tessgoesdirectlytobethlehem All teens want different things. Maybe if you're rich then the new Iphone or Halo 4 has just come out. It depends do you have boys or girls

DrinkFeckArseGirls I didn't see it

RoffleCopter Sun 02-Dec-12 17:33:53

How many hipsters does it take to change a lightbulb?

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:34:56

Secretsquirrels I'm not on twitter, all teens aren't on twitter

WithTheDude When did you check? Was it around the time people last used to word 'dude'

Why aren't you out drinking vodka in the street or snogging boys in the park? Checks where own dds are...

Tbh WHY would you want to be on here talking to a load of old women, unless you are actually doing research for The Daily Wail or something?

My question is: what happens to a teenage girl if she is forced to spend more than ten minutes without a phone, a computer, a set of headphones or a lipstick?

AlmostAChristmasHipster Sun 02-Dec-12 17:36:01

"Oh hipster is so NOT a fashion subculture, puh-lease.

Anyone who dresses LIKE a hipster is instantly not a hipster.

Get with the prog, teen."

Yeah, what FromEsme said. I had to take a Facebook quiz to inform me that I was almost one smile. I rather hoped it was a state of mind...

It's never a good thing when someone comes onto a forum offering their unasked for advice, IMO, especially when that someone purports to be a teen. I've seen it a dozen times on different fora - it rarely ends well.

My teenage daughters would rather stick pins in their eyes than hang out online here. Tumblir is where it's at, apparently <shrugs as has no clue>

CointreauVersial Sun 02-Dec-12 17:36:31

What's so wrong with wearing a coat?

Dededum Sun 02-Dec-12 17:37:30

It's freezing and no one wears a coat to school. Why?

Dededum Sun 02-Dec-12 17:38:19

Cross post CV smile

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:38:31

I know that one.

No cloakrooms or lockers so kids have to carry all their stuff.

Ooh, good question about the coat!

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:39:17

AlmostAChristmasHipster Don't even get me started on Tumblr its basically Reddit for people who can't read

CointreauVersial haha, my dad says that. If it doesn't go with our outfits we won't wear it, we'll look like an idiot. Even if we freeze. (And the we'll complain about being cold) But coats just aren't fashionable.

RedZombie Sun 02-Dec-12 17:39:42

I love Tumblr, that makes me more of a hipster teen then when I was an actual teen. Mind you, the inventors of Tumblr probably weren't born when I was a teen.

I remember when it was all fields round here.........

What is It looks scary.

LadyWidmerpool Sun 02-Dec-12 17:40:19

When will the national hairbrush shortage end? It will be painful to brush out all those bird's nests sad

AlmostAChristmasHipster Sun 02-Dec-12 17:40:19

If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, does a hipster buy its album?

(I found Tumblir! smile)

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:40:53

The coat thing is that coats just aren't fashionable and I hate having to carry them round school and we always lose them. Its mainly inconvenience.

RedZombie Sun 02-Dec-12 17:41:27

grin at LadyWidmerpool

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:41:43

<down wiv the hipsters> @@

But its soooo cold Hipster you will freeze.

RedZombie Sun 02-Dec-12 17:42:59

Bugger. I meant @Lady, not at. Shit I'm soooooo not a hipster.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:43:21

sparklingbrook is where people as other people anonymous questions. In theory. In reality its where people bully other people and never get caught. I'd just tell your kids to avoid it at all costs.

LynetteScavo Sun 02-Dec-12 17:43:53

What brand of clothing should my Y9 DS wear when dressing to impress on non- uniform days?

Why won't my DS wear a plain white t-shirt under his school shirt when it's minus 4'C and he has to wait at the bus stop.

Why do girls add lots of iiiii's to thier name on facebook. One person, who I've known all her life as Grace, is now known as Graciiiie. I do not understand this.

In the similar thread earlier this year the poor girl was flamed to a crisp. Just to warn you.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:44:20

SparklingBrook I know but looking decent and not having to carry things around is our priority.

Does your mum know you are on here Hip?

