London summer jobs/other useful experience for students?

Ds is looking for a temp job this summer in London - and perhaps not surprisingly, it seems pretty quiet out there! Some agencies he's called aren't taking any more people onto their books...

If anyone knows of any agencies or other places in London that are actually taking on people (without that much experience) for temporary catering/menial/office/cleaning work, he would be v grateful!

And, if things don't look up, good ways of volunteering this summer? (I've seen the sendacow charity in another teenage jobseeking thread - hope the dd concerned has had luck now!)

Im not sure if they are recruiting but how about working as a seasonal assistant in one of the London (YHA) youth hostels. This is something that dd is considering for next year.

how old is he? you could try local playschemes at council

thanks so much for quick replies!

I'll suggest both. Suspect the children's playschemes may require CRB checks? which can slow things down, but worth a try. YHA as well - very good idea as presumably they are at their busiest in summer! (He is 18 - in middle of university, so one of many many looking for a job I suspect...)

your local area should have a volunteer bureau - it might be part of the CAB - worth a google.

my kids (16) have both registered with the volunteer agency and sent off enquiries about volunteering - over 2 weeks ago.

so it might be beter to just ring around - call into charity shops etc.

excellent idea - yes we have a volunteer bureau locally which seems to have quite a few possiblities! Though I think you may be right that it'll be quicker just to ring round.
