Help my 65 yr old mum is behaving like a teenager

My mum has always been young at heart but of late her behaviour is becoming worse. On Christmas day she wore a mini skirt, tights and heels, all of the family were there. She turned up wearing a sex pistols sweatshirt the other day that said "Never Mind The B......." My daughter is 13 and asked why her gran always behaves oddly. She's continually writing cringe worthy comments on Facebook with phrases like omfg and wtf etc. I rarely go on Facebook anymore as I dread what I'm going to see next. She uses a cartoon app on Facebook and continually posts them on my wall, I didn't react to the last one she posted (me in a catwoman suit) as I've had enough. Any advice is welcomed :-(

she sounds like a character. What is the problem exactly? just let her be herself, surely, and appreciate her for what she is. Nothing you describe sounds dangerous or depraved! ( is this a reverse?)

She's embarrassing me and my children. At my daughters 18th birthday party she felt my daughters boyfriends mates ass and tried to dance with him who was 21 (he was upset to say the least). I could go on I really could.

Wearing a sex pistol's jumper = meh

Groping people=no.

When you challenge her about her more extreme behaviour, what does she say? Is she drunk at the time, and mortified later? If not, I'd suggest you just say you cant or hang out with her if she's going to be so inappropriate

Agree with pp, the clothes sound fabulous, groping not so much.
So I'd pick my battles I suppose and let her get on with the rest. You're a long time dead, it sounds like she is trying to have some fun.
You do sound a bit uptight about it though, it's s mini skirt not crack cocaine.

Agree that clothes & FB while annoying aren't harming anyone.
Groping is not good - why is she doing it? Mid/late-life crisis?

Groping someone is something she should be pulled up on really quickly before someone charges her with sexual assault. The t-shirt is just from her youth, isn't it?

Are you concerned that she's showing early signs of dementia?

Report
picklemepopcorn · 21/01/2017 17:24

I guess you have to keep an eye on it. It may be an early sign of dementia. It can bring a lessening of inhibition. Or it could just be personality ceding expressed more now she has fewer responsibilities, for example.

Apart from the groping-you go Mum! I live to embarrass my dc.

At least she came for Christmas Day and her grandchildren s birthday unlike my mother or mil.

Groping is not on and she needs told firmly before she ends up in trouble.

But sex pistols? At 65 that's the type of music she probably grew up with is she Vivienne Westwood

Christ on a bike give the woman a break. 65 is no age and her behaviour sounds like she's having some fun! Dementia? Next someone will suggest she's taken to the doctor or worse!

It's her right to be embarrassing let her have her fun.
Groping hell NO.
Just have a quiet word and tell her it's not funny.

Oh dear, I had better order the twin set and pearls, the old lady perm and sensible shoes before I embarrass my grandchildren then. I suppose I had better chuck out all my music collection and replace it with Vera Lynn lest I offend.
Of course your DM shouldn't try and dance with anyone at a party, she should stay out of sight in her bathchair.
Feeling the young man's bum was a bit ott, but ffs lightened up!

If it was a man doing this no one would be telling the OP to lighten up. She's out of line.

She can wear what she likes (and lots of sixtysomethings will have been SP fans) but grabbing people is not acceptable. She's lucky he didn't make a scene. If it had been your Dad groping a 20 year old woman, there would have been grave repercussions I am sure.

Your mum sounds ace! Apart from the groping but yeah, she sounds fabulous and really fun.

then you are the one with the problem, and you are the ones who need to change

DH is nearly 60 and wears a Sex Pistols t-shirt from time to time. It's no different to you wearing a Westlife t-shirt. If she is happy in her own skin then you need to remove the stick from up your arse.

The groping isn't great though. I have a friend whose usual greeting to men is to cup their balls instead of shaking hands and it is very embarrassing.

Has she always been like this, though? If so, I think the 'only' thing to worry about is the sexual assault, so long as she's happy.

If this is a recent change, I'd be worried as it could be a sign of ill health, or even dementia. In that case she needs to see her GP.

I hope I'm wearing a Sex Pistols t shirt at 65. It would be so cool.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 22/01/2017 18:14

I grew up with them. But l'm 53. I can hardly remember it. But l would deffo wear the t shirt.

There is dementia in the family (my mum's mum had it) so the sudden change in behaviour is a concern. She's been getting increasingly aggressive lately too, swearing, shouting, reporting people for the slightest thing and getting into to arguments with pretty much anyone etc which is ok depending on who's she's around, as I said before I have young children who've started to get unsettled about her too. It's all very worrying in all honesty. It wasn't the fact that it was a Sex Pistols tshirt, it's the language on it.

Aggression and loss of inhibitions, including sexual inhibitions, can occur in early signs of dementia. Would she go to the docs for a check-up?