I thought it was like that Hipster-sounds grim. On FB what's the 'like for a rate' about? That seems cruel too.

VivaLeBeaver Sun 02-Dec-12 17:47:11

Well I certainly hope that noone would flame a teenager who's come here with good intentions. The last one iirc came with intentions of winding everyone up.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:48:09

LynetteScavo Oh i don't know. Maybe Levi's jeans, converse, a cool t-shirt and a hoodie. Things don't have to be branded to be cool

I don't know about the plain t-shirt, maybe he had PE and he thought he would look like an idiot

Girls add iii's because they think its cute, it isn't

and thanks for mothers these people can be very mean smile

What do you look for in a boyfriend?

<looking for tips for DS>

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:51:01

TessGoesDirectToBethlehem She does indeed. I tell my mum everything.

Sparklingbrook Its is, like for a rate is okay. They mainly put in the region of 7-10 unless they're really mean.

VivaLeBeaver I assure you I am here with the nicest of intentions. I just thought it might help to get a teens point of view. I would never just do something to wind someone up.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:52:55

SecretSquirrels Funny, not immature, not in your face, sweet, kind, good looking, doesn't dress like a swag fag (not trackies, not jeans that show off your arse, not snapbacks), nice to you

Snapbacks make me laugh too *Hipster. we live in Worcestershire not New York. grin

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 17:55:41

SparklingBrook I hate them with a passion. They think they look so amazing with them on but I reality they look like they are trying too hard.

They look like giant toddlers in caps. grin

FellatioNelson Sun 02-Dec-12 17:59:47

Why do you scream REALLY loudly every time you see your friends, even if you just saw them yesterday? And what's with all the hugging? And why do you all do that funny fairy skipping or shuffling thing when you run towards one another?

I find it hard to believe I was ever one of you. You seem like a different species entirely.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 18:02:38

Sparklingbrook Haha they really do

FellatioNelson I, personally don't but I know a lot of people who do and it massively annoys me as well. I think its mainly just for the attention. I think its also I show off the fact that your in a friendship group and its almost showing other girls that thats their friends, like a territorial thing.

HoneyDragon Sun 02-Dec-12 18:03:06

Do you know where Shergar is? NO GOOGLING ALLOWED.

<<<please, please, please, any passing deities, let this thread be the one>>

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 18:04:24

HoneyDragon Isn't that a race horse?

GhostShip Sun 02-Dec-12 18:05:06

No teen I know would call themselves HipsterTeen. I find it a bit weird and slightly disturbing this thread..

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 18:05:48

GhostShip Why? I am a real teenager.

GhostShip Sun 02-Dec-12 18:06:16

Oh I know you're a load of bollocks since I've just read 'coats aren't fashionable'.

FellatioNelson Sun 02-Dec-12 18:09:07

How many lesbians do you know? When I was your age I didn't know any but they are very fashionable these days I hear, and all the best schools/crowds/parties will have at least two, and they will snog and hold hands in public. In my day people would have fainted, or called the police. I'm all for the openly lesbian teenager though. Bring it on, I say.

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 18:12:13

FellatioNelson I know quite a lot actually. I have a friend who kisses me randomly. Some people claim to be bi-sexual but I think thats just so they look 'cultured'

Ghostship Ahh okay

HoneyDragon Its a famously missing race horse, of course I don't know where it is.

Bluestocking Sun 02-Dec-12 18:12:17

Funny thing is, Teen, I used to feel exactly the same about coats more than thirty years ago. You'll grow out of it.
My next question is? Why do you all, like? Talk like this, like, all the time?

HipsterTeen Sun 02-Dec-12 18:15:08

BlueStocking I'm sure I will :3 and because 'like' is a filler when we are thinking of what to say next.

GhostShip Sun 02-Dec-12 18:17:57

Thats the part that makes me think you're not a teen. Because you've said coats aren't fashionable. I know this is something teens used to say, but now I know teenagers who love buying their new winter coats. It's like you've said it because you think you're expected to say it.

