DDs jogging?

QueenofQuirkiness · 16/07/2016 20:59

Hi, my eldest DD who is 15 wants to start going jogging when she is bored, she wants to jog for about an hour, she has planned a route too. AIBU to not like the idea of her running on her own? And after school when it might be dark? Please tell me I'm being silly and that nothing will go wrong, I am pleased that she wants to do something productive with her time, but I can't seem to stop worrying and so I'm a bit reluctant to let her

As long as she has planned a well lit sensible route I would be encouraging it.

You can buy wrist alarms

Wrist alarm, reflective top and/or shorts, running towards the traffic flow...all sensible precautions.

an hour is a long time for a beginner! Plan 20 minutes 3x a week, see how it goes.

Do you live in a very dangerous area ?

Does she normally go out alone aftre dark ?

Does she travel home alone from school in the winter when it's dark ?

It's hard to tell how safe it is without knowing where you live and what she usually does .

I agree than one hour is too long to start with . Get her to download the C25K app . It will take her through an 8 week run - walk programme until she can run 5km without stopping .

Then take her / send her on the bus to your local Parkrun each Saturday, it's free , friendly, safe and lots of teens do it .

It won't be dark after school for some months if you are in the UK.

An hour... So that's 5-7 miles roughly

Can she run?, she may have to start with c25k or similar.

It is summer now so don't worry about winter and dark nights yet, she may have a new hobby by then. What do you think of her route?

I'm fine with her distance, she can run quite well and I don't think she will have a problem, thanks for the advice, it's just when the clocks go back and it's properly dark and cold is what worries me

She probably won't want to go then!

The main risk of running after dark is traffic - you can buy a cheap hi vis vest for about £2.

Listening to music while running makes a person far less aware of their surroundings and isn't a great idea.

It's another three months until the clocks go back. I think your dd might see it as unreasonable to ban her from running now because of something that won't happen until the end of October. Even then, weigh up the likelihood of risks and benefits carefully. Running is fantastic exercise that strengthens young bones as well as all the obvious cv stuff.

I started running about that age. I used to go before school about 6am.

I am 35 now and have run almost every morning ever since! It's a great habit to get into.

We used to live near a women's refuge that had a lot of issues with prostitution and I did get a few blokes leering at me from cars asking if I was from there, but I learned to deal with it.

My Daughter is 12 and a keen little runner. She runs (in daylight) a 2.5 mile run in the local neighbourhood, usually with me, but has done it by herself when I'm stuck at work. I don't have a problem with it and would not worry. She walks to and from school after all. I'm proud of her, she is so keen.

Can you go with her? My DD is 12 and can run 5k in just under 25 mins but i or DH go with her. Id let my 14 yr old go alone (but getting her to run is anotger thread!!)

Well lit area in the day would be fine alone. In the dark id not be happy but we live in the country with no street lighting.