Anyway if you are a teen you have my apologies. But I doubt you are wink

GhostShip Sun 02-Dec-12 18:18:47

I'm a teen... twentyoneteen grin

I am a teen grin
But OP, I would really love to know.....why people like the Keep Calm and Carry On posters. Indepth analysis appreciated thanks.

YouCanBe Sun 02-Dec-12 18:36:22

What is the teenage version of mumsnet?

Hip you're coming across as a very mature 15 year old.

marriedinwhite Sun 02-Dec-12 19:09:35

If I ask four times for empty yoghurt pots, dirty mugs and knickers to be picked up and put in the right place and to behave like a civilised human being - why is it nagging. If what I asked to be done was done I wouldn't have to repeat myself.

Why can't teenagers just fucking doing and be thoughtful of the needs/time of others? angry

I have teenage daughter who drives me insane. She has pouty photos on fb, covered in make-up tho is so pretty without. Half a can of hairspray. She doesn't really seem interested in boys, was wondering if it's not really the thing these days to have a boyfriend? If so good. She hates wearing a coat & when I asked her she said its cos it looks stupid with what she's wearing which at the moment is short short denim shorts! When do things get better? smile

TSR, of course!

They're all the same. Clones sad

icclebabyjesusheave Sun 02-Dec-12 20:03:49

Hey HipsterTeen, I'm a teen just like you. Do you want to ask me some questions? LOL etc.

We could swap tips on how to avoid getting thrush from wearing thick tights under unfeasably small shorts, or how to get the big unkempt style hair to look as big and birds-nesty as it does.

Come on, it'll be totes amazeballs.

FellatioNelson Mon 03-Dec-12 03:35:45

Hipster. Have you slept with my 17 year old son? I only ask because everyone else seems to.

And why do you all start your middle partings immediately above one ear? Don't you realise it looks silly?

sashh Mon 03-Dec-12 07:05:36

Do you know where the hair for extensions comes from? If you do then why are you wearing them (you as in general teens not you as an individual)

flow4 Mon 03-Dec-12 08:50:55

Aww, Fellatio please can your 17 year old son share with my 17 year old son?! The lack of sex is making him glum. And it's nice to share... Remember telling them so at toddlers? wink

Hipster, how many friends have you got? Both girls and boys... And how 'friendly' do you get?

GreatUncleEddie Mon 03-Dec-12 09:03:43

Hi hipster, I like you.

My question is - how long does it take the girls in your class to do their hair on the morning? Would it ever be acceptable to go to school without ironing it?

MrsMushroom Mon 03-Dec-12 09:25:13

I like the hipsters explanation for the question on why they hug and scream a lot. Very nice to know what that's about.

TheOriginalSteamingNit Mon 03-Dec-12 09:27:51

I didn't realise any of them self-identified as hipsters - I thought it was a perjorative term! My dds explained it that if you call things 'mainstream' you are usually a hipster, and are actually mainstream yourself. And you like moustaches.

EmpressOfTheNorthPole Mon 03-Dec-12 09:42:25

Hi Hipster. I'm still not entirely clear why you decided to come on but I'd like an answer to the same question as RedZombie. Why DOES DD insist on taking her stuff to school in a tatty carrier? Especially when she has a perfectly good Twilight rucksack which she chose herself?

flow4 Mon 03-Dec-12 09:53:54

Empress and RedZ, I realise I'm not a 'hipster' teenager, but I think I know the answer... grin I went to a certain 'trendy' school 30-35 years ago where there was no school uniform, the number of holes in a girl's clothes was directly proportionate to her family's income (more holes=more money) and carrier bags were all the rage... It's a Double-bluff Conspicuous Consumption thing: "I'm so cool, I don't even have to try... (But if my scruffy carrier bag is a designer brand I can signal my coolness TWICE)"! grin

HipsterTteen Mon 03-Dec-12 16:40:51

TessGoesDirectToBethlehem Thank you. Is that a good thing? I find acting mature earns you more adult respect and less tutting and eye rolling.

Marriedinwhite I guess its because we kind of thing we are responsible enough to do things on our own and we don't like being told to do thing. Sometimes we just can't be bothered. We're very lazy people.

ohcluttergotme Oh I know plenty of girls who are like this. It’ll change when they realise how ridiculous they look. Some girls aren’t really interested in boys at the moment because boy our age are really immature.

FellatioNelson Haha, no I’m a virgin :3 and I agree with you it does look stupid

flow4 I have a group of friend mainly girls but a few boys. The boys can get very ‘friendly’ they try and your bum and grope you but normally they get a slap. A few people I know get very friendly but usually only if they are in a relationship

GreatUncleEddie Thank you smile It takes them hours it really does but hair needs to look perfect. And I think curly hair is nice but straight hair is in fashion for a moment. I have a friend who had very naturally curly hair but she straightened it and now its all dry and broken.

FellatioNelson grin

I keep asking my DD why she has a combover. She says it's not a combover but a side parting (which seems to get nearer her ear each month!). I told her that when she is my age her children will shriek with laughter at the photos.

Hipster teen, do you have a combover? And if so do you realise you are just creating hysterical photos for the next generation?

VivaLeBeaver Mon 03-Dec-12 21:57:38

Combovers are terrible and so unflattering. I want to grab random teenagers and sort their hair out. My pre teen still has an untrendy middle parting!

FellatioBellsOn Tue 04-Dec-12 05:43:00

of course I meant side parting, not middle. confused

CheerfulYank Tue 04-Dec-12 05:50:50

I remember hating coats and hats! I live in fecking Minnesota.

It was -40. hmm

Of course I am 30 now so very old and sensible indeed. grin

flow4 Tue 04-Dec-12 06:50:23

Wow. Minus 40?! Is that much cold even possible?! Don't your fingers and toes drop off or something?!

CheerfulYank Tue 04-Dec-12 08:02:12

No, because if you're going to be out long you MUST cover up. But I remember whipping off my coat and hat as soon as possible and only wearing them when absolutely necessary.

And I remember the neighbor boy getting quite bad frostbite on his ear. And I had hypothermia, twice actually. So yeah, wear a coat! grin

CheerfulYank Tue 04-Dec-12 08:03:55

Oh, and we all occasionally got frostnip, which is like frostbite but not so bad.

musicposy Tue 04-Dec-12 09:21:07

Oh, and HipsterTeen, do you actually find teen boys who look as though they are staring through a windblown hedge attractive?

I was on the train the other day and this teen boy sat down. I had trouble not laughing. I could barely see his face as his very big hair was swept entirely over to the front and side. Bed hair gone ridiculous.

If I think DD1 looks absurd with her combover, I just need to look at the teenage boys she hangs out with. My fingers itch to grab a comb for all of them grin

sleepymum50 Tue 04-Dec-12 11:09:25

Hi, hipster teen, may I ask how old you are?

I have a (just) 16 year old DD who goes to an all girls school. She's pretty normal, loves make up, clothes, facebooketc. Hasn't got a boyfriend yet. Has done some supervised drinking ( and probably some secret drinking too)

She seems a sensible girl, and I'm pretty sure her head is screwed on well. But what in this day and age do I need to know about, and is there any thing I should be warning her about. By this I mean drugs, sex etc.

In my day, nice girls wouldn't shag a boy they had just met. The shame of being called a slag would outweigh that, and perhaps you'd go heavy petting and missionary position after some time. So should I worry that standards have changed so much - whats the norm these days?

ladybugged Thu 17-Jan-13 16:15:41

My dd is a massive duck facer! Talking of pics - which they are all obsessed by taking,of themselves obvs - what about this charming new thing ( or maybe its not that new - I dunno!) of sending text pics to boys of bits of thier bodies they dont normally show? Tits mainly! Its most disturbing. I think boys do it too - if theyre phit(sic) of the torso or I have heard they are quite fond of sharing pics of thier willies. I'm alarmed as Im talking about 13 year olds here! Its pretty common / popular isnt it? Is it called sexting?
